Jeep wrangler CAN-C canbus error FIX - replace STAR connector

- Our 2019 Jeep wrangler JLU was throwing every possible error code on the dashboard and sometimes was unsafe as a result. The dashboard would completely freak out and sometimes the engine would die. After 2 months at the dealer we got fed up and decided to take matters into our own hands. The errors were related to the Canbus, specially the CAN-C data bus that most of the computers use to communicate in the Jeep and many other Mopar vehicles. Some folks on the Jeep wrangler forums had reported that replacing the STAR connector behind the glovebox fixed their issue. I’m happy to report that indeed it fixed our problem as well. Does your Jeep behave like shown in this video, showing every error on the dash? Check out how we fixed it.
Part needed: store.mopar.com/oem-parts/mop...
We used Jeep J-scan and an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter to read and clear codes:
OBDLink MX+: amzn.to/3yTZhKM
JSCAN: apps.apple.com/us/app/obd-jsc... - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Been having Can Bus issues for months dealer quoted me 800+ to recheck all the wiring and replace it. Glad I found this will give it a shot appreciate the video.
The dealerships have very few real technicians anymore. I'm glad that you finally got it fixes. Me friend says that they find lots of pin fitment issues with the can bus data connections. Sometimes just unplugging and plugging it back in fixes the issue. Crazy stuff with these new vehicles. Thanks Scott!
Yeah I was wondering if the act of simply replugging things would have fixed it. I saved the old connector just in case. Disgrace that they had it 2 months without fixing that.
@@ThisOldBus They obviously didn't look at the bus signal with a scope or they would have seen the corrupt data and traced it down or realized the termination resistor was open. Thanks Scott.
If this wasn’t the fix I would have needed to break out the oscilloscope myself. The location of the termination resistors isn’t documented anywhere, though. I was concerned the termination might have been inside one of the computers at an end of the bus and not externally accessible.
@@ThisOldBus They are in certain modules. The best way to check is across the 2 wires for 60 OHMS. You got this though so awesome repair!
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO … I ALREADY HAVE THE PART , NOW I KNOW HOW TO CHANGE IT … YOU THE MAN 🫡🫡
Good to see you making another video Scott!
Been dealing with some family member health issues that’s put the kibosh on life for the last 5 months. I’m hoping for another bus trip in august, got some repairs to make first.
@@ThisOldBus We took the bus to a lake last weekend (200 miles round trip), then the ocean in 2 weeks. We're hoping to take it to Missouri and Texas in September. I hope your family member gets better soon.
This is the best channel on CZcams! Can’t wait for another Quartzite run!
Been dealing with some family health issues that put the kibosh to some plans, hoping for another closer bus trip in August. Got some repairs to make first.
@@ThisOldBus awesome!😎
Good to see you. Hope all is well with you and yours. I am somewhat averse to buying new vehicles just because of that. I have a friend who owns a mechanic shop and get to hear the stories regularly.
Things are starting to get back to normal. Supposed to be going to Alaska again in a couple weeks. I have been 3 or 4 times since December dealing with some family stuff. I have a couple major issues to deal with on the new bus before it’ll be ready to roll, which is likely going to be in august.
Thank you for this!
Thank you for this detailed video. I am have the same issue. Just ordered the part.
Good luck. Enjoy
@@ThisOldBus I swapped out the connector and the dash lights are still on. Do I have to clear the codes? I own a Tazer as well.
I cleared the codes using the Bluetooth adapter and app linked in the description. I do not have a Tazer.
Have the same issue contacted the dealer months ago.. they were so busy that the tech just told me to replace this after I explained all the codes and all the issues I was having
Same issue with mine. 2020 happens now and then. Got a new canbus but haven’t switched yet.
They had the same problem on Apollo 13. Try the luner lander
Is there a diagram that shows where the pins go? Want to make sure they were put in properly after dealership messed with it
Not that i found, but i think it’s a bus, check continuity with an ohmmeter on the empty connector to see if they are connected.
Were you able to get the actual part number on that?
Link in the description to mopar part
Is it still working correctly?
Yes!
Is your jeep good after changing this? My 2019 is having the same problem. Its even locked up a couple of times to where i couldn't even get it in gear. All the warning lights are randomly coming on and off. Its been in the dealership twice and still not fixed. I just ordered this part from your link, and i hope to god it fixes it.
Yessir still good. Ya know just unplugging and re-plugging all those connectors might fix it too. Same problem you describe… i was dead in the water 15 mins prior to this fix. Damn thing would not shift out of park, lots of errors cycling on screen as in video. I noticed something later on the vid… it was NO BUS or something like that at the bottom of the screen.
@ThisOldBus Thank you soooo much for the video and replying. The part should be here Friday or Saturday. But I'm going to try and unplug those when I get home from work today. Again thanks.
Let us know how it goes please?
@@ThisOldBus I sure will. Thanks.
Did you try it yet?
to clear the codes in your jeep you have to get pass secure gate way
Not to clear the codes for this, to change settings you do. I show how I cleared them in the video.
@@ThisOldBus at the end of your video you could not clear codes. that’s because of Chrysler secure gate way. read up on AutoAuth
Some codes are permanently stored, I don’t need to clear those - just the check engine light, and it is off now and has stayed off.
