I use the X8 to film live metal concerts and weddings. Only frustrations I've had are it will overheat and shut down on AA battery power. I started using it with USB power and it did a little better, but I've also had it overheat on USB when I forgot to pull the AA batteries out of the back. For short interviews it's flawless, but for recording 3-4 hours of music in a night I feel like I push it to it's limits. That's running phantom power to only one XLR input for the room mic to capture crowd audio
So that’s why the x8 jumped from the $350 range to $390 all of a sudden 😮 Still, all the features plus the combo jacks for $30 more seems like the way to go. Thanks for the review Matt!
The X8 is so versatile, and all microphone connections work. I have had a 3.5 and an ELR plugged in at the same time. The difference in price currently is minimal. Buy the X8 you will be happy you did.
I sold my X8 because it was just too big. No combo jacks is a deal breaker for me since I use the 1/4 jack to pump LTC in. I recently picked up a Zoom H5 and it’s perfect. It allows me to change out the capsules depending on what I’m doing. Plus it records a -12db backup track so it’s really a 6-track recorder. I’m surprised they don’t advertise that feature anywhere.
I'm gonna bet... judging from all the reviews I've seen over the years... that I'm probably the only person on earth whose top buying criteria for field recorders is... believe it or not... headphone volume output. If you're in a highly reverberant environment, it's nice to be able to clearly hear what your microphones are picking up... and whether the sound engineer (who is busy and has better things to do than worry about YOU) has set the gain staging for the cleanest, least distorted output to your recorder.
Already bought the X8 because of your review about it! Thanks for making this review and making clear that I'm not missing a thing by not having the X6 instead
As a wedding filmmaker, the lack of combo jacks is a deal breaker. There's too many good alternative recorders with combo jacks and it's a convenience I'm not willing to give up.
@@DanielMurcha yeah I don't really see the issue. For me, it's no more cumbersome to bring an XLR to XLR and XLR to 1/4". As opposed to XLR to XLR and 1/4" to 1/4". Lol still two cables that you can get for like $9 each
I am glad I picked up an X8 in a promo. I love the flexibility/ versatility of that. Although I would sometimes like a smaller unit, this X6 seems to fail due to the lack of jack inputs. Were the mics removable like on the X8 and allow connection of other TRS mics with plugin power , it would make some sense to me. Actually, the lack of jacks is why I have not jumped at the Zoom F3. Yes you can use XLR adapters, but they make a small recorder bulky. Also, I very rarely need to connect 6 sources, but I often need 3. Lets see what comes next :)
Does this device allow you to record sounds from one XLR microphone to a memory card and at the same time send this sound via a usb c cable to a smartphone?
If I understand correctly, I can connect the plug-in power directly to the X6 in contrast to the X8 3.5 stereo microphones without a splitter. For binaural recording, this could be a big advantage of the X6 over the X8.
I still have the Tascam DR40 and it works like a charm... A device that was released 12 years ago... Still very reliable and gives me what I need. It would be nice to upgrade to get the 32 bit float but I really don't feel the need to. Nice review Mat...

Matt your review on the X8 persuaded me to buy it and I love it! I actually agree with you that if found on sale it’s better to go with the X8 for the extra features. Maybe setting the price on the X6 at around $300 would help justify buying it vs the X8. Great review as always thank you!

Agreed I was hoping to see $199 or $225 to compete with Zoom's pricing but it's overpriced. Why would a consumer buy that when the upgrade to an X8 is relatively less than $100 in the market?

It'd be one thing if it'd just been holiday pricing, but it has been at this price since at least September when I bought it. I think a sub $300 price would've been smart. $250 and I could see this becoming as popular as the H4n was 10 years ago. Like you said though, maybe they'll lower the price.
@@ChristopherCabello I think $250 would've been a compelling price, given the Zoom F2 is $180 and this certainly packs more features when it comes to 32-bit float recorders. That'd place it firmly in the H4n Pro pricing where you trade off 2 extra XLR inputs for 32-bit float. Regardless, that we're able to get 32-bit float at this price point at all is a very good thing, I just don't know why people would go with this over the X8 given the small price difference.

I'm pretty new regarding audio and I had a problem in the past with my dr-40x clipping : It was plugged into a dj sound board, I adjusted recording level while doing mic check and it was great. But when the dj played the music, the sound recorded was clipping like crazy (even with the second safety audio -12db and limiter on). Will 32 bits prevents that kind of clipping when there is a huge sound level difference ? Or maybe the x6 or x8 have a better limiter ? If you or anybody have any advice, I would be very grateful. Thanks a lot !
I still have two Tascam DR 40s. Very OLD design but they served me well. I want these but they I will have to explain to my wife why I have a 5th audio recorder lol. I'm glad these use 4 batteries instead of 3. That's what bothered me about the DR 40s. I am always left with ONE extra battery.
I would agree with another commenter here that I'm afraid to drop the x6 and break those microphones on top and I cannot replace them ....with the x8 you can buy replacements

I was wondering about this for the last 9 months as well, then I realised that Matt had provided that download link to a file recorded with the X6. I'm assuming he really didn't process the audio, so I'm happy to have figured out there doesn't seem to be any noticable ultrasonic whine (at least not in the recordings). I slowed them down a lot and there didn't seem to appear any artifacts.
Matt, I'm confused. You were talking about the input jacks on the left side. To me, those inputs look like combo jacks that can accept either XLR or phone plugs. Now I'm currently using an older D-40 X and it has the same jacks. BTW, good review thanks.
MATT please help with a monitor question. Trying to find a monitor for my a7iv where I can see the AF square box, face tracking and tapping for autofocus ON the actual external monitor as well as the sony lcd screen while recording video. Can't seem to find any monitor that supports this. I've seen the portkeys monitor that supports touch to autofocus but I find it so strange that there isn't one monitor on the market that shows the touch tracking box on it. I feel like I would constantly be looking at the LCD screen which defeats the whole purpose of a monitor. Any advice?
the biggest issue coming from a Tascam Dr100 Miii is that tascam removed the LITHIUM BATTERY which eliminates power redundancy... just crazy they would do that
Thank you for the review. I like the more compact size of X6, but I fear for the non-detachable onboard mics. If these break on X8, there's a chance I can buy spare ones from TASCAM, but with X6 I'm doomed, and buying a portable recorder for me (recording live concerts, rehearsals, and interviews) is imperative (I do have Zoom F6 and love it, but it's a very different kind of sports, when you're already shlepping instruments and other music equipment to the gig). Have been considering Sony PCM-D10, but it doesn't offer 32-bit float and only two tracks at a time, with all its obvious advantages of easy physical switches that I like much better than the app menu. Go figure...
@@whoismatt @Tommy-82 There's been several firmware updates that have "fixed" some of the issues. I've had mine for a year now and love it. Biggest complaint is how fast it sucks AA batteries. Feel like I have to buy fresh new batteries every wedding. Guess I should just buy some rechargeable ones.
I have the Canon R6 Mark II and R7. I’m heavily debating on switching to either an A7SIII and A7IV or two A7IVs. I’m tired of Canon limiting their cameras and lenses and want the greatest low light and dynamic range performance. What would you recommend I do? Switch to Sony or stick to my current cameras?
I was HEAVIL invested in canon and RF. My gear got jacked an I was considering Sony next. However I really like the LUMIX S5iiX. At my main job I use Sony but I love all the video features that lumix shoves into their little inexepensive cameras.
I would think that this unit is good for much more than weddings... especially since I hate the idea of weddinization ceremonies. The 'ol court room works just fine for me LOL okay, I'm done being simple. I'll get to learn some other applications through this video, I'm sure

Have you evaluated even a single alternative on the market? This is far from the best field recorder by any stretch - there are major circuit digi-noise issues at certain freqs, the form factor is atrocious, the touch screen response and UI is awful to use in the field and the remote app is unusable. Not to mention thebwasted space on the top with the below amateur grade built in mics. Did you actually turn either of these on and use them to record or just look at spec sheets and how shiny they were? Bizarre conclusion you have reached my friend...
What 32bit alternatives to X6 and X8 would you recommend in the handheld recorder category and at a comparable price range?… Actually, forget about the price part.
Each cable is 1 meter; if I’m plugging into a celebrant’s PA I only need a mono out so I can use an XLR make to female as an extension cable for any other of the cables if their speaker is high up off the ground. If I’m plugging into a DJ or musician’s desk I can plug into whatever output they can give me and recording a stereo feed covers me incase they have the mic sent only to the left or right chanel.
I have the X8 and Zoom H6. I love 32 bit float, but the X8 feels cheap compared to the Zoom H6. The X6 doesn’t look anything different in terms of quality.
Before I bought my Tascam audio gear, I did a lot of audio comparison and personally felt the sound to be a bit much "fuller" with the zoom slightly on the high side, I guess we all hear sound differently. Just but what sound good to you cause everyone makes great gear this days.
Even though Tascam makes great gear (I use the DR40 as a back up recorder and it's amazing)......just get the F3 if you're a wedding filmmaker. It's all you need and it'll save your life haha.
Why not make a filmmaker version or let's say JUST FOUR XLR COMBO INPUTS, REMOVE EVERYTHING, INCLUDING THE STEREO MIC KEEP 32BIT FLOAT, EEP SCREEN SIZE OF X6 That would be great, I bought the X8 and loved it Stilling to buy X6 with the above features.

They should've at least had ONE combo jack instead of none. Pretty dealbreaking for musicians on an otherwise excellently designed device.
You can get XLR - 1/4” converters for $10 but yeah, wish it was built in

Why is it that when an external microphone is connected to the xlr input, a small signal indication lights up on the other input (input is disabled)?
With this 32bit, do you need any special apps to change the volume/gain to a normal level. Or will any player work just change the volume/etc?

how is the recording quality of the internal mics are they as good as the sony pcm d100?

I remember there were some issues with the X8... how did the product develope with firmware-updates? Any major updates?
Mines been stable. Not sure about firmware updates 🤷♂️

Yes, it's a typical bluetooth distance same as you would have with headphones etc.

This was a lackluster release....maybe if it was $289...but it being $30 less than the x8...i just dont see the point. Fantastic video BTW. Now tascam...give us a plug on recorder thats 32 bit float...new dr-10x upgrade
Have you evaluated even a single alternative on the market? This is far from the best field recorder by any stretch - there are major circuit digi-noise issues at certain freqs, the form factor is atrocious, the touch screen response and UI is awful to use in the field and the remote app is unusable. Not to mention thebwasted space on the top with the below amateur grade built in mics. Did you actually turn either of these on and use them to record or just look at spec sheets and how shiny they were? Bizarre conclusion you have reached my friend...
What 32bit alternatives to X6 and X8 would you recommend in the handheld recorder category and at a comparable price range?… Actually, forget about the price part.
I don’t see the lack of combo jacks as a disadvantage; you’ll still need to carry 3 sets of cables for plugging into XRL, TRS, and RCA outputs.

@@fernandobonenfant two of each of the following: XLR male to TRS male, XLR male to RCA male, XLR male to XLR female.
Each cable is 1 meter; if I’m plugging into a celebrant’s PA I only need a mono out so I can use an XLR make to female as an extension cable for any other of the cables if their speaker is high up off the ground. If I’m plugging into a DJ or musician’s desk I can plug into whatever output they can give me and recording a stereo feed covers me incase they have the mic sent only to the left or right chanel.

I have the X8 and Zoom H6. I love 32 bit float, but the X8 feels cheap compared to the Zoom H6. The X6 doesn’t look anything different in terms of quality.

F3 is great too! So many good recorders these days
Before I bought my Tascam audio gear, I did a lot of audio comparison and personally felt the sound to be a bit much "fuller" with the zoom slightly on the high side, I guess we all hear sound differently.
Just but what sound good to you cause everyone makes great gear this days.
Maybe it's time to upgrade my DR-40? It's a winning horse, so the decision is not easy...

A $20 difference is not large enough a deal for me to no go with the original. It just offers more functionality.
Even though Tascam makes great gear (I use the DR40 as a back up recorder and it's amazing)......just get the F3 if you're a wedding filmmaker. It's all you need and it'll save your life haha.
Well, am a wedding Filmaker and never giving up on my Tascam gear. Best investment ever!

Stilling to buy X6 with the above features.
The music and podcast features are just "apps" on the recorder, so removing them wouldn't make much of a difference
