Now that Norway, Spain and the Republic of Ireland have officially recognised Palestine as a state, I'm curious what the morale of the Jewish community is in those three countries. It must make it difficult for Jewish people there to deal with government institutions, not knowing whether they'll be treated fairly or not.

XF100 was my favorite camera. Just so darn compact and useful. Don’t like the combination cameras they made, where they crammed the XF100/205 into the XA series. Removing the viewfinder from the top handle is a major reason I don’t like them. Have an XF605 now, it’s great, but honestly I’m considering buying a now 13 year old XF100 for when I need a camera I can shove in a backpack. If they put the XF605 sensor in the XF105 body, and also the XF205 body, I’d buy both. The XA70 and XA60 are not cameras I will buy.

The Afro-Asiatic language family is one of the largest language families in the world, encompassing a diverse group of languages spoken primarily in Africa and Southwest Asia (also known as the Middle East). This language family is named for its two major branches: the African branch (or "Afro-") and the Asiatic branch (or "-Asiatic"). ### Characteristics of Afro-Asiatic Languages: 1. **Geographic Distribution:** Afro-Asiatic languages are spoken across a vast area stretching from the Horn of Africa in the east to the Maghreb region of North Africa in the west, as well as parts of the Middle East and the Sahel region of West Africa. 2. **Diversity:** The Afro-Asiatic language family is highly diverse, with over 300 individual languages belonging to various subgroups. 3. **Classification:** Afro-Asiatic languages are divided into several major branches or subfamilies, including: - **Semitic:** Includes languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, Amharic (spoken in Ethiopia), and Tigrinya (spoken in Eritrea and Ethiopia). - **Berber:** Spoken primarily in North Africa, including languages like Tamazight and Kabyle. - **Chadic:** Spoken mainly in the Chad Basin and parts of Nigeria, including Hausa. - **Cushitic:** Spoken in the Horn of Africa and parts of East Africa, including languages such as Somali, Oromo, and Afar. - **Egyptian:** Ancient Egyptian, now extinct, is a well-known member of this branch. - **Omotic:** Spoken in southwestern Ethiopia, including languages like Wolaytta and Gamo. 4. **Genetic Relationships:** While the exact relationships between the different branches of Afro-Asiatic languages are still debated among linguists, there is evidence to suggest a common origin for these languages, likely in the region of Northeast Africa or the Near East. 5. **Features:** Afro-Asiatic languages share certain linguistic features, such as consonantal roots, grammatical gender, and a system of triconsonantal roots that form the basis of many words. 6. **Historical Significance:** Some Afro-Asiatic languages, such as Ancient Egyptian, have played significant roles in the development of human civilization, particularly in the realms of literature, religion, and scholarship. Overall, the Afro-Asiatic language family is characterized by its linguistic diversity and geographic spread, encompassing languages spoken across vast regions of Africa and Southwest Asia.

The term "Semite" historically refers to a member of any of the peoples who speak or spoke a Semitic language, including Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, Amharic, and others. The Semitic languages belong to the Afro-Asiatic language family and are primarily spoken in the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of East Africa. More broadly, "Semite" can also refer to a member of any ethnic or cultural group descended from the ancient Semitic-speaking peoples of the ancient Near East, including Jews, Arabs, Assyrians, and others. In contemporary usage, the term "Semite" is often associated with anti-Semitism, which specifically targets Jews, despite the broader meaning of the term encompassing a range of ethnic and cultural groups. However, it's important to recognize that historically and linguistically, "Semite" refers to a diverse group of peoples who share linguistic and cultural connections in the ancient Near East.

More from Chat Gpt : The variation in facial features and skin color among different Jewish communities is primarily a result of historical migrations, intermarriage, and adaptation to different environments over thousands of years. Here’s a more detailed explanation: Historical Migrations and Diaspora 1. **Middle Eastern Origins:** The ancient Israelites were originally a Semitic people from the Middle East. Historically, people from this region have typically had olive to darker skin tones, with a range of hair textures and facial features. 2. **Diaspora and Local Intermarriage:** As Jews dispersed throughout the world due to various exiles and migrations (Babylonian exile, Roman conquest, etc.), they settled in different regions, including Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Over time, Jewish communities intermarried with local populations, which influenced their physical appearance. Genetic Admixture 1. **European Jews (Ashkenazi and Sephardi):** Ashkenazi Jews settled in Central and Eastern Europe, while Sephardi Jews lived in Spain, Portugal, and later in parts of North Africa and the Ottoman Empire. Both groups experienced genetic admixture with local European and Mediterranean populations, leading to lighter skin tones and other European physical characteristics. 2. **Middle Eastern and North African Jews (Mizrahi):** Mizrahi Jews remained in the Middle East and North Africa. They have a wider range of skin tones, typically darker than Ashkenazi Jews, due to their continuous presence in regions with less genetic admixture from European populations. 3. **Ethiopian Jews (Beta Israel):** Ethiopian Jews have darker skin and features typical of East African populations. Their long-term isolation and limited genetic admixture with other Jewish communities preserved these traits. 4. **Lemba Tribe:** The Lemba people in Southern Africa also have physical characteristics typical of the region’s populations. Genetic studies indicate some Middle Eastern ancestry, but their appearance reflects significant local admixture. Adaptation to Environment 1. **Climate and Environment:** Over centuries, human populations adapt to their local environments. Skin color, for example, is influenced by the need for protection against ultraviolet radiation. In sunnier climates, darker skin offers protection against UV rays, while lighter skin is advantageous in regions with less sunlight to synthesize vitamin D more efficiently. Cultural and Social Factors 1. **Marriage Patterns:** Cultural practices and social structures, such as endogamy (marrying within the community), can maintain specific genetic traits within a group. However, when Jews lived among other populations for extended periods, there was often some level of intermarriage or conversion, leading to genetic diversity. Summary The differences in facial features and skin color among various Jewish groups are the result of a combination of historical migrations, genetic admixture with local populations, and adaptations to different environments. Despite these physical differences, Jewish identity has been maintained through cultural, religious, and communal ties, demonstrating the resilience and adaptability of the Jewish people throughout history.

I asked chatgpt 4.o and got this : The question of whether the Khazars converted to Judaism has been a topic of scholarly debate for many years. The Khazars were a semi-nomadic Turkic people who established a major commercial empire covering the southeastern section of modern European Russia, western Kazakhstan, eastern Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and parts of the Caucasus from the 7th to the 10th century. Historical Background **Primary Sources and Accounts:** 1. **Jewish Accounts:** Several Jewish sources, such as the writings of the Spanish Jewish scholar Hasdai ibn Shaprut and the Cairo Geniza documents, refer to a conversion of the Khazar ruling elite to Judaism. Hasdai ibn Shaprut's letter to the Khazar king Joseph and the latter's reply mention the conversion. 2. **Muslim Accounts:** Muslim sources, including the works of Al-Masudi and Ibn al-Faqih, also discuss the Khazars’ conversion to Judaism, although these accounts often blend history with legend. 3. **Christian Accounts:** Byzantine sources, such as the writings of Constantine VII, also mention the conversion, indicating the significant interaction between the Khazar Khaganate and the Byzantine Empire. The Nature of the Conversion **Elite vs. Mass Conversion:** - **Elite Conversion:** Most scholars agree that the conversion to Judaism primarily involved the Khazar ruling class, including the Khagan and the nobility, rather than the entire population. This conversion likely took place in the late 8th or early 9th century. - **Extent of the Conversion:** There is less consensus on the extent to which the general Khazar population adopted Judaism. Some evidence suggests that while the elite may have converted for political or economic reasons, the majority of the population remained pagan, Christian, or Muslim. Motivations for Conversion 1. **Political Motives:** Aligning with Judaism allowed the Khazars to maintain political neutrality between the Christian Byzantine Empire and the Muslim Caliphate, both of which were regional superpowers at the time. 2. **Economic Benefits:** The Khazar Empire controlled crucial trade routes between Europe and Asia, and converting to Judaism could have facilitated trade with Jewish merchants and communities. 3. **Cultural Influence:** Jewish traders, settlers, and emissaries might have influenced the Khazar elite through cultural and religious interactions. Evidence and Archaeology **Archaeological Findings:** - Limited archaeological evidence specifically points to a widespread Jewish presence among the Khazars. Items such as Jewish artifacts and inscriptions have been found, but these are not extensive enough to confirm a large-scale conversion. **Genetic Studies:** - Genetic research has not provided conclusive evidence supporting a mass conversion of the Khazar population to Judaism. Most genetic studies of modern Jewish populations do not show a significant Khazar contribution. Conclusion While there is substantial evidence supporting the conversion of the Khazar ruling elite to Judaism, the extent of this conversion among the general population remains uncertain. The motivations for conversion appear to be multifaceted, involving political, economic, and cultural factors. Overall, the historical narrative of the Khazar conversion to Judaism remains a complex and somewhat ambiguous chapter in the history of the medieval Eurasian steppes.
