I have been using a homemade mixture of equal parts borax and baking soda for my regular washing detergent for years. Works just as good as the expensive detergents and I use plain distilled vinegar for the fabric softener. Works great and is A LOT cheaper than buying laundry soap and fabric softener. Great tip!
I was skeptical about this at first because I had washed my sheets adding vinegar and baking soda before with no success in whitening. But following your directions exactly the results were amazing!! Thank you for sharing
Do not ever be embarrassed when you help us. We all have problems, and you make a part of our lives easier. Bless you, girl.
Love it. I'm totally going to try this. Thank you for passing on good advice, and giving her credit. Very sweet.
Thanks so much for this:)
I've recently switched to all white bedding and never thought on how tedious it is to keep everything looking fresh&stark white.
I already use Nellie's All Natural Laundry Soda&Dreft because I have sensitive skin so I don't think Baking Soda&Vinegar will be an issue.
BTW,I believe my grandmother used to do this,I just never paid attention:)
We love it in the drain as well. Your aunt is a smart lady!
So I went to the store yesterday to buy the ingredients you mentioned and I tried it. I also added half a lemon bc I'm not really a fan of vinegar smell. This morning when I got the sheets & kitchen towels out of the dryer, they were white! Thank you so much for these tips. I will now wash my whites like this everytime. 😊♥️
I am SHOCKED!!!! This cleaned my sheets soooooooo well and removed dried blood completely!!! Wow!
I use this method of cleaning to wash my sheets and towels every so often. I probably should do it again. I am out of laundry detergent and this would be a good time to use the baking soda and vinegar. I really should try to stock up on white vinegar, baking soda, and apple cider vinegar because I use them all for soooo many things!!!
Good video, thanks for the tips! I'm getting ready to do a load of whites using your method. Just FYI, dryer sheets *are* expensive, yes -- *and* they are also laden with noxious chemicals. I throw in a couple of pieces of aluminum foil, shapes into balls, and that works great in the dryer. I also make my own laundry detergent that is unscented/non-toxic/contains no dyes. My reasoning is that everything ends up going back into our water supply/oceans and the pollution is finally catching up with us.
Hi! I love this so much. Honestly, for me, this process took a few cycles to achieve that super bright white clean finish.
I came across this video several months ago and now I spot treat the worst stains with Resolve carpet cleaner and soak an hour before using this method.
I now look forward to Sundays to super clean, fresh, and bright white bedding :) Thanks for the video!
I haven't used Gain recently, but I will keep my eye out for that detergent/dryer sheets. I love fresh smelling clothes/sheets! :)
WOW! Thanks so much for the information. I have been trying to find something that would do this for years. Although my husband bathes daily and often twice a day, he's just one of those people who produces a lot of oil. His whole side of the bed gets stained. It kills me that I buy beautiful sheets, only to have them get stained so quickly. I'm gonna go try this right now. Love your videos.
Awesome!! I am setting up my guest room with white bedding...on twin beds. This will be very useful keeping the sheets/comforters sparkling white!!!
Your presentation is the best I've seen so far. Thank you for the info. The only additional things that I add are borax and dishwashing powder. I occasionally use liquid bleach, but I'm very sensitive to strong chemicals, so I have to be careful. It's probably wise to add these things to a liberal amount of water so the chemicals don't react in an adverse (negative) manner. Thank you again.
Thanks for the info! I tried this and it worked!! I use flannel sheets year round and was frustrated with the yellowing. I love your videos!
I wish I would have been using this for years instead of just discovering it a few months ago. It helps so much! We've tried bleach, but I'm with you on the "wearing out fast" bit. Plus it can be messy and a pain to use. Happy cleaning!
I did just bleach the sheets and it did pretty much nothing. I was extremely disappointed in the results. About to try this.
Thanks for sharing this recipe for bright white sheets! It really works!
Good morning. I had a front loader. I kept the door open after use as there was a smell. Leave the door ajar after use. As far as vinegar and backing soda,....I do this all the time! It's really a great idea! I enjoy your vids.
worked great even on my tan sheets. also used same principle for my white sweater. it is now very bright and white.
I just got home and this REALLY works!! My pillows and their cases!! Thanx so much for this.. I'll be using it from here on out and won't hesitate to buy those white sheets I really want!
Thanks so much! I've been looking to make our whites brighter since I found the Dawn/borax/washing soda/water mix (pennies on the dollar) for whiteness also.
Wow, we are totally going to try this! Thanks for the awesome tip!
Wow, thank you for sharing. Amazing results and I'm thinking that it probably helps with the smell that occurs in a front loader machine. As well.
Wow this worked better than all the other methods i’ve used! My sheets and pillow cases are still a little yellow but much better than before!
I mix vinegar and baking soda and pour it into the fabric softener compartment . Was totally happy with the cleaning power. Next time will try your method . Thanks !
Hi Kathryn, I love this tip. I used baking soda and vinegar in my bathroom sinks and toilets. Haven't tried these together in the wash, but vinegar is great as a fabric softener. Also, I highly recommend using Wool dryer balls. No scent, but they are so inexpensive and you can add a few drops of essential oil on them after the clothes and dry. You just air dry them for about 10 minutes and they're amazing. I got my dryer balls on E T S Y. I've used subitofarmstore and pdickson3. You might do a video on using them. Love your family and videos.
Ugh I wish it wasn't midnight this makes me want to rip the sheets off and wash them right now LOL I'll have to try tomorrow
kaleidoscopicmind5 did it work?
Mmm KayK not at all 😭 I'm at my wits end. No amount of bleach or soaking helpssssss
angelofdreams2012 I have hard water
:) You've come along way Kathryn! Great tip!
I wear white shirts @ work. They are getting dingy yellow. Im going to try this on my white shirts. I love your channel on everything diy's, recipes, decorations, etc. You are such an inspiration. Merry Christmas & God Bless.
GIRL!!! Thank you SO MUCH for this tip!! Works perfectly on my white towels and white curtains!🙏🏽 Question: Can I use these ingredients on lighter colors? Like a light, light blue, or will the color be washed out? Our bed sheets are light blue and I was hoping I could wash my sheets like you wash yours.🤞🏼
Baking soda and vinager are wonderful cleaning agents when used together. I have also used vinager, bleach and hot water to clean mildewed shower curtains and other milded items (bathroom ceilings, attics, towels...etc). Baking soda and vinager paste also works great on kitchen sinks (porcelain and stainless) as well as tubs. And my trick for pet stains (urine, blood, snot, and feces)...peroxide! Test spot first to make sure it won't ruin carpet color or furniture. Clean the main mess up first, then sprinkle the spot with 3% peroxide (what you buy at the drug store) ...the spot will bubble up as the peroxide reacts...then blot with a clean rag or towel...repeat until spot is gone. This will also neutralize the odor.
+Tara L FYI warning: vinegar + bleach = TOXIC chlorine gas (yes, household products when mixed together can kill you), same goes for bleach + ammonia. Try googling it.
+Rob Abbott- Well aware Rob, but thanks. Yes, you have to be careful when mixing and use in well ventilated area.
Tara.
Just read your post. Sounds good.
EXCEPT. !!!!!
VINEGAR + BLEACH = POISON
you must NEVER combine the two
vinegar added to bleach causes the bleach to releases toxic chlorine and chloramine vapors. It can be deadly.
It's not something that would be obvious since each has a strong odor on their own. Mixed together the odor is not very pleasant but it is not necessarily alarming either. Breathe enough of the combination and it WILL harm you.
BUT, something interesting is that vinegar is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral, just like bleach is. BUT, bleach has toxic qualities. VINEGAR DOES NOT.
For cleaning around the house vinegar can replace bleach entirely.
Thank you for this!! I was ready to throw out my bfs work socks and some towels but this saved them! They look almost new!!
This is good to know! Thx!
Thank you!!!, my white cotton fitted sheets that had yellow/brown stains from my legs/feet are now clean and white! Tried doing this in a plastic tub first but didn't work, guess it needs the agitation from a washing machine. Have tried washing the sheets with nonbleach additives, and even pretreated with spray on stain remover, but could still see the stains, and avoided bleach because it can degrade cotton. But I could only wash two sheets at a time for it to work in a front loader. So next time soaked fitted sheet for 6 hr in OxiClean per directions and then washed as normal, fitted sheet came out perfectly clean and white.
will this method works on colored clothes or sheetd
I would say give it a try. You can pre-treat the garment directly using the same cleaners :)
Thanks, Debbie! :)
Yessss this is the video I’ve been looking for. You’re amazing, thank you!
Fantastic. I'm gonna try this.
Wow!!! .... it really works .... thank you
DO IT ON A DIME
@Doitonadime do you still use this method to whiten your sheets/linens, etc?
I find your videos so helpful & enjoyable to watch, your really great! What are your suggestions to clean the mold on the washing machine rubber sealer?
great tip! will try this my pillow case gets really stained from my hair products.
I use a sope call Zote. You can find it on the soap line in Wal-Mart. I just mealt in a pot with water or throw it in washing machine in pieces with hot water.
Love this use it on all sheets!!!

thanks😊
Thanks, SIGH.
I was about to switch to another video Thank you
thanks
thanks
for sure!
Thanks for sharing more great tips and ideas 👍🏻👍🏻💜🦋❤️
My friend has given me a beautiful white duvet cover but it had obviously yellowed/dulled over time. It's too pretty and in too condition to throw away so I have just grabbed it out of the linen closet and put it in the washer using this recipe....I hope it works, it would make my day/week/month/year!!!!
+Suzanne Porter Hi did it work ?
Yay!! :) Let me know if it works for you! xo!
I am trying it tonight and will let you know the result tomorrow. I am using distilled white vinegar which is used in cooking.
Wow, what a great laundry tip!! Thank you, I'm going to try that method to give extra whitening power to all our white linens, etc.! Thank you so much for sharing another great tip with us! I *heart* your videos!! :)
I know! :) Yet another reason to use it. I only wish I discovered it sooner.
Omg I can't believe I missed this video but I had seen one of your other videos with this informtion and I am so grateful for it because I use Vinegar now!
I have white sheets with a red embroidery, if I follow this method, would it affect my red embroidery?
Impressed!! GOing to try this on my regular whites too! Thanks!
Just want to mention: in my experience with also washing dog towels and bedding (a lot of it) If you have used bleach on your items before, then the yellow or grey will Not go. I have now switched to using on full loads 5kg 1 cup soda crystals, 1/2 cup baking soda, 1 tablespoon borax (this is an anti bacterial agent) 1 cup vinegar (the cheapest I can find any colour) and 1 tablespoon detergent (I often just use left over grated bar of soap). I put it in all at once direct into the drum. You can also use it on colour washing it won't fade the colours it will give life to them. I often also add two tennis balls into the load to give the washing a beating which will improve the cleansing action. If you put those same balls into the dryer with only a drop of essential oils on each, then you can do away with the dryer sheets altogether and the washing drys faster and fluffier with a scent you actually like. if you need an antistatic in the tumble dryer add a scrunched up ball of aluminium foil. Ps. Someone mentioned that their washing machine kept waster standing that made everything smell stale - A)check the filters regularly B) the vinegar, baking soda and the borax will stop any kind of smell as it cleans and descales the machine and pipes every time it's used.
Oh, this is helpful. You mention "soda crystals". What is this? The dog bedding drives me crazy. After washing it still smells and is full of hair. I have Pugs and Pugs are horrible shedders. I would like to give this a try. Thank you.
Iheart2cook I think that means baking soda
yoly507 Oh, ok. Thank you so much.
I cup dishwasher powder, 1 cup detergent, 1 cup bleach and 3/4 cup borax....wash on the hottest wash you can and youll have the whitest whites...works on grubby pillows too
yoly507 it doesn't mean baking soda, it's washing soda in a crystal-shaped form. only used for cleaning....
Vinegar is AWESOME! So many uses, so economical, so old school. I love it!
That’s amazing 👍. I can’t wait to try it out.☺️
2 years into cloth diapering and this is the best for getting the diapers "glowing white" I'm glad I stumbled into this video.
That was amazing, thank you so much from Paris, FR.
Excellent video. Cannot wait to try this. I’ve actually used vinegar and baking soda to deep clean my mattress, and it looks almost brand new again. I’m a hot sleeper, and sweat a lot
Would this work for towels?
if I misx it all in the benning, will it then work? Will the reaction be too much, and cause too much air build up inside the washer? :)
Love this, thanks. FYI--I no longer by Downey or dryer sheets: now I use white vinegar in the rinse cycle. Keeps the color longer and towels are soft and fluffy. It saves me a lot of money.
Does the vinegar method work alone where you don’t have to use dryer sheets??? Or only when used in conjunction with the baking soda? Do you see lint on the clothes without using the dryer sheets and using this method? Thanks
Great tip! I have white sheets too but they never get that yellow or with stains I use arm n hammer detergent leaves them so white and bright!
Beatrice Lombedo I know this is an old post but do you use the powder or liquid form and can you use it on colors?
@@pinklight911 Powder
Thanks so much for your advice.
Used this hint on my nice percale sheets that have turned off white over the years and they turned out much nicer and really soft again! Nice!I had to chuckle though, before I listened to the video and heard you introduce your channel as "Do it on a dime",I saw the title and it, as all one word DoItOnaDime, reads "Dolt On a Dime". (Chuckle)
WOW! Thanks for sharing this. I will try this later.
YES!
I love your videos.
Could you make one on gardening: what's your routine, what you plant, when and how, and how's it's been working out?
Thanks a lot
That's so awesome. I've always wanted to make my own detergent, but I haven't stepped out and tried it, yet!
Will the baking soda ruined my super duper washing machine?
This recipe would be AWESOME for a duvet! Happy cleaning. :)
Hope so because I just watched your video for that very reason. I use a sheet between my body and my duvet, and I keep enough sheet at the top of the bed to fold down over the duvet at night. It keeps it cleaner longer so I laundry sheets a lot more than this duvet. But the duvet's top is becoming slightly darker and a little yellow at the top, so today is wash it day! Going to try your method ...
I can't wait to try this! Makes me want to leave work & go wash my sheets! Lol!
The front-loading ones are usually HE, the are just more energy efficient :)
I started using vinegar in the laundry years ago when I had babies and cloth diapers. I used it in the rinse cycle as a natural disinfectant and softener. Now I add it and the baking soda to anything I want clean and deodorized. Great tip. Thanks for reminding us all.
The vinegar in the rinse right ? Never with the baking soda directly ?
Vinegar is in the rinse only/
@@sinda11 thank you
Thank you :)
Borax and white vinegar plus reg laundry soap work beautifully too.
I also will soak my whites in my machine for a few hours if really not bright.
My grandma taught me this- I’m 60
Thank you. I'm going to give it a try. I will post my picture when I'm done
I have used BS/V in my kids laundry because he has sensitive skin. I never thought to use them for my white sheets!! Thanks for the tip!
I have to say, this really works! Does it work on other Whites like Towels and shirts etc??
vinegar and baking soda work really well to get odors out of things. I love doing this on my towels when they get musty.
Curious to know if you’re still using this method and if you’ll use it for sheets with whites and color (ie toddler bedsheets that are primarily white with color designs)? Thanks!!
Hi Catherine, I love your videos very helpful. Could you use that method on colored sheets to remove order? I have two grown boys so you can imagine. Please let me
- Haydee
Use a clothes line. Very best secret.
On a sunny day~
This method and a sunny day line dry will make the sheets brand new looking again and if you pin them nice and tight they look ironed
And add some lemon juice. This helps in the sun! :)
That is true.
You are the best. I'm so stuck to all your videos.
Great video like all of yours!
When the sheets and pillowcases were in the dryer, they still looked yellow.
Is it the dryer heat that manifests the whiteness from the wash? Or am I missing something?
Thanks!
+Debbie Schultz They looked yellow from the light, they weren't really still yellow. The heat from the dryer wouldn't have affected anything. I've been using this way of washing my clothes for over 3 years now due to allergies and I don't always use a dryer to dry my clothes (fleece and crocheted items) so I know for a fact that it doesn't.
Thanks so much for your video! Ill definitely give that a go. I think you could also do them on boiling hot to get them extra clean xx
I love using vinagar and baking soda in my washer. I use my own homemade laundry soap, but love the vinager. you can even put some vinagar into the washer with the soap. I know the volcano thing, but you can pre mix it, let the volcano work, then when reaction if over put it. vingar helps with hard water I beleive. I was great when I washed my girls diapers in the laundry. most of my cloths come out very nicley with out stains. Thanks for the video.
thanks, will definitely try this. l literally stopped buying white sheets because I couldn't keep them crispy white. used a variety of detergents, didnt work. so....I am super excited to try this. Any tips for getting stains off baby clothes.... please...
thanks for the advise. Question can u use for colored clothes?
Yes! :)
I haven't, but I bet it would work wonders (we don't have any white towels, actually, just blue, brown, and tan ;) )
Thank you so much for another wonderful video!
xxx
I had similar issues with brand new white towels and hard water. Vinegar in rinse cycle got them really clean and much fluffier but not whiter. Used a bluing solution and bam, white. Will try baking soda. Cheaper if it works as well. Thanks for tip.
great tip, do you know if it would work on white clothes, thanks love your videos.
im trying to make my light pink pillows white..do u think it will work?
When is the rinse cycle? Like how do you know if you dont have a high efficiency machine?
It should be marked on the dial of your machine for the wash cycle you're using which should be cotton/whites.
Is there any odour of vinegar on the fabric using this method? and, would it work if you just soaked the articles in a bicarbonate of soda & white vinegar solution rather than putting it in the washer? Thank you.
you can add the 1/2 cup of vinegar into a downy ball so it will naturally disperse in the final rinse of the cycle. 😊
