- Once one of the greats of rugby union, David Pocock is now striding a very different playing field. Subscribe: ab.co/3yqPOZ5
The former captain of the Wallabies has become a powerbroker in the Senate and is seen to hold the key for the Albanese Government to pass its legislative agenda.
Having first profiled Pocock in 2015, Australian Story goes behind the scenes again as Pocock tackles his first few months as the new independent senator for the ACT.
Everyone wants a piece of him and we see Pocock flexing a different kind of muscle to secure the amendments he seeks to the government’s historic Climate Change Bill.

Love this guy. Amazing story. Played his heart out for his country. Cares passionately about things that matter and acts. Genuine, full of integrity, leader. I hope he makes an equally significant contribution to Aussie politics.
Coming from a Kiwi and a diehard all black supporter you are a legend David an absolute legend I wish you all the best mate Kia kaha.
Said it before, I’ll say it again: David Pocock is a good bloke.
Honest and legitimate. Obviously emotionally intelligent, and able to think critically. An excellent role model for all Australians.
As someone from Canberra, I'm genuinely really proud of him - he seems to be actually representative of the ACT and the issues Canberrans care about, and he's a lot more engaged with the community. He's basically the total opposite of his predecessor who got his job through grubby means and very consistently worked against the interests of the ACT in those rare times he actually attended parliament.
Well said. Privileged upbringing, old school tie, great wealth and a life now devoted to activism across of range of the most fashionable causes does make him the ideal senator for the ACT. For the rest of Australia which has to generate those tax dollars that keep Canberrans in the manner to which they have become accustomed Pocock and his Green and Teal peers will make life a lot tougher.
When it's -5C in the morning do you really believe in global warming? Get real.
@@davidcarter4247 ^ This. He's never had a real job and is away with the fairies on real life issues. He's perfect to get the Labor agenda across.
@@zenvagabond At least he represents what his electorate wants. That’s the trouble with conservatives: you’re deaf.
@@davidcarter4247 life was already getting a lot tougher. Wages on the slide, the economy on a slide, climate on a slide, integrity, women, gender issues… all thanks to nine years of right wing ideologues and religious nut jobs.
Awesome to have someone of serious integrity and conviction in Parliament.
Zimbabwean by birth. Great people. Vote for him. You'll never regret it. He'll get the job done.
Amazing story for a top bloke kudos to you David..Allblack forever mate..but you are a true warrior pal
Your doing a good job in your new career
As a Kiwi you have to admire his skill on the rugby field an absolute weapon, he played one of the most combative positions in the game that sort of experience will be needed to get him through his political career.
Wonderful and inspirational report. Thank you your stellar documentaries. Regarding this great guy’s political ventures, I can only share a thought from an international lens. Sadly, great people can go into politics to bring change. However, in time, those same people yield to the system-even without knowing it-due to the politics behind politics. I hope he does well. But as in most cases, those with a drive to bring change eventually become part of the fraternity caught up in the political population and increasingly becoming far removed from the very people they strive, in the beginning, to represent. To combat this, break up the political circles and let those in that realm remain in the workforce and neighborhoods and THEN speak up for change.
A thoroughly decent fella!!. Hope he makes a positive impact.
Great job david australia needs you.
He's a spectacular Human. Huge fan here in SA.
Thanks Canberra. Top job. Senator Pocock makes for a sterling representative.
Legend. Heart in right place
I wish there were more people with his attitude.
He seems to be a wonderful man. I love that he values integrity so much. As a rugby fan i can say he was one hell of a player too!
Where is Zimbabwe, It’s in Queensland 🎼🎼🎼🤣
Good luck 👍 we are all tired of Korruption 🙋♀️❤️
Absolute king
I would’ve loved seeing Pocock in a bok Jersey 🔥🔥
Nobody wants to see nobody in a bok jersey 😂
Is anyone else a little bit in love with Emma Pocock??? 🤩🤩🤩
No but her comment about ‘not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good’ really impressed me.
future pm? are the right mature enough for that?
Can’t be done. He’d have to be the leader of a major party and that’s not going to happen. Maybe president when we become a republic.
Very privileged person. Very lucky to be in the position he is. Many people don’t ever get close to the types of opportunities this guy had.
Tired of 'One Nation'
Just dont ask him to total up all the co2 he was responsible for jetting around the globe for a decade. That was then, this is now
Do you expect him to just stop? Travel by yacht, like Greta Thunberg did? Don’t think that would be very practical. Did you not hear Emma Pocock’s comment about not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good?
@@thethirdman225 expect him to shut up when his job required over the average co2 emissions, which he happily accepted, now anyine whose job requires the same, its a different story. Do as I say, no t as I did.

*_"expect him to shut up when his job required over the average co2 emissions, which he happily accepted, now anyine whose job requires the same, its a different story. Do as I say, no t as I did."_*
Once again, you're allowing the perfect to make an enemy of the good.
Not a very compelling argument.
What are you doing to help the environment? Do you fly? Because if you're going to criticise him for that as a mark of hypocrisy, then maybe you're leaving yourself open to exactly the same criticism yourself.
@@thethirdman225 i am not bleating and judging others. I shut up, use what I use and allow others to do the same.
@@johnhynes7784 That's a proud boast... If everyone thought like that, we'd still be in the stone age.
He wants to please everyone…. That’s impossible… Also read his policies… he is extreme left wing….
Only if you’re a Sky After Dark watcher. That’s the trouble with you rusted ons: you’re deaf.
Another Canberra politician in favour of wasting money on rainbow colored roundabouts.. awesome!!
As opposed to wasting money on carparks in coalition electorates where they weren’t needed…
If not for fossil-fuelled jets carrying him around the world to play football we would never have heard of David Pocock. His football career over and his wealth amassed, Pocock is suddenly concerned that human activity causing climate change. The register of interests shows Senator Pocock has three homes in three different cities - Canberra, Perth and Brisbane not to mention an investment property in Whyalla where the biggest employer uses coal to make steel. Maybe only other people's emissions cause climate change.
When you've got nothing left, attack the man.
@@MrDesignit It is all about the man and what carbon gave him that he now wants to deny others. Pocock's jetset football career is not historic. It was after global warming became an issue and ended only two years ago.
@@davidcarter4247 preventing the impacts of climate change will allow people to continue to do these things....
He's not saying people shouldn't do those things so don't be disingenuous.
@@MrDesignit What I hear is a man who has known nothing but privilege since he was born, whose livelihood is not dependent on affordable reliable energy living in a city almost immune from economic downturn demanding other people make sacrifices so he can feel good.
@@davidcarter4247 renewable energy is cheaper than fossil fuels though? And it's also capable of being deployed in remote locations quickly and easily.
You're out of your depth attacking this man and his arguments.
Captain Woke.
Another Sky After Dark watcher. Yawn.
