    I’ve been riding for over 20 years, the Custom X is the best board out there period, If you are experienced and like speed and power. It can blast massive side hits, high speed rollers, 60
    Ft tables, and airs out of any pipe; not to mention it carves like a scalpel that was just taken out of the package. I haven’t found anything thing that comes even close for over a decade. That said, that’s the beauty of snowboarding, we can all enjoy it from our own perspectives, but we are all part of the same community! I will gladly ride with anyone no matter their skill level or personal style. When I started you had to physically fight skiers just to get down the mountain lol, we’ve come a long way since then thank god.

      I'm looking to upgrade from a Jones Aviator 162, mainly because I find myself booting out when I'm carving. I'm 200 lbs, and I'm wondering if 162W with a Custom X is the way to go (or if I should just grab the 166W?). My question for you, are you still experiencing boot-out on 166W, or do you not even need to worry about it?

      @@lukejuras8024 I went from a 162W Burton baron and never experienced any toe drag on that either, definitely not on the 166W. I also ride a pretty ducked stance at around 15/-15. Custom x is a great board though, very fast and very stable.

    I’ve ridden the 2021 model. It’s a solid and recommendable ride. It gripped very well on icy parts but my friend has had it for some time already and he maintains the edges so I cannot comment on the factory tune. The pop/spring from the carve is very good but you should try Nitro Suprateam, Salomon Ultimate Ride or K2 Alchemist.

    As an experienced rider who loves speed and aggressive carving, this sounds like the perfect board for me, but can't decide if the price premium over the regular Custom is worth it. I want maximum stability for high speed carving but a board that feels extra light and springy sounds really appealing. I'm also considering the Capita Merc and Mega Merc.

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Před rokem +1

      Tough call. I think it depends on your weight, boot size, height, ability level, conditions you ride and what calls to you more. The CX carves/turns way better and pops harder but the Merc and Mega Merc are no slouches when it comes to pop either. They are also much more forgiving and float easier in powder.

    Thanks for the detailed info! Can tell you know how to think about these boards as you ride them.
    I'm 6'2" and 160ish lbs with size 11.5 boots. I love to rip all-mtn but I also take lots of switch laps and enjoy the park and side hits. I break in my boards really quickly so I'm not concerned about anything being too stiff, and I'm happy to let the board punish me for any bad habits (I want to be able to ride switch at full speed - groomer carving, not just park lol - by end of next season). I'd consider myself on the hobbyist side of "expert," (idk if my vids do it justice - no self promo intended) and I have both a dedicated powder board for the deep days (2023 Nitro Quiver Slash 162 camber) as well as a NeverSummer board with overall rocker (2021 Shaper Twin) for full-time jibbing/fast trees/chundery snow, with Cartel Re:Flex bindings. I'm at the point where neither of those boards can handle riding groomers at the speeds I want.
    I think you've sold me on the Custom X... I'm just not sure if I want the 158 or 158Wide, and whether to go with Step On or EST bindings (I'm leaning towards Re:Flex Step Ons with stiff boots).

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Před rokem +1

      So based on the info given I would for sure go 158 wide. With 11.5 boots you will boot out on most turns with a 158 non wide. I would not do EST bindings as you have no interchangeability. With 3 boards its good to have bindings that work on all three instead of only one. I would go Step On or just plain Re:Flex if you go Burton with the Custom X. I'm riding for about 30 years, I love powder but in my region I mostly have to stick to the sides of the groomers to get some play. I also like getting some speed there and do some fast carving on the groomers aswell. I swiched to step-ons with photons this year, but with my weight an board I seem to lack grip. 190 pounds, size 5'11, boots 12. The board is a nitro team exposure wide 159 from 2019, which I seem to have grown out of (weightwise). Im looking for more stabilty, also it seems that since I swiched to stepons, that my fronstide is harder to switch to. Looking forward to any recommendations!

    I'm still riding a 2008 Custom X. It still drives and charges the hill without issue, I absolutely love it! A broken toe strap on my Salomon SPX90 bindings gave me the excuse to spoil myself with a new set of Salomon Quantum Carbons, we'll see how that pairing works for this season, I'm expecting good things. But...I was considering picking up a new Custom X (156 or 158, I'm 5'9' 165lbs, size 9 Salomon F4.0 boots) and moving the Quantums over to it. You commented that the new Custom X isn't as stiff as the older boards, and that was a smidge concerning to me. Do you think I'll be disappointed moving from the 2008 to the current model? If memory serves me correct the new CX is a little lighter and poppier than the one you have but the 158 is the call if you want similar control to the older 160 you have. The 162 is a lot stiffer/thicker because it's made for much heavier riders. It can work too if you want more speed and dampness but it will be harder to control. Hello,
    Great channel you animate!! I'm from France and not so fluent, so hard to understand all desciptions & benchmarks...
    First, I'm 1,70m and 62kg
    My board is a Burton Custom X 156cm from 2014 combined with Genesis step on binding and Photon boots size 10.
    In terms of use, no parks, just freeride, "groomed trails" and carving. to sum up, the kind of use you have in this video
    I have some questions...
    Winter is coming and I'm thinking about changing my board, but are significant improvements applied to the boards years after years or just a visual design change?
    If I decide to replace my actual Custom X with the last one, the feeling will be so new, amazing or just so so?
    Does the boards degrade over time? loss of stiffness, reactivity?
    If you have to compare Custom X with Nitro Suprateam... what will be your feeling?
    With my previous bindngs I was using the "channel".. now with step on bindings, I'm not link to ICS burton's boards (even if its a great
    brands and products!)
    Are boards quite similar? One more stiffer/reactive than the other.

    Hey James, you said the TM is between the Hometown Hero and the Custom. I thought the Flight Attendant is between the Hometown Hero and the Custom. In your opinion where the FA stands in Burtons line up? Is it comparable with the new TM? From the spec’s perspective they have some similarities.
    Thank you very much!

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Před rokem +2

      Yes the TM is very much in between the HTH and Custom for sure. The Flight Attendant is in some ways as well but the TM is more so. If you compare the FA to the TM the FA has more set back on board, more taper and most will ride it a little longer. Its better in pow and for directional riding. The TM has less taper, a more centered ride and feels more like an all mountain board. I'm in between sizes with the TM but if they had a 156 or 157 it would be perfect. The FA I ride at a 159 and that is a perfect fit. The HTH is perfect for me at a 156 and that rides like a shorter Flight Attendant with a little more set back on board. For reference I'm 9US, 185lbs, 5'10". Cheers!

    • @benjaminsimolka7187
      @benjaminsimolka7187 Před rokem

      Great explanation! For my specs with 160 lbs the 156 FA is great. The HTH in 156 is to big. But on the other 152 for powder/Freeride is strange. ^^
      So I keep my good old FA and hope Burton will keep it in their line. It is also strange in my opinion that they drop so many Family Tree boards and some off then are just all mountain and even not freeride. But the FA originally was Nicos baby and it was a true freeride Family Tree board.

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Před rokem

      So I would consider the NS Proto Synthesis too as that is the next step from the Peace Maker and Proto Slinger. You will be getting less camber, less edge hold, and in some ways less dampness. NS makes a damp board even with it's softer rides like you have/had and Burton (especially with the CXFV) goes for lighter and poppier even with their medium to medium/stiff rides. The CXFV will pop easier/a little better and feel lighter. It also will float better in powder. So your call here as there are compromises and advantages for both.

I am looking at the BCX 162W, or 166W, but I wonder if a 9mm increase in waist width is worth the $850 - will it prevent booting out on carves? Or should I go with a Donek board? Thanks for the advice and the video.

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Před 7 měsíci

      Millimeters matter in snowboarding and it's not just about waist width but what the width is over the bindings. Brands should show the width over reference because it's all dependent on the nose/tail width, waist width, sidecut radius and other factors as well. Going to an Aviator 159w would really help and so would a BCX 159w or 162w. There are actually tons of options out there that are wider and never boot out for a 10 out but still are much easier to control. So I would imagine you wouldn't recommend this for a beginner? I was looking at this one, but if you had to recommend a high end board for a beginner, with plenty of room for them to grow into, what would you recommend? (theoretically unlimited budget, and looking at burton options)

      You can see in the vid this flexes pretty easy and is more on the medium to med/stiff side so there are a ton of boards out there that are more stiff. If you use the filter options on thegoodride.com you can see all the boards that are stiffer.

      Don't go EST. You want to go Burton Cartel X Re:Flex in case you want to use them on another board. I can't tell you how many people I've helped who need to get new bindings as well as a board because they bought EST. So few boards in the industry have a Channel System/EST compatible board. Atlas are a great choice too. They are more adjustable, more responsive and more damp than the Cartel X Re:Flex. However, they aren't as cush or shock absorbent and don't have that smooth response that the Cartel X's have. So it all comes down to personal preference.

    • @belibeli5908
      @belibeli5908 Před rokem +2

      It is traditional camber board, it will be better than flying v rocker or hybrid camber boards. It also has frostbite edges, but if you ever ridden Lib Tech magna traction boards do not expect same amount of grip.

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Před rokem +1

      No it is not ideal for average riders. There are many boards even without disrupted sidecuts that hold better. Check the timecode in the video marked Edge Hold. Where do you ride and what is your ability level?

    • @thedude5510
      @thedude5510 Před rokem +1

      Make sure on any brand new Burton board to sharpen your edges straight from factory. They're not tuned and are extremely dull if you end up getting one. Anything full camber will work very well on ice if it's tuned properly.
      Magne-trac works well, but sometimes to me having it mixed with a hybrid profile board makes it feel slightly off balance on edge. Almost squirmy if you will. A lot of factors trying to work in unison all at once while on ice or really firm snow. I would take a full camber with mellow mag, grip tech, death grip, 2x Trac bumps, frostbite edges ect tuned correctly over Magne-trac any day.

    Fellow expert here: I’ve been riding for over a decade and it’s time to get a whole new set up. I’ve been looking into buying this board, a YES, or RIDE twin pig? I ride all day on the mountain, hit a lot of natural jumps, will hit and a few jumps in the park from time to time, butter ~10 times a ride, do 360s and hit black diamonds a few times each time I ride. I like pop, and will go fast on the mountain as well. I’m open to suggestions too
    What kind of board, boots & bindings should I be looking for? I also need boots that don’t hurt my feet anymore, my feet are always so fucked after a full day.

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Před 6 měsíci

      Tough call. The 158w will feel a bit chattery at your weight. I'm the same weight and the 158 (same recommended weight) felt a little too chattery. The problem is the recommended weight range and construction (much thicker/stiffer) goes way up in 162w so now you might feel too light. If you want an easy board to control go 158w. If you want something that will charge a lot harder but will it will be more difficult to turn it could work. How does the custom X compare to free thinker? Since both are pretty stiff and poppy board?

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Very different boards. Free Thinker is much better in powder with the early rise before the nose and taper. It's also a more directional/set back ride with taper. The Custom X is full camber and pops a little harder/higher but is pretty bad in powder and much more technical.

      Sorry I mesread. Yeah free thinker is a true twin/better for riding switch and it's more damp with less pop but still very good pop. The Custom X is more a twinish to directional ride that has more set back on sidecut and board. It has a good bit more pop but is less damp/chatter absorbent in uneven snow.

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Před rokem

      If it fits your specs and you want to compromise a little from each board to have a one board quiver then it could work. You have a pretty good 2 board quiver with a Custom and HTH so not sure if it is worth it. If you want to add a 3rd board to the quiver get something else like an asym twin or a more directional powder friendly board instead. One of those would better round out your quiver.

I'm massively happier with the 159 but we all have different preferences so give it a go then. Not sure if you will get more stiffness but you will get more camber though. If you want something for sure stiffer go with the Burton First Cut or see if you can find a Burton Leaderboard if you want something really stiff and aggressive.
