    Hey there Woody, ordered my PSR-S970 today after watching all your videos and how much fun your having with it. Love the way it sounds and the way you play. The only difference is i have to first learn how to play! LOL. Have a "Merry Xmas and Happy New Year".

    I have the PSR-S770, this keyboard's little brother and it's also fantastic. Sound quality is just the same between the two, apart from the slightly reduced amount of preset soundbanks on the 770. 970 holds a lot of new sounds from the Tyros 4/5, while 770 contains all the sounds from the previous PSR-S950 and Tyros 3

    Thanks for doing this demo. I purchased (not too long ago) a Yamaha PSR - 453 but had been researching the workstation keyboards. The PSR - 453 is a quarter or less of the price of this one. So far, it has been more than enough for my purpose. Interesting to hear your initial reaction to the build quality. I find that the PSR-453 is about the same but has a great digital engine and, for me, that is more than enough.

    Very fair evaluation Woody. Agree with you on the Spectrumesque squidginess of the buttons, although it doesn't affect the playing experience too much IMO. In terms of features and non-physical aspects, I think the S770 represents fantastic value for money. I too would have happily paid a bit more for better quality buttons and keys, but that might impact Tyros sales ? Whatever.

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  Před 8 lety +1

      agree on all points. in hindsight my critique of the keybed ("shit") was harsh. in use it's not too bad and the quality is fine. However it is extremely light with shallow travel. it's the reason there are a lot of bum notes in my demos. but the camera captured my initial disappointment, I was a lost for words.

    Actually if you have noticed, the PSR keyboard is a Hybrid mix of the Yamaha's Organ and the synthesiser. PSR Keyboards only have 61 keys and the instrumental replica is of a lower grade compared to Tyros synthesisers. All PSR keyboard models are more of a quick and easy, less fuss instrument for performing nearly instantly. I use the PSR for fun songs, while the organ for serious stuff. The PSR has limitations and can't do what the Stagea organs can, we have bass pedals. The Tyros and the Stagea organ requires more programming. Also, Tyros is a premium category of true synthesisers that went thru evolution adapting The organ's gadgets. The modern Stagea Els-02c is the equivalent of the Tyros 5 series. The organ has 2 or 3 keyboard layers. Synthesiser originally do not have electronic percussion. Should view one of the Japanese players, Star Wars, that will really impress you. That lady's performance made my jaw drop. Anyway I still liked your video for information on new keyboards. It Costs SGD2,459 .40 inclusive of Keyboard Stand and Bench, not forgetting the sustain Yamaha FC4A pedals. Approx GBP1,368.80 or USD1,709.43 in Pricing for a Brand New, Non Demo set. Anyway I still liked watching your video for information on new keyboards. Nice if you would perform on this keyboard for us... I would be great! Cheers!

    There should at least be 2 holes in the top of every keyboard and they would fit a standard sized music stand (the keyboard manufacturers can decide on the dimentions). I hereby offer that idea free to every keyboard manufacturer. I will start a company manufacturing a few different stiles of standard keyboard music stands.

    Sorry for the late comment on this one, Woody, but I couldn't agree more about the keyboard action. It's a shame that they use the same keyboard type on their top arranger PSR workstations as on their budget keyboards. The only Yamaha arranger keyboard with playable key action is the Tyros/Genos, but the sound quality and functionality of the PSR-S9X0/7X0 is worthy of a good key action as well. I'm an Electone (Yamaha electronic organ) player myself, and these instruments always come with high quality keyboard action, so it was a big surprise to me when I first tried a PSR-S9X0.

    Ha Woody, I'm surprised you went with this choice for that type of playing after touting Nords as you have, I love mine too. If you wind up giving the Yamaha the boot have you looked into the Roland Jupiter 50? I got to mess around with one out here and it was pretty fun and didn't feel cheep to me. Naturally it's not in the same league with the Nord but still good and for the dollars it seems it would be a great addition to your stable, just food for thought.

    I have owned s970 for about 2 years. It compares with a Tyros 3-4. I own a Tyros first generation since 2003. Your review is Yamaha bashing.
    If you want higher quality then for about 4,000.00 more get a Yamaha Clavinova CLP 665 you get wood keys. The difference is this. Do you want furniture? Or do you want sounds for your ears. If you are shopping for furniture then spend 4,000 more. Musicians look for sound and performance. The s970 into a 300watt amp will fill any room with awesome sound. The Clavinova has a big amp and is a Tyros in a piece of furniture. S970 will be replaced by 2020. Yamaha has about a 3 year run on a keyboard. When you get a big watt amp you can change Keyboards, but you will always have the amp to use no matter what keyboard you select.

    I have just unboxed my psr s 970 and the first impressions were the white keys are lighter then the black kays also the white keys are making a DONG plastic noise like there were no robber pads or not thick enough underneath them...the black keys are perfectly ok for being what it is same what I had on my psr 3000...
    QUESTION?
    Mine is an ex demo form Normann keyboards. Is it something what is normal on the psr s 970?
    by the way every white keys make this horribly sensation on my keyboard so its not one or two....
    please help me!

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  Před 8 lety

      i would agree with you about the light white keys, they are super light and a contributing factor to the bum notes in some of my demos. but i haven't noticed any clonky noise on mine, but I often have the volume quite high when I'm playing, that's one solution! I've read some forum posts though with complaints about this, so it's not just yours.

  • @WildernessMusic_GentleSerene

    I missed this review, thanks for this. I have 4 keyboards with built in speakers, the speakers are total crap, I think the speakers are there for beginners ears only. Even a cheap computer speaker for $50 would sound better. Sennheiser headphones or near fields are my listening devices. So do the 970's speakers sound as good as a cheap set of near fields...like a PreSonus Eris E3.5 for example?
    By the way I am reviewing a Korg MicroArranger using a Yamaha weighted 88 keyboard MIDIed in as a controller. This Korg is an incredible value, full of Korg Triton sounds and MIDI/5pinDIN connections! Affordable for me at $500.00.

  • @guybloy6504

    Hi Woody,
    I hope you're fine. I ordered a PSR S 970 yesterday and I can't wait to receive it and play it. As you said, the keys are pretty bad. I would like to keep my old Solton MS 50 ( now Ketron) and use it as a keyboard controller because the width is slightly superior (84,7cm for all the 36 white keys against 82,7 cms), which allows to reduce "typing errors" ah ah..
    Yamaha is the only manufacturer to propose so narrow keyboards(cf Ketron, Roland, etc...).
    it would be great if you could tell us how to connect two keyboards using MIDI and how to connect them to a mixing console in order to play different voices coming out of the two keyboards...
    Cheers from France,
    Guy

      @WoodyPianoShack  Před 6 lety

      bonjour, congrats on the 970! i was a bit harsh on the keys, they are very light action, but not terrible quality, I think they will last, but you're right, many modern keyboards have slightly smaller keys, combined with the very light weight and shallow travel I play lots of typo mistakes when playing! good suggestion, i'd like to do more videos with the old psr

    $ 2,000 is a bit expensive for a keyboard with such bad keys. However the voices and styles sound pretty nice.

    jews in camden are telling me that "arranger keyboards are illegal here in camden" (part of london)....they are very low tech here, "mixed swimming" is also banned in camden (they have separate "mens and ladies swimming ponds", the only such ponds on earth....not even taliban could invent that kind of fun....but funniest of all is that jews are currently being evicted from uk....nevertheless, on their way out - they are still passionately dedicated to their (illegally imposed) ban on arranger keyboards and "mixed swimming" in camden...LOL!
