Hi! I'm Haley, a producer on this piece. Right now, we're seeing that health care workers treating the coronavirus are in desperate need of more medical and personal protective equipment. Stocks are disappearing. The CDC has said scarves or bandanas can be used for protection as a last resort. My mother is a nurse practitioner, and she even told me about how her hospital is rationing PPE and monitoring who can wear it. Another doctor told us that every day, they worry about when they'll run out of ventilators needed to help patients breathe. Right now, governments and manufacturers aren't keeping up with the demand.
So I decided to speak with some of the folks working on solutions. They're a wide range of innovators, from scientists to high school students. A lot of them share their designs through online platforms like Slack and then field test them with medical professionals. One design was a laser-cut face shield to protect against droplets; another, a ventilator prototype made from a wide variety of materials, including car parts. There was also the 3-D printable alternative for the N95 respirator - the engineers told me that it would even go through the same NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) testing as certified N95 masks. Some of this equipment, like the face shields, is already in the hands of clinicians. For many of them, it's the only option.
If you have any questions about these efforts or anything else you see in the video, I'll be answering down below. Thanks for watching! Stay safe and healthy.

They're coming in too fast and too many are dying. This isn't a mediocre cough, it shuts down peoples lungs entirely both filling them with fluid and attacking the cells that line the lungs which leaves permanent scarring even among survivors. As a veteran of the 3d printing and product design industry since 2007
and experienced medical device designer. I don't think it is wise to
3d print filter masks or respirators. Most are using materials not
safe for regular contact with skin or that slowly release toxins.
Many also use improper things as filters. Such as makeup pads which
contain fiber glass. Breathing through fiber glass napkins and pads
can lead to serious lung harm. Actual
medical filters are engineered, not cut from an old t-shirt. Cotton
and nylon fabrics are not suitable filters either. They trap large
amounts of particulate matter then release them into your air ways
with any slight vibration. None of the masks I've seen are properly
engineered, and only risk of providing a false sense of security. Just
like with the 3d printed medical valves. I see amateurs excited to
help but not many thinking about the legal and safety ramifications.

But, frankly, while this pandemic is going on, tens of millions of people are losing their jobs and can't pay bills, so I'm doubting whether they would send yours to Collections. If they do, just ignore Collections. And, forget harm to your credit rating. With this pandemic, everything has changed about all that, again for tens of millions of Americans. (Do make a note of date and time you called them for future reference. You made ATTEMPT to work things out with them rather than just ignore them, so that might help in future). AND, I think they're trying to bluff you. Never missed a payment, called them to try to work it out, and you're THREATENED with your case being sent to Collections? I think that's bullsh#t. Guess how many OTHER people are probably calling them and saying the same thing? Do they really plan to send EVERYONE's bill to Collections? I doubt it.

The regulatory requirements for PPEs are strict and controlled for good reason since peoples lives are dependant on it. There's all kinds of liability issues with professionals using equipment that's not approved. People start dying and families start sueing claiming inappropriate equipment was used.
