  • We love puzzles but hate losing puzzle pieces or dedicating limited table space to a slow puzzle session. So I designed and built this low profile puzzle tray that has large drawers for storing your puzzle pieces when stowed away or help you sort out your similar sections.

    Clever trick for centering the drawer slide.

    I’m definitely a beginner woodworker and my wife and I love puzzles to so I thought I’d give this build a try. It was a little tricky and it didn’t come out near as nice as yours but it’s functional. Thanks for the idea and plans.

    I started making a big puzzle tray 3 foot by 4 foot for giant 3000-piece puzzles for my daughter.
    It has grove in sides for a bottom and top but then i realized how do i make openings for drawers so i guess just going to make whole end slide out like yours but i already have it beveled on a 45 at corners maybe i will make trays only go part way under since it is so big and glue in dividers your box gives me some ideas

    Haha, Adam, I just did a search on making a puzzle board because I'm planning to make one for myself, and look who just made one? 😁 Hope you're doing well, my friend!

    love the design an im building it now but I dont have enough material. the 8x72 isn't enough if you use it for the center piece that reinforces the tray. I am going to use something else for that but I think you need to add it to you materials list

      Thanks Robert, I'm going to check the plans and see where the issue is. Thanks for the heads up! Happy Building! And puzzling!

    Thanks for sharing this awesome design! But I'm a bit puzzled. (o:
    I just looked over the plans on your site, and tried drawing this up in Sketchup. Unless I misunderstand something, the dimensions aren't adding up for me. Total length (length of outside stretcher) is 37-1/2". But the drawer components (3/4" front + 17" side + 3/4" back = 18-1/2") * 2 plus a 3/4" center support comes to 37-3/4" which is 1/4" more than the length of the outside stretcher. I realize that I can just resize things to make it fit, but I wanted to make sure that I understand it correctly before doing so. Am I missing something?

    • @LazyGuyDIY
      @LazyGuyDIY  Před 3 lety +1

      Aha, I have solved this enigma that's been puzzling you! So the drawer box itself is 17" for the sides and 3/4" for the front, however, the back piece (that is 3/4" thick) attaches inside the 17" outside stretchers, rather than bumping up against the back of it. So the drawer box is then only 17.75" deep. Doubled up with both drawers and the 3/4" spacer in the middle and you get 36.25". So there's actually a little extra space that's a margin for error if the drawer boxes are a little too long or if you over stuff your puzzle drawer and pieces fall out the back instead of getting damaged. Hope that helps!

    How would i go about doing this build if i dont have access to a table saw?

    • @LazyGuyDIY
      @LazyGuyDIY  Před rokem +2

      You should be able to do a lot of the cuts with a circular saw and miter saw. Your one issue will be with any of the dados that were cut. If you have access to a router, you can cut those grooves with a straight cut bit. If that's not an option, you'll have to get creative with gluing thin stock in place to make those grooves to slide the panels into.

    It seems 100 times harder than it looks, it doesn't help that we don't all have these tools.

      I definitely used advanced techniques and tools in the video, but if you head to the website post I explain which tools and methods to use instead and have a full step by step guide.
