It's incredibly refreshing to see a sequel have direct continuity with the previous game instead of taking place years later like most sequels do. Its a great game and how sequels should be done if they want to tell a continuous story.
Also the fact that they acknowledge Aloy’s multiple accomplishments in the previous game
@@louissykes2406 I laughed hard when I saw Erend rocking to the terrible punk song you find in one of the side quests in Frozen Wilds.
Yes to this exactly! I felt like I was picking up right after zero dawn. It baffles me that people want to skip zero dawn to play this game first. It's literally a continuation of the first one
@@husky6672 Ok how is the story boring?
@@husky6672 just because you don't like it doesn't mean the rest of us have to hate it
HFW is rapidly becoming one of my all time favorites. Absolutely phenomenal. Guerrela games have achieved a pinnacle of art in this game. It's fun, intriguing, engaging every second, and profoundly moving as well. The characters are all so well written and animated that I find myself feeling for them like they're real, which adds a next level appeal to the side quests as well as story. Can't get enough of it
Agreed just completed it and put 106 hours in over 5 weekends totally worth it and is definitely my favorite game of all time.
I was doing a mission out with Erend, and when I knocked out an enemy's helmet with a headshot he commented "Ha! Guess who just lost their helmet?"
There's so much random contextual detail in this game, it's amazing.
I have been playing the first few hours of Forbidden West and its hooked me i loved the first game and Forbidden West is a massive improvment on the gameplay concept the first game set out to do and thats great.
The open world feels alive and i dont think i have been as imersed in an open world since i played Red Dead 2, the open world side quests actually feel worth doing and offer up unique stories and even have unique enviromenrw for those sidequets wich is something not alot of modern open world games do nowadays.
When i was playing the game last night i wont spoil the quest but i found a side quest that started out as a standard side quest and then turned into a cool callback to the first games main story wich was so cool.
Im someone who loves the deep lore in Horizon all the stuff regarding the old ones and it feels like Forbidden West has payed of my investment in the deep lore
It's what Ubisoft used to be good at. I hope Guerilla don't fall down the same rabbit hole. They're nailing this so far.
Few games have satisfied me but horizon zero dawn and horizon forbidden west are two games that left me feeling great. I don't mind paying full price for games like this. It's worth it
I actually just finished Zero Dawn today, and I’m completely immersed in the lore of the game. I love lore heavy games. The sense of wanting to know more. What made it even better was that Aloy wanted to know more. It made it so much more meaningful that I wasn’t learning about a world that main character didn’t care about. I haven’t been this immersed in lore since I played through the Witcher games. Now I can get into Forbidden West, I’m so excited.
It’s really great when you see game developers actually give a shit about the game and not about how to squeeze as much money out of it as possible, I’ve spent 13 hours since it came out and honestly, it’s amazing, Truly spectacular, Guerilla really knew how to make a sequel
James! Holy fkn shit! Absolute banger of a video!
I spent 10 hrs just in the 1st settelment so far and there are still side missions left! Not only high quality content but also quantity!
I wasn't a big fan of HZD at 1st but I gave it a fair try, and HFW the sequel did not disappoint! In love with the game! Great video man!
Amazing review and 100% agree, funny but rarely does a game have me thinking about it all the time when not playing it
I finished the game. Now I am playing around testing playstyles and discovering the world. I love the gritty and rusty futuristics it has. Denoting our future is theirs past. Love the world. Facial and body animations and details are so natural that you don't pay attention them. There are some things I dont like but thats how it its with all games. Now back to HFW to uncloud those cloudy patches still lingers on my map.
Great video!
I really hope we get some Quen armor in a dlc or something.
I beat this game this past weekend, and I completely agree. Its the definitive sequel, every mechanic improved, while telling a direct continuing story from the first game. Probably the best modern example of world building in video games, everything feels like it was written intentionally, planned, and coordinated . . . not just sprinkled around the map under the Rule of Cool.
Been absolutely loving the game, really refreshing to see a sequel that both looks and feels so familiar to its' predecessor; your AC2-Brotherhood comparison was the perfect analogy for that.
The way Aloy talks about things she sees in the world was also a brilliant little detail, one I don't think I've ever seen done before. Little things like panning your camera towards an old watch tower and Aloy saying 'I wonder if I could climb up there' and then commenting on the view once she's up there, are just two examples I've seen in the opening.
Again, I'm having a blast with the game so far, and am beyond excited to hop back in!
I've played 3 hours of it and thought the exact same thing. It just does so much to honor the first game and even though its all new stuff it feels so familiar. I want more companies to please do something like this, add to the game and not take away from what we loved before...
Horizon Forbidden West has had the most interesting discourse I've seen recently.
A lot of varied opinions which is always appreciated whenever game discussion is involved.
Freaking love this game. It’s hard to stop playing it. Combat is thoroughly entertaining. Questing and activities are engaging. Music is fitting and immersive. Not to mention the world, art design, and facial animations are unbelievably gorgeous. Like, I frequently stop and just stare at what I’m seeing with a fat smile on my face.
I got this game yesterday and have already spent around 10 hours in the first area. The only thing that is disrupting the pace of the game for me is Photo Mode 😂
You sound so enthusiastic and happy bro regardless of the covid haha the passion on show here is awesome motivating me to pick up horizon
This game is incredible and Guerilla has done it again. Theres only 2 minor things that have bugged me: the split second blackscreen or popin when its tryna load stuff (probably will get fixed) and aloy looking around weirdly in sidequest dialogue which is prob just because of mocap.
Yeah the black screen thing is one of the only 'bugs' i've encountered that actually bothered me (I have gotten some pop ins but I personally don't really care). The screen does become normal again after a few seconds but it's a bit weird
Horizon Forbidden West is what Ubisoft thought they were doing when they moved to RPG. It's this type of game done perfectly. I haven't been this immersed in an open world since HZD. Even if there are moments of frustration in the game (and there are few, mostly combat-related), I go wander the world, find some ruin, find old recordings, just taking in the beauty of this world - and I just can't be mad at this game. This is obviously a work of love, just as HZD was.
Oh I didn’t realize you were the same guy that made the “Unexpected Success” video. I loved that one
I can't believe how epic Aloy's journey has become. I couldn't even begin to imagine. What an inspired story. I cried several times. An amazing sequel
Edit: I hope you give us a video on with your opinion of the story WITH spoilers!!! We have to talk about it!!
I've been waiting patiently for this.
Nobody disturb me for the next 23:25 mins.
Also really digging the beard.
Totally agree with you! I loved the first game and I love this one even more! I've not finished this one yet but I'm already completely obsessed with it and so happy with how much of a brilliant sequel it is.
The footage I’ve seen of this game looks amazing. Whenever a PS5 ends up in my hands this will definitely be on my list of games to acquire
Even on ps4 pro it looks phenomenal.
Great video James. Can't wait to start this game, it looks incredible.
I finished the main but overall game was at 64% , so I decided to start from scratch and do more of non main before I complete it a 2nd time , one of the best sequels ever done , are you watching bungee! This is how you do it , cant wait for the dlc and the next instalment. For me HZD and HFW we live in my top 5 games of all time , And I’m old and played a lot of games over the years
I'm astonished how the story so far seems very entertaining and fun .. didn't hear too many say that about the story . Seems weird cause man I'm really into it. Has depth to it
Great video, you are really well spoken here.
Loved this Video and you just earned a New sub 🙌
James have you been using resolution mode or performance mode. I’m using performance but notice I keep getting a shimmer on some of the background of shots or film grain so didn’t know if you came across this as well, what do you think? Great video
Love your reviews man! They're always passionate, very informative, and delve into the topics that I care about in good games. I'm just now starting a playthrough of Horizon Zero Dawn after finally snagging myself a PS5. I spent the better part of the last decade with Microsoft, waiting for a decent exclusive to be released, all the while watching Sony release exclusive after exclusive that I actually wanted to play (The Last of Us, Uncharted, God Of War, Ghost of Tsushima, etc.). I have a lot to catch up on. Keep fightin' the good fight.
You do hear how some people don't enjoy this game, but I feel like this game was made with me in mind because I'm absolutely in loving it.
I'm about 21 hours in, and I am absolutely in love with this game! The dynamics with new and returning characters, the new machines, the tweaks to old machines like adding new elements, the beautiful world, all the little things Aloy says to herself while you explore (there was one that was suspiciously similar to "Wind's howling "), it's all just so amazing
Just bought the sequel, and started playing it. God it's amazing
Incredible game. Too bad is not multi-platform and people try to hate it because of it.
Those back ejects made me think of you when I first did them this wk
I’ve heard amazing things about this game and your video helps show how good it is. I just wish the AC series could pull this off again like they did with AC Brotherhood to AC2. I miss the old AC quality with great story and character development. But great video man, definitely helps me to decide to buy it. Or might wait for it to come on pc in a year or two which would be awesome
I used to love AC but now I prefer Horizon!!
I even bought the ezio collection just to get my old AC fix!!!
Yeah it’s just amazing man. A perfect sequel
So far and I’m only about 5 ish hours in. Reminds me very much of the brotherhood transition from ac2 just like you said. It’s amazing, we could have already had a game of the year and it’s only February! What the!!
Been waiting for this review
One thing that simultaneously annoys me and makes me grateful is how Aloy mutters what the player should do. It's so hand hold-y but when Idk how the hell I go about a certain things, it's very helpful.
I love the game but another things that I noticed is that the same character models gets used in a lot of the side quests
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS👏👏👏
Literally just finished your zero dawn video and went to check if you uploaded one for the sequel and 25 minutes ago you did lol
Beautiful 👌🏻
Havent been able to play it much, but the first two hours gives me everything I need. I love that Aloy is all business. Sylens seems exactly like her, except his motivation are a bit skewed.
Put 40+ hours into this over 3 days, beat the story and am clearing up side missions and shit for the platinum... loving almost every minute of it!
Finished the game yesterday and it was a very lovely experience. 100 hours of pure joy and a bit of frustration too :D Will make my own review soon :)
You pointed out my biggest concern. I was worried that without the zero dawn mystery, I wouldn't be as pulled in as I am. I'm glad I was wrong and am still enjoying this game
Can't wait for the after the hype video 🤘
Horizon Forbidden West is awesome just imagine Horizon III for PS5, I am gonna play HFW for months can't wait for new DLCs
I can't wait to play this game and I'm so glad that a lot of the games I was looking forward to in 2022have been getting such great reviews
I think 2022 will be a return to a new Era of quality gaming
Having a great time playing Forbidden West, completed Zero Dawn recently and the story literally goes from Zero Dawn to Forbidden West straight away and i love it. The world is gorgeous, so many little side missions that have unique dialogues are incredible and the lore from collectibles too. I haven’t been in the Forbidden West long and there is so much to see and do it is Incredible and i love Guerrilla games for making these games.
i know its a small thing that doesn't come close to affect the game but I wish the game had a auto select feature. When you get the dialogue options while talking to a character I always pick all of them before ending the conversation I just wished there was an option to cycle through them all without the need to select each one manually.
That would be a cool feature tbf
Weird a lot of people were saying this is a terrible sequel
I brought this Friday it haven’t played it yet,
I’m really looking forward to it though.
Wishing you a good time with it!
I still need to finish zero dawn but I'm definitely getting this after
Beautiful game
It's really heartwarming to see this game getting the recognition it deserves. So far, my only complaint to this sequel is the fact that I thought we can play as one of the other characters once they completed some of their studies on how to use their Focus for combat.
Horizon Zero Dawn took a while to hook me, I think I was at least half way through before I had that moment where it came together for me. But by the time I got to the end I was hungry for more and pleased with the time I'd spent. When they announced a sequel I was pretty hyped and I've only heard good things about it now that it's out. I was going to wait to get a PS5 to play it, but I might buckle and buy it now.
It runs honestly pretty great considering it's cross gen. I'm on the pro and I'm very happy with my purchase. I'm only about 20 hours in and have quite a bit left to go, but it's downright addicting.
I 100 percent agree 💯 👍 I was a big fan of horzion zero dawn and the frozen wilds. Horzion forbidden west I bought on Friday pre-ordered from my gamestop got the ps5 physical edition 70 dollar version I'm taking my sweet time I'm loving horzion forbidden west a masterpiece to me so far one of the best games of the year for me. I'm also playing dying light 2 I'm also loving that 2 amazing sequels for me 😊
I managed to take a few days off work so I could soak in the atmosphere of forbidden west, I have not been disappointed, one thing I would note that has improved is the 60fps option jus makes combat so much more enjoyable.
I agree with you about the worry to try and remake the wheel, but felt reassured when I saw that even the HUD was just tweaked not completely changed. I love this game so far and just want to delve into every corner. I was just replaying HZD on PC and it got me so hyped for Forbidden west. My only thing is that on fidelity mode it feels like it drops the FPS well below 30fps, it just seems very rough so I have been playing in performance mode, anyone else have that experience? Overall ready to spend endless hours in this game and happy to watch your upcoming videos. Cheers!
I challenge you to travel from the Lake district in Cumbria to Essex and that the environment in the UK is all the same, that's not even including scotland or Wales.
Absolutely loving the game and taking my sweet time completing it: currently 34% in with 60 hours spent.
However, I do have three major gripes with HFW:
(1) Aloy spoils too many of the puzzle solutions too quickly and she constantly tells me to scan with the Focus, as if I were completely unfamiliar with it.
(2) Aloy has superhuman agility and stamina, but sometmes can't scale the most trivial of obstacles, just because she isn't intended to.
(3) Gear variety is all over the place and the upgrade system is very tedious and newly acquired gear has to be upgraded before it becomes an actual upgrade to your current gear - HZD handled this much better imo.
you know, i just hope we get to see that one area sylens was in at the end of zero dawn, like i wanna see what he did with hades, what the new AIs are, whats GAIA is doing, and what sylens did or at least back story on what he did
also i wanna see a technologically advanced group or something like a modern-day night city but with that old world style, maybe something like along the lines of fallout and rage in the postapocalyptic cities aspect that looked broken but also using technology
Honestly I’ve played a few hours and I had low expectations but it’s absolutely brilliant
Proud on my home country for this game 👌🇳🇱
HZD is my favourite game, but Forbidden West might just steal that spot. Both create a world to get lost in, that makes me explore every last inch of it. Or sometimes just sit on a hill and take in the scenery. And just about everything else you said in the video. Especially the writing and three characters are so damn good.
I have only a few very minor complaints:
- Higher tier weapons apparently use advanced versions of the ammo on the lower gear. But that better ammo needs rarer resources. Haven't progressed so far to judge house much of a problem that actually is, but I can easily see me being annoyed by that. I'm already having a hard time with all this micromanagement and keeping track of my inventory, so I'm not really looking forward to that. The same goes for the skills. I just get overwhelmed with the melee combos and different abilities for each weapon and all that. It seems a bit much.
- Can't whistle anymore when in stealth, always have to keep a few rocks to lure enemies.
- No indicator if you're visible to enemies anymore.
All that is far from being a deal breaker obviously, but still had to get it off my chest.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
im so excited, loved the first ALOT
I love how they did what I thought was going to happen with the AI's especially after completing the DLC, I did feel the ending did feel a little rushed but it was honestly an incredible sequel, but there was some small things I didnt like and some things I loved! I loved the ruins and hunting grounds and side quests!
Honestly I can’t believe you said “Among Them” without bursting into a fit of laughter. Madness.
There was another take that I cut where I absolutely did laugh 😂
I actually really like these “chill” reviews/videos. But I am really looking forward to seeing the forbidden west review. I am also just loosing myself in this game.
Out of all the PS4 games I've played so far, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us Part 2, and RDR2 are my favourite! I'm looking forward to playing Horizon Forbidden West once it comes down in price.
I finished the game, yesterday and it could be my game of the year. And i can't wait to play it again on ps5, i played on ps4 and had a lot of texture issues and pop in, but it didn't take away from my fun, but it was bad at some points.
This game is incredible, probably 15 total hours in and I have not 1/4 of the map. Writing, characters and visuals area amazing
Horizon is and always will be my favourite game ever (after Bloodborne). Given the cruel timing of the release(same year as ER, GOW,etc), I can see why Forbidden West will be overlooked initially, however once the dust is settled, I forsee that it'll be justifiably acknowledged for the staggering achievement that it truly is in the long term. At least I hope so. Whatever criticisms I've heard of it seem more directed towards it majorly only due to bandwagoners/console warriors, I understand the game isnt perfect, no game is, and I've some of my own too, but damn, it was one of my most memorable experience ever in gaming. It's absolutely breathtaking the improvements Guerilla has pulled off with FW in pretty much every aspect.
It is astounding how much this game has sucked me in. I knew I would really like it because I loved the first, but I'm constantly just getting distracted by new stuff in the distance, quests that I've stumbled on, buying new weapons/outfits and getting the necessary upgrade components for them from fighting machines, exploring huge areas underwater...it's kind of overwhelming but in a good way. So glad to be playing something that's keeping me hooked, I've lately needed a game that could do that for me
thx know I will play it
Im lovin this game. I have to agree with you.I have the same feeling as a kid when ac 2 and brotherhood came out.
The story (so far) is good, the gameplay is awesome, the skill tree was a bit overwhelming at first but you’ll get used to it. And just scraped the surface of this game a few hours in and i have lot of fun.
They did a really good job. A good game, with good story without any bullshit micro transactions or any other shit.
I just finished it in 2 days and it’s great
Ngl i b lined the story and can't wait to do the side quests
I haven't had a game sucker me in like that since rdr2 either, so maybe/hopefully this game will impact me the same way, I've been looking for a game to do that for me
The game is a masterpiece! nice analisys!
Didn’t even know this game came out. Oh well.
When they add their dlc and I know they will, they should add some gadget that helps you avoid instead of spamming dodge 16 times
There is an upgrade in one of the skill trees that gives you the ability to go invisible for a little bit to help you avoid conflict with machines
@@matthewsansom5180 I know. That’s not what I’m talking about
@@jeriah4k218 oh I gotcha! 👍
It looks really bad on my OLED. I dont know what's up.
I also highly agree with the contrast you did with AC Valhalla when it comes to the open world. I've done that comparison, myself. The world of Valhalla is much more of a barren wasteland than the literal post-apocalyptic Mojave Desert in Forbidden West.
I thought the pink chair was a dollhouse
If it wasn’t for school I would be finished with forbidden west because of how long I would play it
I miss James and the 4 pillars
Watching this video felt Nostalgic.
Horrizon forbiddened west united us again. Have fun everyone !
I was a little disappointed that you couldn't control underwater machines or fight underwater/in the sky. Also I was a little disappointed by the story dropping progress before the climax at which point Aloy is just trying to reclaim what was lost in the Hephaestus Cauldron and you don't accomplish your initial goal by the end. I hope they don't repeat what they did with Hades in the next one
I love HZD, soooo excited for HFW, I loved the games combat and world building, and this sequel looks like it improves on the first, and surpasses it, for me, TLOU 2, HZD, God of War and Marvel's Spiderman PS4 and some of the most beautiful and breathtaking game's I've played, brilliant story, writing, and the game play all amazing!
When u get to the finale of HFW, please lmk 1 thing, does this final battle surpass or is it at least as good as the one from HZD? 🤔😃
See Assassin's Creed? This is how you make the whole world scalable while maintaining some realism in it, but more importantly a level design
Wait did nil return from zero dawn
30 hours in. Great experience so far
Are you making a ac4 retrospective
Might do when the 10 year anniversary rolls around.
I know you don't normally play Lego games James (other than for a certain video), but given how the next Lego Star Wars game is going to be, would you mind making a play through series of it? the game being Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (release date April 5th 2022), although if you do play it, you should probably play Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (2007) first, since that was the original game to feature all the movies (well, the movies that were around as of 2007), I know there's also Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars (2011) and Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2016), but Lego Star Wars 3 was just about the first couple season of The Clone Wars show, while the other one was only about The Force Awakens, also, playing The Complete Saga could show how the Lego Star Wars games have come since that game to The Skywalker Saga.
just asking, you obviously don't have to do this if you don't want to.
I love Lego games, I've played tons of them in my time but Star Wars is easily the one I've played the most, I played the shit out of it as a kid and still jump back in sometimes as an adult, Complete Saga is easily one of the greatest video games out there, Skywalker Saga looks insane.
We'll actually be streaming it Co-op on Horsey & Fox when it launches, so drop us a sub over there and you can join us or watch the VODs czcams.com/users/LazerzZNetwork
@@LazerzZ oh, did not know that, good.
Loved this game but the only thing i can complain about is the graphics. I played on resolution mode as the 30fps ran like a slideshow for me, and even though the up close shots were mesmerizing it became all too common that I would look 100m in the background and notice how awful the world looked. I'm not sure if this is due to my monitor that doesn't use HDR and isn't 'top of the range' but when i played tlou2 it ran like a beautiful movie with perfect frames. Anyone else got this issue??
i aggree with u its an amazing games man
My biggest issue with the game without playing it is that it costs $130 Australian on the PS store. I’ll wait for a sale. Btw good to see James genuinely enjoying a game again, it’s been a while
i played HZD and loved the story. I needed the sequel for years now. Now that its here, i have put 40 hrs into the game. Still not finished. Found out the game has been review bombed...which...ugh. Trolls. Giving a 0 because its "buggy". I havent seen a single bug, and as i said, i have damn near 40 hrs in.
Need more horizon vids
