    He sounds genuinely sad about the enigma being cracked by the allies.

    A great explanation on the mechanics of something I wondered about for a long time.
    You made it very clear how to understand the workings of this very historic machine.
    Thank you very much for this video.

    Thank you so, so much for this video. It has taken me forever to figure out how an Enigma machine worked and this is the first video that has explained it well.

    Bravo! We have been to many sites offering to "explain how it works" only to find they simply demonstrate that it works, and not how! Congrats on an excellent video and the very best of luck to you!

    You might want to also describe the patchboard on the front. How that is configured makes a huge difference in the number of encoding combinations.

  • @Tonyjm11
    @Tonyjm11 Před 4 lety +6

    Where are the front plugs and it’s combination?

    • @cigmorfil4101
      @cigmorfil4101 Před 9 měsíci +1

      The front plugs come on the wires between the rotors and the keys. If nothing is inserted it just links straight through - A is connected to A, B is connected to B, etc.
      However, if a wire[1] is plugged between two letters then they are swapped. If A was steckered to B, then they are swapped:
      The A key when pressed enters the rotors as a B and the A lamp exiting fron the rotors then lights lamp B, and vice-versa.
      [1]Each letter had two sockets, an upper and lower: one being connected to the key and the other to the rotors. The wires had a plug on each end with an upper and lower pin, and the wire consisted of two wires: linking the top pin at one end to the lower pin at the other. When no plug was inserted the upper socket of a letter was connected to its lower socket.

    I know how enigma works. But how do you use it? Like did you reset it after every message? How did they keep it all organized?? I haven’t ever found a video explaining that.

    • @Passennato24
      @Passennato24 Před 2 lety

      Yes they did. There was a code book that was issued to German military that told operators for every each day of the month what rotors to use, and how to set them. Same for the plugboard. Each day they switched to the new configuration as per the code book.
      I also read that sometimes the senders would send messages instructing the receiver to use an alternate rotor configuration than the one in the code book for that day, making those messages even more difficult to decrypt.

    • @cigmorfil4101
      @cigmorfil4101 Před 9 měsíci

      @@Passennato24
      There were different setup books for different cryptonets. This meant they could send messages across a common radio net but only those with the relevant settings could teas them.
      Apparently they used a 3 character discriminant to define which setup they were using.
      If a message had to be sent across two different cryptonets it would require the "bridge" to decrypt the message in its original settings and re-encrypt it in the new settings. This aided the breaking of the settings if one setting was broken, they had a complete message to find the settings on the other net; by not rephrasing the message between the two different nets the Germans gave a wedge into some settings.

    It is still somewhat difficult to understand, but this video made it Moore clear for me, thanks :). Like the electrical diagrams with it. It intriges me still the Germans where not stupid. Only little bit dumb let’s so to say. :). But is all history we are friends now. But it has brought allot of new tech possible. Name Braun and rockets etc.. so ok how bad it was. There is something coming good out of all ww2 shit etc. Well I’m shure most German people never wanted this also. But ok it is a WW2 etc. And there where some nasty things going on with Hitler. But ok the tech evolved allot faster. Not that I want sort of a thing now a days again. :)
