Yoo YoungJin, who sings the studio recorded version of "Tell Me (What is Love)" with D.O., was an SM singer, songwriter and main producer for years. He was one of the first few artists signed under SM way back in the early '90s and he worked with SM up until Lee SooMan was forced to retire, when he and the company also parted ways.
Yoo YoungJin is one of the reasons why SM is known as a vocal powerhouse company, because he was a vocal coach for a lot of SM's artists. He is the vocal coach who helped train D.O. to be the amazing singer that you hear today. He is the one who wrote and produced EXO's pre-debut songs "History" and "What is Love," which, now that you have heard "Tell Me (What is Love)," I am sure you can hear his influence on several of EXO's songs.
D.O. and aespa's Winter are his most prized students, and they have even been nicknamed Yoo YoungJin's son and daughter because they have such similar vocal styles and abilities.
Yoo YoungJin produced or collaborated on a large majority of SM's songs, and he is the one that is most often credited with coming up with the most iconic parts of SM's songs. For example, he is the one who does the ad libs and high notes in the background of Super Junior's "Sorry Sorry Answer" MV, and he is the one we hear harmonizing with Taeyeon in Girls' Generation's song "The Boys," etc. (Back in the day, his vocals and/or ad libs were used in a lot of SM's songs.)
If you look up Yoo YoungJin, you would be surprised how many of SM's songs he has been involved in over the years. At this point, if we made a list, it would probably be easier to list the songs he didn't work on. LOL

This is super crazy considering the fact that at that time kyungsoo was a rookie and yo youngjin is his vocals director and coach this shows how much a good vocalists EXO are.
D.O. (and the other members of the Holy Trinity) is one of the very best vocalists I've ever heard. He is genuinely stunning
Yoo Young Jin He was the vocal coach of D.O (Producer and singer of the SM) it was said that they were like father and son, or that D.O was the little Young Jin because of the similarity of their voices in different generations and the song is by Joung Jin and he sang it with D.O, there is a small clip with D.O singing it alone in a concert and another clip of D.O with Baek and Chen accompanying him and the rest of EXO dancing...

Yoo Youngjin is D.O.'s vocal coach. He even said DO is his favorite among the EXO members bcos of his vocal texture. Yoo Youngjin also coaches Winter of Aespa.
Yoo Youngjin was an SM executive and was also Kyungsoo's vocal couch in SM - thats probably why they decided to do this collaboration as a SM station song. YYJ has a unique sound which means he's a known name in early kpop and also he produced MAMA etc. Kyungsoo is often referred to as YYJ's son in terms of vocals and there is a clear similarity when he sings this type of RnB although I would argue Kyungsoo has an affinity towards other genres where he sounds quite different.
This collab and his dominance in certain exo songs is why Kyungsoo is known in kpop as the king of rnb despite not releasing rnb title tracks in his solo music.
P.S. the baekhyun thing with runs in songs? you reminded me you haven't heard exo's original b-sides yet - running in songs is Kyungsoo's THING - if you hear someone going OFF in the background - it's usually kyungsoo

Yoo Youngjin is quite literally the blueprint of SM. He has contributed so much to SM's identity over the years. Sadly enough, he's not with SM anymore. But he's a great producer and singer. His 3 special students are Changmin from TVXQ, D.O. from EXO and Winter from Aespa. The soul in their voices, sweet lord. I am a sucker for runs and riffs.

This is an absolute masterpiece Rookie Kyungsoo created with his Vocal Coach Yoo Youngjin. They had a great Harmony since both of them have great RnB vocals. Such a beautiful song!

Theres actually a rumor Youngjin followed Kyungsoo to Kyungsoo's new company. Also, Kyungsoo is actually the adlib and riffs and runs king in EXO. If you hear someone going absolutely off in the background, 90% of the time it's Kyungsoo.
I hope that's true. I have been waiting for Yoo Youngjin to form his own company, because I think he could attract some amazing trainees. Someone needs to keep the R&B vocal tradition alive in the Korean idol industry.

I didn't know I had a thing for runs and riffs not until I heard Kyungsoo open his mouth, lol. It's his specialty. He wasn't called the umami of EXO's songs for no reason.

Not just the lyric translation but who is singing which part is not accurate. Personally, I think the biggest loss from the SM collapse is the loss of Yoo Youngjin.
He's the reason that all SM groups have that distinct R&B base in their discography. You'd be shocked at how many songs for ALL SM groups were created by him.

Youngjin is D.O.'s vocal coach for years at SM. With the sentiment always rumored around SM that he is"Youngjin's son...Youngjin has been a manager at SM for a number of years, helping to produce many SM vocalists to star level within his resume over the years...
Yoo Youngjin, before SM, made his own mark in the kmusic world as an r&b singer as a younger man, with music and albums in the early 90's. His vocal influence can be clearly heard as D.O.'s vocal abilities progressed in Exo over the years.
As of now, Yoo Youngjin has left Sm in 2023, not wanting to be a part of the new management that took over the company in early 2023, which also prompted Baekhyun and D.O. to leave, to start their own companies...all of Exo's revised contracts were in the air as all members split up regarding SM's sudden takeover, but all Exo members agreed to SM being in charge of Exo members as the group, Exo, but as soloists, they are free to do as they please. đđș

I could always tell D.O., Chen and Baekhyun's voice apart. When I first got into Exo I had trouble recognizing the difference between Chen vs Suho vocals, Kai and Xiumin vocals, Kai and Sehun rapping.
â @@tbakhalid4781hahaha thatâs wild! Sehun and Kai sound so different to me. And I have never mistaken Chen for Suho, but I have heard many people say that. Xiumin and Kai each have a very specific tone to me, I always know itâs them. How interesting this is, every person really has a different ear for sounds đ Iâm usually quick in identifying the membersâ voices, but everytime my playlist is on shuffle and I hear super old songs, there will always be moments where I still think BaekSoo sound so much alike. But oddly enough, in Baekhyun and Kyungsoo solo works, I actually sometimes get goosebumps thinking Kai is singing the harmonies/backing vocals. Hahaha. Itâs just how good they are and how close they are, I believe they are all strongly influenced by each other.
@@M-de-Vale I mostly had trouble at the beginning of getting to know them, that too in their old town. I think it's because they were still young and growing, Sehun's voice went through many changes throughout the years and I also noticed that the military has also helped enhance the voices. To be honest if you notice some old ballads then Suho and Chen have similar voice tones but throughout the years their respective voice techniques and range have expanded in different directions (only in vocals), same with Kai and Xiumin (in vocals) cause both have a sweet texture in their voices but to be honest it's easy to catch the difference once you have recognized the length. Kai's voice is honey dripping while Xiumin's voice is classic lover's voice in old movies, I can recognize Kai and Sehun's voices well but in some of their old songs + performances especially in Playboy there's similar tones and techniques of rapping style that their voices sounds same.
@@M-de-Vale honestly Exo is the first group where I grasp the voice colors of the members well especially Baekhyun, D.O., Chanyeol and Chen. Other members' voices are also easy to recognize. Suho because of his classical opera tone, Sehun for his raspy flowy sweet tone, Lay for being a really thin oriented + clear voice.
