It's not translated more nuanced like in the film, where the sentence is changed more to give credit to context and information for those who don't know, but it's still cool to know these things. Many other lines in the film also come from ancient greek texts, as the joke of "fighting in the shade", or "breakfast feisty, for we dine in hell". @@skillcoiler "The Allies broke Germany's will". Germany is not an individual. There were millions sick of war and I'm sure thousands or tens of thousands or who knows how many who would've wanted to continue fighting in the Alps around the Obersalzberg. But "Germany's will power" is not a "thing" that can be "broken" because Germany is not an object or person that can have a human characteristic such a will power. And the amalgamation of each Germans individual desire to continuing fighting is unquantifiable in any case. What can be quantified are the massive losses in lives, material and industrial capacity Germany suffered which are what ended the war. The idea that will power can overcome everything on the battlefield has often lead to disaster. History is littered with examples of which I'll name a few. The Japanese army belief that complete discipline and the will to defeat the enemy is what lead to suicidal banzai charges. The army command later recognized this mistake and decided to dig in knee their island fortresses making things much more difficult for the Marines and soldiers. In WW1 the French command believed in will and Esprit de Corps which manifested itself in the "Cult of the Offensive". The theory was that disciplined, motivated troops would be able to overcome any defense, regardless of the number of MGs and are as long as they had the will to keep marching. We all know how well that worked in France between 1914-18. If will power could triumph over anything than surely Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg would have been successful. The simple fact is will power is not the final arbiter. Though the willingness to suffer privations in war has been and always will be important in determining success or failure in battle, it is not the be all end all that a movie like 300 makes it out to be. Though it does make for entertaining cinema!
I loved the speech at the end of this movie, but I think the tactical brilliance of the Greeks at the actual battle of Plataea was more impressive. The Greek and Persian armies were at a stand still, with the Greeks being out numbered. For a while they simply were standing there facing one another, unable to move as it would put the other force at the advantage. The Greeks were the first to move, but not forwards. They made it seem like they were falling back, exposing their flanks to the enemy. So the Persian leader ordered his army forwards to kill the Greeks. Once they were close enough, the Greeks turned right around and formed a shield wall to advance. At this point the Persians were committed to the attack, and their defeat.
I like how this movie is based off of actual historic events, but is also fictional at the same time. The style of the movie is really good and it has a simple message; when assholes come to try and enslave you, you fight for your freedom.
This was Dilios's speech to the Spartans. I can't help but think that the speech Xerxes gave to the Persians was "RUN FOR YOUR FUCKING LIVES THEY'LL MASSACRE US!!!"
Xerxes wasn't there. Pausanias commanded the Greek army and Mardonios, Xerxe's general, commanded the Persians. Xerxes had left after the naval battle of Salamina.
Subjugator R Maybe he was planning a great dinner for his entire army for years and it was time? Who knows, maybe he didn't want to disappoint them. I wonder what he cooked.

Imagine boys and girls who are watching this, 300 people against tens of thousands people and still they hold them back. I have my degree in Archaeology and History and I really researched Spartan way of life in every detail, and this is a fact: they were the best soldiers and warriors this world has ever seen, because their entire LIFE was a path of warrior, and one more thing, imagine how honorable was Leonidas and his 300, because even today they are alive trough movies such as this, trough history, and imagine how many IDIOTS lived in last 2500 years, who remembers them in this manner as we remember Leonidas and 300? Think about it, so live your life with honor, so that you can be remembered, not trough history or movies hehe, but trough your children and family, in the end, that's why Leonidas and his 300 went to defend that piece of earth, and for freedom, wish you everythin best ppl...
samurai also had their own path of the warrior, the bushido. they prepared and perfected their skill since the moment they were old enough to hold a sword. spartans were the best team fighters in the world, but history's best duelists were the samurai.
Ciaphas Cain I agree with you, I know a lot about samurai dont worry :) but that wasn't my point here, the point was how many of ppl disrespect the fact of old ancient ways, and they dont understand it in right way... they think it's a science fiction only because they live in pussy-ass times when man greatest achievement considering bravery and "spiritualism" is how to turn on Iphone and Samsung Galaxy. They forgot human aspects from this period, as well from period of 20th century like when men went to the Moon in a fuccking refrigerator, now they dont have a balls OR SPIRIT to send a men to orbit anymore, they forgot the men who went to discover new world once, without any insurance for their lifes, they even question today the truth of it, they even say that never happened, well ofcourse they do, how can they imagine from their pussy-world perspective they living in somethin like that... They even classify a movie like GRAVITY as Sci-Fi only because it took place in Earth's orbit, not nowing that crew of Apollo 11 and 13 had 10 times more problems than Sandra Bullock and Clooney in that movie, but to them, that's a Sci-FI, I hope you get the point. "This day we rescue a world from mysticism and tyranny and usher in a future brighter than anything we can imagine. " I feel warm and sad at this quote all at the same time. Because it shows how far we came as humans and how far we have to go still.
Also, almost everything that the Greeks of the classical age gave to humanity, came AFTER this battle. If the Persians had won, and managed to conquer Greece, we have no idea if people like Pericles, Aristofanis, Plato, Pythagoras etc would have been able to shine. "Here, by spartan law we lie"
Is one of the most beautiful sentence i've ever heard
That is actually written on their tomb. In Ancient Greek: Ὦ ξεῖν', ἀγγέλλειν Λακεδαιμονίοις, ὅτι τῇδε κείμεθα τοῖς κείνων ῥήμασι πειθόμενοι
Google it if you like, and you can get more infos
yes because those lines was real ,not just for the movie.in ancient greek language which is written on a stone at thermopylea :Ω ξειν’, αγγέλλειν Λακεδαιμονίοις, ότι τήδε κείμεθα, τοις κείνων ρήμασι πειθόμενοι
even the original language which i dont understand a word look so facking epic
@@xdx2653 I do, I'll put it down for ya. It's attic greek, which they indeed don't speak anymore." Ω ξειν’ " goes for Passerby, or Stranger. " αγγέλλειν Λακεδαιμονίοις " is the part of "message the spartans/report to the spartans". "ότι τήδε κείμεθα" is literally translated to "that here we lie". And the last part, literally translates to "those who obey their words". So, the entire thing, literally translated, goes: "Passerby, report to the spartans that here we lie, those who obey their words." It's not translated more nuanced like in the film, where the sentence is changed more to give credit to context and information for those who don't know, but it's still cool to know these things. Many other lines in the film also come from ancient greek texts, as the joke of "fighting in the shade", or "breakfast feisty, for we dine in hell". These are ancient texts written by Plutarch, from his "Sayings of Spartants, 225b and 225d. If it interests you, please check it out, it is both hilarious and epic at the same time.

Not just for Sparta, but for all Greece and the promise this country holds. Now, here on this ragged patch of earth called Plataea, Xerxes' hordes face obliteration! Platea, the greatest Greek victory, that teach us that willpower can beat everything...
I wish they make that movie in Platea, but it would be overrated
Not to be a wet blanket but Hitler thought the exact same thing. Dear god, the most famous Nazi propoganda film is called "The Triumph of the Will".
The greatest Greek victory was in Gaugamela
@@jona.scholt4362 He was right... The allies just broke Germany's will.
That slow zoom in charge was badass
The way he drops that "give thanks men!!!" Gives me chills
At this point the Persians were committed to the attack, and their defeat.
wow nice
Yeah. I always thought it was retarded how the Greeks went right back to fighting each other after the war and enslaving their fellow greeks
Not to mention how the Persian general was killed. He got on his horse, then a spartan threw a stone at him and fractured his skull
