- Gluing in a guitar neck is one of my favorite parts of the building process. All the bits come together and, when it’s all said and done… Hell, you have a guitar on your hands.
Okay you still have a lot more to do but you are in the home stretch. In this video We show y’all how to glue in a couple different styles of necks a Gibson mortise and tenon as well as a Texas Toast “Wedge” neck.

I know the pain of the forgotten side dots. Fortunately I only really needed up to the 15th on my own guitar, which is all I could reach with my drill.

I really appreciate your vids man! I been building 20 years and your videos still inspire me. Thank you. Titebond Original can reactive when moistened which is why they recommend builders use Titebond II.
Yep, I prefer Titebond II for most applications when building guitars and basses. I'll use a different glue if I think it's better suited for what I'm doing, like using Titebond III and Gorilla wood glue for parts of my work benches, and epoxy on my dust collection system on one bench. Good to hear the manufacturer recommend II for instrument builds.
I use Original Titebond for everything, the other stuff isn't aliphatic resin. I recommend y'all use whatever you like the best.

Matt, can you either do a brief video or explain the process of designing a set neck vs a bolt-on? We are building bolt-on necks only at school but I'd like to learn how to do set necks (I've been told they have more perceived value). Really interested in the difference between the two as far as design and setup/process....By the way, this is Dave S, from Nashville (Nutter's student).

I all ways tape off any places that the glue may squeeze out.whipeing with damp cloth ,even then,no matter what glue you use,it still stains,and sanding sometimes won't remove

To avoid accidently drilling holes in the back of the guitar body, I dry clamp my body, locate the cavity and drill holes with a hand drill very slowly in the side of body where the glue surface is. It is surprisingly easy to drill and to locate where the holes will fall.

Keep up the good work with the videos, I’m diving into some builds using techniques I haven’t used yet and these are really helpful. I may have a couple questions for you very soon!

Another Colorado builder on CZcams says you MUST let the glue dry and then CHISEL the squeeze-out away. I shit you not. He claims that, if you wipe it, it permanently seeps into the grain. (You know what's more permanent than that? Chisel gouges.)
My response to glue seeping into the grain would be... so what?
I guess everyone has their own way of doing things but that technique sounds like much ado about nothing
You don't get chisel gouges if you know what you're doing. If you're getting gouges, then you need to lay that chisel down more.
Seems that the glue that was left to dry would still have seeped into the wood, so that doesn't make much sense to me, lol. I do agree that glue getting into the wood where you don't want it isn't a good thing tho, at least for stained guitars as you'll see where the glue was. Painted guitars don't matter tho.
I thought the chisel gouges statement was humorous, also. I try to remove squeeze out right away, but not using water. I have had a few occasions when the places I wiped away glue with a wet cloth were dramatically affected in how they took stain or dye. And because the glue was pulled into the wood by the water, surface sanding didn't resolve the problem.
@@Metalbass10000 I agree. Wipe it with a paper towel so it doesn't soak in too much and then just do some surface sanding once everything's set and you're golden
That's my all time favorite guitar model its hard to find one affordable and in left handed custom edition but i do love the ML Gibson Flying V and V2 models but the moderne is number 1

Man, that is one long tenon on that Flying V. Don't know if I've ever seen one extend past the pickup cavity before. Then again, I've never built a V. Lots of glue surface on yours. :)

Matt your Awesome*** I have a question what is the difference between gluing or bolting on the neck on a L.P. type guitar?? Iam asking because I really dont know what the advantages or disadvantages are. Thanks Matt..
Thanks Blind Man60, attaching a neck with bolts screws or fasteners has several advantages... the neck can be removed, the neck can be shifted for alignment in numerous directions including shimmed for bridge issues. The neck pocket doesn't have to be particularly tight. You can finish it in two parts, etc... A set neck has some advantages that include people think it is a classier way to do it (I know I do), there isn't a need for a blocky heel (some bolt on necks don't have this... most do and glue is much cheaper than chrome hardware.

I’d like to see how you go about creating the neck tenon and pocket. I have 3 Gibson-style builds in progress and I simply can’t get a clean joint. The concept is easy, but the execution...not so much.

The pickups had to be completely dismantled. Once I figured out what was doing what, I was able to save the bobbin windings. nothing like a P90, very strange design. Anyway no copper shielding, no paint and no 60 cycle hum. I’m curious to why you didn’t put glue on both surfaces. Our old timer wood shop teacher back in the day would beat that into our heads. The one time I didn’t do it, a big chunk of maple came flying off my table lamp I was turning on the lathe.
I have heard the old timers say that too.

I never saw the need for that, however, I have heard of woodworker's doing it. Maybe it's an old school thing... I'm not sure.
I hear lots of working techniques that I don't use that both do and don't make sense to me. Dissent make them right or wrong.

Could you share your philosophy regarding Titebond vs. hideglue (removable)?
Hi Joel, I don't really have a POU (philosophy of use) for various glue types. I haven't given it enough thought, nor will I, to have it be a thing. I would say that if you are building guitars designed to be disassembled than adhesive, of any kind, is not what I would use. I have used Titebond original for a long time and it has never let me down. You should use whatever you like best too
@@TexasToastGuitars Since I learned from a guitar repair guy, he always espoused using a glue that didn't make it unnecessarily hard for the next guy after you to get in there and repair something if it needed repairing. Both Titebond and hide glue loosen up with heat, so either one accomplishes that task. More time intensive to pull apart than a bolt-on neck, but still doable.

So that V seems like a thick boi - was the '58 that thick or is this a deviation in your design.
78 V was my first guitar (that I bought in 79/80 via lay-a-way, and I still own today) - I love all things V! DID YOU KNOW - the radius on the "shoulder cuts" at the base of the neck is the same as the ends of the "V" (you can mate them like a puzzle piece)!
I hope you guys get a partnership with that Talenti Gelato company - that stuff is the shit, and the containers make great work jars! :)

I can't remember but I think I used my 2.2 degree sign plate. It sets the bridge on a 24.75 scale just right for a TOM

Hey Matt, are neck through body a major PITA? I recall a guy that came into my high school woodworking class that built a neck through back in the late 70s. Apparently he was a former student or buddy of the teacher or something. I remember watching him & asking questions when I could, stealing some time from my assigned projects. Thoughts on neck through?

If I get into that riverwood I want I'd like to try a neck through out of the timber. Still haven't found anyone diving for wood around here. I'll keep trying until I succeed or fail... I think I'm so smart I'll do it myself ;)
Are the wood glues different today than way back when? I was told to let the overage dry, not to wipe. Back then, I guess, wiping would push the glue into the grain & show up in the finish, letting it dry would allow knife/chisel removal & not affect the grain.
You was told wrong brother! Divits are a ton harder to fix than a light sanding. Isn't it a good thing to get glue in the grain, making a stronger connection? I mean, that's just logic.
@@Damaged262 Not the joint I was talking about per se. the bleed out around the joint is what I was referencing. Back in the day (70s), ya let the dry then removed with a sharp object. After seeing Matt wipe & water cleanup the glue overage, I'm assuming the glues have changed some. I used to wipe excess glue back then & enr up sanding a divot to get the glue out so stain would take.
@@electroKrunch I totally get your point, I was more trying to be a smart ass than be an actual expert, since I know tons more about aquariums than I do guitar building.That's why I ask more questions than solve any. Unless you need some help choosing an aquarium filter that is.

Titebond and as far as I know all aliphatic resin glues will get into the grain and keep the wood from accepting stain evenly. Not a problem if you're not staining the wood. Chiseling the glue off at the neck set stage it very risky from the wood damage point. I use hot hide glue for most of my set necks these days because of easier clean up and a no creep joint.
This was great. I've only ever owned fenders and this will sound really, really dumb, but I sort of don't ...get.. set neck guitars. Like, with all the string tension, and the neck just glued in place, why doesn't it just rip the neck right out of there?
I mean, obviously it doesn't. And for lotsa people, set necks are preferable for the toanz and shit.
Is glue just way stronger than I think it is? Or maybe the string tension is more pulling down the length of the neck and not out in front of the guitar, so it's not actually much force working against the joint? Maybe I'm just an idiot - I'm gonna go with a little of all those things.

Which leads me to ask, why can't you glue in a neck of a screw on neck? It would lead me to believe if you wood up those holes with some dowels, you'd be able to glue it and then be able to cut some of that wood away for better fretting on those lower frets, or even use dowels to connect the neck instead of screws and the glue would expand the dowels. I've wondered about that since my first Epiphone. Thanks.

Texas Toast Guitars yes. With a bolt on you can shim if necessary. How would you adjust the height or angle of the neck?
I would say that if you are building guitars designed to be disassembled than adhesive, of any kind, is not what I would use. If you have miscalculated the neck angle and glue it in you will need to significantly alter your design or remove the neck with heat. Guitar necks that have glue, screws or bolts all work well. Use what you like the best

@@TexasToastGuitars from that 1design it's in the tone control /it has 2legs for Volume/ 2legs for tone control, and 5, legs on the output jack , with the original orange drop cap / with the original wires, I played it this morning , with the 6inline kluson tuners , all yellow now.

It's funny how so many guitar players think a set neck is more "premium" than a bolt or screw in neck. I prefer to make set necks not because they're better, but because require fewer operations than a set neck.

Like I said somewhere in this comment stream glue is much cheaper than chrome plated neck hardware.
Noticed the tenon to body area on front had a couple small gaps. Is there a reason for that or will it get filled?
If you look inside the neck pickup route of most Gibson guitars, you'll either see no tenon at all, or much larger gaps between the end of the tenon and the end of the route, sometimes nearly as a much as a 1/4 of glue/paint.
I was actually wondering the same thing. They look a bit larger than what I would have expected. Probably a painted guitar and will get filled?

Well, from what was visible, the joint on the V seemed perfect, and it was pretty deep. I'm easily amused by watching builders make nice stuff with good machines. Meanwhile I'm stuck in a basement with chisels and a cat that keeps getting in the way.

We do that often but this time the pads on the clamps were enough. We didn't need too much pressure

@@TexasToastGuitars well not the biggest but very common. This speaks to the point you were making about neck fits that are too tight. If you are fitting a very tight neck pocket having glue on both pieces will give you more work time to move things around. i learned this the hard way
Almost guitar are espensive only his name but the quality are poor like gibson ibanez fender esp they all mass produce. I bet handmade guitar like ric toone guitar,jet guitar,ed romans guitar,mcnaught guitar.

Set neck guitar is the cheapest of all guitar construction.,less cost only cheap glue less man power very easy to break less sustain and stability.
I agree with almost everything you (and Ed Roman) said here.
However, to do a mortise and tenon correctly is not an easy thing that just anyone can sit down and do correctly the first time.
