I am thinking the same thing. The second man is working too much and he is not on the table when the driver is taking the award.

The sidecar passenger is just as skilled as the rider but does not get nearly as much credit. Got to love these guys. This is bike racing at it's maddest. Hats off to the IOM competitors and the IOM for continuing the TT races.

That was exactly what I was thinking too. Before watching I thought that the second guy is just redundant and useless but then I realised
the passenger is steering the sidecar just as much as the driver - without him, they aint going around any corners
In my experience it has been the opposite, people talk about how hard it must be to be a passenger, when I was racing F1 sidecars a few years ago I had two passengers that decided to try their hand and driving an outfit, both of them could not hack it as a driver, they found it to hard and too physical. I was a driver and having said what I've just said I would not want to be a passenger for all the tea in china!
@@sidecarbod1441 What I meant is that it is a very difficult skill too. I am sure there are lot of excellent riders who who will not make good sidecar passengers.
The amount of Forearm strength one has to master. Just too do this for 37 miles....

they might have a set belt that helps take weight off so he only uses his arm to shift around more so

This brings back great memories. I used to be the swinger of a sidecar outfit. The most fun I’ve ever had in motorsport. Raced in a support race of the first Moto GP back at Philip Island in the late 80’s.

@Rockstump Bike If they were based on bikes, it'd be one thing - but they're basically tube chassis asymmetric 3-wheel "cars" in the way they're built/function, powered by bike engines but running basically wide car-like race slicks. The engine is in the front section of the 'side car'. But they still have to hold on to the damn things just the same!!! Just crazy machines!

I could never trust the driver with my life at that speed.
Driver has to trust the sidecar pilot also. If he messes up, they crash
But without you, those speeds aren't as easily achieved.

He has to trust his passenger more buddy. These racers, men & women, are like conjoined twins. Total trust & joined at the instinctive level of the brain. The "driver-pilot" absolutely must act as though he's the only person on board. If he's wondering how his passenger is going to behave at any point, he's already being stunted & slowed down by his thoughts. Sidecar racing is the absolute epitome of a symbiotic relationship, where one must forget the other exists.

Sidecar TT road races are the most underrated races in my opinion. These guys, especially the ones in the sidecar, have cajones bigger than a planet.

Back in the 90s my wife and I spent the best weekend of our 48yrs of riding at the Buell sponsored "Old 49er Days" at Truckee CA. Part of the weekend event was a timed run from Donner lake to Donner Ski Ranch at the summit of Donner Pass Rd. All the events were open to "any" type of motorcycle from street legal to full race only, there were even a couple of those mini Legend race cars (MC engines) on the road run. The the most fun to watch were those amazing side cars. I don't know who has more fun, the drivers or their monkeys. The event also had hill climbs up the ski slopes, autocross type MC racing in the Ski Ranch parking lot, and even MC tours through the famed Donner Pass RR snow sheds. Can you imagine trying to get the CA government and the Railroads to give that kind of access today? By the way, for those with a historical interest of the area, there were no known cases of cannibalism.

The coolest thing about this is the team work, its awesome to see. Only Rally or High Speed racing boats is really like this (racing boats have two crew, one handles the throttle the other handles the pitch of the hull)
