Wholeheartedly agree with tagging people for giveaways. Imagine how difficult it is for me as I do not have any friends who are interested in knitting or crochet. I’m also surprised to see so many popular podcasters winning giveaways 😉
I enjoy your podcasts. Thanks and have a great weekend. Happy knitting ❤

I so agree with pattern pictures! I can't buy a pattern if I can't see the whole thing! 🧶🧶🧶

Pattern pictures! Yes!! I recently bought a sweater pattern and discovered that the front of the garment was not shown on any of the pages. Only the side and back were shown.

Swatching. I once knitted large swatches that went a several stitches beyond the 4” at both ends, and the same with the row count. Now, if the gauge is 18x24=4” I cast on 18st and knit 12 rows for 4”x2” swatch, sometimes I’ll knit the full 4” rows. I pull the swatch off the needles and measure, then I’ll frog the swatch to use the yarn in my project. I’m ok with a ball park estimate and it works for me. I’ll also check the gauge as I’m knitting.

Before trying DPNs for socks, try using 2 16" needles. It's so much easier than DPNs or magic loop (in my opinion), and doesn't hurt my hands like 9" circular.

Ooo good to know! I’ll definitely have to try! Thanks!

Omg those pups at the beginning! I love it!
I actually made a reel not long ago exactly about why I hate the term "selfish knitting" -- I 100% agree with you here.

Yes! Selfish knitting is not selfish! 👏👏👏

For socks, I've tried most options and settled upon flexible double points! I highly recommend giving that a try.

I started out using DPN needles. Switched to magic loop and never went back.

Totally agree on the picture pet peeves! I would add showing lace or textured patterns in dark colors 😕🙂

And I humbly add moving hair so we can see the back view! I want a pattern with short row shaping to bring the back up - if that isn't stated in the pattern description I might be able to discern from a photo. I really liked this video and your consideration for all perspectives. Keep the great videos coming

Oh yes! There’s a reason why successful pattern samples are always knit in whites, creams, beiges, grays, and light neutral colors!

I don't personally use social media, but I feel like if I had to tag a friend, then I am being used as a tool to advertise that giveaway. I'm not saying that it is good or bad, but I would feel the same way as you about tagging a friend.

    • @knitcalifornia
      @knitcalifornia  Před rokem

That’s exactly what it’s all about, and I have (and probably will in the future) run giveaways like that on my own page, but I just don’t always feel comfortable tagging others in giveaways lol

I agree with all of your opinions especially the last one, why take pictures of a garment with scarfs around your neck or jewellery or coats or hair like you said if you don’t want to showcase your pattern…I love all your videos, this one is great for a change up 😀😀😀

❤ I can tell by this video in particular that you are a very nice person. You have valuable knowledge you share in all of your videos and your skills are excellent. I am glad I found your CZcams channel. I definitely share a lot of your opinions and you gave me a lot to think about in some cases and good advice on how I could maybe respond to some peoples comments. One opinion that gets my Irish up are the stash shamers. I get so much pure joy from knitting and crochet that it would never cross my mind to be so disrespectful to a fellow yarn enthusiast. In closing, I like your dogs, thank you for sharing them with us. I have a wonderful black lab named Sadie. Everybody thinks their dog is the best …. And they are right! All the best. Joyce

Yes you need to block sockssssss especially if they are cabled! The knit and crochet thing- my issue is that the people that tend to ask me when I’m crocheting are people that have seen me and knitting in the past. Or they’ll ask me to make them something that is clearly crochet and get upset that I can’t. This was a good one!

    • @knitcalifornia

Knitting pants or shorts would be scary. I think they would sad and bag after a wear or two. Especially if they were made with machine washable yarn

I just found your channel and am so glad I did! Thanks for the excellent content! I agree with most of your opinions, however I can see that you love ruffles and peplums and I just cannot lol I think part of that is that I’m very short (under 5’) and they make me feel like a little kid 😅

You can use your one hook for multiple projects at the same time, but if you haven't finished with a knitting project, you have to buy a new pair of needles for each new one. And knitting projects often ask for multiple sizes+lengths of needles. so imho it's definitely cheaper to crochet than to knit at least until you have build yourself a stash of needles/bought a (quite expensive) set.

Swatching is a time and wool saver! I mostly create all my knits without written patterns. There’s no way to know the gauge or aesthetic of wool/pattern combos without swatching. Even when I use written patterns, by the time I figure out my gauge is off, or I don’t like the pattern or the yarn texture or color on a piece I am creating, I have wasted much time and wool. One of my first knit sweaters sat in my closet for years unworn. It was a pretty knit but it just did not fit me at all. A complete waste of many many hours and skeins!

Worsted weight yarn is the chunkiest yarn I want to work with and they are mostly cardigans. I live in a Cold winter climate and I need to wear heavy coats and scarves. Chunky will not work.

My comment has to do with short rows. I’m not sure if the unpopular opinion is that they’re a pain, or fun to do? And then there is the wrap & turn vs German short row opinions. I actually prefer wrap & turn, but I’ll do whichever method is mentioning in the pattern. Liking w & t is probably the unpopular opinion!

opinion here: I don't want to sell my work! why is it that when ever people find out you knit they want you to open up a shop and sell it.

I HATE when designers post a corner of a pattern and they don't have follow up photos to show the other parts of the piece. Fine if you're showing detail and don't show everything - but at least show all parts of the design. ALSO - some will ask for test knitters - like WHAT WOULD I BE TESTING? aaahhhh ...
