~ i dont like how stupid they depicted some important things, like archers holding the full drown bow to shoot in volleys... . Its quite hard and tiresome to hold shots like this, the elfs/elbs did the same, the enemy has all the time to raise the shields when done so, but if arches would shoot when ready the sky would be full of arrows all the time. Every time they hold fire and wait for a command to release them in this trilogy... . Its plain stupid, but people love it. + how stupid the catapults on this castle are placed, behind the walls would make more sense, but otherwhise the enemy couldnt shoot them down so easy for the cinema. + every wall in this trilogy has no kind of machicolations nor proper crenels. Its like these walls where build only to look good, and not to actually repell an attack on it... . And infront of a castle are normally ditches digged by the defenders, so enemy towers cant just roll straight to the walls.
A simple spikewall or two, with ditches digged would have stopped these horsemen. And every single besieging force builds that in the first few hours, otherwhise enemys can just walk into like shown here. So yes, for a fictional universe, inhabitatet by idiots, its a good trilogy and great scenes.

@@wodrapixel2818 to be fair, in history there have been many dumb decisions made by generals and rulers regarding their armies and fortresses. and yes this is a movie things need to be a bit more theatrical than in real life. also i think the book itself has some explanation to certain things, i think in the book it's mentioned the horses of the rohirim aren't regular horses like real ones, they are much stronger and faster since they are of a breed that isn't real but exists in the LOTR world.

    At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again;
and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before:
    Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it
that it burst asunder. And straightway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains.
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew
in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and the darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City.

So realistic in terms of historical battle tactics too.
Most movies have terrible battle scenes but somehow this 20 year old movie absolutely not only nailed it cinematically but also realistically.
The way the orc leader shouts commands to form ranks, telling pikemen to get to the front. They also form an accurate formation, digging their pikes into the ground pointing the spear upwards towards the horses. And we actually get to see a cavalry charge. Normally in movies the two lines meet and it instantly turns into movie style 1v1s.
So much detail was put into these movies in many ways.

At last he halted once again. The City was now nearer. A smell of burning was in the air and a very shadow of death. The horses were uneasy. But the king sat upon Snowmane, motionless, gazing upon the agony of Minas Tirith, as if stricken suddenly by anguish, or by dread. He seemed to shrink down, cowed by age. Merry himself felt as if a great weight of horror and doubt had settled on him. His heart beat slowly. Time seemed poised in uncertainty. They were too late! Too late was worse than never! Perhaps Théoden would quail, bow his old head, turn, slink away to hide in the hills.
Then suddenly Merry felt it at last, beyond doubt: a change. Wind was in his face! Light was glimmering. Far, far away, in the South the clouds could be dimly seen as remote grey shapes, rolling up, drifting: morning lay beyond them.
But at that same moment there was a flash, as if lightning had sprung from the earth beneath the City. For a searing second it stood dazzling far off in black and white, its topmost tower like a glittering needle: and then as the darkness closed again there came rolling over the fields a great boom.
At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before:
    Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder.
Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new tire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young.

No doubt, good vs evil is more of an overarching concept than a theme from itself, but the choices that men do is definetely among one of the most important things Tolkien wanted to display, and how men that do evil acts are usually corrupted by fear, usually its the fear of death that leads to men's downfall in Tolkien's mythology. We can see that was at led to the downfall of the greatest kingdom of men Numenor, but at the other aspect, conquering this fear leads to amazing accomplishments like the House of Hador did in the battles of the first age, and how Theoden and the Rohan riders did in this battle of the Pelennor Fields.

    RIP Bernard Hill. My King!

I've always loved Theoden's arc in these movies, it's very subtle.
A King, with no heir and no hope for a legacy. He is the last of his line. His forefathers all carry with them great achievements. What does he have? What magnificent thing has he done? His Kingdom had nearly been on the brink of defeat.
Then, despite Gondor having done nothing for him. He goes to their aid. He rallies his people. Taking them into a battle he knows they have very little chance to win, but one they must fight. Even if it costs them everything they have. He and his people will not perish meekly, they WILL be remembered. In essence, Theoden proves himself as a King. That he rallied his people against something insurmountable. Even though he dies here, he dies knowing that he did everything he could, and he will not feel ashamed in the midst of his forefathers.

"Théoden opened his eyes, and they were clear, and he spoke in a quiet voice though laboured. 'Farewell, Master Holbylta!' he said. 'My body is broken. I go to my fathers. And even in their mighty company I shall not be ashamed. I felled the [King of the Haradrim, the Men who serve Sauron]. A grim morn, and a glad day, and a golden sunset!'" -J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Return of the King"

@@Nmille98 As long as the ending of the movie is, I kind of wish they had covered Theodens return to Edoras and his rest in the Barrowfield. A great character in both book and movie.

Especially when you contrast him with his Gondorian counterpart: Denethor.
Both are old men, having seen many tragedies in their lives. Both have lost their sons. Both are under attack by their greatest enemy. Both want to leave a good legacy for their ancestors. Both succumbed to despair.
Theoden, though, rose up. He fulfilled his oaths. He acted in such a way as to be honored by all. He rallied his nation and people, leading them to victory. When he died, he was universally mourned.
Denethor, by contrast, figuratively (and literally) fell. He disgraced his line in his despair, failed his people, and were it not for Aragorn and Theoden’s timely arrivals, would have seen his nation and people destroyed. His only consolation was knowing that he didn’t murder his own son before his own death.

Theodin's story is one that always gets me right in the feels. He comes back from the edge of the abyss so many times to fight for good and lead his people to glory, even when all hope seems lost. He lost his mind, his son, his home, and most of his people, but he still rides out to defend whatever good is left in the world- knowing it will be his end. "Death!"

In a way I feel like it is precisely because he has lost almost everything he cares about that he is so willing to go all-in to fight for the one thing he has left: hope.

This is a timeless scene. Both in the sense that I will remember it to the end of my life, and that it is one of the only scenes in a movie that feels so much longer than a mere 4 minutes but I feel no boredom watching it, only a rising swell of emotion. Thank you Bernard Hill.

Yep. Yet, to be honest, it is this big fella at 3.33 that I would fear. Not only is he big, rides in the first line clad in chainmail...but his beard is partially grey ! Always fear a fighter who lives long enough to turn grey. Either he has seen terrible things (and lived through it all) to turn grey early, or he is doing that for a long time. Either way, simply bad news for anyone on the receiving end :-)

I remember a few years ago they were memes about him, that extra absolutely made the scene and I completely understand the split second of close shot on him. His face just tells you that even on a mule and armed with a stick he would've gone in, he's here to manage bookings to the realm of the dead.
