How to Make a Cutting Board with Minimal Tools
#woodworking #cuttingboards#woodworkingproject - Jak na to + styl
Just wanna thank you for the video. About 150 students of mine follow along with your plans to make this cutting board each year in our high school woodshop class.
Oh wow thats amazing! I'm glad to hear that a highschool woodshop still exists out there!
Man, Im never getting tired watching people doing magic
He really is great, isn't he? haha
Magic? He literally just gliued some straight boards together then sanded them. Your bar for what is Magic is EXTREMELY low.
There can never be enough video like this for new folks starting out. Nice to see something being shown without the need for the high priced equipment that most new folks don't have.
I'd personally like to see more in the realm of minimal equipment levels. Nice work and worth a sub.
Thank you I appreciate it 👍
Great video very informative and helpful for us new guys ..
Starting out? Starting out means a circular saw, a power drill, a square and ruler, and a hammer. When you have gotten your shop to the level of table saw fitted in to a modular stand, you are past the point of just starting out. A table saw or miter saw are all major investments to your wood working shop. And when you have more wood clamps than what is on the shelf at your building supply store ... yeah you are past the starting out phase.
This project may seem like a quick easy project with minimal tools, but the project ease is a direct result of having a full carpenter shop of tools.
@@superdave8248 And as a new woodworker, I don't know if I could pull this off with just a circular saw and the other tools you listed. I don't trust myself to be able to get straight cuts with a circular saw and I *definitely* can't afford a table saw.

1:33 a little love tap from the offcut of the table saw is always fun.
This was brilliant! I made 6 small boards for serving purposes in this style. Really easy and quick work for a very nice outcome.
This is really great for beginners. And unlike some other videos this one has CC. As a member of the DEAF COMMUNITY I find this VERY HANDYB&=THOUGHTFUL.
I like the narrower strips. Thanks for the great idea Some GREAT advice thank you
The first chopping board video I found that didn’t involved using a jointer.
Great stuff. Subbed.
This is the *best* video I've ever seen on cutting boards. Fantastic job, especially for the beginner audience.
Awesome video! Finally..... a tutorial on cutting boards that is realistic for newbies! 💯
Short and sweet cost effective way to get a custom cutting board. Thanks!
These instructions were great, super simple, and the boards were a lot of fun to make. I like the thin stripe over the thick ones in the packaged kits because they look more elegant. I couldn't find the same widths, but I had extra lengths of 3/4" leftovers, so I just added them up to 8" across for the thinner main boards. A+ would do again. These are good travel-friendly gifts, too - they pack away easily!
Appreciate you, Matt! This video is great at demystifying and lowering that barrier to entry for folks. Also love your wax recipe and methodology there. Has served me quite well.
Glad I could help you Herb!
This was great! I need to make a BIG board to help with my bread making obsession. I can easily adapt these methods to a big build with my basic tools and skills. Thank you!
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. Have my 1st one gluing as we speak and I can wait to see them when they are finished! Getting 6 gifts ready for the holiday season!
Awesome!
Very nicely done, both the woodworking and the video!
wow, beautiful job! and I like the tip at 5:30 with the clamping calls, at 75 years old I have started a little wood working again and will add these to my list to make, I have made cutting boards, chess boards, etc years ago. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for providing a simple method, im a virgin to woodworking but I want to make something nice. Not to mention I'm working with the basics tool wise. I cant wait to execute, thanks again
Thank you for the video. I have been wanting to make a cutting board for some time now and this video has given me the push!! Thanks again for a quality tutorial 👌
You're very welcome!
Thanks for sharing your skills, looking forward to learning more from you.
Awesome video! Simple and not overly complicated to someone new (like myself). As someone that laser engraves onto wood and occasional cutting boards I’ve decided to, instead of buying already made boards to engrave on, to make my own and I’ve got minimal tools. All the tools you used here I have as well so I’ll have to try!
Those boards are so clean and elegant, thanks for all of the great tips, I've been using a water bottle for glue-ups lately because it was conveniently pre-filled after a bike ride, but a spray bottle would make so much more sense.
Yep I always keep a spray bottle handy for water popping 👍
REALLY GOOD ADVICE, THANK YOU MWA WOODWORKS
Great video, learned a lot from it and can't wait to use these techniques for when i build mine
Awesome video! All the other "see how simple it is" requires a tool park and 40 hours, only to sell them for $25. This process really makes sense to me.
Thanks for the easy to follow video! What dimension of lumber do you tend to prefer for your cutting board projects?
Gorgeous! I've seen a bunch of cutting boards that have a shallow channel routered in about an inch around the entire perimeter (I suppose to prevent liquid from falling over the edges?).
If you have the router it could be a nice touch.
Wow the tip about ripping the ripping consistent size strips on the table saw but using the cutoff was golden! Makes me feel dumb for not thinking of it! Thanks for the video! I had a planer that was my dads but he got his shop complete and took it back so now all I got is a jointer...lol! This video is great thank you!
Ha! Thanks!
What a great video! You just answered all the questions I had... as I wanted to start making some cutting boards but didn't have all the equipment. Thank you!
Thx for sharing the steps. Like it. Watching from Ontario Canada 😊
Just stumbled across your channel (10 items needed in your shop), and went down the rabbit hole. Great videos, great tutorials, great advice. Now to make some cutting boards, and more importantly cutting board wax.
Thanks Brendan! That makes me so happy 👍
Omgoodness, thank you!! This is a great video! Clear, concise And inspiring!
You gotta new sub👍
Simple and helpful. Thank you.
Superb beginner’s (me) tutorial. Thanks a lot
I haven't been into long grain cutting boards but must admit that your design is very nice and not too labor intensive. You've sold me - well done!
For clarity, what kind of cutting boards do you prefer? Long grain makes sense because the knife marks from use will be against the grain. Is there another simple style like this you'd recommend trying?
@@onethousandwords I made a few of these and gave them away but one. I admit that they are nice and work well and the recipients liked them. That said, I've made only edge grain prior but you are right that it's more involved and takes more wood. Knife marks are the same regardless, but the edge boards are much thicker (about 1.25").
Walnut maple and Cherry. Always winning combos
Excellent video....thank you for sharing!
Great job is simple to build, and have some maple and Red Oak, to make some additional cutting boards. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Buttery smooth boards and a buttery smooth tutorial/video. A CZcams primer in instructional video production, extremely well done. Having only a 6" planer, I've always shied away from cutting boards, but you know what you've done, now?!
Hey I used to have a 6 inch delta jointer/planer and made it work 👍 you gotta use what you have for sure. Have a great day!
Thank you so much......this was by far the best instructional video.....guess I will go purchase a table saw
Fantastic work, dude! The boards look amazing! 😃
Thanks a lot for all the tips!!!
Happy new year! And stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks brother 👍
This is a really awesome tutorial. Can't wait to make my first board!
Literally was just going to say the same exact thing.
Outstanding video. I have no tools or skills, but I think I'd actually try this. Thanks man!!!!!
Great Video! Great to see projects being done without 1000s of euro worth of tools/machines like other videos! Subscribed!!
Thanks! I might be able to do that.
Great tutorial sir, I have to give this a try for sure. Thank you for sharing.
How often after the initial coating of wax/mineral oil, do you recommend reapplying the combo? Is it a one and done kind of thing or would you tell your customers 1 month, 3 month, etc, etc?
This wasreally cool. Thanks!
Fantastic job on this video man! They keep getting better and better!
Thanks a ton!
Finally a cutting board tutorial without a planar and and edger. Thank you so much!!
You're very welcome Justin!
Just started my sled THANK YOU.
Just found your channel and I sure am glad I did. Great video, I've been looking into trying to make some cutting boards and I've learned the most from you. Thanks
Awesome! Glad to have you on board!
Thanks for this excellent video, you have taken the trouble to edit it and that is much appreciated. There are so many useful tips that I have picked up.
Thanks Brett 👍
Excellent video. Wish I had your workshop setup. As someone who uses wooden chopping boards I suggest you make them bigger and include a juice channel which you could add with your router. They are beautiful though.
Sweet techniques. Thanks.
You have awesome video sir. Clear, concise instructions. Truly appreciate it.
Thank you 🙏
Hermoso trabajo
Great vid. Subscribed!
Great Work! Thanks for sharing.
Love your work, Cheers John
Thank you sir
Best video I've come across in a long time
I did this over the weekend, and had fantastic results! Learned a lot as well. A few questions....
1. How do you keep from getting glue all over the bars of your clamps?
2. Can you make a video specifically about planing cutting boards? I bought a planer after realizing how much Sanding it required. 🤣
Tomorrow I‘ll follow this video in the shop 👍🏻
Muy bueno. Gracias.
Thank you!
Some good tips! Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome Bruce!
I finish my boards the same way exempt I do one more step of “driving the oil in” with a heat gun then leaving them over night then buffing off. Great video
nice! I've never used a heat gun for this.
This is Amazing video!!! 👏 thank you so much !!! 💓
Super Cool !
This is a great video! One question though? Do you have to reseal (paste) the cutting board every so often?
Thank you so much I really appreciate it amazing work love it
Great video thank you I’m going to make one today
Super video. This is really great.
I got asked to make a chopping board but didn't think I could, now I have no excuse. Thanks.
Get er done!
Where do you get your exotic lumber for your cutting boards?? Also what sizes are these boards? I would appreciate any help with this step!! Thank you so much!!
Wow this was an awesome tutorial Thanks!
Superb tutorial (especially for amateurs like me).
I want to show it's definitely possible! 🙌
Right! It opened my eyes some!
Good tips! Thank you
Thanks for the advice!!! Will definitely try it! New Subscriber
Thank you 🙌 glad I could help
Great video. Where would you recommend getting those varieties of wood from? Not sure if the big box stores carry the darker wood varieties.
Great video, I showed this to my woodworking students and they enjoyed it. Thanks for it.
Wow that's amazing I hope I did a good job for your students!
@@MWAWoodworks you did a great job
Thank You so very much !!
another great video!
Thanks again!
Awesome, top hit and and seems legit.
Great video really nice for people who are just starting
That's great! Glad I could help!
Those are really beautiful! I think I would like them a little larger. How much would you sell a board like that for? Well I guess that depends on the price of the wood.
Excellent tip for ripping thin stock @ 1:55
These look great.
Thank you Angie!
Great video with some great tips thanks
This video is so helpful for me!
Awesome 👍
great video for a wood lover. even if I am starting completely everything is clear and well explained. work as before which I adore. the only trick is, WHERE TO FIND THESE SPECIES OF WOOD when all the DIY stores sell pine 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤨🙄
Great video, thank you
no mineral oil baths? no cringe shots of your family and kid to emotionally manipulate people into buying your products? subscribed!
Haha I love this
Oil is optional if using the right wood. Oil is to protect the wood under constant wet conditions… oil is not to protect you. Mineral oil is a human safe oil.
@@heycouper1835mineral oil is a petroleum product, it should not go in our body.
“Uh oh look who we have here. Haha it’s my little shop helper. (5 year old girl hands him some Titebond 2)
“Don’t forget to Smash 💥 that like button and Hey gang? Why don’t you subscribe as well.”
It is cringe. I also weld and fabricate and none of that nonsense goes on in the welding community.
Great video, thank you sir.
great video. audio is fine.your voice and direction was easy to follow.
Great job 👍
Another great video Matt. Would love to get your take on how to finish an end grain cutting board.
I have a video on end grain butcher blocks! Check it out 👍
And thank you for the kind words as always!
@@MWAWoodworks oh right...I’ve watched that video about 10 times haha. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you
If you put a dowel about the same thickness of the wood you are gluing between the board and the face of the clamp the dowel will tranfer al the pressure to the middle of the board and your joints won't twist in the clamps.
Very nice made it look so easy
