Every deaf person I have met so far in the UK that has signed has known BSL. They could possibly have learned ASL as well, but I would be willing to say I'm certain ASL is not more commonly used in Britain. When they have an interpreter on the TV, it's in BSL, not ASL. There's a deaf charity called SignHealth, all of their videos are in BSL, not ASL. When I'm given promotional materials and there's a signed version, it's in BSL, not ASL. The NHS 111, 119, and 999 relay services all use BSL interpreters, not ASL. Deaf people are incredibly protective of their sign language. I highly doubt they'd be willing to just chuck out BSL and start using ASL instead. Did you see the recent rallys? Deaf people have been out in droves fighting for their language.
