    sounds like yall used your boots for actual work and not just fashion whereas these boots seem like fashion focused that you can still do work in. Im really glad for the somewhat negative review because all the other reviews were so positive it was hard to find where in that fashion-function spectrum these boots fit.

      I saw another review that mentioned they may not be good heavy duty work boots because the heel cap is more flexible for comfort and doesn't have a rigid inner piece of leather like some work boots do. But I just got my pair of Captains today and will mostly be using them for casual or work at the shop. I got the ones with the, idk comando?, sole. It has treads on the bottom. Two colors (whiskey and tobacco) have the different rubber sole on them and may make better work boots.

      I'd recommend investing in a pair of Alden 405 (calf skin) or Alden 403 (Horwin Crome Excel). The arch support is excellent, whereas in my Iron Rangers caused me to develop plantar facitis. So please stay away from Iron Rangers and Wolverine 1k. Try Alden, Nick's, or Whites instead.

    These boots are not advertised as being “work boots” so with a little (very little) research you could determine whether these Thursday Boots are the right ones for you. Still, at $200 they will be more than good enough for most people who are looking for value in a general-purpose boot. Boots also require a certain amount of care to maintain and these two “reviewers” did not present any indication that they did so. I think they each got their money’s worth considering how they used these boots. Nice to see the experience of two regular guys. Worth the view. Cheers.

    I like the in depth one year review concept, but I'd take this one with a grain of salt. I'm no Thursday fanboy. I've heard all about the quality control issues, and to me there's just something off about the silhouette anyway, so I'll probably never buy a pair. Regardless, there are some red flags in this review: First, they mentioned the rugged & resilient leather which you "don't really have to take care of", and it certainly looks like they haven't. Even on the toughest Nick's or White's work boots designed to last forever, there is no such thing as leather that you don't need to take care of. Their uppers both look to be in desperate need of some TLC.
    They also mentioned briefly that they could be resoled, but from how they talked throughout the video, it doesn't seem like they have much interest in that. Not only CAN they be resoled, but they're DESIGNED to be resoled, not just worn until they wear out and then thrown away. I'll definitely concede that the sole pulling off after 4 months is premature. If you work a casual boot like a work boot all day, every day, it's not unthinkable. In their case, it sounds like it was a QC thing. I'm glad that Thursday stood behind the boot and replaced it. However, a sole wearing out and pulling away after a year of consistent wear is not crazy at all, especially for how it sounds like they wear them (the guy on the right in particular).
    They mentioned the boot not being worth it if you need to buy a new pair every year, but I would urge them to just care for their leather (the uppers will last a long time if they do) and have them resoled when the sole starts to wear out or pull away, and you won't have to buy a new pair for years to come. Odds are, a good cobbler will use real Dainite soles (longer wear than the no-brand factory soles) and do better work than the factory, so the subsequent resoles will last longer than the originals. Quality footwear is a long term investment that pays for itself over many years, not a one time-expense. Are there better built boots out there for a little more, or even the same amount of money? Definitely! But I don't think you can fault a product for not being something it isn't designed to be. Just an enthusiast's two cents.

    • @TheMapleReview
      @TheMapleReview  Před 3 lety +4

      Forrest- this was cute. Mike has not treated his uppers at all. Thursday Specifically says: "To clean these leathers, you can spray the Leather Cleaner and use a clean Microfiber Cloth to wipe them down, as well as a Premium Shoe Brush to remove any dirt on the surface.
      Because these leathers are so unique, we do not recommend applying any conditioning or protective products to them. If additional cleaning is required, we recommend visiting your local cobbler or shoe repair shop so they can handle this professionally." So All Mike did was brush them clean as he didn't feel comfortable going against the companies instructions. I on the other hand treated mine and cared for them consistently and they still look like they do. I also probably only wore mine 100-125 time in the year I had them. Also- we are interested in getting them resoled- thats not what was at question in the video. The video was about how they come from the factory. So sure buy these if you want to be forced to get your 200+ dollar boots resoled in the first 6-7 months of wear. So what "red flags" are actually valid? Because you only listed one real one which wasn't even real. But thanks for the two cents and the love on the channel.

    • @forrestmitchell0
      @forrestmitchell0 Před 3 lety +20

      @@TheMapleReview Well I stand corrected then. First, I don't know anything about you guys. I've never watched your channel. I don't know what you know or don't know, so I'm just going based on what I heard in this video.
      I admittedly don't know much about their rugged & resilient leather, but if Thursday says it doesn't need care except by a professional, I'd be very skeptical of that as a consumer. I probably know more than the average consumer about leather though, and specifically leather footwear. I'd put the blame on Thursday there if they're misleading consumers about their leather. Probably just a line they say to deny liability if the quality of the upper fails. Like I said, I've never heard of a leather that doesn't need any care, and that IS what you said in the video, so what else am I supposed to think? Likewise, you did mention having to get a new pair every year, so what else am I supposed to think about whether you're planning to resole them or not?
      Also, I'm in no way trying to stand up for the product that Thursday puts out. I have heard way too much about quality control issues there and I will never buy a pair, as I said. $200 is cheap for a Goodyear welted boot. In my opinion, a boot that needs it's first resole that soon sounds about right for the price, then it will last longer after that. That would be my expectation when buying these.
      At the end of the day, we're both trying to do the same thing: Help inform consumers to make the right decisions for their situation. You're calling out Thursday for what you feel is a sub-par product and misleading their customers, and I'm playing a little devil's advocate because, based on what you're saying in the video, I don't think you're the most qualified reviewers, which isn't a bad thing to be. They can then go seek a second opinion if they want, and it will either confirm or negate yours. The more information and opinions that are out there, the better it is for them. Maybe I'm totally wrong about you and you're both leathercraft experts and handmade shoe aficionados. My bad. Still, the more opinions, the better. I appreciate the reply too. It's great when youtubers actually participate in the discourse in their comments.
      Also thanks. I like to think I'm cute.

    Some goodyear welted boots do get glued-on soles, for instance when the sole is rubber and too thick to sew through (like Thursday's new stormking, but also Vibram commando's). what happens in this case is that a (cheap) leather mid-sole is sewn on, and then the rubber one is glued to the leather. like a lot of people have said, though, repairing sole damage on a goodyear welted boot is actually part of the process. indeed, it appears that the sole is one compromise Thursday makes (as do others, like Meermin) to sell these boots as cheap as they do. but you have the option of repairing them for cheap with a cobbler every so often, or have them entirely resoled-sure, it'll cost more money, but you can then have them built to your specifications (nice stacked-leather heels, good cork filling, thick leather mid-soles and solid vibram or dainite rubber soles) and have them take all the abuse you want and have them last a veeery long time (half a decade at least). honestly, as has already been mentioned, buying goodyear welted boots (or shoes) is all about the uppers (which you definitely need to take care of!) as such, most rugged and resilient leathers from Thursday seem to be oiled leathers, so you do need to condition them with oiled-leather conditioners. i think that's why they don't suggest people treat them: oiled leathers slowly but progressively lose their oils, and you need to re-oil them, but you should not use regular conditioners to do so. also, the intervals for re-oiling are a lot longer. that said, if the uppers keep up, and you condition them when needed, that's the measure of how long-lasting a boot is. the sole frankly is irrelevant; that's the point of buying goodyear welted shoes! for instance, leather soles on +$1k shoes can sometimes last even less than 3 months (if you use them everyday on pavement, for example), and no one would ever dare question the "quality" of the shoes because of this situation. i'll chalk the severity of your review to naivete i guess.

    If I wanted a durable, affordable work boot, I would skip boots like the Thursday & even the very popular Red Wing Iron Rangers that are more expensive. A simple work boot like the Red Wing 953 is hard to beat for the price. It's very simple in design, lightweight, and the SuperSole is very durable. It's a no nonsense made in America work boot. It looks more at home on the farm than on the city sidewalk, but I don't buy work boots for fashion. You may wear the sole down to nothing on a 953, but it's not going to fall off. I just bought my third pair for under $200 a couple weeks ago. My 2nd pair are in pretty rough shape, but they are dated 2005 inside the tongue. They have outlasted 6 or 7 other brands/pairs of work boots that I have worn alongside them. My only knock on 953 is the soles lack extreme traction, but at the same time they don''t drag in much dirt. Whenever I have any leg pain (ankles, knees, etc.) wearing the 953 makes it all go away. Some boots should be labeled dress boots not work boots. I just ordered my first pair of Thursday boots. I hope to wear them when I'm not really working. Just to clarify my point here, the 953 doesn't come in various leathers & styles like the Thursday Captain. The 953 is a work boot, not a dress boot like the Thursday Captain boot with the fake toe cap!

      I wouldn't listen to them. Their boots should never be looking the way they are. With the way they've clearly neglected them, a pair of Iron Rangers would've faired the same. You need to care for a boot -- not baby them, but care for them. That's the nature of leather. If you want a boot you can sort of ignore, choose a pair of Nicks or a firefighter boot. That'll cost you over $400, but that's the only boot you can "neglect." And you'll still have to care for it from time to time, or else it'll fall apart as well.

    the rubber separating from the shoe could be that the stitching that holds them together doesnt sit in a channel when stitched together, if you go to a cobbler and get them to resole, they probs will cut a channel I to the rubber and the put the stitching inside so you aren't walking on that stitching.
    Out of the box the stitching can fray and detach but after your first resole it should be solid.
    Also thursday boots are known for having the heel stack very solidly put on, many cobbler vids will say so.

    I got two pairs from Thursday, both were disappointing, first pair the tongue has given me issues but honestly not bad for a first boot. Got that first pair in a size 8 and fit perfectly fine. A couple years later I ordered a black Matte from their rugged and resilient line in size 8 as well (same style as first: captain) and they were more snug. Now this is partially my fault because I thought I just needed to break them in and then my toes wouldn’t be so pressed up against the front. A coupe of painful months go by and they’re still uncomfortable. I email them and ask them if they changed the last and they said they did but that most customers didn’t notice so I shouldn’t either essentially. 1 year later I have that black pair in a closet untouched , definitely not buying boots from them again.

    These aren't work boots, they are dress boots. Dress boots that can handle so rough treatment.
    Many modern lifestyles have people buy one pair of shoes or boots and wear then everyday, all the time, until they fall apart. Often never given any care, cream, or polish. Quality boots should be rotated, which means wear for a couple of days, a week even, and then swop for another shoe. Given some care products and a shoe tree they can rest; which will give them longer life. Basically have more than one pair of shoes/boots.
    Work boots up to the job of work all look ugly and don't pull the girls. Real work boots worked hard rarely last more than two years anyhow, and the ones that do are over engineered, costly, and heavy. Few people need those hard core work boots, safety boots, unless the job demands it.
    Old vid. What boots is all about fit. Thursday boots have found a niche, and I like.

      I use regular Cedar shoe trees on my Captains, I think boot shoe trees are better for longer boots but not needed. I will say use cedar or beechwood shoe trees over plastic to better absorb and deodorize your boots and shoes. Another good tip, rotate your boots and shoes, for better results try to give each pair a good 24 hours between use.

    The real thing is: are cheap boots, and that's it, with expensive boots better quality, after one year are more than ok, Grant Stone are better quality and still cheap. Affordable, longer-lasting are Grant Stone. Want something better Nick´s boots are cheaper than Viberg and amazing boots. Other brands offer good quality. Try to stay away from Thursday boots.

    That's a goodyear welt, no boot would've faired how you've neglected yours. Clearly you haven't been taking care of them. It's leather -- you need to take care of leather. A $4,000 boot would've faired the exact same with how you've clearly neglected your pairs.

      This makes no sense lol… the leather is fine…. It’s the sole that’s messed up

    Don't fall for the marketing. Do anything other than wear to the occasional dinner and these boots will disintegrate on you.
