There's a very unique and special spirit in Jamaica and it's like no place I've ever been before. Every time I arrive in Mo'Bay and walk out into the sunshine I literally feel like I am arriving home. It's a feeling I can't truly explain. I love Jamaica and I pray for her people that they will one day soon have everything they deserve after years and years of being deprived and systematically held back.

I also think Jamaicans are much healthier than those of other nations. Their food is mostly organic, grown in their own back yard, they live lives far less stressful.

I went to Negril in late April for 8 days, I fell in love with Jamaica , The people are warm and loving . I learned so much while I was there. . 7 mile beach is beautiful I loved walking the beach in the mornings . I hope to be back next year or sooner🇯🇲💜🇯🇲💜
You have the talent of a great documentary maker. You kept my attention and I didn't want the video to end. I can see you must have been on vacation with your family and that's why you only interviewed the locals that on are on the beach. Good for you for taking the time to learn the culture you were in instead of just staying on your resort, in the pool or in your room. I started going to Negril in 2005 at the Riu Negril. I've went back every year since then and I too love to talk to the people. I've learned so much and have a deep love for the people and the country. We come back each year for our friends we made that we miss so much when we are home. We stay in contact throughout the year. When we are there we are with our local friends all day just talking and going off the beaten path. I've seen things no tourist will ever see. When my friends who we think of as family now say "where yuh wanna go?" My reply is always "take me where there are no white people." Lol I can't stand most tourist. Especially the ones that forget they are in another country. Complain there is no Budweiser or Grey Goose Vodka on resort etc. You're in Jamaica drink rum and red stripe, jeez. I find the people of Jamaica to be honest, respectful and full of integrity. Besides the beauty of all of Jamaica, it's the people that have me coming back year after year. I leave in 2 weeks and 4 days and cannot wait to get back only this time I'm bring 9 other friends who want to meet my friends of Jamaica and see what I see. They are very excited and so are my friends in Jamaica. Our days are already planned when we get there. We don't take excursions anymore with the resort we give our money to our friends instead. I'd rather be on a private boat with my people only vs a huge catamaran with a time limit and 100 or more tourists, drunk and splashing so much that you can't even see pretty fish in the Caribbean. Plus I've learned why make the rich even richer. Support local because these resort owners don't give two shits about the people of Jamaica. They don't pay their employees enough, they are taking advantage of the government being corrupt. The thought that our maid who works her butt off all day, long hours and only makes $65 to $80 a week US dollars makes me sick. I always find my maid and pay her two weeks pay for the week. I personally hand it to her. Big up to those that work the resorts but I can see why most locals would want to work the beach. More money to feed their family and make a living. I could go on forever. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
This is so powerful. I first visited JM in 2001 and have returned every few years since then. When I go I try to visit local places and purchase from vendors in order to support them, and I enjoy taking time to talk with people and learn about their lives. And yes, regarding your comment about the maids, I make a point to pay them extra for putting up with us visitors. I wish I could do more to support the people back a yard whom I consider my family.
What is wrong with the interviewees they speak from their heart and that's what counts most.because you're educated you feel ashame of how they answer the questions.you got to remember that English is not our original language.so what if they dont phrase their answers correctly or put the correct words into context, you understand fully what they mean and that's what counts.
Jamaica: a place where if there was enough employment, I'm betting VERY few would look for opportunity elsewhere. As an old time reggae lyric once said: 'too many dog/not enough bone'.

As a female Canadian who has been to Jamaica 10 times and travelled outside the tourist areas, I can tell you the best thing about Jamiacs is the PEOPLE ❤. If you were to take a walk down a road with houses, someone will invite you to dinner. They are beautiful, strong, friendly and very spiritual. Next is the music and overall vibe. Then of course is the beautiful landscape and ocean. I wish they would leave tip boxes for the people who get up before dawn to make the beaches beautiful for the tourists. I need to go back just to talk with Michael Livingston. 😍

Great background capture and great overall capture of the beautiful people and places - even if your mini documentary was one-sided. Jamaica is one of the few islands where you can actually drink the water and for a small island, it's amazingly modernized. There's a Burger King there???? Holy Jesuit! It's been centuries since Mamma visited but it's definitely time for me to return.

this is so true i'm a Jamaica born and raise, never in my life time travel to a next country grow up in a in the parish of Clarendon but to discuss the lock of job in Clarendon is another story to be told so i relocated myself to negril where i stay by strangers i then got a job at a hotel called (Idle Awhile) work for a years build my house but then new management came in and was trick and force out of a job where am still current likely unemployed.....so your video is a good link to see what Jamaica is really what it is .......
Quite enlightening. Enjoyed the beauty of course but the people seem very nice and friendly; quite a different impression than some videos, especially the attitudes toward Americans in general. I've been to New York City and seen many homeless people living on the streets, begging at stop lights, singing and playing instruments for tourists on the side walk. completely the same scenario you showed in in Jamaica only this is New York. Now, what if I interviewed these same homeless and underprivileged people in New York, what would these people tell me? Obviously they don't represent the entire country.

First and foremost, I am a Jamaican. Secondly, you can't compare Jamaica to the US. The US is the most developed and powerful country in the world. The US is richer than most, if not, all the countries in the world- not just Jamaica. Besides, Jamaica, like most countries, have very wealthy places and very poor and underdeveloped places. Negril, for the most part, is one of the most underdeveloped places/parishes in Jamaica, despite the fact that it is known for its tourism. Most of the people you interviewed in this video are the stereotypical Jamaicans: the Rastafarian, the poor and under-educated Jamaicans. Your impression of Jamaica, if based solely on these interviewees and their perceptions and on this part of the country that you have visited, will not only be skewed but also flawed. You can't interview a few under-educated Jamaicans on a beach and get a true idea of Jamaicans and Jamaica. This will naturally result in the perpetuation of stereotypes. You don't find the average Jamaican on a beach carving woods/selling clothes. In fact, only a very few Jamaicans are actually Rastafarian or smoke. People in the US, and other countries other than Jamaica and the US, have a greater propensity to smoke and abuse drugs. Further, I think Jamaica is developed in terms of infrastructure than a lot of other countries that are considered rich or richer than Jamaica because of GDP per capita. The problem with Jamaica is unemployment or underemployment which is not necessarily a reflection of the development of the country. By that I mean, your country can be developed but still plagued by other macro-economic problems such as unemployment. What Jamaica needs is a reduction in the unemployment level and an increase in the GDP per capita.

My people are Desendants of Arawak Indians and Carib I dnt think they will die in six years if my uncle lived to see 105years of staying on one island they have natural food there so they are more likely to live longer than us Amerindians

this is so true i'm a Jamaica born and raise, never in my life time travel to a next country grow up in a in the parish of Clarendon but to discuss the lock of job in Clarendon is another story to be told so i relocated myself to negril where i stay by strangers i then got a job at a hotel called (Idle Awhile) work for a years build my house but then new management came in and was trick and force out of a job where am still current likely unemployed.....so your video is a good link to see what Jamaica is really what it is .......

Quite enlightening. Enjoyed the beauty of course but the people seem very nice and friendly; quite a different impression than some videos, especially the attitudes toward Americans in general. Would love to visit Jamaica and mingle with these gentle, very resourceful people. Yes, resourceful indeed. Much respect for them!

I've been to New York City and seen many homeless people living on the streets, begging at stop lights, singing and playing instruments for tourists on the side walk. completely the same scenario you showed in in Jamaica only this is New York. Now, what if I interviewed these same homeless and underprivileged people in New York, what would these people tell me? Obviously they don't represent the entire country.
The audio for the interviews are very low,I could not hear what they were saying especially with the music play at the same time.
loved it there! very friendly people, some are fast in your face for selling stuff tough, this is true but if you have the right attitude you will be fine, peace from a french Canadian.

First and foremost, I am a Jamaican. Secondly, you can't compare Jamaica to the US. The US is the most developed and powerful country in the world. The US is richer than most, if not, all the countries in the world- not just Jamaica. Besides, Jamaica, like most countries, have very wealthy places and very poor and underdeveloped places. Negril, for the most part, is one of the most underdeveloped places/parishes in Jamaica, despite the fact that it is known for its tourism.
Most of the people you interviewed in this video are the stereotypical Jamaicans: the Rastafarian, the poor and under-educated Jamaicans. Your impression of Jamaica, if based solely on these interviewees and their perceptions and on this part of the country that you have visited, will not only be skewed but also flawed.
You can't interview a few under-educated Jamaicans on a beach and get a true idea of Jamaicans and Jamaica. This will naturally result in the perpetuation of stereotypes. You don't find the average Jamaican on a beach carving woods/selling clothes. In fact, only a very few Jamaicans are actually Rastafarian or smoke. People in the US, and other countries other than Jamaica and the US, have a greater propensity to smoke and abuse drugs. Further, I think Jamaica is developed in terms of infrastructure than a lot of other countries that are considered rich or richer than Jamaica because of GDP per capita. The problem with Jamaica is unemployment or underemployment which is not necessarily a reflection of the development of the country. By that I mean, your country can be developed but still plagued by other macro-economic problems such as unemployment.
What Jamaica needs is a reduction in the unemployment level and an increase in the GDP per capita.

Who care what people think..let them think whatever the hell they want to think. I want to see the poor, the Rasta and all the disenfranchised groups in Jamaica. highlighted, not some bourgeois 5% been shown off as the desirable goodness of Jamaica. If individuals feel they have to validate their Jamaican-ness they are a part of the problem. If I look white and tell someone that I am Jamaican and they don't believe me that is their problem not mine. The thing is if you are concerned that these groups stereotype the typical Jamaican its because you don't want to associate with these groups whom you feel prejudice toward. How dare anyone think these are the "real" Jamaican. Take your fake self and your flawed rhetoric elsewhere. The majority of Jamaicans are the stereotypical images and I love it.. I don't buy into stereotype so I don't pay attention to it.
