CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: Ralph Richardson, Michele Morgan and the amazing child actor Bobby Henrey star in Carol Reed’s version of Graham Greene’s suspense classic “The Fallen Idol” (1948). Also starring Sonia Dresdel as the terrifying housekeeper Mrs. Baines, this story deals with the love between a butler and a little boy in an embassy in London and the complications that arise when the child begins to believe his friend the butler may be murderer. The suspense is taut, brilliantly written by Greene and directed by Carol Reed, in what would be a trilogy of suspense films that began with “Odd Man Out" (1947) and ended “The Third Man” (1949). It also contains one of the greatest performances by a child ever shot. You’ll be on the edge of your seat throughout this suspense classic! Steve Hayes: Tired Old Queen at the Movies

This film means so much to me. Even in the wartime, mothers took babies and children to the parks in London for fresh air and my mother met Bobby Henry's mother, who was a writer, when she was sitting in a park (she and her husband and Bobby lived in the centre of the West End, like us). Bobby was several years older than me and my mother always told me about this wonderful film when I was grown up and how she remembered Bobby and his mother. I once saw a documentary about Carol Reed in which the soundtrack was left in when he's talking to Bobby and gently telling him what to do. Reed was a remarkable director, Ralph Richardson was a great actor, Bobby Henry was extraordinary and this really is a great film.
Don't hold this against me, but my favorite thing in this film is Sonia Dresdel as that evil wife. I always belived Hitchcock's theory, that the better the villain the better the film. She is the personification of every little child's "evil witch". She's a combination of Agnes Morrehead, Judith Anderson and my favorite Kathleen Byron. Also, that fabuloius house is a character all it's onw, with it's endless rooms and corridors. Fabulous film. Brilliant acted and directed. After this one, "Odd Man Out" and "The Third Man", I don't think Carol Redd ever topped himself , regardless of the later success of "Oliver!"
Bobby (now Robert) Henrey, is still with us at 77 years of age and lives in Greenwich, Connecticut. He made one other film after "The Fallen Idol", entitled "The Wonder Kid", but retired from the screen at the age of 11 in 1950. He has had a very eventful life since then and his autobiography, "Through Grown-Up Eyes - Living With Childhood Fame" was published in September, 2013. "The Fallen Idol" was a huge success and Bobby became a star overnight. He is still in constant demand to talk about the film and his childhood stardom at film conventions and was recently a guest star at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Los Angeles, where his film was shown and he was interviewed about it on stage after the performance.
Very interesting. I'm always fascinated with how child actors fared in later life. Thank you for sharing.
he's so marvelous in this. I'm glad he's had such a good life.
This is just about the best video review of The Fallen Idol that I've yet seen. Steve has great enthusiasm for the film (as I do) and was obviously very impressed by it and with Bobby Henrey's staggering performance (as I was). The review is very well put together with just the right clips to illustrate what Steve is saying about the film. A job well done!
Thank you very much for your kind comments. I appreciate it no end.
I was about 15 when my father took me to see this movie at the old Exeter Street Theatre in Boston, what used to be called an "art house." Fifty years later l still think it is brilliant. As a theatre freak, living in London for a long time, l met an elderly actress who had worked with Sonia Dresdel, and she corroborates descriptions of the actress l have read in numerous theatre biographies -- she was apparently as much a bitch in real life as on the screen and stage, though highly esteemed as an actress.
Loved this! Love Sonia. She's like Agnes Moorehead in "Dark Passage" or "Kathleen Byron in "Black Narcissus". Hawklike and terrifying!
The magical Steve's encounters with his dolls get me every time. HILARIOUS!!!! I don't have to see them anymore.......I just remember, and start cracking up. Bless you, Steve. I love you.
Thanks, Sweetie! So great!
One of my all-time favourite films! Carol Reed also directed a child actor in another of my favourites, "A Kid for Two Farthings."
I don't know that one. Will have to look it up. Later of course, he directed "oliver"! LOTS of child actors!
I finally got around to watching The Fallen Idol. What a great film. Thanks again Steve.
The magic of movies is just timeless.
Great you review the British atmospheric movies as well.
There was a whole world before this modern world - and all those stories told and untold !
Just amazing.

Yes, it's pretty fabulous!
Oh I am adding this one to my watch very soon list!!!! great episode!!
Such a great movie, that only hard core fans of Brit Noir usually know of. Thanks for highlighting this extrodinary film for people!
I love Reed's series , this one, "Odd Man Out" and of course "The Third Man". I love Brit noir! "Green For Danger", "The Woman In Question'" and "Brighton Rock ' are some favorites. Thanks so much for watching!
this is great, I think I like this review of The Fallen Idol the very best. Thank you Steve, this really lifted my heart this evening....
Top-notch review, Steve. This film is a favorite of mine. I have seen it several times and it never gets old. I like the way you gave only some necessary plot points without actual spoilers. I think it will make many people interested enough to want to watch it. Ralph Richardson was always amazing, and yes, the kid was quite good as well. THANKS for the upload!
You're so welcome!
I'd heard about this movie years ago, now I definitely have to get hold of it. I just found this channel a few days ago and can't believe I never found it sooner. I spent the weekend watching all the "back issues" and it was like being in movie heaven.
Thanks you, Angela! Welcome aboard!
Performances close to the bone, all right, Steve. Thank you for this excellent review...
Bobby Henrey is pure magic.
I've never seen this! I MUST SEE IT! THANKS!, YOU GUYS 🤗!
This is a great review. I'd never heard of this film but now I have to see it. Thanks Steve!

It is so suspenseful. A masterpiece.

Thank you!
Great to see you! Love this movie!
yes, thank -you for reviewing this film.I saw this years ago, a definite classic.
I will check this one out. Thanks for the info.
Awesome review...Spot On.....This is by far the 3rd best film ever produced..whether it is American or British...Bobby Henry is the key difference in this film..without his brilliant acting the Fallen Idol would not shine as it does
I also think Carol Reed's brilliant direction and the casting od Sonia Dresdal as the harridan wife add to the suspense. A marvelous film! Thanks for watching! Steve
More reviews please! (not to be too demanding or anything). Love your work! 😊
They're coming!
Thanks, Steve!
Wonderful review,I look forward to seeing it
If you can, try and watch the Carol Reed riolgy together they are three of the great Film Noir suspencers. "Odd Man Out", "The Fallen Idol" and "The Third Man'. They may all be free on YouTUbe. Enjoy!
Laughed out loud hearing Steve Hayes doing an impression of the late Dora Bryan.
"Stevis Does Dora"...sounds like a porn. I love her!
A brilliant film and indeed thrilling on so many levels!
Absolutely!
I've never heard of this one but I am intrigued to watch it now!
Its wonderful!
I have wanted to see this movie for a while now i want to see it even more.
You'll love it!
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Just when I think I've seen every b/w British movie.
Oh, this is a MUST SEE!
I shall look this up! Thanks, Steve! :)
You won't be sorry!
Holy smokes this looks wonderful!!
It is! One of the most amazing child performances ever captured on film. Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
You are the best, Steve
I'll give you an hour to cut that out! Many thanks! Steve
This is a terrific movie!
The moon poster is cool in the background
I'll tell 'em.
What an absorbing gem of a film beautifully shot and directed. The shots of the barefoot boy running thru London nìght streets is a precurser, foŕ me, to some scenes in THE THIRD MAN. Whatever happened to Bobby Henrey?
He lives in New England and actually came to New York and attended and spoke at a screening of "The Fallen Idol" at the Film Forum. Unfortunately, I couldn't be there and have kicked myself ever since. An amazing performance and so is Sonia Dresdel's, the scariest of scary housekeepers. A cross between Aggie Moorehead, and Kathleen Byron, the mad nun in "Black Narcissus". Thanks for writing and for watching! Steve
It's a terrific film!
carol Reed?!?! WOW! I've only been familiar with him through Oliver. Wild, how he did thrillers.
Check out "Odd Man Out" and "The Third Man".
Amazing grace! But you certainly know how to sell a movie! I'm buying!!!!
SOLD! Hooray!
I love this movie.
HA HA HAAAA... you're so crazy Steve... LOVE YOU
Glad someone does...alright, a few do...more importantly...YOU DO!
I recall watching it years ago and enjoying it.
I believe the ending was quite sad.
Not really. It reunites him with his mother.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ
But doesn't the kid find out his suspicions are false and thus loses a friend?
@@Vebinz I think it's accurate to assume, the butler will be looking for another position. LOL! Best; Steve
Can you post this Movie in CZcams ? Kindly post if you have it... Thanks in anticipation
i expected you'd be glued to Oscar night.,.glad you posted this it was better than Chris Rock schlepping forgirl scout cookie sales for his kids! pitiful
Yup. As usual.
Through the eyes of a child is sad.
And the briliiant direction and cinematography allow you to experience it that way throughout.
I will put it on my list - question is: what happened to the little boy/child actor? is he still alive? what did he do with the remainder of his life?
Bobby (now Robert) Henrey, is still with us at 77 years of age and lives in Greenwich, Connecticut. He made one other film after "The Fallen Idol", entitled "The Wonder Kid", but retired from the screen at the age of 11 in 1950. Happy Oscar night!!
I'm surprised that Kevin Spacey resembles Ralph Richardson so much.
Wow. I never thougt of that! I visited Richardson's grave when I toured Highgate Cemetary in London last year.
Whoa, way too many spoilers in this one!
Hi Steve Fact for u Jayne Mansfield came to the uk eg Leeds 1964
I didn't find the movie very interesting. Given that the story was quite intriguing, the movie could have been done in a more interesting way.
