Is Ireland An Antisemitic Country?

  • There's been a lot of debate recently on Twitter/X regarding antisemitism in Ireland and whether much of Ireland's largely hostile reaction to Israel may be driven by it.
In this video, I wanted to offer my perspective as an Irish Jew. But in summary:
    1) I do not believe that Ireland is anti-Semitic but ..
    2) There is anti-Semitism in Ireland and
    3) Enforcement of hate speech and incitement to racial hatred is, in my opinion, particularly poor there

I get the narrator but only to some extent. It is true that historically there is very little friction between Irish and Jews. As a matter of fact, both were allies against British colonialism. However, there is recently a growing antisemitism and it is scary. If you consider rabid extremists like Irish MEP Clare Daly and Irish MP Richard Boyd Barrett who can barely hide their antisemitism under the guise of so-called anti-zionism. There is among Irish society, especially the young Irish students, a dangerous antisemitism. Irish Jews are few in number but they are nonetheless in danger.

It's true we don't have the kind of vicious all out barefaced antisemitism you get in European countries like Spain, Greece and (increasingly) France. But a huge part of that is due to the fact the Jewish community here is negligible. But it is a growing community, the census if updated would probably have the Jewish population now between 3-4000. The 2,700 figure is from 2016, its been growing relatively well since then. On Parnell square the other day I seen two people walk down the road with Kippahs, which only a few years ago would've been unheard of. So because of that, you are correct it needs to start being documented and challenged. The fact that Richard Boyd Barrett can make open comparisons to Israel and Nazi Germany without being disciplined in the dail is a disgrace and embarassment.

Given that Irish folk histories call them one of the lost tribes, the believers in which will point to DNA evidence of near east origin for the Celts, and that Ireland is historically very catholic, a Christian religion, which believes in a book which says that "Palestine" is not really called that at all, my reaction to the sudden uptick in anti-Israel/antisemitic sentiment among the Irish can be summed up in three words...
One is "What", can you guess the other two?

I grew up all my life in Ireland. The only time I heard 'Jews' mentioned among friends was if it was after they watched a Holocaust film and couldn't believe what happened. Most Irish people don't know or think about Jews. The state of Israel gets criticism because of how it treats Palestinians. Same as Ireland boycotted Apartheid South Africa. It wasn't anti white South Africa - it was anti their behaviour.

Yeah. It was always kind of weird knowing that I was probably the only Jewish person my friends knew but.... everyone was always very respectful of my traditions. My late grandfather really embraced representing Judaism and I gave a lot of tours of the old synagogue with him to school groups and tour groups. Unlike him I guess I didn't like the attention. I enjoy being just your average Jewish guy where I live now in Israel!

Totally understandable. Graham Norton as a Protestant in Cork said he often felt like an outsider because he wasn't Catholic. Leo Varadkar as a half Indian said he felt different to other Irish kids growing up. Some christian kid growing up in Israel probably feels the same in a classroom of all Jewish kids. It's never easy for anyone to be apart from the main group's religion or culture. @@DanielSRosehill

The one thing I will say about Richard Boyd Barrett, is that he woke me up to the reality of anti-semitism in Ireland. I agree with you though that he is dangerous, but hopefully most people are starting to see through his double standards. He and his fellow stragglers in the pro-china pro-russia lobby in the European Parliament, i.e Mick Wallace and Claire Daly seem a bit too eager to go on about Israel (or America) and little mealy mouthed when it comes to Putin, Asad, Xi etc.

I'll be completely outright with you that I am probably politically opposed to you when it comes to Israel and Palestine. I have been accused of being antisemitic because I am opposed to what the Israeli government is doing. I find that frustrating and often from my perspective it comes across as a red herring as they have no real answer to any points I might have raised. But my opinion of what the Israeli government is doing is not tied to Jewish people or even Israeli people. Jews exist outside of Israel and Israel is not reflective of Jewish people or the citizens of Israel. With that Jews themselves hold differing opinions on Israel and Zionism. Being an Irish person I am surrounded by a lot of people who hold the same views as me towards Israel and Palestine. When these conversations come up the word Jewish rarely comes into it. Maybe some will read into Israel as being coded for Jewish but as I said, hand on heard that is not the case for me.
I can't really comment on discrimination and antisemitism because while I am Irish (and from Cork) I am not Jewish so its not my place so say how prevalent it is in Ireland. I am sure it exists but I've never witnessed it as there are so few Jewish people in Ireland its never really come up if that makes sense. I didn't go to school with any Jewish people so I couldn't have seen any school yard bullying towards Jews. The only time I've heard negative Jewish stereotypes is from an Irish person is form someone who went off the deep end with conspiracy theories. Ironically Anti Muslim sentiment is far more prevalent in Ireland.
From my perspective I do find RBB et al strongly anti Israel and lacking nuance but I never thought them to be antisemitic. It's never really come into their politics. As far as I know, like myself they also don't deny the right of Israel to exist. I believe in Israels right to exist but I am in favor of the two state solution and a hell of a lot of compromise. Israel needs to end the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank. It seems to me the Israeli government has no interest in any of that. As long as this current situation continues its going to perpetuate terrorism and there will be no end to decades long conflict in the region.

Thats why i was hoping you could convience some of the irish jews go together and report some of the hate speech that has happened to the gardai at least. Or maybe go to the papers to get their side of the story out. Especially after what happened at the UCD debate to jewish students.

Daniel, I've never written a comment to a video on youtube. This is going to be my first comment. I don't plan to make it a habit. I only mention it because I'm deeply shocked by your words. I understand you align yourself on the political left, and that's your choice to make. And I understand that there is a certain ideological approach that you follow, regardless of the facts. But I am deeply saddened by your statement on the existence of anti-Irish sentiments in Israel to the extent that you even refer to such sentiments casually as racism, and equate these supposed feelings to the obvious institutional antisemitism and anti-Israel rhetoric in Ireland. If there are any anti-Irish sentiments in modern Israel, these are the direct result of the Irish mobs in both Ireland and the UK chanting 'Gas the Jews' on Oct. 7 and Oct. 8. These war cries were captured on video, and available for everyone to watch on youtube. They reveal the true sentiments of the vocal majority of Irish Catholics, whose hatred and bigotry towards Jews goes back centuries. I realize that I'm not going to change your political leanings, but I do think you should be more decent and fair in your coverage and analysis. Please, do try to avoid confusing cause and effect. I've lived in Israel for over 40 years, and I have yet to meet a single person with anti-Irish sentiments. The same cannot be said of the Irish towards Jews in general, and Israel in particular.

I must say I disagree Daniel. As someone who is ethnically Jewish, born in Israel but lived in Ireland all my life, I can say that in my experience the majority of Irish people are antisemitic. It ranges from low level bias (thinking Jews are rather unfortunate or pitiable), to the 'throw them in the gas chambers' tropes, though much more the former than the latter. My father when he lived here in the 80s and 90s, pretended he was Italian, and rarely felt comfortable to let people know he was Israeli. Something he would never have found an issue with if he lived in Britain or the US. You hit the nail on the head when you said antisemitism goes unchallenged in Ireland. Indifference is as damaging as hate. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

@@DanielSRosehill Sorry, I know this is resurrecting an old thread but it struck me because I was trying to find a different video and this came up. I think one of the biggest problems in Ireland is we aren't exposed enough to pro Israel positions. As someone who was once a huge Israel hater, if I as a person wasn't so naturally curious and willing to learn new perspectices I wouldn't have come across any pro Israel material. But that's just me. I can understand why you wouldn't want to admit you live in Israel, but knowing Irish people (which I'm sure you do but maybe living abroad has you a bit less immediately aware) we are far more bark than bite. I think (and not targetting you induvidually) it's important for Irish jews to start being more outspoken. I have tried showing support as much as I can, but of course as a non jewish person it's only going to go so far. People quickly assume I am a west brit or a far right anti muslim racist.

although from coming from good place, Ireland is a bit different than other nations, its more a pro Palestinian atmosphere coming from sympathy for them and the underdog than anti Israel let alone anti jewish. also if you studied PR and that if you actually proved Ireland was antisemitic whatever that means, is that a proof that is good for Israel ? if a great modern peace loving country like ireland is antisematetic that is a bit of problem for Israel. The Israeli embassy traditionally has just had this policy and it's wise. If I were to focus on something it would be the media, Irish times and independent are very biased against Israel and I would call them out as manipulators not Irish people.

I have to say I think you're very blessed. Being both Irish and Jewish. Two beautiful cultures 😊
Re the current conflict, I'm just pro human and pro peace. It's a desperately sad situation. I feel very sorry for both innocent Jews and Arabs (and innocent anyone else) and I just want everyone to live and thrive, be harmless and be unharmed. Both groups have suffered collective trauma 😢. I condemn Hamas utterly, and also utterly condemn Netanyahu and the far-right crazies in the Israeli government. I separate those things from ordinary Palestinians and ordinary Israelis and Jews.
I've commented on your channel before. I've got an Irish protestant background, and my family always felt a kinship with Irish Jewry. Two Irish minorities. Fortunately Ireland has moved on, and everyone is just Irish now. People are far less fussed about religious affiliation.
Anyway, you take care. I'm sending love to all Jews and all Arabs in the region. You equally deserve peace and happiness. You're human beings and equal souls before all else. Lots of love x

You as an Irishman should know the difference between being "anti-foreign policy" of a country and being anti-that people. In all my life living in Ireland I have never heard, ever, anti-Jewish sentiments. During the Gulf wars, there was anti-US foreign policy, but no one ever thought that as anti-US, because Ireland will never be anti-US. One thing is nothing to do with the other.

Zionists committed a hostile takeover of the land of the Canaanites since 1910(Just like us White guys in North America had authorization to take over Indigenous territory here or Normans making themselves lords of Ireland).
