- Take a trip with Weird History Food, to the very germ of an idea that was breakfast sandwhiches. Though we have all lost count of exactly how many delectable Egg McMuffins we have all consumed, is hard to imagine a world in which Egg McMuffins just did not exist. How did they even come about? What brilliance created this morning mainstay?
Grab yourself a McMuffin or two, and scarf down this video treat - its available ALL Day, every Day!

Same. Currently eating one now before work 😆
I second the nomination.
Couldn’t go to McDonald’s before school growing up, it was way out of our way. Mom bought English muffins, Canadian bacon, and fried an egg with a Kraft American cheese single. Tasted perfect!
That probably tasted better than McDonald’s anyway.

Right on mom! That’s love right there!
So what you're trying to say is that your mom bought groceries?
I live in Baja Mexico. Every time I drive down after visiting the states I make sure to carry home a sack of sausage cheese Mcmuffins and put them in the freezer. When you thaw them out and reheat them in the microwave, they are JUST as good. It's a massive treat!
Do they not have them farther south? They have Mc Donald's in Tijuana.
you're insane.
I actually worked at the original location where Herb developed the Egg McMuffin, the Goleta store off of Fairview.
According to my boss, Herb while he was inspired by the early morning foot traffic on the State Street, he did a lot of the experimenting at the Goleta location.
I worked there the summer of 2016 while they gutted the 90's interior and replaced it with a shrine to the egg McMuffin and Herb, including the original prototype egg ring behind a bulletproof glass box. At the same time David Peterson actually was going through a nasty divorce and sold off all but two (according to my boss) of his location,Golata Fairview and Goleta Storke Rd) to another Franchisee from Carpinteria including the coveted State Street location, which is shame because the employee orientation room behind the State Street location is bedecked with awards and historical memorabilia.
I've only met David in passing a couple of times as an employee (the franchise office is literally a little house next to the Fairview location).
If you're ever in the Goleta area for breakfast go to the Fairview location and go inside and look at the giant mural of Herb on the wall while you eat your McMuffin its a interesting experience.
I lived there from 94-2000 while in graduate school at UCSB! I sure miss it!
Unfortunately, no McDonald's around me has done All-Day Breakfast since mid-covid. Which is unfortunate.
I also miss all-day breakfast, but it doesn't really matter anymore anyways, as I can't really afford to eat at McDonald's since they raised their prices
that sucks. Mcdonalds in canada or in my province has been 24/7 breakfast for years. We love coffee and breakfast though lol. Mcdonalds coffee is different in Canada im told as well, its so good.
@@Ultimita01 Note to self: Drive up to Canada...
Seriously, if they still did it 24/7 here, it's all I would get. Especially since they made it to order, so it was always fresh. Well, as fresh as McDonald's can be, anyway
@@oraghallaigh4421 yeah its always fresh, thats why I eat breakfast there 24/7 lol. Mcdonalds in canada also has great coffee and bakery I am told compared to the american counterpart. I heard its the original tim hortons coffee and I believe it as tim hortons is beyond garbage these days.

Ah, the Mcmuffin~ Only Weird History Food would make me crave breakfast after I just ate lol. I'll have to plan a trip to McDonald's this weekend.
I would love to see a video about Mcgriddles and/or McDonald's breakfast menu.
I heard that they are $7 now at some places. All fast food prices are out of control.
I appreciate that one of the most iconic breakfast sandwiches of all time was created with the help of JULIA CHILD. And that started the fast food breakfast trend. History is so funny sometimes 😂
I still remember the very first one I ever had (it was the first time I'd ever tasted English muffin or Canadian bacon). It was 1974 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana... at the McDonalds at 4615 Perkins Road. That building has been replaced by a newer one in recent years, the internet tells me, but the location is the same. My maternal grandmother asked the manager what was in them and she made more at home for me. 😊
An Oregon Trail reference works so well for some reason.
You missed an almost forgotten aspect of the Egg McMuffin. While they were test marketing it, it wasn't served in the box we get nowadays. Instead, it came in a flat tray, open faced, with a small tub of strawberry preserves on the side. I remember having it this way multiple times at the McDonalds near the University of Wisconsin Campus in Madison in late 1972. The first couple times my American upbringing rejected the idea of sweet and savory, but on about the third time I put the preserves on the sandwich before closing it up. They are delicious this way, and I don't like to eat one any other way. Yes, it's not on the menu, but McDonalds still offers packets of strawberry preserves to those in the know.
I do like the McMuffins. I haven't had one for a long time, but always enjoyed them.
funFact: the internal smell of dissected chicken guts is exactly the same as an egg McMuffin. Bon Appetite

After I retired and did not come across a McDonald every morning I started making them myself, I use a ramekin in a toaster oven to cook the egg.
@@SlyPearTree they sell these nice little silicone ring molds ( orange in color with a little "egg" handle) at Walmart that not only are great for eggs, but I use them to mold my ground sausage for *perfectly* round sausage patties. My wife brought home four of them (retired here, as well) so I can make enough at one time that we can both eat together. My wife and I love to have a McGriddle and Iced Coffee for breakfast when traveling.
Idk about yall, but I take a couple bites of my hash brown and then put the rest of it in my egg McMuffin it’s literally the best!
Jack in the Box was the GOAT because they were the first major chain to serve breakfast all day long before McDs.
And I used to LOVE Jack's Breakfast Pita Pocket Breakfast.
i assume sonic is popular in Oklahoma because thats where it was founded, Shawnee Oklahoma.
Perfect time to release this video. I may have to find a McDonald's now!
I was just thinking the same thing. When I had my kitchen remodeled a decade ago, I had McMuffin at least 4 or 5 days a week ... haven't had one in a decade ... need to try again!
That’ll be $4.50.. I miss my $1 sausage McGriddle
Don't you just love those Bidenomics? I need to remember to set a bet during the election, I'd probably make bank.
Biden doesn’t require McDonald’s (or any other company) to engage in greedflation, shrinkflation, and skimpflation .. You're blaming Joe instead of the people who are actually guilty.. which is exactly what they want. Educate yourself.
@@blunderingfool - Not really Biden's economics though. Companies realized they could just increase prices and keep blaming Covid.. or the workers wanting to earn a living.. But its all greedflation, shrinkflation, and skimpflation..
@@blunderingfool I do love 'Bidenomics', because the job market is better than it has been in a long time, and I am not foolish enough to blame the president for bird flu outbreaks (driving up egg prices) or Putin invading Ukraine (driving up wheat prices).
McMuffins are fabulous, especially the sausage ones. Makes my mouth water watching this.
HOORAY! Our favorite narrator!
You should be the narrator for many shows on telly, it'd be a vast improvement if ya ask me.
I'm going to need you to explain what sort of wizard secrets are involved in the McGriddle. I understand what a Muffin is, I am unsure how a Gridle got alchemy-fused into a loaded pancake though.
I’m sure I’ve seen a video about the McGriddle on CZcams before, I think this channel already did a video on it. It could’ve been Joshua Weissman though, I’m not sure.
The McMuffins is a classic breakfast menu of all time. 😀👍
He's back!!!!!
I can’t listen to these videos if he’s not doing the narration
When everything got shut down in the UK for lockdown reasons in 2020, my Brother worked in a McDonalds. He came home that last night with 24 muffins and 24 eggs. He had a McMuffin daily for a lot longer than most.
Here in Michigan McDonald's eliminated all day breakfast right after Covid. Being the marijuana is legal here this was a huge mistake due to the collective munchies that half the state suffers from.
Nah it was a mistake because people work different shifts and would go to McDonald’s for all day breakfast as a way to start and/or end their day.
The McMuffins are the greatest culinary invention in fast food history.
Ew no. Realistically the greatest culinary invention is the flash-frozen patty since it revolutionized fast food to take off with low costs and quick cook times, and making the industry what it is today.
My favorite fast food breakfast menu is at Hardee’s. Nice, fluffy, buttery biscuits. And decent coffee. That said, I make my breakfast at home most days because I drink smoothies frequently.
I've never cared about the breakfast all day thing. What I want more than anything is a cheeseburger available in the morning.
Would love to see a video on the Mcgriddle
I miss the Spanish Omelette Bagel though... that was the best thing on McD's breakfast menu.
Although I do like McMuffins, I think McGriddles are better. Also, as an Oklahoman, I was shocked to hear that Sonic is more popular for breakfast here than McDonald's! I rarely eat at either place, but I've definitely been to McDonald's far more often than Sonic, especially for breakfast!
0:14 who doesnt love cheese paper? 9:07 that was bigger than they are now.....
Back in the very early '80's, there was a Mcdonalds that served Egg Mcmuffins all day. A glorious afternoon snack with coffee (?) at 3:00! I still miss the full breakfasts - scrambled eggs, pancakes, etc. and I wish Mcdonald's would bring them back even if the scrambled eggs needed pancake syrup for flavor LOL!!!!
Breakfast has always been my favorite McDonalds meal.
Ty for saying “Mayor McCheese!”
A+ video!
LOVE IT! Fascinating history!
Sandwich came out of my hometown. The old State Street location is still there to this day
Love Egg McMuffins
Mc Donald's has the best breakfast 😊
sausage egg and cheese mcgriddles are to die for
I never tried a McMuffin, but I have tried Burger King's croissantwich and hashbrowns! They are delicious IMO, maybe it's my local Burger King that does them well? I saw the Burger Chef clip and got sad, considering all of the wasted potential the defunct chain had. They even made a kid's meal before Mcdonald's did! I'd love to see Weird History videos on Burger Chef and Jack In The Box. For Jack In The Box, PLEASE talk about the 1970s era, as nobody ever seems to mention that era of JITB. Rodney Allen Rippy was their spokesperson, but Jack In The Box also had an animated version of Jack, as well as other characters, as their mascots throughout the 70s. Unfortunately, only three commercials [Baseball, In The Park, Jack In The Box animated commercial 1970s], and three comics [How A House Makes Noise, Where Oil Comes From, How Pain Helps Us] are on CZcams, but I'm glad we even have those considering how poorly documented pre 90s JITB history is. Paul Winchell, best known as the voice of Tigger from Winnie The Pooh, did the voices of 70s era Jack and the other characters. It's most noticeable with Jack himself and Onion Ring Thing.
McDonald's for breakfast is the only place my wife cares to go to because she just doesn't like fast food places. So, about once every other week on average, before getting groceries, we go to McDonald's where she always gets the Egg McMuffin. I try to mix it up a bit. I usually get the Sausage McMuffin. Those are really good if you need to eat them while driving as they tend to hold together.
The breakfast burritos are great too, especially if you’re hungover!
Sausage McMuffin was my favorite fast food breakfast item until Wendy’s came along with their breakfast Baconator sandwich.
2:23 I have The Oregon Trail Card Game on my desk right now!
I have decided to recreate my own breakfast sandwiches at home. I did alright with the egg mcmuffin and I did okay on the ham egg and cheese croissant sandwich. It gets expensive to eat out these days!
I AGREE!! Best to "pre-prepare" them, if you 'must'. And freeze them. DELICIOUS...if done "right".....AND, "like the jingle"...."you do it all for you".....and "YOURS"!!!! THE WAY PEOPLE "OUGHT" TO DO.....ANYTHING!!!!👍😁🫡
Not to downplay how good a McMuffin hits, but Jack in the Box’s all day breakfast had been a thing long before McD and continues to be a thing as well.
The sausage mcmuffin with egg is probably my favorite fast food item ever!
Egg McMuffin is the only item I'll eat at McDonald's... Mostly for nostalgic reasons. It's some of the best memories I had with my father as a kid. He would put grape jelly on it so it wasn't so dry and I would eat the whole thing. I still do that whenever I get one from time to time.
I remember when people were freaking out that the "all day breakfast" would deplete the nation's egg supply. I was just psyched that I could get a McGriddle whenever I wanted.
Great video thanks ❤😊
As a chef just wanna appreciate your use and understanding of 86'd
When I worked at mcds we used to argue about the biscuit 'tails'. ( the remaining bicuit dough/ end piece to keep them all same size)So yummy.
When they fried the English muffins on the grill the mcmuffins were the best thing ever. Now they run them through the toster/bun warmer, and it makes them rubbery. Also, they stopped using the butter flavored oil on them, so they taste dry. It's just not good anymore.
Thank goodness they got the right narrator, I really wanted to hear this one!
The Sausage Egg McMuffin is one of my favorite fast food items. I never tried it until a friend who worked at McD’s told me they crack fresh eggs in the restaurant - before that, I assumed it was all scrambled from a carton and never cared to try it.
I want a McMuffin rn...
McD's breakfast menu items are the only foods from there my digestive system can handle.
McDonald's all day breakfast was amazing. It's a shame they stopped doing it.
Blame the franchisees, not the company. They’re the ones who bitched and moaned to corporate what a “logistical nightmare” It was to have everything necessary for breakfast all day. SMDH *😤*
@a.grimes4202 Okay, I'm gonna come to their defense (mostly the employees' defense) and corroborate that this WAS a nightmare. I worked for McDs as a cook during the tail end of the all day breakfast era and it genuinely was a pain in the ass to have to stop making burgers, chicken sandwiches, and nuggets to go and make fresh eggs, sausages, etc and all that. It truly does hurt the flow of everyone and fucks with our time/stats, ESPEICALLY if your store is understaffed -- like mine was (my franchise was strict with time and dished out penalties like you wouldn't believe...).
As a customer I miss all day breakfast, but as an ex employee I can totally see why they're hesitant to implement it again.

I'm actually a bigger fan of Wendy's newest breakfast menu - give me a breakfast Baconator over a Sausage, Egg, and Cheese McMuffin any day. And considering it's still around despite launching during a pandemic, I think this one is here to stay.
A dive into Wendy's history of breakfast menus would be a good topic!

Unfortunately not all McDonald's offer All Day Breakfast. I think as a whole they might have gotten rid of it because of having to have the breakfast equipment ready all day slowed everything down
Pathetic excuse. They need to bring it back.
I love McDonald's Philippines' breakfast menu too. 😊😊😊
Used to love getting the sausage McMuffins for 2 for $2 a long time ago. Then it went to 2 for $4. Now I would just go buy the muffins, eggs, and sausage patties from the stores and just cook it for the family.
I dislike this, at least make the sizes bigger, add some special ingredient or throw in a phone case... something. Not just sneakily push the cost up
At least lie to us, make us believe we are getting value, your so good at it, make me believe i made the right decision instead of leaving me staring at the bumper of another car while i slurp my extra jumbo coffee and chow my plastic chow

Great video. Interesting fact: in some McD restaurants in Muslim countries, they use Chicken Sausage, Chicken ham or Chicken patties for their McMuffins.
I genuinely love how restaurants are willing to alter their recipes to account for people with different dietary needs or wants. I'm not a vegan or anything but a restaurant that has options always makes things easier for crowds, when everyone might have different needs.
... and Subway Sandwich shops in the UK removed all pork products from some of their stores entirely. No ham... No bacon... for ANYONE!!
So attempts to pander don't always turn out so great.
@@nasoj3029 _Some_ stores, yeah. Snopes in 2014 says:
"In the United States, Subway has several kosher franchises that do not carry pork products or serve dairy with meat.
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, fewer than 200 out of 1,500 Subway sandwich franchises conform to Muslim dietary restrictions"
And a 2023 page says "In the United Kingdom, 202 of the 2,000 Subway locations serve halal-only meat by Sharia law"
I expect these are either located in very Muslim neighborhoods, owned by Muslim franchisees, or both.

My favorite fast food breakfast is at Hardees / Carl's Junior's (Depending on what state you are in).
My favorite McDonalds breakfast item has been discontinued. I don't remember what it was called, but it was essentially a "steak" sandwich using a bagel, onions, and a garlic sauce.

I'll forever remember McDonald's breakfast as the laughing-stock of my high school, though: on a few occasions, the school ordered in the breakfasts for the whole class, but the grease melded it to the packaging providing as much comedy as Calories.
My go-to fast food breakfast while out and about was the standard A&W toast and eggs with orange juice.
That said I haven't had breakfast at a restaurant, fast food or otherwise, for years. I've switched to only having a snack item like a fruit or yogurt at the beginning of the day.
