I think they're the best implementation of the false 9 of all time & that they definitely played the best football. However, some of the personnel in the squad could have been improved upon had Guardiola been more shrewd, at that time, in the transfer market & considering players in the academy. The squad could boast more graduates from La Masia such as getting rid of Abidal in his clear out the season before & never signing Adriano. Then resigning Alba & promoting Grimaldo, signing Iñigo Martinez and promoting Bartra to understudy & eventually succeed Puyol & Piqué, and lastly, signing Neymar & promoting Icardi to understudy & eventually succeed Suårez & Pedro. It is wishful thinking but imagine if Neymar & Suårez played under Guardiola!

Other things that made this Barcelona so special :
    - Xavi and Iniesta on their peak, total midfield control
    - Barcelona back then was more HUMBLE, something that this Barcelona urgently needs
    - Key signings that help the team on key moments, not just players to bench them
    - Carles Puyol always puts the team in order, he is a symbol of respect and perhaps the greatest Barcelona captain of all time
    - Messi was just one more player to complete the team, now he is pretty much the entire team with Ter Stegen.

Tactical formation was another part of success. The big success comes from Xavi & Iniesta holding and not losing.
Where comes Messi deadly run and never losing the ball against 3-4 Opponents which exploit the opposition Defence which led to Goals or Score himself.
At Defensive Midfielder Busquest is immune to Pressure as for all Mid players.
Pedro and David Villa had to just keep their position and be effective.
Dani Alves finding space is just intelligent.
    That was the whole success.

In those years, from 2008 to 2012, FC Barcelona had won everything thanks to a great coach called Pep Guardiola. He had developed his tactical idea and philosophy for the cules. He had many youngsters from La Masia like Sergio Busquets, Pedrito Rodriguez, Sergi Roberto, Thiago Alcantara and Gerard Pique. Also he had improved some great players tactically, technically, mentally and physically such as Leo Messi employed in a new forward position called falso nueve. This was one of greatest success for FC Barcelona alongside the season 2014/2015 success with Luis Enrique and the outstanding trio MSN. FORÇA BARÇA

What I noticed this season, especially in the El Clasico 5 - 0 win, Barca played in attack with Abidal as the Left CB, Puyol, as the Central CB and Pique as the Right CB.
-Villa would stay out wide in the left. Dani Alves would stay out wide in the right.
-The midfield trio would stay the same but with Iniesta leaning a little bit more to the left than usual.
-Pedro would be moving more into the Center in order to plant both opposition CB but would also be leaning to the right.
-Messi, however would have a lot of freedom and would often make a Diamond with the midfield in order to have superiorites in numbers.
These tactics would make the opposition almost impossible to counter because Barca would occupy almost the complete pitch. So the would always end up finding a way to to attack. Either through the wings and playing drive crosses or playing inside with the wingers stretching the opposition in order for Busquets, Iniesta, Xavi, and Messi to shine through the middle with they extraordinary tecnique, while having 3 players like Abidal, Puyol, Pique as players were very good with the ball but at defending, they were phenomenal with high line of defence very well organized.
For me, this has been the best team that has ever played football, even though they didn't won the Copa del Rey.

Very good! I love that period of barcelona
But there is one missing point that was nice. When the team had the ball, dani alves had a full right side to run and press the other team left wing. When that happend abidal went closer defensively and the team becomes 3 defenders (abidal-pique-puyol) while dani was going to the last third of the field to do his assists. as if it was a 3-4-3
Also Pedro was a fundamental part of the team as a player with the lowest quality he understood exactly his job, being a versatile forward for any kind of situation with the ideia of being always an auxiliar or a complement.

While it lasted it was beautiful, genuis, dominating possession and something new and different which was never seen before. Now its time to move on and need a big revolution on the very structure of the club by torning and scraping up this old out dated and inefficient structure that has been helding the club and it's pride for more than it should ; and built a new phenomenon that world rightfully expects from club like a Football club Barcelona. Well, it's been so long now that I barely remember the exact tactics of Guardiola's Barça, though I probably should as we (Man United) got our asses handed to us in the UCL by them.
Call it nitpicking, however, didn't they have their full back (FB) and wing back (WB) on the left and right repsectively a bit higher than that? As far as I recall, they were placed higher, so that they would always have their tiki-taka triangles, whether when being pressed or on the attack.
As showed, the centre backs (CB) would drop deep and wide to support Valdes, but the FB and WB would only drop to 'traditional' position for their respective roles, with Busquettes dropping from deep-lying playmaker (DLP) to almost (if not completely) a half-back (HB) or even a high-line CB at times when pressed and then return to a DLP during build-up play, while the FB and WB would usually stay as high as the flow of the game would allow. Or do I remember this wrong or miss something in the video?
I know it's just a schematic to show the principals, but they always played for those untouchable triangles.

I've always felt Barcelona had a lot of luck with how well Mascherano adapted to center-back. He was signed to offer an alternative to Busquets because the team had problems when he wasn't at top level. Instead he had to cover for Puyol in Pep's scheme of "one technical center-back, one physical center-back" being the perfect companion to Piqué. To the point he almost never played again as a defensive midfield at Barça while still playing that position with Argentina.

      @thuo1000 Pƙed 3 lety +2

Pep's Man City are quite similar yet very different from Pep's Barcelona. The similarities is that both teams employ strict Positional Play, where players are drilled on their positions and adopt various positions based on where the ball is. The biggest difference is how Pep uses his fullbacks at City in comparison to his Barca team. At City, he has made use of the inverted fullbacks. This means the fullbacks drop into midfield to provide more central support when Man City are in possession. Remember Pep lines up with a 4-3-3 on paper that transforms into a 2-3-5 when City have possession. So the wingers stay wide to create half-spaces while the 2 attacking midfielders (david silva as Lm and de bryune as Rm) attack those half-spaces. Then the 2 fullbacks come drop into midfield (inverted fullbacks) as the new Lm and Rm. Pep has also transformed Aguero from a traditional striker into a false 9. We see Aguero dropping deep to link up play with the midfield under Guardiola.
Also another difference between Pep's city and Pep's barca is build up play. So when City is playing against a team that likes to press high up the pitch like Liverpool, Pep usually instructs his left back (zinchenko) to drop into midfield alongside the cdm (gundogan or rodri) temporarily. Remember City's cdm is being tightly marked, so what dropping the left back into midfield alongside the cdm does is that it creates a 2v1 advantage to City against the opponent player marking the City's cdm and thus City are able to build up play successfully. So in the example of Liverpool that press very intensely, they press in a 4-3-3 formation. So this means Liverpool wingers are pressing City's fullbacks. Salah is marking City's left back while Mane is marking City's right back, so by dropping the Left back into midfield temporarily during build up play, Salah is confronted by 2 choices. He can either decide to follow City's Left back into midfield or not to follow him. So if Salah decides to follow City's Left back into midfield, it leaves a perfect passing angle to City's left winger (sterling). This is why Guardiola instructs his wingers to stay wide during build up play. If Salah decides not to follow City's left back into midfield, then the City's left back is unmarked and this creates a 2v1 against the liverpool player marking City's cdm. So the liverpool player marking city's cdm has to decide whether to continue marking the cdm or mark the left back who is now in midfield. He cannot mark 2 men at once. So City build up play from the back through the inverted leftback.
At Barcelona, instead of using inverted fullbacks, Pep used dani alves as a wing-back and abidal as a more defensive fullback. During build up play, dani alves would push up the right wing while right winger would tuck in to leave space for alves to overlap. Then abidal stayed back in his left back position to make it a back 3. So if the opponent was pressing Barca in a 4-3-3 formation, Pep would instruct the cdm (Sergio busquets) to drop between the Center backs and make it a back 4. This gave barca a 4v3 advantage at the back. It is how Pep's barca usually build up their play. At times, we would see xavi drop all the way back alongside busquets to build up play.
So the biggest difference between Pep's barca and Pep's City is the way Guardiola uses his fullbacks. At City, his fullbacks play as inverted fullbacks when City have possession.
Also Pep has become more direct at City than he was at Barca. City are lethal with counter attacks as well as they are with possession. These has been aided by having fast wingers (sterling and sane). The loss of sane to injury early this season made City become slower in their play. This is because Mahrez or bernardo silva are not as fast as Sane, so Pep had to tweak his tactics. Without sane, City mostly counter-attacked through Sterling. Last season when Sane was fit, Pep could launch counter attacks on either side, either through sterling or sane and this made City unpredictable and more dangerous. This season without sane made them less dangerous on counters as they only had sterling as the fastest winger.

Without Messi's ability to make defenders pay for bad tackles and marking and his ability to look for space including his first touch and vision made his level of attacking influence exponentially crucial.
