Brickle ~ My husband's favorite Christmas candy.

- BRICKLE
Approximately 35 to 40 Saltines
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp almond or vanilla flavoring
2 cups chocolate chips (semi or milk chocolate)
pecans (optional)
Preheat oven to 400°
cover a cookie sheet with tin foils and spray. Line cookie sheet with crackers salt side up.
In a sauce pan boil butter and sugar for 2 - 3 minutes stirring constantly. add in flavoring and pour over crackers. place in oven for 5 minutes. cover with chocolate chips and let sit for 30 sec to 1 minute. spread melted chocolate and sprinkle with nuts. place in a cool place to harden. once harden break up into small pieces and enjoy.

I am 72 and I can tell you if you ever cook with a gas stove you’ll never want a electric stove again. You turn it on and it’s on you turn it off and it’s off. You control the heat. A must for a serious cook.
I’m 76 and I AGREE too!!! I have a gas stove and oven...THE BEST!!! 💕
And if the power goes out, you can still cook..😊 💜 😁 🙋

If you save your butter wrappers, instead of throwing them away, you can use them to butter your baking dishes prior to using them. You can also freeze them until you need them.

They also make good liners for round cake pans.

I have made this candy for many years! I clipped it out of the newspaper in the 80's, it was a Girl Scout recipe called Soda Cracker Toffee. Everyone who has ever eaten it wants the recipe.
I total agree stove top should be gas. You can can can on gas because it gets hotter. Electric will kick off so 😢yes gas cook top. Electric oven is okay. I enjoyed your show. I needed a simple recipe for yeast rolls. So thank you. You save my part of Thanksgiving. 2022

My niece invited me to go with her to a fish fry her best friend was having. I went, so I basically crashed the party. I took a double batch of this as my contribution. It was all eaten....the kids loved it. When I left I thanked her and apologized for crashing the party. The hostess said ''come anytime, as long as you bring some more of that delicious stuff.

Every year my friend's daughter would buy up all the plain chocolate Easter candy that was been sold half price. She would store them in the freezer. She also collected all her friends' Christmas cards which they were just going to recycle. Then about a month before Christmas she would make the brickle. She would make little boxes the size of a deck of cards and fill it with the candy and sell it for 50 cents. That is how she got her extra money for Christmas. At the time (this was about ten years ago) I worked in a big office and I would bring in bags and bags of these boxes and sell them for her. Even after she lost her sight and was unable to bake or cook anymore coworkers would ask if I would be selling the brickle again. A lovely memory now that I am in lockdown because of Covid and starting to do some candy making. Thanks for posting this and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
I’m 71, and over the years, I have had the fun of using either type of stove! I do prefer a gas stove, which is what I have in my home currently. Thanks for the Brickle recipe!! My Mom used to make this when us kids were little! Good memories, and YUMMY! 💕
Gas top parts can go into the dishwasher! They come out pristine.

Invent a gas stove with an electric oven. Gas ovens are just to hot for the south. But, definitely has tops all the way!

I remember my mom making this when we were young. Yum! I have had both gas and electric appliances. I prefer the gas over electric because I feel I can regulate my stove top easier.
Brickle is definitely our favorite candy~ has always bothered me to make a joke out of drug terms, my kids think it's silly, but seriously, our language is so important!
My absolute favorite way to make it is with regular saltines, chopped, toasted pecans & white chocolate~ SO good! I've made it w/Ritz, Club crackers, & every manner of chocolate & nuts. They are all good, yet my favorite gets made most.
*Oh- also, I put salted side down, that way when you take a bite, you get the salty taste on your tongue, along w/the sweet of the rest~ delicious!

I love my gas stove. I can’t cook on electric stoves -I burn everything. Gas is a more consistent heat and when the power goes out you can still cook

I have had both. I prefer gas. So much easier to adjust the burners/flames quickly. Brickle is one of my absolute Christmas favorites!

I make these all the time. They're so versatile. I use a 15x10 jelly roll pan and one sleeve of saltines fits in the pan perfectly. My family prefers salt side down so in every bite you really get the salty with the sweet. For the holidays I use white chocolate, dried cherries, and chopped pistachios. At other times I use a bag of milk chocolate chips and a bag of heath toffee bits with milk chocolate for crunch for people who like the crunch but don't like nuts. I also do a peanut butter version with semi-sweet chocolate chips. My family loves this stuff. Thank you for the video. Always love to see other recipe ideas.

I love cooking on a gas cooktop. You can still cook when the power goes out!
I can’t use my gas stove when the power goes out. The newer models have an electric ignition and so even if you are using it when the power goes, my stove shuts down. So sad, many years ago I could at least heat part of the home using my gas stove/oven.

This is the first time I have seen your presentation and loved it. I have been wanting to know how to make Brickle for the longest time and thank you ever so much for sharing this with us.
I make a baked bean casorel, and take to our church potluck events.. I've watched people get red solo cups and fill them up ,to take home!
Very easy!
I'll list the smaller batch, and you can double it as much as you need.
2lbs of cooked ground chuck(drain the greese)
1 small Chopped onion
2tbs.munced garlic
Combine all ingredients in a large crock pot
I use my largest crock
pot.
2 or 3 tall cans of Bush's baked beans any flavor
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup Sweet Baby Ray's bar b queen sauce, any flavor
1 bag of real bacon bits.
Stir well
Add 1 package of little Smokies.
Stir well.
If someone tries to sneak a bite of little smokies, smack their hands!!!!
Simmer on low for as long as you think it needs.
Enjoy!!!

I grew up with a gas stove and learned to cook on that. After our house burned my senior year my parents went all-electric and we had to learn how to cook with an electric stove. Mama never changed back, but when I married my husband and I had a gas stove and I was so glad. I never really liked an electric stove, and when we have had ice storms we could at least cook if our power was off. (It also helps heat the house some in that case.) I'm sorry you were sick. So glad you're so much better. I'm going to have to make this!

Stove top is a must! When you have gas you will never go back to electric. Had both and love gas. You are right about being able to still cook when power goes out. Living in south Louisiana with hurricanes( 4 this year) it’s a must!
I made this for the first time ever today. Well, I made it twice today because the first time I burned the sugar in the oven lol. The second time everything turned out perfect. My husband and I love this!

I switched from electric to gas and LOVE it! It did have a short learning curve because it heats up so fast, but you learn quickly. And I LOVE my gas oven! I got the gas oven with the convection feature and use it ALL the time. So much quicker and things cook so evenly even with multiple pans due to the fan circulating the heat. You won't regret the change. The only negative is the heating up the kitchen in the summer. But, we just got a microwave with a browning & convection feature so I'm hoping that takes care of that in the summer.

Yes, I hope she is better too! This was a video from 2019! This is the yummiest cookie ever! I do mine a little differently (posted a minute ago). It uses the oven to brown and bubble instead of on the stovetop, but the results are similar.
I've always used a gas stove and loved it. When I moved into my house 21 years ago it had a gas cook top and an electric wall oven. Surprisingly I like the way the electric oven cooks.

I had a gas stove when I was living in Jersey and I absolutely loved it because if the electric goes out you can still cook on your stove all you need is a lighter to light it

I used to make this every holiday season for my mom's quilt guild. I would break up a candy cane and sprinkle it across the top after spreading the chocolate chips and before it cooled. Can use Andes mints too. Mint is always a good change for Christmas. Dad had me use orange chocolate once for a change of pace and it was decadent. Yum
I switched from electric to gas about 7 yr.s ago and LOVE It! And I LOVE the gas oven which I can choose regular bake or convection bake. When you're having lots of dishes, put on convection and the air circulates around and helps several dishes cook evenly and quicker.

I watched a lady make this recipe, the first time she made it. She did it perfectly, caramel all the way to edges. This lady is NOT worried about doing a good job.

I’ve had both gas and electric and I tell you I take gas any time over electric, gas is wonderful, once you’ve had gas you don’t want to go back to electric.
There are advantages to gas. If you lose power you can still cook. And technically you are not supposed to can on a glass top electric stove. But the old eye burner you can. On the other hand I always worried the pilot light would go out and we would all die in our sleep or a gas explosion takes my house and neighborhood out in a massive explosion. 😏Just sayin.
@@floridagirl330 newer gas stoves don’t have pilot lights. The gas is off until the knob is turned.
IMO, gas is superior. I haven’t been able to make my famous fried potatoes half as good on a electric. Control just helps everything turn out better.
I don’t have the hook-up for gas stove at my house, it would be expensive for me to have done.

I prefer a gas stovetop, I have found gas cooks far more evenly and it is much easier to control the heat...
gas is good when elec goes out.. may need a match because the elec pilot on mine is dead without elec. i use elec skillet so go GAS.

I’ve had electric stoves all my life, and just did a total home remodel. I have a gas stove (and gas oven) now. I love my gas stove!

An induction cooktop is a marvel to cook with since it is so responsive. I have had one for forty years and enjoy it immensely. As a little parlour trick I put an ice cube in a pan, turn the burner on high and PRESTO the cube goes to boiling in about a minute. Then take the pan off the burner and you can put the palm of your hand on the burner. The pan is hot, not the burner. Induction is well worth it.
Many years ago, before I knew I had Celiac, I made something very similar to this. When I ran my own business, I used to make goodies for all the people I worked for, and everyone said this was their favorite out of all.
First, I laid the crackers down, like you did. Then melted the butter and sugar, but did not boil and thicken, then added vanilla when off the stove, and poured the thin mixture over the crackers. Because it was very thin, it spread out on its own and saved one step. The boiling part was done in the oven 325(?), for about 30-40 minutes. When I took it out, like you, I sprinkled the choc chips and spread them out when melted. I might have to make some gluten free crackers and try this again. It looks sooo good!

I also use coconut sugar to cut down on the glycemic load a little bit.
I have celiac as well.. found out when I was 36 years old… I make a lot of stuff like this with m6 own gluten free recipes for the crackers or breads or pie crusts etc… most of the time people can’t tell the difference….

OMGosh ... what a delicious and fairly straightforward looking recipe/treat. I'm doing this one for sure! I don't eat much chocolate (migraines) but my husband has a large sweet-tooth molar in his mouth and I know he'd love this treat for sure.
Go gas for stove top. Started out as newly wed (49 years ago) with gas then went to electric. I burned everything! You can control gas so much better, doesn’t get too hot and stays hot too long. Go gas!

Ok, I maker a few pans of brickle a season, I put toffee chips, Carmel balls, mini m&m’s, and fun stuff on it with the nuts.

@@sassypants5716 It already tastes like a heath bar, if you use graham crackers it turns out thicker like heath-saltines make it thinner like a skore bar..both are delicious😌 I have a different cracker in mind to experiment with next time, I couldn't find them at my local Wal-Mart, too close to Christmas I guess, but I will absolutely let everyone know how they turn out (if they're good). I personally think that this will top the charts for cracker toffee!!
