  • Local residents who witnessed Chinese President Xi Jinping and British Prime Minister David Cameron’s visit to a pub in Buckinghamshire on Friday have spoken with China Central Television about their unusual experience.
After holding an hour-long meeting at Cameron’s country retreat, Chequers, on Thursday, Xi and Cameron visited a pub near Princes Risborough for a beer.
The pub's landlord and local people who were present during the visit said they felt honored to have the president in their local drinking establishment.
"Last night we were lucky enough to have the prime minister and the president of China came and paid us a visit which was a great honor and they were lovely people, lovely people. Very, very nice people indeed. They just had a pint of English beer and some traditional English fish and chips to eat, which was lovely, which is an old English custom," said Steve Hollings, the landlord of The Plough at Cadsden.
"Well, I came to the pub for a drink after work, and shortly afterwards Mr. Cameron and President [Xi] came in for a drink, afterwards. I think it's brilliant, come to see the local people, have a drink in the pub. That's what you do in England," said a local resident.
"Had quite some banquets over the previous few days and they'll continue to do that so why not chill out and come to a local pub and just enjoy some fish and chips and a pint. I think it was very, very good, good idea," said another resident.
Some residents said the Chinese president’s decision to visit a local pub during his state visit will help push forward mutual understanding between the two countries’ peoples.
"I think it's fantastic that the Chinese president came out to see an ordinary part of England. I think most of us feel that China is a big country, superpower in the world, and we know very little about it. Hopefully more people come from China to visit the UK in the future, and hopefully more of us will travel to China as it opens up and becomes a more popular destination. It would be great to see more Chinese industry here and I know there has been a lot of investment over the last week announced, and that's great. And equally, some English people going to work in China. I have friends who are working in China now, this is a good thing," said a local resident.

It was amazing, you could sense the presence, even when the security details arrived 5 hours before the vist.
