- War Of The Worlds Tripods Explained: The Correa Tripod is a video by pupbenny about this subject. Henrique Alvim Corrêa was a Brazilian artist who traveled to London in 1902 to present H. G. Wells with illustrations that he'd done for the story of The War Of The Worlds. HG Wells loved the drawings so much that he invited Correa to use them in an upcoming new edition of The War Of The Worlds in French. These pictures and their depiction of the Martian Tripod Fighting Machines have since garnered a cult following with the pictures being used even in indie games by fans of the series.

15:12 - Some sources say the work was lost in 1942 when a German boat carrying his work was sunk, while other sources claim they were on a boat that was sunk by a German submarine.
I also noticed how these war of the worlds tripods have inspired many different adaptions of HG Wells The War Of The Worlds, including The War Of The Worlds 1953 film, The Great Martian War 1913-1917, Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds and even Steven Spielberg's 2005 War Of The Worlds starring Tom Cruise as well as many indie games and art and war of the worlds games have included direct adaptions of this tripod. I found a War Of The Worlds game that's a nice adaption and it certainly makes a nice change from FOX's War Of The Worlds and the BBC's War Of The Worlds that we've gotten lately. The War Of The Worlds 1913 game is a worthwhile, fun and nicely stylised adaption of H G Wells The War Of The Worlds. Also credit goes to PaletteFM for assisting in the colourisation of some of the drawings.

Alvim Corrêa certainly made a massive impact with his depiction of H.G. Wells' the War Of The Worlds and his design of the tripods is easily one of the most iconic versions there's ever been. It's really nice that these tripod designs live onand continue to be adapted by fans of the story. :)
@pupbenny I don't know if you know this, but there IS a 2005 Spielberg tripod MMO game in development where you can play as the Tripods. It's incredible and the development team has made a metric F-tonne of progress on it. I love the gameplay footage showing how you can utilize the tripod's spy camera to sniff out survivors in houses.
I think that this is the only tripod design that finds the the feeling of being cartoony and creepy at the same time
Ahh just likes Trevor's cartoon monsters

Honestly imagine there's a whole invasion going on, and the war machines are just happily waddling about destroying things with there death rays whilst looking like there absloutely joyful, that would be pretty surreal and I can't tell if the war machine enjoying the destruction would make it scarier
You're right that would be probably even more terrifying, especially with their massive eyes lol.
Their cartoonish appearance lends itself to the horror.
We can all understand the fear of being subjugated by some squamous, betentacled tyrant or massacred by a swarm of sharp-toothed monsters.
But getting disintegrated by Marvin the Martian? It's hard to process, which makes the horror hit harder.
They do kinda look Ghibli-esque to me.@@Ice117
@@Ice117look out Tommy the tin can driver is going to disintegrate you!
The one thing I think a lot of artists tend to forget when it comes to the tripods is they're not JUST vehicles, they're meant to be literal extensions of the martians themselves. It's especially apparent when you consider that these martians are meant to be a dark look into our own potential future, literal brains that even lack a proper immune system.
The eyes anthropomorphize them in a way that hasn't really been seen since. It makes it clear they're people like us, and we'd likely be doing the very same thing to another planet if we were put under the same stressors.
I love your interpretation of the whole concept, and it makes me see the book in a whole new light.
You know what I think is a nice compromise for the eyes on these designs? Having them look like gas mask lenses, specifically the kind normally seen on German gas masks in WW1. It gives it more of a "viewport" vibe, while also at the same time feeling like there are eyes behind them.
Personally this is what I would go for.
Yeah, remove the pupils and the horror factor goes up 900%

The Tripods can also move their hood they can rotate it 360 so they can see where the enemy is and they use the eyes as lights too
yoo luunaaaar
The Alvim Correa Tripods will forever be the best and my favourite tripod designs ever. Hands down. No comparison. I love everything about them, especially the eyes, heat ray gun, legs and the hood. They also give a steampunk vibe, and I love it.
To be honest, I actually find the Fighting Machine's eyes creepy, given their uncanny appearance, and it also gave their personality of the pilots.
The personality, yes!
These aren't soldiers fighting a war.
They're exterminators removing pests.
After months, the goat is back
As brazillian i never thought that a brazillian created the tripod design. Im so happy man
the derpiness of the eyes is what makes the 100ft tall machines truly shine! now we need a series/show that uses the Corrêa tripods in all their derpy glory!
I'm pretty sure this is first time i am seeing these illusrations, but holy hell this is cool.
I think the eyes are probably my favourite aspect of the design, they may look cartoony but they also give of the feeling of this giant metal creature watching over you with it’s small pupils glowing in the dark, staring deeply at your futile world as it destroys your entire civilisation
Now this is something you don't see very often, War of the Worlds based content, must say I am intreagued!
These things just Scream early Century Nightmare
The designs are almost Dr Suess Like with how sorta cartoony they are
which really adds to the Nightmarish look to them.
Omg Kepler hi!!!!1
@@axjagfilms We meet at this congregation i see!
Yeah! Nightmarish Dr Suess is a really fantastic way to describe these illustrations!
This design of the tripods are interesting, and look very good
Awesome job! I loved this overview! I’m actually currently making a series in an attempt to repopularize Henrique’s design of WOTW (although I hope it won’t end up like Skibidi Toilet), but other than that you did a great job describing and explaining how Correa used his brush to make the ultimate fears of the Victorian Era, and how some scenes were goofy. I keep telling my viewers that the tripods aren’t alive and are just martian gundam suits, but then again it’s really hard to tell that with Correa’s work. Once again, awesome presentation!
Thank you very much! :) It's really great to see more fans of this design and trying to bring it to the forefront of attention again, it's great to hear you're getting people interested in it! :)
In my opinion, the Alvim Correa tripods are the definitive tripod designs.
@@ShinGhidorah17 It would work for the Artilleryman's plan too
I STILL LIKE YOU THEN....
YOU ARE VERY GOOD👍👍👍👍
I think another reason these tripods feel so alive is because, unlike other designs where their weapons is already part of their bodies, this one seems to have it separatedly, especially in the illustration where one of the tripods gets destroyed, dropping the heat ray or the tripod holding the black smoke weapon, and the cage behind them (which back then i thought it was some kind of backpack lol).
Makes the tripods feel like giant soldiers
I’ve always found these illustrations so uncanny and creepy, I’m elated to see someone actually dedicate an in-depth discussion just to his interpretation
I like how the Martian Fighting Machine looks like 19th and early 20th century water towers. But...Definitely menacing looking.
My interpretation after seeing the image of the building with eyes is that the machines don't have eyes, but the human character that watches them gives them eyes in their imagination. This was the ages of surrealism and many other styles. It's also something horrific of cartoon characters doing cruel things - so I can imagine this is somewhat what he might have thought off.
I never did like the Pearson's magazine tripods by Warwick Goble, as they always gave me the impression of kettle BBQ s on crane booms, armed with a pair of laundry tongs and a bucket with a camera lens stuck on it and held by earth like pulleys and so forth, resembling a fishing rod. Correa's illustrations are by far the best, in my opinion.
* 5th of September '23. I must however give Warwick Goble credit, as he was a fine illustrator but his tripods seemed to me, simply unimaginative and inanimate. I wasn't too keen on his torpedo ram either! But again, Goble was a fine illustrator.
Yeah they're definitely a really odd design, H.G. Wells wasn't fond of them either. I have a video about that coming out very soon too (was intending to release it first actually, so it'd be in chronological order, but had the Corrêa one ready first).
@@pupbenny Cool. 👍
Among the many depictions, you might want to look up Alex Niño's illustrations for the Pendulum Press' Now Age comic book adaptation of WotW. His fighting machines are truly unique-looking technological terrors, and he does his best to stay very accurate to H.G. Well's story.
As silly as the eyes look in some sketches, I like them. They add this certain alien quality.that make the tripods look cold and distant. Sure, we can recognize them as eyes, but they are fake eyes. These simple spheres with black dots. There is intelligence with the eyes, but no humanity in them. Eyes are the windows into the soul, and all you get in these eyes is "I'm the lawnmower, and you are the grass."
Imagine if the tripods were given human like eyes in a modern depiction. it'd look silly, but soon it would become terrifying as you see these cold dead orbs staring out across the world in the darkness. It makes it look all seeing, all knowing, and dangerous. You might be tiny compared to the tripods, but with those eyes.... if you see them, it DEFINITELY saw you 100% and you're 2 seconds from being vaporized..
In the cover they look so happy. Even when a whole city is being destroyed
What’s up bro as much as I love your odd world lore I definitely think you should expand content like you did hear. Great video. It would be cool to predator, aliens, horror film depictions. You get the idea !
Yeah that's definitely what I'm trying to do at the moment! :) And that's a really good idea about predator and aliens, I've seen (nearly) all of those films so that's definitely something I should consider, thank you! :)
The Correa tripods gave me nightmares when I was little. One time, I dreamt was being chased by the "Christmas Tree" domed Pod and was terrified of their little pupils and beady eyes.
I like the eyes, it gives the impression that there is an intelligence within the machine and that it's not just a simple machine or sculpture, The glowing nature and them being eyelike adds a more sinister idea to the line " Now and again a light like the beam of a warship's searchlight would sweep the common, and the heat ray was ready to follow." 4:31 gives it an ominous feeling of you're being watched by an intelligence that makes no attempt to hide, seemingly invincible and at any moment can swoop down after you.
Would love a pupbenny video about the various martian depictions. There’s so many interesting designs people have done. Some are closer to the source material with the v-shaped mouth, 2 big eyes and a big head and tentacles protruding from it; like the Jeff Wayne ones. But others go in a different direction while still having an impactful design, like the 1953 and 2005 movie versions. And there’s so much art people have done trying to capture the image of the aliens.
Its good to have you back my dude
Thank you, equinos! :)
@@pupbenny no my dude, thank you for coming back
Thanks for making this video. It was great to watch. ❤
Solid work, thanks for making this!👍
in my opinion when you mention the image of Dead London with the eyes , i think it's a dive into the Narrator's psyche as well , because no man experiences what the narrator did and makes it out unscathed mentally , the official sequal makes it clear as the now named Walter Jenkins had to go through therapies with Dr. Freud Himself , divorce his wife who he tried to reuinite with after leaving her in Leatherhead and even scars in his hands from the time he was in the scorching water when the boiling hot wave sent him crashing down and almost stomped on by a tripod , even then when i was reading the sequel , i imagined the Alvim Correa tripods walking about and causing destruction
I didnt get notified about this video, so im 3 days late😢. The goat is back!
Thank you! And dw I set it to not notify subscribers as it was not Oddworld related.
To be fair this is the best design. A few tweaks (I own a pewter model of this version and I turned it into a nightmare) such as removing the dots on the eyes, rigging the tentacles on the pole on the top of the 'hat' to be more like a radar mast with the tentacles moored to the hat's brim and having that pole face the rear like an echo of the pointed and hooded design on Spielberg's 2005 Tripod. Second, put a "brain-case" or a semi-bio-mechanical sack under the hat's brim that' just behind the cylindrical head (the cylinder which has the eyes facing front) and have that be the nerve-center for the machine's locomotion control that feeds into the controls in the cockpit. Finally have the tentacles mounted just under and between the three legs. That's what I did to my Correa Model I have as a model. My friends agree that my take on the Correa version with my model is utterly sinister and terrifying.
Great Job!, you Camed back Yay!
Great video!! I love The War of the Worlds and Corrêa's drawings are so iconic 😊🇧🇷💚💛💙
Great Video!
CZcams might be hijacking my mind because today I saw a video on my home page with this tripod in the thumbnail, but I scrolled past it because I hardly get interested in things I don't already know about, but then I saw another one and was like "wait I've seen this thing already" so I got interested, and this is the third video I'm watching. I instantly fell in love with those guys (on second attempt lol) and if it wasn't for their goofy eyes I would've never got interested in the first place. Their design is the perfect silly guy material that appeases my one singular brain cell that operates my entire body
I long for a surreal horror adaptation using these designs.
There's the gmod map/video called The Falaise Watertower.
The argument over eyes reminds me different themes of horros. Like, there's stuff like xenomorphs with no eyes and they're creepy and alien, devoid of basic things like a face one could relate to. But at the same time, eyes focusing on you, singling you out, is also creepy. They signal intent. You have been seen. A machine lifting you up and scanning you hits different from a living thing lifting you up and looking you up and down.
It’s been a long time since you’ve done a war of the worlds video.
Yeah, I was surprised by how long it's been, it said I hadn't updated my playlist since 2021. I intend on having a lot more very soon though!
I’m gonna be frank, I never noticed the eye thing until this video. I always thought they were Martian heads looking out.
This got me interested in something new, thxx
It will be more organic when it has eyelids to show emotions. I wonder what it would look like
That's an interesting idea, I wonder what that would look like too!
Really cool Blender Renders, nice adaptation.
You've inspired me to try harder at blender. You can make really nice artwork with it and I love painting Fighting machines LOL
I also like how we appear to have a chance, even with our technology being inferior to theirs, our weapons appear to be more than capable of taking them down as shown at 6:53, us ramming one, and again at 7:01, where it appears we had taken some out.
Yeah I like that too! I think it's a shame most modern depictions show us as not making a dent into them.
I found out some gmod horror thing called The Falaise Watertower that makes these tripods look so much scarier.
I feel thier eyes give them an almost preying mantis look. I wouldn't want to come across a mantis as tall as a church steeple. While goofy looking it would be something worth avoiding.
That's a really great comparison! It would be quite a clear warning to stay clear. As one of the reddit comments I saw said: the goofy eyes would 'make them even more terrifying' in real life. (I thought I replied to this comment already but either my reply disappeared or I forgot to send it, so sorry if this sends twice!)
The humans call them ‘fighting machines’ but really the machines serve as the Martians physical bodies. The Martians are basically oversized brains.
15:50 Bro is being used a water tower. Punishment at it's harshest 😆

the tripod thats having a time of its life got me dying🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Tripods my beloveds
These are my favorite tripods. But I made a weird connection after looking at them, more specifically, their eyes, after really studying the illustrations and consulting my antique postcard collection of all things. The thing is that eyes are quite similar to eyes drawn in old early 1900s Halloween postcards. I might be making connections when their are none, but perhaps this eye style was shorthand for “spooky” in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Just a thought.
Imagine if the great martian war used these tripods .
I would love a model Replicas of all these Tripod models. Especially this Tripod! Like what Eaglemoss would make.
The eyeballs on these Martian machines are windows. On Mars, they are just one big pane of transparent material. However, since Earth is so much closer to the Sun, the Martians would have been blinded without modifying the windows. Consequently, the windows on the Earth-variant of their war machines uses a light reflecting blind with a small pupil-like opening that can be regulated like the aperture of a camera lens, to control the amount of light . Since the field of vision is so small with the aperture, the blind can be moved in both X and Y axes to allow the Martians to see objects that otherwise would be at the periphery of their view. This gives the impression of a moving eyeball in a living machine, which strikes further terror into the Earthlings. Of course, if the Martian behind one window is looking in one direction, while the Martian behind the other window is looking in another direction, the war machine can look quite comical. This has always been my personal rationalization for the "eyes" on Correa's version of the Martian war machines.
i thing one aspect of the big eyes that could be used very well in a film attapttion is the sense of dread or fear that could be put in them. imagine your face to face with one of these and as your about to die, you look to its eyes and depending on the direction their going for: see a souless void sparing back at you, unflinching, uncompromsing and uncaring. alternatively we could do the opposite, you look inward and see the face of violent suffering, a semi organic part of this machine that holds empathy but is unable to change what it does, stuck in a permanent nightmare
This guy basically made fan art long before that was a common thing, and the author was so moved that he had an entire rerelease just to get Correa’s art seen.
I NEED MORE ART OF THE SPHERE TRIPOD IN THE SCENE WHERE THERES A WALL OF TRIPODS YK HOW THERE THAT ONE ROUND BOI I NEED HIM NOW HIS NAME IS GERARD
In all seriousness though, I feel like the google eyes were meant to scare the humans, it’s entirely possible that there was a apex predator which causes a certain paranoia (like the uncanny valley) with goofy eyes on mare and they try to make humans afraid by using those.
I personally am a fan of the eyeless tripod alteration. I think making monsters lack eyes does a lot to add creepyness to the design. You dont know where they're looking, you dont know what they're thinking, you would have no awareness of *their* own awareness. That ambiguity creates a sense of creepyness and omnipresence.
For me, it’s not the eyes that feel cartoony, it’s the pupils. Take those out, and you have this creepy, Uncanny Valley effect to them.
It's sad more of his art was not preserved
Another example of pride for Brazil!

@@pupbenny👽Groovy!!🛸 Indeed! The feeling is mutual and personally it was the War of the Worlds (a mere adaptation to a comic strip or cartoon perhaps) that introduced me to the concept of life in other worlds as a child.
I really don't mind the eyes at all. One thing that many people seem to forget about Wells depiction of the Martians is that they evolved past limbs and regressed physically to vestigial tentacle like fingers and a brain with eyes and a little mouth. The machines they had seemed to be almost interchangeable bodies they could put their brain like selves into. This means the Tripods were an extension of themselves. In that way, having eyes on the Tripods makes sense as, while in the Tripods, the Tripods are the Martian.
To me with the eyes on the tripods. It feels less like a vehicle and more like armor/suit to the Aliens. Like they wear a tripod and not drive a tripod
With the eyes I never focused on the pupils I always thought of them more like search lights
