*Disclaimer (before the keyboard warriors tear my comments up 😂): Yes, I'm glad I have my degree and I worked REALLY hard for it....and worked even harder to pay off the debt. But, when it comes to this certain siltation, it doesn't serve me.

What do you wish you had known when you first started homeschooling?

That homeschool is not the same as public school. It should be fun not super structured. And there is no one perfect curriculum!
Going into my second year homeschooling my 1st grader and my first year homeschooling my 8th grader!🙌 Last year I got so overwhelmed about which curriculum to buy that I wasted so much time finding the “right” curriculum because I didn’t want to screw up my kid.😆 It stressed me out so bad! I finally got hit with the reality that I can’t do any worse than the system. I was public schooled so it’s really hard to get out of that mind set. I struggle with it daily but have learned to relax and enjoy doing things differently. I also enjoy being the teacher and being so involved with some subjects like Bible. We all learn together and build stronger bonds. I can already see a difference in how my 13 year old is treating his younger brother. He’s always been a sweet brother but I can see their bond getting stronger 😊

Yes yes yes another previous teacher here. If i deschooled a month per year of my education (including k-12, college, and years of teaching), we'd be deschooling forever! I need to deschool my brain but I don't know what to do while deschooling. Also.... the micromanaging thing especially with how distracted we all get in my household.
Also i feel like i manage or have to fight off/deal with trivial things all day long while trying to get homeschooling done

We are doing 30 minutes per class. It does not take all day to teach in homeschool, so cool! If a curriculum is working for the child, keep it. We have stayed with the same curriculum, and it is keeping my son on track with the same teaching style without changing. If something seems like it is not working, find a way to teach it in the way it works for your homeschool.

Good video. I wish I would have known in the beginning how hard it is on the children when you switch curriculums. This is my 3rd year of homeschooling and I have changed curriculum a lot.

I love this; so true about time over quantity. Homeschool is so cool!

One thing to realize with any curriculum at home is that it's not necessary to rigidly follow every part of it! Your child learning is the goal- not following a program & checking off the instructions.
They don't have to master every detail of everything either! Do they learn how to read, write, ( well! This one's most important!) basics of grammar, etc. Do math, & not hate it? History should be so easy, bc all kids love stories. If they dislike it it's probably bc they're struggling with reading.
Science? FIELD TRIPS! Actual experiments & again, history, of famous scientists & the contributions they made can inspire & motivate them. It doesn't have to be by the book! If they can learn well & enjoy it up through elementary they'll embrace it going forward & your job becomes much easier.

I would’ve told myself to relax and while goal setting is great.. don’t get worked up and create a stressful home atmosphere if all your (super high expectation) goals aren’t being met exactly on schedule. Always make time for relationship with each child. No educational resource or goal is above relationship.

I'm in the trenches with this right now. Except we went from Sonlight to TGTB, which on paper shouldn't be so different. However, in practice, it feels like I went from being a school librarian who read aloud all day to being a full time arts and crafts teacher. The kid is adjusting okay but I don't know if I'm going to make it. I impulse bought Masterbooks last night in case I can't do it again 😂

We use Abeka videos. We are in grades 5th and 7th. I keep wanting to try something different because our day is so long, but I'm still not confident enough to leave Abeka altogether. I've really been thinking about using Fix it Grammar because we hate diagramming, lol. This is our 4th year homeschooling. I love your videos!

I would love to know what you had to unlearn as a former teacher? I am feeling fairly unqualified to teach today so it's reassuring to hear this video!

  • @bu2ful119

Fellow former teacher here. I was so misguided by the education system about what is best for kids. Now that God is my guide I'm getting it. My 60k education does nothing for me now. I'm happier at home with my kids.
My daughter will work independently and is dedicated. My son just wants to cuddle all day and will not work on his own.

Hmm. I guess I could wish I'd had more confidence in myself to teach my kids. I got Abeka's videos and full program last year for my twins to do K with, and was surprised by how much busy work a "classroom experience" involves. I was one of those homeschooled unicorns back in the 80s, so I had no prior experience with elementary ed. Since I loathe busywork, this year we're continuing to use Abeka's language arts stuff and math, but everything else I ditched, including the vids. Instead, I've added the 1st grader bible and history of the church from Generations and am doing the Good and the Beautiful's two kid-friendly science programs for littles. I would never have made it, trying to manage 30 kids, their parents, an admin and all that goes into teaching in a school, but this I can do. And yes, the hours it takes in a day is a fraction of what kids do in an institution, because there's two of them... ;)

Since the pandemic hit 3 years ago, my friends and I have been doing face-to-face homeschooling lessons and online teaching from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.
The curriculum used was based on government policy, at that time using the 2013 curriculum. The learning that we do is only an application intermediary, because face-to-face meetings are not permitted, even though it is done Monday to Friday.
Yes, you know, 4 hours of teaching was very tiring, especially when you have to wear a mask and keep your distance from one another.
Now it's normal, but starting in the evening, 6 pm to 8 pm. If your teaching technique there, how?

I totally disagree about being a teacher not being helpful. I taught public and private school in 2 states and 2 countries and qualify to be K-8 principal in 2 states. I have researched SO MUCH curriculum and have used so many programs that I feel that I know well what works and what doesn't. I have always hated the American education system and even advocated for Montessori and homeschool during the 22 years I was teaching in public school. Teaching 100s of kids definitely gives me an edge with teaching my own one. Still, I do agree that parents are their kids' best teachers 9x out of 10. Feed them clean whole foods and zero junk. Expose them to many things. Involve them in all you do. Teach them to know Jehovah and follow the example of Jesus in their daily lives. Do not let school be stressful. Keep it slightly challenging and very enjoyable. Use Orton Gillingham methods of instruction.

Okay? Condescending much? Everyone has different styles of teaching and different experiences. Your comment sounds like you’re trying to be above everyone with your “expertise “. Chill. She made an excellent video with really great points.
