    Dave this just may put a spring in your step: I just got into CZcams a couple weeks ago, and although I have other favorites, notably Far North Bushcraft and Survival and Survival Russia as well as Girl in the Woods (incidentally how I found your channel), tonight I just finished watching your last video I had not seen. This is the first time I have ever watched every video a person has made, giving you a unique status in my CZcams experience. I may complete other channels but there will never be another first! Thanks to you and Brooke as well for sharing. When I was 9 I moved from Alaska to Michigan, so I’m sure you understand how well I relate to both of you. Cheers!

  • @KevinsDisobedience
    @KevinsDisobedience Před 6 lety +2

    I think Sam winning this season shows that bushcraft as a “course of study” is not necessary to win the contest. That isn’t to say he can’t build (shelters, traps), use a knife, or make a fire-clearly he can do all that because he DID all that, but he did it because he was living out there, not because it’s some kind of art.
    I only learned the term bushcraft in the last few years, but I’ve been camping all my life, and we had knives and axes then too. I think Ted and Jim said it best after they won: “it’s about who can suffer the longest.” I mean, hell, they slept on the ground under a tarp and ate bagsful of “sea bugs” in order to survive.
    As far as I’m concerned anybody who lasted two weeks or more is a certified badass. I’m doing a solo overnighter this weekend and I’ll be glad to get home and take a shower after that. Thanks again for the insight, Dave-although I have no desire to be on the show, I would kill for a similar type of experience-minus the cameras.

    • @Bushradical
      @Bushradical  Před 6 lety +2

      I think we look at things the same way. I also never heard the term "bushcraft" until a few years ago, and it has been boiled down since then to almost a "college" course. When I hear someone talk about the proper way to use a bowsaw or talk about the minute differences between Japanese Pruning saws.......well I just tune that noise out.
      I know a few folks who have spent major time in the bush, trapping and mushing dogs etc....and their gear is junk, and they don't give a hoot what some survival instructor thinks is the best grind on a knife.

    • @KevinsDisobedience
      @KevinsDisobedience Před 6 lety +1

      I hear you, brother. Yours is a much needed voice in the CZcams community of survival “experts.” While I like good tools just as much as the next guy, it’s not the gear that gets us outside.
      I just spent the weekend in a $50 Colman tent, and it did the same thing a $500 Big Agnes tent would do.
      I’m just not willing to spend stupid money on gear when I can get essentially the same thing for a lot less. Anyway, thanks for your perspective.

    Great video. Interesting things you talked about but the backstory is good, if you sent a video of you showing different skills then you might get near to being picked but would probably fall down when they asked what else you can do. You said about having made videos of previous adventures and that goes farther than just a skills video. Survival schools can only teach you things where you are other than the international skills. I mean you can't teach what to eat if it isn't available. You see it with some contestants who come prepared for living where they come from then are dumped into a wilderness where some of their equipment is useless. In Season 6 someone commented that looking at the other seasons taking a bow was the last weapon you wanted as in most areas they were useless unless you wanted to expel tons of energy making a fire.
    Thanks for this video, it answered some questions I had wondered about myself.

    On an aside, I'm going to be building a home from storage containers, because I just don't have it in me to cut down, debark, and mill trees (not a tree hugger, just seems like a lot more work that I am prepare to endeavor). I just recall your video where your tent shelter was trashed, and thinking a storage container would be a great way to keep your stuff secure. It's bear proof! Seems like your log cabin is pretty well established though.

    • @Bushradical
      @Bushradical  Před 6 lety

      Storage containers....Like a Conex? those things you see stacked on ships? I know a few folks who have done awesome things with those.

    • @ellea3344
      @ellea3344 Před 6 lety

      Yes exactly. lol Weather proof, fire proof, water proof, bear proof... It sound ridiculous the first time you hear about it, but you can make an epic cabin with them. Can build on posts, and the real cost savings is in the hidden costs of maintenance, and time. You can build a home in months instead of years, and build your doors/windows just inside the doors, so you can insulate the doors, and they would still be functional for securing the home, or for buckling up for warmth when winter or night hits. You've got your thing going with logs, and you're fantastic at it though. Maybe you could make one for when the kids grow up, and you don't wanna process logs. lol

    • @shawnr771
      @shawnr771 Před 6 lety

      Shipping container structures are an outstanding idea.
      They do have draw backs. Research very thoroughly what you intend to do and look for others that have done it before. See what problems they ran into and adjust your plans accordingly.
      If you plan on burying one in the ground like some people do. Be very careful about your plans. I have seen several videos where the containers either crushed due to weight of the dirt or rusted out because of ground moisture.

    • @ellea3344
      @ellea3344 Před 6 lety

      Burying a container is silly, they are not designed for lateral loads (backfill or earth). Basements in cold weather/wet environments are silly. I'm gonna build it on concrete reinforced pillars prolly 2 ft off the ground. Going to use 2 or 3 containers on the outside (40 ft High Cube) of a with hollow core/concrete pre-cast planks in the middle (24x40ft total floor space) for the floor and roof (2,640 sq ft). I can build a 2nd or 3rd story on top if I want or need more space.

    • @shawnr771
      @shawnr771 Před 6 lety

    Great tips! I've always wondered about the process.
    I liked the encouragement to just be who we are because in the end when a person is refined/broken down by the Alone experience like going without food, coming to terms with the possibility of animal attacks and even missing family, you will be exposed for who you really are. So why make that a surprise to everyone in the first place?
    The biggest challenge for most Alone participants is eventually the lonliness, how does one prepare for that? (Rhetorical question)

    Hey Dave have you ever had problems in your log cabins due to shrinking or expanding due to season change or drying? I heard a commercial builder discuss it and it seemed they needed special techniques to deal with it, for instance around windows... appreciate and experienced insight!

      When you build with horizontal ones you have settlement issues, and you need to leave space above windows and doors for the logs to shrink and settle. About 1/4" per foot.

    • @Bushradical
      @Bushradical  Před 6 lety +1

      .......here's the deal.....I don't think they are taking people outside north America. "Because" there is a good chance that the show will get franchised at some point, then there would be an ( Alone Australia) and an (Alone Europe) etc. There have been rumors for a few years about that.

    • @BushcraftAndCampingAdventures
      @BushcraftAndCampingAdventures Před 6 lety

      @@Bushradical thats really interesting dude. and makes absolute sense. the australian bush is another level, the outback is insane. would make amazing viewing..similar with some locations in europe. if they were to do that, it would reinvigorate the show and allow it to claim 'global' cred.

    • @Bushradical
      @Bushradical  Před 6 lety

    Or do you just send an introduction email, wait for a contact then show them your CZcams?
    Not sure what the proper etiquette is in this situation when applying.
