One of the best drummers on the planet with 0 fucking doubt, what Billy does is borderline inhuman. Controlled agression, precision, speed, stamina, the ear he has to break down rhytms on the spot. I am just amazed and I really wanna hear his drumming somewhere now after DEP disbanded. Luckily, saw them live and holy shit it was chaos! One of the best gigs of my life.
I remember when I first heard Dillinger, this was when Chris Pennie was the drummer and I thought this guy must have double bass drums, a million toms, a billion cymbals, then I found out he had a simple set up and I was blown away, I hadn't been drumming very long at the time and thought you needed a massive set up to get that sound lol

My old band played with this guys band way back on the first Dave Mustaine/Megadeth traveling festival tour The Gigantour. Both our bands didn’t really fit in with the Symphony X’s and Dream Theaters that we were touring with. So we for no other reason bonded simply because we were the outcasts of the festival. Great times.
This may be the single best lesson on this channel. So cool just how much you can do with a single pattern. It has opened up such an insane gateway for creativity for me.
Used to chat with Billy on Facebook and he was always so nice and insightful... He introduced me to Mike Mangini's drumming and it all made since where he drew his influence from.... He is a brilliant musician.
I'm not into this kind of music but it is really a special kind of drumming and feel, really impressive. I was waiting for that drummer to make a nice video. When I think about it, but at the first hearing of this song (and also "When I lost my bet"), I was disturbed of how a drummer can play that, almost disliking it by not understanding it, sounded very messy. I really changed my mind when I visually saw what he was doing... damn... like we say in my country, I'll shut my mouth forevermore.
Love your view considering your not into his style of music of music with his band, I think no matter the style or genre, when you see someone play with real conviction, effort and talent you can't knock it...of course i'll be biased cause Dillinger are my favourite band...believe it or not i hate metal music for the most part, I'm a rock guy who loves, in my opinion a handful of great metal bands but these guys 'dillinger' are a one off and it's such a shame it's ending.
Petit Louis Very respectable to be able to appreciate an art form objectively, whether you actually enjoy it or not. Truly commendable comment, an increasingly rare thing on CZcams these days unfortunately. I personally didn't really "get it" at first despite being a metalhead, but Diligence really grew on me over time as I started to see that beneath the chaos is some truly special musicianship. Seeing them live last summer at Heavy Montreal was absolutely mind bending and face melting.
I couldn't have put it better. I do get down with this sort of music some times, but I've never really looked at any of the drummers (aside from live local stuff) ... I felt my viewpoint shifting all the while I watched the intro here... there's... no denying it when you see a human performing so authentically, with such intensity and facility. Incredibly powerful video
Fabulous drummer and band, amazing!! I've been playing drums for a couple decades now and it never ceases to amaze me not only average people who aren't musically inclined so much that couldnt believe I used 4 piece kit and lesser cymbal setup, but the musicians, specifically, drummers who could not wrap their minds around the fact I played the kind of music with minimal setup and gear. As the old saying goes; *it's not the size of your ship, but the motion of the ocean."
Two things: I think the anti-social perception of him in Death Grips would probably prevent him from wanting to do something like this, as well as the fact that he may not have the much technical expertise to share with us seeing as he said he mostly plays from feel. I think the best lesson we could receive from Zach is to play with as much passion as possible, and don't worry about occasionally bleeding all over your drum set lol
Seen Dillinger since 2001 with the different drummers including Billy and all of them have such great feels and have added something different to the DEP sound. Billy is like a mix of Chris Pennie and Gil Sharone, I really enjoy listening to him play.
Absolutely loved this lesson! Great formula not only for building independence and speed and create new rhythms with anything, but it could be great for improv/solos!
God damn. Every time I go to watch a video about TDEP I realize that I started listening to them when I was still a year or two away from graduating high school, have been listening to them ever since I heard Calculating Infinity, and it's been just a pure bliss this whole time. Like, there's maybe 5-10 bands/producers across the genres I like that I have listened to as consistently as TDEP, and they're probably the only band ever I've been listening to for as long as Dillinger. Okay, maybe Pink Floyd, but they're a cult classic that hasn't released a new song in decades, and hasn't done so for quite some time before I ever heard them first, and sadly I can't say that I love every single Pink Floyd's album ever released, but as far as TDEP goes, every album they dropped had at least a single great song, and I haven't expected any better from any band or a solo musician for ages, and nobody has ever delivered on that front. My god this band makes me emotional.
Yes. This band is the greatnest of all times. I has been listening TDEP since 2011, and i know a Insane number of artists, my opinion about Dillinger is the same every year..."they are the kings of the Music and technic"

Love that he mentioned Converge, Cult Leader, and Nails there at 48:32. I've been venturing into that more hardcore-driven style of music as of the past couple years and those are three bands that have stuck out to me.
Drumeo might want to invest in higher FPS cams, cuz these cams can't keep up with some of these fast guys haha! At moments I have no clue what he plays by watching, can only figure out by listening and guessing what it was I just missed xD
Rasmus Rosenfeldt Hansen Just a matter of getting used to it. Actually it's more like the way we saw naturally. But we were "taught" on movies to see at 24 frames.

Just a simple setup drumset but can play massive songs. Awesome drummer, Hollyskill drumming, and a good way to break your cymbals and drumstick. #lol sorry guys just joking 😂
Really gettin' into this guy, Matt Halpern and Jay Pastones lately. Haake will always be the zenith if Metal for me, Roddy too, they're very articulate.
Dillinger is a treasure.. I hope history looks back on them and give them the credit they deserve, there's really nothing like it
I was able to see them multiple times live in NYC - The kids nearly ripped the venue apart - it was absolutely mayhem and I loved it

He plays in a few bands now, but END is the best of them. He played on a split 7" they have coming out next week.
His new band is called "thoughtcrimes". Released an EP in 2022. It's fantastic.
I like people playing metal with simple kit like him.

Chris Pennie introduced me to intricate drumming and linear patterns. Before then I had no concept of the complexities.
Chris Pennie introduced me to intricate drumming and linear patterns. Before then I had no concept of the complexities.
yeah, him and Brann Dailor or Ben Koller all have simple kits and do inhumane stuff!
Yeah, I think more metal drummers should to that to prove that they actually know what they're doing :D
Billy's technique is completely insane. He's a jazz drummer masquerading as a metal/punk drummer. Dillinger truly found a gem.
I absolutely agree!!
Billy is an architect. Comes across as so smart and knowledgeable about the craft. Really respect and admire both his skill and passion.

It's about time I listen to TDEPs discography
I recommend all of it apart from their 2007 album "Ire Works" which is pretty disappointing. That's just my opinion though, you may like it.
Try hearing to Calculating Infinity and Miss Machine. The drum parts were played by Chris Pennie though. But it is still dope.
Personally, I believe Pennie was the best DEP drummer. His drumming on the early DEP stuff is untouchable. So much respect for Billy though :)
I really admire how people with a lot of knowledge can explain things so simple, Billy Rymer is my hero
Billy Rymer is like, the most interesting drummer to listen to in heavy music. He’s my utter favorite.
Yeah!
Always will be for me. There will never be another TDEP.
I really dig how he consistently maintains this super high stick height. It adds so much to the experience, both audibly and visually.

would be insane but i honestly can’t see it happening since DG is so antisocial media-wise. but to be fair he’s always been the one to do interviews
