  • @jeffrey3895
    @jeffrey3895 Před rokem +2

    Whilst it is true that sand is automatically dispensed when a slip is detected, by that point it is too late for the sand to take maximum effect. The whole point of using sand is to prevent a slip from occurring in the first place. The effectiveness of sand is dependent on the tram being driven in accordance with prevailing track conditions and the driver's awareness and action in dispensing sand by manual activation and also by ensuring the sand flow is not impeded by blocked pipes which happens when the pipes are not routinely checked as often as prior to departure from the terminus on each run during inclement weather.

    • @TheLostProbe
      @TheLostProbe Před 11 měsíci

      I'm guessing it's mainly because there are a lot of trams in the fleet. like, right now there's 493 of them, and in 2025 they're gonna add another 100 next-generation trams to the fleet. so that many trams means a lot of sand

      the newer E-class trams and the upcoming G-class ones do have more wheels, unlike the older ones. problem is that the older ones make up a huge portion of the fleet, so removing them would cause big issues all over the network. they're hoping to phase out the Z-class and A-class trams with the 100 G-class trams they've ordered to be delivered by 2025, and the E-class ones have allowed for quite a few older ones to be retired, but not enough

    • @Sagealeena
      @Sagealeena Před rokem +1

      Electric busses have much lower capacity than trams (our current trams coming in over the last ten years have capacity for 210 people). Rubber on asphalt (busses) is also much less efficient than steel on steel (trams). There’s a reason Melbourne has kept its tram network! We have way too many people using the tram network and busses couldn’t cater to the same number of people

    • @ghost307
      @ghost307 Před rokem

      @@Sagealeena I agree, but comparing a single bus (that seats 50 people and also has lots of standing room) to a multi-car tram of indeterminate length is not quite a fair comparison.
      Actually, my comment was intended to point out to other people that focusing on a solution to a single problem without considering other factors tends to lead into trouble.
      For example, if the problem is airplanes that crash and that is the ONLY thing that is to be considered, then building taxiways to connect every airport in the country would solve it. Of course, that's a ridiculously extreme example but I think it highlights the fallacy of treating any single problem in a vacuum.
      Everything in the real world is a compromise...there is no such thing as a 'perfect solution'.
