"Eddie & Alex Talk about why Sammy was no longer in Van Halen and what happened between Eddie and David backstage after the show ( originally Aired Late 1996) I found this on the end of my 1992 recordings but as it was pointed out to me it was actually after the 1996 music award that this was recorded. Thanks"

The root cause of Sammy leaving the band was Van Halen's beloved manager, Ed Leffler, had died and the new manager(Ray Danniels', the husband of Alex's wife's sister) revealed to Eddie and Alex that Sammy had been paid more on their Right Here, Right Now Live album. Danniels also revealed that Sammy had a "Golden Parachute" if the band broke up Sammy was guaranteed a solo album with the record label. Obviously, the VH brothers were super pissed and made Sammy pay them back their fair share, which Sammy did..and the solo album deal was also cancelled.
Naturally, the VH brothers knew they couldn't trust Sammy ever again and they started treating him like shit, taking back control of the band, telling Sammy to change this song, redo this track, etc. In the end they drove Sammy crazy until he finally flew back to Hawaii then Eddie called him up and said it's over.
Now, stepping back let's look at Ed Leffler(the good manager). Ed knew how to manage the band, he went to bat for them, everybody loved him. In Leffler's eyes Sammy had been in the rock business 10 years longer than VH and yes, Sammy was practically running the band by himself, with the VH brothers basically a train wreck. Why not give Sammy a little more for the work he was doing?
If Leffler would have lived the band would've stayed together he was the glue to it all.

Looking back at these interviews with the brothers it's more evident who the problem really was in VH and it wasn't Dave or Sammy. Eddie gave us a new way to look at, listen and play the guitar, but his ego was way too big especially without anyone to push back on him (you get VH III as a result). The way they ended up treating Michael Anthony and the ridiculous assertions by Eddie about his talent and bass playing abilities...so sad that he was so miserable.

Sammy treats Michael like a brother so it's nothing against Sammy. Dave may be an issue but I don't think he hated him.

    • @SuperBartles
      @SuperBartles Před 3 dny

A common guitarist's fault - too much ego.
I say this as someone who has played guitar for decades, has met too many other guitarists, and has always had to be watchful of his own self-importance.
In the acoustic guitar world, Tommy Emmanuel (having met him & watched him in action) struck me as an oversized ego. Michael Hedges seems to have been a very gentle, nice guy - and one of the greatest guitarists.
I must say it was always apparent that EVH was another big-head. HE got a little bit more humble later on, and the story of how he developed his music is fascinating

It's OK to screw around and dump his wife because she goes nuts . Think about that from my point of view I've personally known of married couples where one member isn't sane . Marriage is til death do you part NOT til you don't approve of your other half . Yet he rats out on the Bros for getting "orally serviced" underneath the stage . OMG !! Rock stars screwing around while touring ! The book was supposed to be about HIM . Another example , Captain Candyass doesn't mention how much Konami paid him for letting them use the Can't Drive 55 song for the Ridge Racer 4 videogame TV commercial , yet Hagar crucified the Bros for selling songs for TV commercials . Hypocrisy . Sammy's a little 🐀 . Whatever started the feud was Sam's BIG mouth .

What never made sense about this is that by default if DLR is anywhere near this band, you know Sammy would have sprinted outta there even if he were performing at peak-ability. And that's what happened. So...if Sammy's exit is fait accompli, but they then tell the guy who's theoretically an upgrade that he's not in the band and there are no plans to tour...then what the h3ll was the long-term plan? One of those two HAS to be in the band.
You either commit to Roth or you show Sammy enough respect to lose Roth's phone number by this point. But you don't fire the guy who saved your band to replace him with the original guy for only a few weeks and leave yourself with nothing. When you're lucky enough to replace 'the guy' convincingly, you don't make that uphill climb only to push the new guy off, send some smoke signals to the old guy and then when he shows up, tell him "nothin' to see here." So, I just don't buy any of this "we never said you were back" narrative-contorting after the fact.
If you DO accept that this was made clear to Dave with everyone on the same page that this is nothing more than a quick romp to sell a Greatest Hits record and he was gonna be sh!tcanned either way, then what incentive would DLR have at that press conference to NOT make it about him (and it kinda is, let's face it)? Ed & Al are evaluating Dave's behavior as appalling because that's how you'd view it IF he were rejoining the band. But if it's a one-off that E&A don't care about anyway, then what would they care how Dave acts? I think that the brothers may have intentionally kept Dave at arm's length to keep him from going nuts on them but the idea that they weren't leaning in the direction of taking DLR on the road the following Summer or Fall is nonsense. You're telling me they said to themselves "Ok, Sammy's a hack all of a sudden, so let's do the thing that everyone wants to see happen with Dave for one appearance to build up some pub and then leave him in the dust while we attempt another re-org with someone else." That makes no sense. The only element that stands to benefit from this plan is the Greatest Hits record and the VMA appearance which get a quick boost from Dave. The band, each of it's members and essentially anything downstream of this is gonna have to fight it's way out of quicksand that they insisted on stepping in.
The only other rationale I could see here, that they certainly didn't admit at the time - publicly anyway - is that they knew if the band was gonna continue, it'd be propelled by the inertia of the previous 20 years no matter what. But knowing how much they respect artistry, the band's legacy, and music in general, I doubt that they waved the white flag out of nowhere and THEN decided to go Waco on their own band. It was risky as h3ll, and I don't blame them for gambling on Dave. It was the perfect time to do it. But when it got away from them, to act like "We never said X or Y or Z" is folly.

Sammy at the time had just had a baby with his new wife at the age of almost 50 years old despite already having older adult children with

This was the root cause of Sammy's dismissal and the argument that ensued between Sammy and Eddie.

    • @SladeBling
      @SladeBling Před 5 měsíci +1

The root cause was Van Halen's beloved manager, Ed Leffler, had died and the new manager(Alex's sisters husband) found that Sammy had been paid more on their Right Here, Right Now Live album. The VH brothers were super pissed and made Sammy pay them back their fair share, which Sammy did. Naturally, the VH brothers knew they couldn't trust Sammy ever again and they started treating him like shit, taking back control of the band, telling Sammy to change this song, redo this track, they drove Sammy crazy until he finally flew back to Hawaii then Eddie called him up and said it's over.

Eddie & Alex Van Halen by design to not tell the complete truth. Keep in mind that Sammy Hagar quit, and refused to play on a Greatest Hits Record. Warner Bros. wanted to release a Greatest Hits Volume One with two new songs with David Lee Roth.
It was perfect timing in to have David Lee Roth Return to do these two new songs--Me Wise Magic & Can get this stuff no more, with Sammy out of the picture, Roth was told by his handlers he was back in Van Halen.
After the MTV Awards, it was disclosed that Eddie Van Halen had auditioned multiple lead singers, to replace Sammy Hagar, and Roth was nothing more than a "RED HERRING."
Once the Greatest Hits Record was released, Van Halen decided to work with Gary Cherone, who was managed by the same manager as Van Halen at the time. Sammy Hagar spoke about the death of their old manager, and once the new guy stepped in, everything changed.
David Lee Roth once realized the ruse, he went to the press, and spilled his story to the LA TIMES, stating that Eddied "tricked" me into this notion that I was back in Van Halen, only as a short-term solution to deal with Sammy Hagar.
In retrospect, in (1996), Van Halen should have stayed the course with David Lee Roth, for the song--"Me Wise Magic" was their best song in years since Sammy Hagar took over. It was brilliant, high harmonies, and a return to the mighty Van Halen. Instead, they took a left turn based on bad management, and went down the rabbit-hole of Gary Cherone, who was nothing more than a scapegoat. For he was a bad choice, however, he was excellent for the Van Halen catalog live.
By (1999), Warner Bros. said either get back with (Dave or Sam), or we are dropping you from the label.
In (2000), Van Halen returned to David Lee Roth in LA, and recorded a full-album. He was shelved, because the lawyers got involved, and Roth split again over demands against Eddie Van Halen.
2002, Roth goes on tour with Sammy Hagar. Makes a ton of money, but due to "Lead Singer Disease" Sammy calls out Roth and all hell broke loose, and the tour falls short concluding the tour,
2004, Van Halen has a reunion tour scheduled with Sammy Hagar, Eddie & Alex demand that if Michael Anthony is on the bill, he must take a discount on his salary, otherwise they will not do the tour. Michael Anthony is nothing more than a session player, who is paid much less than everyone on the tour. The tour ends with fist fights on planes, and separate transportation for remaining tour dates. Sammy & Eddie are in separate buses, and do speak to each other.
2007--Van Halen returns to David Lee Roth sans Michael Anthony, in favor of his snot-nose-son.
Note, recently, David Lee Roth calls out Wolfgang Van Halen for being a spoiled, entitled fat slob, who wouldn't stop complaining about his touring with David Lee Roth. First, it was his wardrobe, then it was about how Roth wasn't sharing the stage with this overweight 16- or 17-year-old on stage. Keep in mind, Roth goes to state that Wolfgang stiffed an important account of the band and her friends to a show in (2015), to teach Dave a lesson.
The amount of drama with Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and all the rest of the [maelstrom] of events surrounding the dysfunction of Van Halen is never ending.
Van Halen right now is Sammy & Michael, who have been playing both Sammy & Roth material for years.
Alex Van Halen lost leverage with Roth. And is on his own island. Alex is not a session drummer, and will not be attached to another band ever.
He will make his royalties, and will just walk away. Not a bad move given the amount of in-fighting with Van Halen.

Wolfgang literally did fucking nothing wrong. This is someone who actively refuses to live off of his father's legacy and would rather make his own music and do his own thing, even if it means playing in smaller venues.

As it turns out, David Lee Roth was right they should’ve just gone on tour. This is from the 1996 MTV awards. After the 1980s ended, we got a grand total of four studio albums from Van Halen. they could’ve been the first full-time nostalgia act in retrospect, and probably would’ve made a ton of money.

Sammys work ethic? The man was almost 50 when his daughter was born. Likey didnt want to miss out on important life events. He had 2 older sons and likely spent those moments playing music. Hagar was always the better performer to me.
