  • Once one of the greats of rugby union, David Pocock is now striding a very different playing field. Subscribe: ab.co/3yqPOZ5
The former captain of the Wallabies has become a powerbroker in the Senate and is seen to hold the key for the Albanese Government to pass its legislative agenda.
Having first profiled Pocock in 2015, Australian Story goes behind the scenes again as Pocock tackles his first few months as the new independent senator for the ACT.
Everyone wants a piece of him and we see Pocock flexing a different kind of muscle to secure the amendments he seeks to the government’s historic Climate Change Bill.

Said it before, I’ll say it again: David Pocock is a good bloke.
Honest and legitimate. Obviously emotionally intelligent, and able to think critically. An excellent role model for all Australians.

As someone from Canberra, I'm genuinely really proud of him - he seems to be actually representative of the ACT and the issues Canberrans care about, and he's a lot more engaged with the community. He's basically the total opposite of his predecessor who got his job through grubby means and very consistently worked against the interests of the ACT in those rare times he actually attended parliament.

Well said. Privileged upbringing, old school tie, great wealth and a life now devoted to activism across of range of the most fashionable causes does make him the ideal senator for the ACT. For the rest of Australia which has to generate those tax dollars that keep Canberrans in the manner to which they have become accustomed Pocock and his Green and Teal peers will make life a lot tougher.

Wonderful and inspirational report. Thank you your stellar documentaries. Regarding this great guy’s political ventures, I can only share a thought from an international lens. Sadly, great people can go into politics to bring change. However, in time, those same people yield to the system-even without knowing it-due to the politics behind politics. I hope he does well. But as in most cases, those with a drive to bring change eventually become part of the fraternity caught up in the political population and increasingly becoming far removed from the very people they strive, in the beginning, to represent. To combat this, break up the political circles and let those in that realm remain in the workforce and neighborhoods and THEN speak up for change.

His football career over and his wealth amassed, Pocock is suddenly concerned that human activity causing climate change. The register of interests shows Senator Pocock has three homes in three different cities - Canberra, Perth and Brisbane not to mention an investment property in Whyalla where the biggest employer uses coal to make steel. Maybe only other people's emissions cause climate change.
