Yes, back in those days things were very different. And I agree with you to a point. But to be fair child beating/abuse was a little over the top...

My mum told Ben Johnson day came about in the mid to late 1800"s. Named after Ben Johnson from a privilege family who got into trouble and couldn't pay his fines because it was before pay day. But you know most stories are passed down the generations verbally. And that she got from her mum.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I think because a lot of Jamaicans grew up "rough", they've tried ro make life easier for their kids. It's not a bad intention, but some parents and grandparents have gone overboard to the point where the kids end up being spoiled - and that can be detrimental. I often wish I could rewind the clock and go back to the days of my childhood: marbles, box drinks truck, rolling down the hill in a barrel, when it was raining we swam in every drain without fear of catching anything. I lived at my grandma's house for a short while. She didn't have running water. We had to go to the river 6a.m daily to bathe, then walk couple miles through cane fields to get to school. Just finished watching your video on Negril as well. Truthfully, "Development" has pros and cons. 😢

It's true. Most children nowadays have nothing to help them build character or resilience.

Ben Johnson day: it might name so cos of the athlete Ben Johnson, born Jamaican, run fi Canada, he run 1984 at Olympicgames in Seoul fastest time in 100m ever, and him beet Carl Lewis. Johnson had the biggest mouth in the universe, him says when the Start shut buss, race done allready (cos him the best, weh weh this that). Next day them find him was doped, and him did have to give back the gold medal. He was the biggest looser, everybody use to hate him. Just like day before payday. This can be the reason, why thursday name B.J. day, eeeh?

As children it seemed like nothing. We stop and pick mango and fling after birds
