I met Leahy in the late 90's in Ottawa at the NAC when they performed at the GG awards. Fantastic group of people. Very out going and friendly bunch who wanted to hijack my limo and go into the 'Market' in Ottawa. There was 8 of them!! What could I do? Great memories. Great music.
Its tough typing with goosebumps ya know? I discovered them when i went to Halifax to open a call center, a few years ago now. i'm a little white guy with 2 left feet. Cant carry a tune nor keep the beat. They ought to be a National Treasure!!!!!!
Acoustic drums are loud as fuck. In a setting like this, the wall is needed to prevent the other musicians (and the audience) from getting their ears destroyed. Also if his beats are too fire, the drummer might explode and nobody wants to get that on their shoes.
The noise floor of a stage like this is quite low, so it just helps control the sound. A metal band might sometimes have an incredibly loud stage volume so it doesn't matter how much the drums bleed over
@Ronbomb1 ...i remember learning these tunes when i was about 10 ish or so... theyre all great ...seriously though give the first tune. the curlew a shot youll be able to build up some of the technique needed for jennys chickens and the tamalin/b minor reel in which the bow technique needed for crisp string crossing ,the finger dexterity 4 runs, rolls, double stopping etc.can be refined...drowsy maggies reel isnt in this set, although there is a high possibility you know it as different title=P
@glittermerchant you forgot sleeping maggy's reel and they arn't doing all turns in the tunes but just the same amazing this music is why i still keep playing.
11 years later... the first one is called "The Curlew", but a really interesting variation compared to the standard one ... now I need to learn Jenny's Chickens!
@oakcityrules its not all that difficult to be honest, there just definetly needs to be an excellent technical foundation really, its mostly scale runs and decent bowing skills which takes time but as a piece its relatively easy...however this video is three tunes...the curlew, jennys chickens and the tamalin/ b minor reel....the most difficult of these pieces rangewise /technique wise etc is jennys chickens.maybe give a shot at the curlew and work your way up=Dsoon youl have the whole thing
It might have something to do with the engineer that can be seen at 1:19 trying to fix something. Also after the song, she turns to her pedals as if to troubleshoot herself
If that is your pet peeve, then your musical career is over! The audience is what the music is about--if you cannot interact with your audience(in a positive way, mood), then bye, bye! Try heavy metal rock, that is an angst driven vent.
Still here 2024
This is so freakin catchy it keeps bringing me back and i only came across this about two weeks ago
These guys have some insane talent

Highland804 Wait, they’re a family?
One of my favorite Leahy tunes.
Its tough typing with goosebumps ya know? I discovered them when i went to Halifax to open a call center, a few years ago now.

They ought to be a National Treasure!!!!!!

@FrazzleKat Oh Yeah!! And you should hear his wife, Natalie MacMaster. Absolutely awesome!
This vid is sooooo good even if it's only about half of the song
Amazing song, but I'm curious as to why the drummer is behind a blast shield.
Acoustic drums are loud as fuck. In a setting like this, the wall is needed to prevent the other musicians (and the audience) from getting their ears destroyed. Also if his beats are too fire, the drummer might explode and nobody wants to get that on their shoes.
Maybe he has a tendency to drop the drumsticks, and the others finally got tired of the flying sticks? 😛
The noise floor of a stage like this is quite low, so it just helps control the sound. A metal band might sometimes have an incredibly loud stage volume so it doesn't matter how much the drums bleed over
In case on of those fiddles finally gives out. It's for protection
For purposes of live recordings, they isolate the drums that way the audience noise does not bleed into all of the drum microphones.
Los conozco desde 1997 y no sabia que eran canadienses! como Mackennit. Dios amo Canadá!
2018👌👌👌
Some old fiddlers think Donnel isnt respectful of the tradition but I say go for it!
If you remember that this *isn't* Irish, but Cape Breton Celtic, there's nothing at all wrong with it.
0:47. So this is Celtic music? It's beast, and i like rap.
bien yeahhh
@abscoob thats frickin sweet!! I should put that on my next Christmas list haha
Great Song how can you not tap your foot or cpa your hands when you listen
@FrazzleKat i would go so far as to say one of the best in the world

@glittermerchant you forgot sleeping maggy's reel and they arn't doing all turns in the tunes but just the same amazing this music is why i still keep playing.
he can actually play faster than i know anyone can play and accurately too
2022
I dont know the first tune, but the second one is jennys chickens and the third one is Tam lin or the glasgow reel
11 years later... the first one is called "The Curlew", but a really interesting variation compared to the standard one ... now I need to learn Jenny's Chickens!
Is this song findable on Spotify?
@Bobbonkers I think that's the piano keeping playing the bass is it not?
@oakcityrules
its not all that difficult to be honest, there just definetly needs to be an excellent technical foundation really, its mostly scale runs and decent bowing skills which takes time but as a piece its relatively easy...however this video is three tunes...the curlew, jennys chickens and the tamalin/ b minor reel....the most difficult of these pieces rangewise /technique wise etc is jennys chickens.maybe give a shot at the curlew and work your way up=Dsoon youl have the whole thing
The bass is going nuts at about 1:52 but she's not playing... is this like Millie Vanilly??????
I was wondering also about the piano, doesn’t look she’s playing what can be heard.
It might have something to do with the engineer that can be seen at 1:19 trying to fix something. Also after the song, she turns to her pedals as if to troubleshoot herself
Nice spot, had missed the engineer fiddling away there.
🅱️
We come from the same place
me too, haha
Sheet Music boss
I get the reference
🅱️ minor
Can't fight the piano sheet music anywhere :(
Охренееееть!!!
SCORE?
Look for videos by Natalie MacMaster, his wife who plays & dances more traditional but just as lively celtic tunes!!!!!!!!
whats the name of the first tune they play. i really want to learn it
I know you asked this 3 years ago, but I've been looking for ages, too and only just found it: The Curlew (thesession.org/tunes/174)
@brownzors101 then why u watch it ????
Rush 🅱️elfast
They're not called bow strings.
But look how many he's loosing. Or at least how many he SHOULD be loosing.
Basically a more awesome version of Jenny's chickens
@Keyboardman123 It can't be the piano. The tone of the bass is very differente from the piano. There is something very weird with this video!
Pedro Ivo Braun the bassist is the woman standing closest to the drummer. Black top with loose blue sleeves.
clap**
Zero, I should hope. You loose ARROWS from the bows. Besides, their strings are perfectly tightened.
why cant german folk music be as good as irish
1:38 and where da hell hands of bass player must be at this piece???
1:53 hhmmmm Show me a bass player???
Fast2Z the bassist is the woman in the black top with loose, light blue sleeves; standing nearest to the drummer.
Does charlie daniels play a mean fiddled? hell no....this guy sure does
POTATOES
ok, at 1.37 the bass player stops playing to pull her sleeves up but the bass carries on
Girls in detention: Ugh, I hate detention. It's sooo boring.
