flying to southafrica to visit family, we always flew with virgin atlantic, on the 787-9, and hearing this is one of those special memories of flying on it, especially after flying 11 hours (KSFO-EGLL or EGLL-FAOR and vice versa)
You hear the electric version of the demand pumps that are air driven on all other Boeings, come on as heard at about :16 seconds in, and no the A350 flaps are still slightly quieter since there's no demand pump on the A350
It's the flap transmission Power Delivery Unit (PDU), sits in the middle of the aircraft and drives the transmission shafts to the flap actuators. Modern aircraft like A380 have 1 electric drive motor and 1 hydraulic drive motor, some aircraft have 2 hydraulic motors, they drive a differential gearbox which takes the drive down both wings, there will be another separate system for the slats, I think the flaps and slats often deploy together and so you probably hear both systems. The motor systems are independent from each other to give redundancy capability, so the flaps can be deployed on a single motor if there is a system failure. The noise you hear is the PDU motors and gearbox spooling up.
thats right lol flew on a 787 to California 2 weeks ago soon as she baked out the gate and pilot began checking the flaps this exact sound started and never stopped until after takeoff. noise returned while landing at LAX. its all good was a great experience awesome aircraft. 757 still my favorite though
For those who said the sound is annoying, for this flap, the sound is a must. Bcus this is to let the pilot knows whether the flap is moving or not. Without the sound, they will never know if the flap is down till the end
It is not actually hydraulic, the flaps are run by electric motors. The 787 has an electrical system that is run by 2 generators per engine, producing almost 1.25 mW of electrical energy
@@blueguycommenteryt7054 its called PTU, Power Transfer Unit, and is not there on any Boeing aircraft, its only found on the A320 family, my guess is that whine was of the RAT, Ram Air Turbine

I agreed. One of my favorite Boeing plane is the B787, BUT I really hate the hydraulic noise too. It's especially super loud if you sit in middle of the wings, like in the video. My second B787 flight was also on the similar seat like in the vid and it's super annoying. They made it so that the engine noise is so quiet now, but the hydraulic noise just defeat that purpose of reducing cabin noises. The sound of the flaps extending, by themselves isn't loud and normal like on any plane, but the hydraulic sound itself don't stop. I read on the google that even dog transported on a B787 had to go to a therapy session. Due to the high pitched noise. It's not loud if you are sitting behind the wings or in front with the engines view. If anyone tell you they actually like that non-stopping high pitch noise. They probably had never been on the B787 or on the wing seat or had their ears clogged from the pressure. It was making me go insane. It's not that bad in the video, even in the one I recorded from my flight. but IRL, it's bad. I enjoy loud plane engines sound too, like the B777 GE90. but this is NOT it. If you're aviation geeks who love plane engines noises then that's even more reason to dislike the noise, because it really drowns out the amazing [engines noise] that every aviation geeks love. The B787 engines noise is already low to begin with... But despite all this, I still love the B787. This problem can be solve if you select other seating. lol
How can people dislike this, so beautiful
Opinions exist.
if you dont like it means need to chill
787 has some really good sounding mechanics
Am I the only one who like the sounds?
It was quite annoying to be honest.
No
I love it too so beautiful sound
It’s like music to my ears, for me being such a tech geek.
To me, it just sounds very relaxing. I could fall asleep to it. Put myself in the mood of being on eight hour flight somewhere
I love hydraulic sound so much and as well the flaps sound so beautiful 👍🏻👍🏻
Now this is some of the reasons why i love 787
787 is so futureistic sounding
I agree
comments that get highlighted like reload the video lol
Always travelling on 25A or 25K just to enjoy this amazing sound 💕❤️
i was lucky to fly this plane multiple times and I was really surprised how powerful this plane is in terms of breaking. like wtf.
Love that. Almost a perfect A...slightly on the G# side, but definitely musical.
I fly this plane multiple times with American Airlines and I love that hydraulic sound before landing or take off. It’s like music for me

I'm wondering what the hydraulics are doing to make the noise. But I am in love with this noise and actually got rid of my fear for flying. 😍

THIS..SOUNDS LIKE BEAUTY..
Best sound ever!!!

And they say that the 787 is so nice when the 737 literally has no sound for flaps..
@@Temprest_The_Tempest no sound can make us concern🥲

Nice and quiet until someone starts coughing 🤣 there's always that one if you agree 😂
sounds very nice

1.25 milliwatts?
The flaps weren't that big of an issue for me, but there was a very high-pitched whining noise that lasted for the entire flight (like at 4:00).
tool-using animal absolutely that noise was heard during take off as well. What could that be?

Those jack screws are fun to hear
I believe it’s the sound of the cmsc on the aft e/e bay?!
The Preparing To flap sound
It's just a big screwdriver that drives the bolt that moves the flaps/slats.
More like a malfunctioning AC ahh sound
that doesn't sound typical normal when the pilot deployed the flaps. it's more louder then the engines spooling up.
Great video ! 5ubscribed
Same flaps sounds of 787
How do you even deal with the sound?! Sounds like something that will be ringing in my head for hours..
Airbus A350 flaps have a more horrendous high-pitched noise compared to this. Heck even the 767s have quieter flaps.
Your point being...? "These flaps sound fucking terrible, but hey... Airbus' sound worse"? Fuckin' mediocre fanboy
I hate the 767 in general

Why can’t we just come together and say every flap sounds are great? Fucking love the 787 hydraulics sound but the 350 is also amazing.

B787 has hydraulics?? :0
AirPlane Sounds broken
This sound was a landing gear because you hear the flaps quiet than the gear so it was the landing gear or fuel pumps
