- Weird History Food is discussing the Big Mac. Everyone's favorite burger at McDonald's, the Big Mac is probably the most iconic-looking sandwich out there. We're going to take a look back at Mac's early origins, its surprising tie-in to Bob's Big Boy, and where the Big Mac stands today. I'm 57 years old ( but I read on a 58 year old level), and I remember when I was about nine or ten years old that the McDonald's around here ran a promotion where if you could walk up to the counter and say the "Two all beef patties..." jingle in five seconds, you would get the burger for free.
I have always been fairly ambivalent about the burger, but I have always been a huge fan of free food. I trained myself to recite the jingle in three seconds back in the day, and even today with my advanced age (and reading ability), I can do it in about four seconds.
That was a fantastic marketing campaign.

57, reading at a 58 level. Ahead of the curve. I remember a jingle from the past but only the way we made fun of it. We used to sing, Grab a bucket of snot, brush the bottom and top, the rest kind of fades away but even back then we knew rotten ronnies was just that. I do miss the Flintstones, Here we come on the run, with a burger on a bun and a slice of dill pickle on the side.

Interesting fact: For several years around 2010, the Big Mac was nowhere to be seen in ads or the overhead menus of Argentinian McDonalds.
If you checked the small menus in the walls to the side, you would find it there prized way, way cheaper than similarly sized combos. It was speculated that this was an agreement with Guillermo Moreno, the then commerce secretary, to modify how Argentina was ranked in the big mac index.
This has been denied by McDonalds, but there is no clear explanation about why the big mac was hidden from the public or priced that cheap. As a person that grew there during that decade, it came to a surprise to me to learn that it was supposedly the flagship product of the brand.

@@kewl851 Remember the part of the video where it talks about the "Big Mac Index"? This index classifies countries' buying power by how expensive their big macs are.
Argentina has a long history of trying to hide inflation, and during that decade "for some reason" the big mac was half the price of everything else and absolutely hidden from public view.
Hence it is speculated that the government paid Mcdonalds to reduce the price of the big mac so that we would be better positioned in the big mac index.
I love that the McDonald’s app will let you double the amount of meat on your Big Mac but can’t tell you if the ice cream machine is working.

That's because the ice cream machines are literally designed to """"break down"""" so mcdonalds has to pay the company to send a maintenance worker.
It's proven the "errors" the machines give out are all bs.
Tells me fine. The issue is when people order and rock up two hours later when the machine has gone into cleaning mode.
I love that you can't add Mac sauce to anything else on the app. That's the only good part, but can't order mcdoubles with it on the app.

When I crave two razor thin patties and a pound of bread accompanied by a flavorless mess of lettuce and onions that are more in the box than on the burger, I grab 8 dollars and run to McDonald’s.

Big Mac sauce includes: mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish and yellow mustard whisked together with vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika. However, around 2018/2019 McDonald's revamped the sauce by removing potassium, sodium and calicum.
So in other words, they made it taste worse.
And made it less healthy by taking out the minerals, probably to save money.
It's just sandwich spread.
I wouldn't care if it has ranch dressing on it.... it's still a great sandwich 🥪

I think the Big Mac is pretty solid. However the patties seem a little too small these days for the amount of bread / other ingredients. If they had a patty that was sized in-between their normal cheese burgers (Which is used on the Big Mac) and their Quarter Pounder then I would think it would be more balanced and sell more units.
It definitely needs bigger beef patties they shrink every other year it seems.

@@Jmanrolla Your best bet is to check out "The Aristocrats," a documentary about the joke. I doubt anyone will tell it in the CZcams comments because of the length and subject matter. The person telling the joke needs to get very excessive with both to tell it properly because the set-up is funnier than the punchline.
The big mac now doesnt taste the same as it did in the 80's - 90's, it's expensive, AND it's 1/2 the size it once was. It used to be so big if you made it through the whole thing, you were full. Now I could eat 2, and still want nuggets, fries, and a few cheese burgers. It all used to be so much better than it is now, so I rarely ever eat there.
You're nuts. The Big Mac was always made with 2 1.6 oz patties. QPC is 4 oz.. Your small child hands made it seem bigger back in the day.

Being a kid in the 60s, I remember when the Big Mac was Introduced. Back then it was a treat to pile into the station wagon and go to McDonald's, Arby's, or A&W.

Big Mac was my favorite McDonalds non breakfast item as a teen. McDonald's was my first job in high school.

Most of the seniors at my school went to McDonald's to eat lunch and I got stuck eating the school lunches which was fine by me
It isn't though. For one thing a double cheeseburger has ketchup AND mustard, for another you can't request no cheese on a double cheeseburger without sounding ridiculous.
Usually there is too much sauce, wet lettuce, stale buns, cold meat, nasty old pickles, and too many onions. But made properly, a Big Mac is magic.
I work at McDonald's and i see people all too often but excess sauce and lettuce on things. Really annoying! But they want you to make it quickly

Oh, I remember well my disappointment when as a kid I had my first McD's hamburger. This was in the 70s, when the patties were as thin as sheets of paper. I swear, it was 70% bun and condiments, 30% meat. In fact, that's what led to the famous "Where's the beef?" Wendy's commercials of the 80s.
My first visit to McDonald’s was a Big Mac, fries and Strawberry milkshake. That was almost 50 years ago.
When my family and I last traveled to China in 2006, my dad tried the Mega Mac at a McDonald's in Hangzhou. At the time, the Mega Mac had four meat patties: two in between the middle bun and the top bun and two in between the middle bun and the bottom bun. When my dad had a taste of the Mega Mac, he thought that at the time, Big Mac in America tasted better.
Me, today, because McDonald's isn't exactly high-quality food where I live currently (Memphis, TN, that is), I haven't had a Big Mac in goodness who knows how long. Plus, I tested positive for borderline pre-diabetes recently so on top of watching out for sugary stuff, I have to keep an eye on what types of grains that I can put inside of me. Sandwiches like Big Macs are only for special occasions for me.

I remember the packaging was a cardboard sleeve around the burger to keep it together and then wrapped in thin foil wrapper. Cost was 65 cents in Canada. That was around 1970.
Yep, that was the true original wrapping. I remember my first Big Mac. My Uncle bribed me he would buy me one if I walked from my bed to the corner chair. I was 11 years old and had a broken keg lol

When I was a kid and I'd walk home from school. The corner McDonald's had only hamburger, cheeseburger, fish and fries. Along with the usual drinks. On Fridays, usually, I got a burger, fries and a coke for 60¢. But that was in 1966. And I still had money to get a comic book and 2 candy bars out of the dollar. I blew my 45¢ for a Big Mac when it first came out. Better to get two hamburgers and have a nickel for something else. LoL. My Dad taught me the value of dollars at an early age. A few years ago Mc Donald's l ordered a big mac meal with bacon cost me $ 10.42 !! So from then on I go to the grocery store and buy 8 frozen beef patties thousand island shredded lettuce cheese pickles onion and sesame seed buns I get 8 single patty big macs for $20.00

That was so interesting and fascinating! I used to get the Big Mac a lot when I was younger, but now that I'm older and have health problems, I can only just dream about it LOL my dad worked at McDonald's in the 60s in Los Angeles and he used to put two hamburgers together with just two buns on his lunch break until coworkers noticed it and thought it would make a good sandwich that's how they started making the double cheeseburger in their location which is now the mcdouble. I don't know if my dad had anything to do with that overall, but I like thinking my dad came up with something new on the menu at McDonald's just because he wanted something different. It's fun to create your own ideas like that!
The Burger is a trip in memory lane for me. Childhood memories of my dad talking me in a two hour drive to the closest McD in my area.

I have a Big Mac once a year, just to see if I like it or not. I'm usually underwhelmed. I prefer 5 guys or Culver's for takeout burgers, or homemade. Although to be fair the pickle/onion/sauce combo is pretty good.
Back in the day the Big Mac blew those burgers out of the water, now it's just plain average compared to other burgers.
That's my philosophy with White Castle. I eat there once a year to remind myself why I only eat there once per year...
Of course Five Guys and Culver's are better... they cost two to three times more than a Big Mac

45 cents in 1967 was 3.44 in 2019 or 4.02 in 2022. Today, Big Macs are 4 dollars AFAIK so it's basically the same price as back then. BUT It's probably made more cost efficiently somehow and with shrinkflation.
Lol Big Mac is 5.19 for just a sandwich, location prices vary too, so it could be $2-3 more than that. McDonald's is no longer affordable compared to other fast food

Seeing all of these prices of older restaurants just makes me realize how coins and change are basically not even used anymore.

What makes the Big Mac so good is the special sauce. So glad that you can just buy 'burger sauce' from the supermarket now which is exactly the same and make yourself an even better burger at home.
Ridiculous. Can't you make your own Big Mac sauce for a fraction of the price? There are hundreds of recipies for it on Internet. I found mine... and it's way better than McDonald's.

You can order a double cheeseburger with only big mac sauce. (Junior Big Mac?) sometimes you must pay extra made that way Since they have to make it special, it actually comes out hot, no like the pre-made burgers. No longer “fast”food.

I had the pleasure of going to a Big Boy before it went under in my home town. Such a classic fast food establishment that more people should have been a part of these days. Socializing without cellphones. Not complaining about food,, serving size or prices. Times have changed along with corporate greed. How sad.
You didn't mention the MacCoin promotion for the 50th anniversary. McDonalds release a set of 5 coins (brass tokens), one for each decade of the sandwich's history. You got one every time you bought a Big Mac, and could redeem it for a big mac.
But they're worth more in their original package than a Big Mac is today. I have my full set of 5, lol...
(Edit: Yeah, I ate a few Big Mac's to get the tokens. Not my favorite sandwich... 😁)

When I was in grade school in WYO it was 80 miles to the closest McDonald’s and was a real treat. I could sing the song backwards and forwards.

Great video! You glossed over an important part of the story though...How was Delligatti allowed to sell a custom made sandwich to his customers, in the first place? McDonalds had super strict guidelines for franchisees to ensure the menu was consistent in all restaurants. Did he need approval from Ray Kroc before selling it to his customers? Surely he wasn't allowed to go rogue? Other franchisees would have done the same otherwise...
This is a more recent development than you think...
Dutch mc donalds for quite some time sold pea soup and chicken legs... Some hold on to those original franchise agreements and sold weird things till the noughts
They were recognisable because old franchisecontract holders hold on to ronald mc Donald and interiors way long than others..

I would like a doc on taco stands/trucks. I love going to taco trucks and have all my life. I honestly think they are the most delicious thing for the price and need more recognition for feeding my part of America.

I really like the Big Mac, but I am able to consistently get a BOGO free offer from the McDonalds app on my phone. The cost of a single Big Mac now is kind of ridiculous frankly. But being able to get two for that price, that's pretty good. I have made the Big Mac sauce many times and I can get it to taste pretty much exactly like the McDonalds version.
Ive always been more of a quarter pounder guy, but I do enjoy that sauce.

When I Worked at McDonald's from 1982-1984 I Really Loved the Big Mac! Now it is just two Small patties on Dry Buns!
You can actually order the McKinley Mac anywhere for like 3 bucks extra, which is a great deal.
I dont know about others but the addition of shredded lettuce in the big mac helps balance it with the abundance of condiments/dressing and the juicy patties inside that burger
Strangely enough, I recently tried a Bic Mac for the first time in my life, and after removing the pickles it was a surprisingly good fast food burger.

Yanno, while I love pickles to death personally, I feel there should be a push to have unpickled cukes as an option. I feel like those are equally valid and if anything, crunchier for people who want a burger with more bite.

He created the Big Mac to compete with the Big Boy burger sold at the other popular Pittsburgh area restaurant called Eat 'N Park. He also created the Egg McMuffin and the hot cakes and sausage breakfast item.
Eatnpark did have a double decker sandwich. However, the Bob's Big Boy was only at Bob's Big Boy restaurants.
We visited this Big Mac museum when we moved up to Pennsylvania a couple years ago it wasn't really worth the two hour drive but let's whatever LOL
I personally like the Whopper because BK has more veggies in it and less sauce - that helps keep the patties in the bun.
