Inside the Aussie outback music festival built on a 'crazy gamble': Big Red Bash | Australian Story

  • Greg Donovan was in his early 50s when he was made redundant from the Sydney insurance company he’d worked at for 20 years. Subscribe: ab.co/3yqPOZ5
    Instead of investing his payout, he took a massive gamble and used it to bankroll a musical passion project in Munga-Thirri country, on the outskirts of the Simpson Desert near Birdsville.
    Eight years later, the Big Red Bash has evolved into the world’s most remote music festival, playing host to some of Australia's most famous musicians.
    Promoters and managers around the country were awestruck that someone with no experience in the industry could pull off such an event.
    For musician Jimmy Barnes' manager, John Watson, it's proof yet again that a "crazy person with a good idea" will always be able to find a place in showbiz.
    Featuring music from Jimmy Barnes, Missy Higgins and John Williamson.

    Can't help but compare this to the fiasco of Fyre Festival back in 2017 ... the opposite in just about every way!!!! Another Aussie making us proud!!!!!

      Yes, nothing like Fyre Festival and yet everything like it was supposed to be! That concert ended up being an insult to the entire music industry. There used to be a documentary on Netflix about that fiasco, was certainly interesting to say the least! This Aussie guy def got it right!

    Interesting that it wasn't mentioned that they're not just doing the Birdsville Big Red Bash anymore, they've expanded and started doing the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash as well - which is a little more accessible for many people that can't make it to the Big Red.

      @@theStevenPowell I'll rephrase. They're not ONLY doing the big red bash anymore, they've expanded... there's now two of them. The big red, and the mundi mundi.

    Oh look: Burning Man. Who'd have thought that doing what Burning Man had been doing since 1991 would be a proven business plan?

    • @bev9708
      @bev9708 Před rokem +13

      Black Rock Desert is 100 miles from Reno, a city of about 300,000 people and a major tourist destination with intense transport infrastructure, in a state of well over 3 million in a country of well over 330 million!! Birdsville is 450 miles from Mt Isa, a town of about 19,000 people or 1000 miles from Brisbane, a city of 2.6 million, in a country of almost 26 million people! So your "proven business plan" sarcasm does seem kinda ignorant!!
