This is a slightly rambly/story-heavy video about some of the lessons I have learned in my first two years of knitting along with a few tips and tricks that will hopefully help your knitting journey get off to a good start. If you want to make an accurate swatch (that won't lie to you) you need to make it way bigger than 4x4". That should be what you measure and it should be in the middle of you swatch. So a 6x6" would be better.

Oh my gosh, can I relate. I thought since I crocheted, knitting would be so easy, and then when it wasn't, I was so hard on myself. Letting myself be a beginner was the hardest thing, and finding the right videos that clicked for me was also a journey. Take your time and be kind to yourself always. Happy knitting 💚🧶💚
this is a great video!not a new knitter (knitted my whole life basically) but love to see videos like this so people that dont have the rivilege of learning this craft at a young age and having a relative to teach them can see that the struggles they're having are normal. My tips for new knitters, and just everyone who knits is to be okay with frogging, when you need to frog that might feel like a waste of time, but it isn't. You spent that time doing something you love, and also you get to learn from it. I have come to a place where frogging doesn't bother me at all, which before it bothered me a LOT, so be kind to yourself!

The sweater you’re wearing (and probably made!) is gorgeous! I taught myself to knit via CZcams videos, and they really are so helpful. I initially bought a set of wooden interchangeable needles, and I didn’t know why I was struggling so hard. I got so frustrated I stopped for a year. I then changed to plastic interchangeable needles, which were a lot better, but the transition between the cord and needle kept snagging my yarn. Everybody says that metal needles aren’t great for beginners because they’re too slippery, but as soon as I splurged on a nice metal set, man, I finally feel like I can actually knit!
LOVE your knitting origin story 😂 Hard agree that knitting has made me a much more patient person. And that no techniques are really too difficult, it's all about following directions really.

I'm totally the same way - once I started knitting continental (from a crochet background), the gears finally lined up and there was no stopping me! My man isn't toxic (found a good one!!) but you're so right. I need him to tell me he doesn't think I can clean the apartment. Stupid guy...always believing in me... 😂
Hey Maddie! I'm a new subscriber (just discovered you today) and I'm your upstairs neighbour up in British Columbia, Canada! Hey! A piece of advice that I give everyone who is wanting to learn to knit is that it is a steep learning curve at first, but once you get the hang of knit and purl and become familiar with the way patterns are written, then it's quite easy to advance. I think A LOT of people give up right away because they are having a hard time with k & p. But it takes practice and it takes time for your hands to learn the motions.

This is amazing. You are amazing. Please just keep talking, I love your personality and your way of explaining things. I learned how to knit in middle school and made a few garter stitch scarves and one or two hats in the round that definitely weren't bound off properly. I picked it up again in 2023, and jumped right into garments with Handmade by Florence! She has been a godsend for me, as well as Kutovakika, and the Crazy Sock Lady. I love that we live in an age where this knowledge is so accessible and there's such a low barrier to entry for a craft that can be as low or as high end as you like!
The crazy sock lady is who I single handily credit with my ability to do short row heels, bless that woman lol. Also you’re so nice, thank you!!!
So relatable! Pushing through the hard part in a learning curve is something I always have to remind myself but as you pointed out - we all learn in our own time. I picked up knitting 10 years ago, but I only started garment knitting very recently. I wish I had been confident enough started learning the “big skills” earlier but through it all, it’s still fun and relaxing and gives me great joy - something any craft should do.
I’m glad you mentioned the whole frustration with garter/stockinette. It took me way too long to understand what was happening. I personally found knitting to be too confusing at the beginning stages and I had too many questions with no one to ask for help. Luckily I was able to get into a knitting class at my LYS, and it’s boosted my skills and confidence 😊
We love an LYS knitting class!! I’m so glad I’m not the only one who had that problem with stockinette, I feel seen lol
I just dove into knitting head first last year and didn’t know that English was an actual style - I’m from continental Europe, so you can guess which technique I use. I just thought some people knitted weird 🙃
I think learning to knit here in Norway has has ensured three things: (1) you knit continental (2) you knit with wool (3) and you most likely knit PetitKnit patterns if you’re young 😅

Never thought about gauge in the way you describe it - I learned to swatch by aiming to knit yourself a piece that is just over 4" x 4" and THEN go ahead and count the # of stitches and rows that are within 4" across and 4" down. The advantage I see with this mentality is that it allows you to choose sizing (or modify sizing) of a pattern based on YOUR gauge if you can't meet the stated gauge or if you like your fabric in the gauge you create even if it is diff than the pattern. Tayler Earl has a cool video about this concept and has helped me a lot in sizing for my body! Fun vid girlie.

Yes I had the same confusion over stockinette and garter, lol, didn’t understood what knit the knits and purl the purls meant, now 8 mos later and I’m finishing my 5th garment, love knitting!

Continental knitting is more difficult for me than English or flicking even as a crocheter of over 50 years. The reason is I’m left handed and have been holding my yarn in my right hand all that time for crocheting. Even though I’m left handed I just can’t get used to or get it right holding my yarn in my left hand. Continental may be easier for some but certainly not for all 😉👍
My advice to knew knitters is do NOT start with backwards loop cast on. It's easy to start off with but you're gonna find you get a long length of yarn between your needles which get farther and farther apart.
Start with something like long tail cast on, knitted cast on, or even crochet cast on if you're a crocheter. Something with more structure that isn't going to just fall apart and leave you frustrated right out the gate. There might be a bit of a steeper learning curve, but it's worth it imo.

No wayyy I’m crochet to knit as well and I cannot figure out how to continental. I want to, cause continental seems way faster! The holes are too small for me to do all that yarn maneuver 😂
Keep practicing!! You will get the hang of it eventually! Also maybe try larger needles
Understanding tension is for sure the first thing I didn't know a thing about when I started knitting. This is so important when you start working with yarns/needles that maybe aren't beginner-friendly since the "easier" yarns and needles seem to hold tension all their own without needing to think about it much. When you see those videos of people knitting super fast, you need to realize they are keeping the tension super tight throughout which is why they don't need to pull the new stitch tighter after sliding the old one off, or why they don't have to take a second to ensure one stitch isn't crazy big while another is super tight. This is more important to remember with slippery yarns since your stitches will keep growing if you stop paying attention to how tightly you're holding your working yarn.

Hum... I think learning to knit Continental might be easier of you are right handed. As a lefty crocheter and knitter, I hold my yarn pretty much the same way for both craft, so I knit English style. I tried to understand continental, and I just can't. Also, the world fastest knitter is an English style knitter so... I believe the fastest way is just the way you are most confortable.
