    I have always had a thing for the Gibson SG shape. Hell, my first guitar was a Gibson SG, so was my second. I knew that it had to have been done on a shaper of some kind and with the help of Steve from Maximum Guitarworks the mystery is now solved.

    Interesting coming across this as I'm building my first SG type right now. I've already done the bevels with Shinto saw rasp and Iwasaki files, but haven't decided on the neck joint yet. It's a 24 fret and I just radiused the fretboard. Honduran mahogany with an imbuia top and slice of wenge in between at 1 1/2" total thickness. Imbuia headstock cap, too. Pao ferro fretboard with wenge dots and binding. It also has the p/u selector in a LP position and a Strat output jack on the back.

  • @markpell8979
    @markpell8979 Před 2 lety +1

    Matt, I'm sure you know about this but here's my tip, which has saved me much trouble and grief while shaping mahogany in particular but many woods with similar characteristics: When the hook angle on your router or shaper bit's cutting edge (or hand tools like rasps too, actually) threatens to grab and rip out chunks on curves, corners or occasional 'runout' sections along the endgrain, long edges or faces where the grain structure 'opens,' back off from the normal forward cutting direction in that part and 'climb cut' or back into it so there is little or no hooking action. Takes a sensitive touch and caution that the machine doesn't hurl your workpiece into the wall or coworker because you'll be pulling the work past the cutter rather than pushing toward or into it. Also a nice trick for a quick cleanup pass after completing your initial wasting and shaping passes cutting forward. Love your work, man!

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  Před 2 lety +3

      Climb cutting is something we do not recommend here. Having said that I sometimes do it myself but only in rare instances.
      Rather, we recommend larger cutting tools as in diameter... The shaper has a 3" cutting head and it's size gives you nice clean chip free cuts.
      I would NEVER climb cut with it.
      I have also rarely seen CNC machines that have a climb cutting tool path.
      I know it does work but, like I say, I don't recommend it.

    Nice. I've made a couple SG Diablos (can't be fully done your way in this video) mine were also 24 fret as well, and I've always wondered why Gibson puts on those spacers instead of 2 more frets.
    This was pretty interesting. For those wondering, you can do the same thing with good files without too much effort. I think this way is quicker and more consistent.
    If you could show a way to get the neck angle set for good bridge height every time, that would be cool (sorry if you already did)

  • @michaelmenkes8085

    I made an SG using a good template that had the contours just etched onto it. Had to trace with paper, cut it out on the body, and use a saw rasp to create all the bevels. Went faster than you'd think, but not THIS fast. I'd need to have a big demand for my SG's to justify a router bit this specialized.

    Hi everyone. So 4 years ago I had an idea for a guitar. It would be a semi hollow no f holes, any body style with a Fender or Gibson scale length but with only 19 frets. I've noticed that in my 30 years of playing I've very rarely went past the 19th fret. This would give enough space for 3 or 5 pickups HSH with splitting humbuckers or SHSHS where I could vire it as a Gibson and a Strat with a 3 Rd switch that would be dedicated to switch between the Strat or Gibson wiring.
    If you want please feel free to use this idea to build your own. I think it would be an interesting build. Also the different tones that it would give with a SHSHS would definitely be a unique build. Please feel free to use the idea if you wish, and good luck with the build.

    I've been adding bevels and contours with an angle grinder equipped with a 45 grit flapper wheel for years, and haven't looked back. It's not for everyone, and there is some follow up work to do, just like with this template and cutter set, but for making a half dozen guitars per year, it's far cheaper. Makes a helluva mess. Best done outdoors if possible.

      @@TexasToastGuitars Agreed, but so far I've been lucky, or resourceful depending on how you look it at. I've at least broken even on any guitar I've built and sold. It's not my main gig though, and I use a lot of reclaimed wood. Where I live there has been a lot of old homes and buildings being demo'ed for new development over the last few years. It takes time, and often you need permission to dig through building rubble, but I've found old hard pine, Douglas fir, some mahogany, some old, incredibly hard birch. Got a few 8' long x 2" thick ambrosia maple shelves from a school reno a couple of years ago.
      I build guitars with no guarentee of selling them, so I limit my expenses wherever possible.

    I don't want any trouble for you, but I wonder if Gibson will ever come down on CZcamsrs who share instructions on how to fabricate Gibson models. They did just win a lawsuit against Dean and one of the charges was counterfeiting, despite the fact that Dean did not use the Gibson logo or headstock. All I'm saying is, it's better to keep a low profile, when it comes to any issues with Gibson. Just my 2 cents.

    Not long ago The Gibson channel released a promo film from 1967 where they show a few machines and people making various guitars, including what looks like the SG model being routed on a gear-based looking template. I can't remember the name of this method of machining but just wanted to mention it. But Your method looks good, too. Great channel!

      David, for Gibson to care about this or any video I have ever made would mean that they would have to know I exist... I assure you they do not.

      @@TexasToastGuitars that’s fair. It’s disappointing that the guitar market (meaning for the most part the consumers) and CZcams has moved to this lowest common denominator mentality where giving a video a title which bashes one manufacturer just because it’s seen as the “cool” thing to do is how to get success.
