I watched this video on my lunch break and immediately returned to work and asked the Vice President to mentor me. He accepted my request and shared on a personal note mentoring is one of the things he enjoys most personally about his job/position with the company. Thank you for extending an exemplary guideline for seeking out the best mentors for oneself. You and your video gave me the confidence to finally take action after nearly 3 years of contemplation.

I enjoy being a mentor but no one knows I exist...and those that know me don't usually reach out to me...I have many people I look up to so many mentors...including you now...thanks to my school for having me watch your video....don't put all your eggs in one basket (all your hope into one mentor) It's a huge responsibility for just one human. Though humans make mistakes and that's how humans learn best...being let down by someone because of their mistakes is one thing but voicing the situation in a negative light helps no one find a solution to fix the mistake and sometimes it takes multiple mistakes before a proper resolution is found, so be patient. while one way of doing things works for some but sometimes its a jagged puzzle piece trying to fit in a rounded piece puzzle, don't get discouraged, there is one way for you, you just got to hang in there and keep trying...there is no such thing as one way to do things

I LOVE the idea of mentorship. My first mentrix ever - Colette Garside - read my Aura-Soma level 4 diploma thesis. She was so great! She encouraged me in oh so many ways. I discovered that - if I looked at myself through HER eyes - I was finally able to look at me without judging and I started to love what I saw.
Now (17 years later) I am a mentor for many years and I truly love it.
YES! And there is a flipside advantage too: it blows your mind if you see how much a mentor can learn from his/her students.
New input, new wisdom, new courage guaranteed.
And yes - nowadays I have wonderful mentors all around the world without having to travel ONE kilometer ;-)
Even Stronger: When I do my exercises in the morning, I watch the brightest mentors on the row at Evan Carmichael's CZcams top 10 and all of Marie's video's too.
The best is always in the end when Marie says: ...'because the world needs that special gift that only you have' 👍

Thanks Marie, I was so obsessed with the idea of finding a mentor thinking it would set me up for life but your video opened my eyes to that fact that this idea of finding one physical mentor was holding me back as it became an excuse to do nothing. I now know that I should consider finding inspiration and learning from people I don't even know personally. I also realised that you're right, it's not really healthy to just be listening to just one person, it's better to listen to at least a few more, try it out and see what works for you. Thanks again Marie, your videos are really good as they enable me to listen because they are just the right length of time, it is lively and it's obviously been made with sincere effort. Best Regards.

I was burning for hearing the answer to this question. Marie, she's such an inspiration to me + her whole business and I was struggling in finding and asking for mentorship. That's true that if you follow and truly care about the content of your inspirational leader in your world, you'll learn a lot because they already work a lot to put what they know noticed.
The only downside of not having a mentor is that you cannot learn exactly about your situation. I feel like if you find someone that truly connects with what you want to do, you want to learn the most on how they managed their life up to now (including the struggles they had to get where they are today and you compare it with yours). Having specific information directed to you VS general concepts is different. Since in most cases we get general topics, you're still not getting the content you'd like (unless it's a true guidance A-Z, often shown as a coaching program, and it's RARE to get excellent teaching). The main point in having information out there, it isn't always enough to get through what you want. Mentorship at least gives you correction on what was wrong and you can have a direct link with your questions, and help you wonder about things you didn't thought before, helping you grow instantly (and mostly, it helps you get a direct human interaction).
Just wanted to share this thought, having a mentor is crucial to grow faster. As an example, I would love to ask Marie for mentorship because I have specific but really personal questions about the building-up process side of the business. I would love to get her honest insight, an interview with her or something, that's not what you can get anywhere else, and that's the principal reason having a mentor is essential. :)

That was amazing advice. But like you said, the most difficult part of finding a mentor is just finding someone with the knowledge and experience you seek who isn't already busy doing their own contributions to the world. I suppose what holds back some people is either finding a mentor who is willing to hold your hand or one who will give you a kick in the butt to get moving.

I think about the importance of mentorship all the time, and this advice on how to find a mentor is so actionable--thanks for this video, Marie! I'm excited to share it. I often hear prospective mentees, like Kat, feeling shy ("would they even have time for me?") On the flip side, once I even heard a prominent author say he didn't believe in mentorship because it was "pro bono life coaching" --fortunately I have not found a lot of people who think that way. But in either case, the point that's missing is this: Mentorship is a two-way street! Mentors gain a lot of insight, and even confidence, from helping a mentee...it helps them realize their strengths and reflect on how much they've learned. So don't feel shy about asking for mentorship. Done right, it's mutually beneficial. Marie is totally right on the importance of being specific. It's also so important to bring things full circle and let your mentors know the outcomes of your challenges. Finally, Marie, you are the ultimate example of mentoring people you've never met--and we all admire you for that, especially at She's the First!

One really good tip on how to turn a loosely-connected contact into a stronger mentor: tell them how much you value their mentorship. That's right! Telling someone you appreciate them for a quality you want to encourage is a really good hack that often gets them to do more of that, without having to ask.
Listen to podcasts and youtube videos for how often you get thanked for being a loyal listener or subscriber -- this is the same tactic.
    Try it out!

Marie- I've been a silent fan for a couple of years now, and this episode inspired me to thank you!! I've been wondering this exact question, and your answers brought me relief; I already saw my favorite thought leaders, like you and Brendon Burchard, as mentors, but I was concerned I was majorly missing out by not having an official in-person guru. Its so inspiring to find a woman like Marie Forleo who is first and foremost a hilarious personality but she's also wise and fascinating to listen to. I have only just met her through the Jon & Missy Butchers Life Book Library but thank you so much for sharing this take on Mentorship. I totally agree with everything you are saying. I also don't believe that One Mentor can give you everything. I first discovered Mentorship 3 years ago with a man called Kane Minkus who gives Entrepreneurs many insightful tools to run their Business more successfully. He introduced me to Vishen Lakhiani from MindValley who came to Singapore which led me to discover Jon & Missy Butcher (LifeBook), Lisa Nichols (Speak & Inspire) and many others. All of these people have changed my life in different ways. I am also reaching out to my community in Singapore through a Womens network called Prime Time KeyNote speakers where I am learning & Practicing the Art of Speaking Publicly. Its very true that reaching out to your local community and finding those around you that you can learn from is also very powerful. Just started my own Mastermind group with 3 female entrepreneurs so my path is filled with Wisdom, Learning & Inspiration. I encourage anyone out there to do the same and follow the wise words that Marie outlines above. I am Kim Maxwell from www.thisis-yourstory.com

Totally agree! I've never thought of having a mentor, it seemed restrictive but I am often influenced, guided, helped, inspired, motivated and so much more but various individuals I come across in life. I talk with them, share ideas with them, read about them, learn about their lives, watch documentaries, look at their work or simply live with them in the case of family and friends. Having a single mentor to me feels like it would create a 'follower' rather than a 'leader'. Be inspired and motivated by others but forge your own path! Great video :) P.S Love your dress!

I'm a mentor to hundreds over my 17 year career as a makeup artist. I totally agree--be engaged with the person you want to mentor. If you don't it feels very disingenuous--and just a, give-me-all-your-information- so-I-can-suck-the-life-out-of-you, kind of situation--lol. I wrote a book (very successful) , I Periscope, I blog and now I'm on CZcams teaching my fellow fab makeup artists all about the business of--well, being a makeup artists. Great video as always! I've been blessed to have many mentors in my life and to pay it forward to many now. The best advice as a mentee is to find many mentors, as you mentioned, because it's not fair to expect perfection from one person. You'll be more well-rounded by surrounding yourself with many great people. The best advice for mentors is to take your time and learn about the mentee. Understanding the psychology of the mentee will help you so much down the road. The relationship shouldn't be a parent-child one, give your mentee much credit for their eagerness and believe it or not, you'll learn a lot from them as well.

@marieforleo I certainly agree with you entirely. Mentors are everywhere and they come in all shapes and forms. We just need to look and see who we can learn from, and the how can be in many ways that you discussed here. You for sure, have been a mentor to me for years, I find you fresh and wise and I relate to you and learn effectively from you. Thank you for being my mentor Marie!
As always thank you to your team as well for such an awesome upload! Can't wait for the next one!
