  • Find a preserved cross-country mainline, trade the Mendips for the Cotswolds, and squint a bit; the S&D Remembered at the GWSR.
The flagship of steam events at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway is back, as the 'Cotswold Festival of Steam' returns, with this edition celebrating the iconic Somerset and Dorset Railway which ran between Bath and Bournemouth. The festival has been on hiatus during the global pandemic, with the S&D themed rendition originally being scheduled for 2020, but was postponed due to the aforementioned reason.
Held over the weekend of 3rd-5th June, the gala featured an intensive timetable with a variety of passenger workings as well as a demonstration freight service. The GWSR would manage to pull in 5 visiting locomotives for the event, with the majority being from classes synonymous with the S&D - and in some cases, such as with 34028 "Eddystone", genuine Ex-S&D locomotives. Among the visitors would also be 9F - 92203 "Black Prince", an ex-resident of the GWSR which left the railway in 2011 for the North Norfolk Railway. One of the more quaint highlights, was the visit of "Joyce", a Vertical Boilered Geared Tank; a locomotive that inspired the design of two Sentinels based at Radstock on the S&D. "Joyce" would be given a BR identity for the weekend, reminiscent of its scrapped younger cousins, spending much of the event shunting around Winchcombe station.
35006 "Peninsular & Oriental S.N. Co." was originally due to masquerade as 35011 "General Steam Navigation" for the event, with the nameplates being offered for use free of charge, since 35011 was the only 'Merchant Navy' to work a passenger service on the S&D when it hauled 'The Mendip Merchantman' railtour over the route. However, the plan was dropped late on, due to fears of confusion between the two identities. Despite this, a lot of respectful attention to detail went into making the gala. Each day of the event featured a recreation of 'The Pines Express', as well as 'The Mendip Merchantman' railtour. The former ran non-stop from Broadway to Cheltenham Racecourse, scheduled to arrive at 13:13 - the exact time the 'Pines' of old was due to depart from Cheltenham Spa in the 1960's. One of the other attractions at the event, was the presence of Ivo Peters MkVI Bentley.
    Locomotives:
    Ex-Croydon Gasworks Sentinel - 47109 "Joyce"
    BR(W) 6959 'Modified Hall' Class - 7903 "Foremarke Hall"
BR Standard Class 9F - 92203 "Black Prince"
    BR(M) Class 2MT - 46521
Ex-SR Rebuilt 'West Country' Class - 34028 "Eddystone"
    Ex-SR Rebuilt 'Merchant Navy' Class - 35006 "Peninsular & Oriental S.N. Co."
    BR(M) Class 2MT Tank - 41312
    BR(W) 7800 'Manor' Class - 7820 "Dinmore Manor"
    GWR 4200 Class - 4270
All footage filmed on Friday the 3rd, and Saturday the 4th, of June 2022.

Well Matthew, you had me at the thumbnail😃👍🏻👍🏻 They certainly had everything out of the toybox, Black Beauty, properly coloured Bulleids, freight working and that little Sentinel but that Pines Express headboard moment was the crowning glory❤❤

Glad you enjoyed it, Bob! 😊
The whole event was a great spectacle in of itself, with some excellent organisation to pull it all together. The Bulleid pairing was great to see - especially knowing how well the respective owners have collaborated over the years.
The 9F on the Pines was an amazing sight. Especially at Gotherington among the pine trees.

Outstanding videography and editing. 8 locos in steam. Wow. Clearly no shortage of motive power or coal at ToddingtonThankyou

Brilliant video. As the owner of Joyce, the Sentinel, I'm a little biased but the 1st minute is the best footage I've ever seen of her in action.

Thanks very much, Andy. Think you can excuse yourself for the bias - it was great to see "Joyce" in action!

    Superb, thanks.
Excellent choice of thumbnail as the footage of a 'Light' and a 'Merch' double heading is very interesting, esp. the size comparison. Indeed, I imagine that combo would have been a real rarity in BR(S) days - I don't recall seeing an example in any of my Southern Region themed albums.

The size difference isn't as obvious though, the boiler of the light Pacific is just slightly smaller, but because dome and chimney have a comparable height with those of the Merchant Navy it looks like the boilers are the same size.
I guess the overall height of the Light is just a bit less, at least it does look so in the video.
Clear clues for me are the tenders however, the light has a bit lower water tank at the rear, and the number of washout plugs, 5 on the Light and 6 on the Merchant.
With the air smoothed versions I don't know the differences, as there were variations in the cladding in the same classes already.

@@Tom-Lahaye Somehow there's a gravitas with the MNs that the Lights don't have - something one can't put a finger on!

Had the duo been on time, I would've gotten away with it too. As it happens, with the pair running late, that was filmed with one of the horses breathing down the back of my neck!

That's Didbrook just north of Hayles Abbey Halt. There is a path from the Halt to Didbrook.

What's the big old house in the shot of the 9F coming into Gotherington(?) station? I've never visited the GlosWarks so am not familiar with the area. Looked on Google Maps but couldn't find it there!

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  Před 2 lety

Quite honestly, have no idea. But there are a few manors in the area, so that would be a posibility.

The plan to rename P&O was dropped due to potential confusion over indentity? Well, credit to them for that. If only others would as well. *Doesn't look in the direction of Carnforth*
