I also noticed that, when bending the tines, the overtones are much less prominent with flat tines than with round (wire) tines. Especially for larger bending angles. Maybe try a series of bended tines, from a small to large angle; and see if overtones sound acceptable.
Thanks for your experiments, and for linking my vids too!

Interesting! I keep having trouble with getting overtones to harmonize the right way, and eliminating buzz on the low notes

Yes and I also struggling to break through the mute on high notes (6th octaves ranges) as well. Kalimba ain't easy instrument to build haha...

Hi, where do you get your tines for your kalimba?

Where do you get your tines? And also is there some sort of step by step of this on a pdf somewhere? Or an article that has the theory? Jw. Really wanna build this

    • @MrKalimba
      @MrKalimba  Před 3 lety

I get mine from local hardware shop. And there is no blueprint or step by step things what so ever, because I just build for own experiment. :D

@@MrKalimba what do you do, just buy steel sheet and cut out the shape of the tines? I've been trying bicycle spokes recently and it isn't cutting it

@@matthewdavis8774 There are many things that you can use as a tines. I would like to say try Windshield wiper rod. It has fairly flat and good width. You can ask to local auto service to grab old windshield wipers. Or try rake teeth. That's also one of material that many DIY kalimba builder use. Sewer rod also really brilliant material for tines as well.

So this can be used to get different overtones and not just eliminate it? This is really interesting!

    • @MrKalimba

It looks like more bend = lower the overtone. So bend tines extremely, maybe possible to get rid of them if I am right. But I couldn't do that because my tines are snaps when I bend over 90 degrees.

@@MrKalimba have you tried using modelling clay , copper tape or lead cutable weight tape for golf and badminton?
I've been using my modelling clay , but after seeing this czcams.com/video/n0-QggSjVQw/video.html (the comments)
      n this czcams.com/video/Vc87vlAak7I/video.html
I got an idea and went to buy the tapes online.
For even Lower tones I've been using magnets that I learned from this video
      czcams.com/video/n0-QggSjVQw/video.html
(magnets are tighter than I thought!)
I hope the lead tapes would work like magnets when it arrives

@@imsacookie5773 Doesn't look like they are controlling overtone, just tune the tines. Because the kalimba from bugsgear literally can't tune as normal kalimba does. So that's why they tune the tines via adding weight or grind the length. Which is I really don't like it. Tune the tines and controlling overtone is totally different area.
