Make sure the sphagnum is damp & saturated before sterilising in the microwave
Gotta say. This video fills me with hope for my own terrariums.
Made my first today. Foraged from the local area. But growing my own moss would obviously be more ideal. And this tutorial is exactly what I needed to see.
Howd it go?
@@Blind_Bear Extremely well.
I like you and your positivity! Thank you and keep it up! ❤
Thanks I’ve been looking to grow moss❤
Most Perfect video I´ve ever seen. Really impressed.
Thank you so much. i will try this. i have lots of moss in the garden...i can easily dry it on the wood burner...and grow my aquarium moss in it. love your videos.
Yay i have waited so long for this ☺
Nice, I have a few dozen containers of moss, many different kinds, and use it to protect the dirt from the sun and rain in cups with strawberry seedlings. I just grow the moss on bare soil, and put just enough water in the support tray every day to keep everything going~
How many time spray water in a day?
I never spray water, the dirt wicks the water from the tray below. I pour some water in the bottom of each tray most every day, which is sooo much faster than spraying~
I had an old bad of half used potting soil and I harvested the best moss from the bag to start my propogation indoors. Despite not having sphagnum on hand this hould turn out well hopefully since it was harvested from the soil it's currently sitting on.
tried it with java and cushion and to my surprise it worked! I placed it near a window for bright indirect light.
Thanks for this tutorial
That’s great to hear!
great video - do you ever open the container as the moss is growing? do you water or let the initial watering recycle the water?
Second I love your videos cause they inspired me in making terrium

thanks for this video!
Glad it was helpful!😃
Thanks for the video I have been Obsessed with terrariums and I even ordered some tools and I'm going down to the shop tomorrow to get moss and stuff like that oh and what lights do you use for terrariums?
Great tutorial! I have to cover parts of a metal chair/table Parisian style with moss for a work project. Any suggestions? I am doing research now. Will gluing moss on hurt it? Thank you!
What do you use to record your footage? Love the vids
Can you use (whatever) dry moss, as a supstrate for propagating more moss instead of sphagnum?
Thank you bro
Can I ask you to go on further explanation for the cushion moss ???
Hello, do you use any hydroponic fertilizer to support the growth? Thanks!
Amazing video! I have a question:
Is it possible to propagate in a different kind of soil? I am lacking a microwave, but I have spaghnum. I wonder if I can mix it with other type of soil, so that spaghnum is still there, but in less quantity.
I think we have big tank and design as like you, so make my fish is so cool
is there a cheaper option than the sphagnum ?
Thanks for your video, I found it very informative. What is the ideal temperature range for moss to grow without too many problems?
I stick to household temperatures. Not too warm or too cold.
Does this work for all moss/most moss? i am not too familiar with the different types of moss yet, but i do want to try with the ones i have: fern moss, pipe cleaner moss, coral lichen and fork moss
Great video. I wonder if you know whether this method would work with "delicate fern moss" - aka thuidium? I have been collecting moss and putting them in domed seed sprouters with LED lights and air vents. I haven't yet tried chopping up any moss, so I'm thrilled with the potential. But, I had to order (and pay dearly for) the fern moss. If this method works on it, my purse would be grateful!
This is gr8
If you laid down a plastic screen between the spghagnum and Java moss, will it grow attached to the screen?
Would coco coir or perlite work too? I have a ton from repotting my Philodendrons.
can you use a toaster oven to sterilize the sphagnum moss?
The video of the propagation of the moss is very nice. I want to ask you but how much what the spagnum moss in general, less than 5 euros I hope... Where can I withdraw it? from a nursery, from a terrarium shop ?.. How much moisture do they need? How often should I moisten ? How many springtails do I wear? Aren't they in danger of eating moss? What do they feed on once the decaying matter is finished, or in general? Thank you and regards
Thanks for the vid - can you use dried sphagnum moss instead of the live one/ Microwave it etc ? Is there a place you trust/ recommend to buy moss online?
Yes. It’s use is for substrates, so if you water it it will hold it very well, but it wont come back to life😊
hi newbiee here, wondering if it works with isopods instead of springtails
Nice 👌
Quick question where do you recommend buying your springtails also I love your videos
I've got my colonie by my local pet store. If they have reptile stuff just ask them.
U can trap springtails in the wild just using wood coal add that on bottle with little water, after that burry the bottle on soil
Reptile expos. You can order them online too. My fave place is Bio Dude in Houston.
Is compost or basic soil a good enough soil to make it grow?
Takes ❤
Can you do that with brought live moss from the store? Any kind of moss?
Thanks for the informative video mate!
Do you need LED lights to accomplish this or will simple white light work?
Would recommend indirect sunlight near a window.
can you grow the moss without the substrate?
hey if we dont have spagnam moss if we can use some soil
what is the best temperature to propagate moss? As I live in north India, where temperature range is 2-48 degrees celsius.
Can't we use any other substrate like soil or something rather than sphagnum moss??
can i use moss from my yard as starters?
its opened every day? or its still close until 6 weeks?
Hey, I was wondering would any type of sphagnum moss do? Or do you need some specific type(s)/do some work better than others?
Any type of sphagnum should work. They’re a renowned type of moss for being capable of holding water several times their own weight.
if i dont have dry moss to use what can i use for the substrate i see that moss grows on everything
What could be used as an alternative for spagnum moss? Since its not exactly available in some parts of the world.
You can also easily use other moss that has the same functions as sphagnum moss 😉
Coco coir is a wonderful substitute
Where do you get your springtails from?
Great vids thanks ! About cushion moss do you trim it ?
It won’t damage the moss too much if you trim it, so if you deem it necessary you don’t have to worry.
@@QuintenTillemans thanks for the answer but the question was does trimming encourage new sprout with cushion moss 😊
@@RetroChallenge Oh, my bad😅 I didn’t mean to. To be honest, I’m not sure if it encourages growth. Though I think it does, because often plants react that way on trimming.
i have drain flies/moth flies in my half submerged moss(75gallon planted tank). the drain fly eggs and moss came from the guppy grass i ordered from florida. yay. seems impossible to get rid of these things. last time i ordered amazon sword plants from eB** they came with an actual leech. not sure i should order plants from eB** anymore. any tips on getting rid of drain flies/moth flies out of fish tanks with floating plants? killing them every day by hand is not helping. they dont seem to care about liquid traps. im about to throw all plants out
Can i use sterilized cocopeat?or aquasoil?
Could i use peat in place of regular sphagnum moss? I've a whole bag of it from a previous project i need to use
moss is non-vascular, has no roots. The medium you use does not matter. What is important is that it retains moisture and moss needs to be wet to grow. Peat would work but the benefit of using sphagnum is that it reduces chance of mould outbreaks. Peat is essentially decomposed spahgnum. However it is not sustainable!!!!!!
Can i replace the sphagnum moss with peat moss ?
Can moss be based for orchird?
Do you need ventilation holes?
Can this moss be brought outside after ?
Is charcoal or activated carbon not needed?
Any alternative for Sphagnum moss?
Mine grew tons of mold, where'd I mess up? I dont think I oversaturated it
What brand/size container is this?
Are you using distilled water or tap water? What is the PH of used water .Thanks for video❤
I think as a general rule, don't use tap water for any plants 😊
Where does that red sphagnum moss come from?
How often does the moss need to be watered?
can u make a video how to raise/ propagate spring tails?
Get some compost rich soil with tiny pieces of bark and a few leafs and a hardy plant in it, put it outside a window keep it moist not soggy, they will come in thousands. Btw, would recommend picking bark and some soil in nearby woods/forest to mix in that pot.
@@Attilakrieger ill try, living in a big city, ive to buy mostly everything
Spring tails necessary?
Can I use something else than sphagnum moss? Or run it with a piece of wet cloth or something i can have at home or buy at a supermarket?
thats my question as well found an answer ?
Bro...how are you housing your springtails? It looks easier than what I am doing.
never mind. Just found your vid on it.
what if i don't have access to sphagnum, what other alternatives are good options?
I propagate and sell moss, you can use soil preferably high acidic as moss found in the wild thrive on highly acidic soil.
Create drainage levels prior to adding moss. Add gravel or pea rocks, preferably activated charcoal to cut down on any mold/ disease. Use a screen on top then place soil. If you collect moss outdoors, use the soil it’s already thriving in.
I throughly wash any of my collected outdoors moss with distilled water first and then add it to the soil.
Moss thrives in the wild without Sphagnum moss. It’s definitely not a necessity in propagation.
Are plant is a must for terrarium?
If not, how much different to take care without plant.
Mosses are mostly very low maintenance. They receive moisture and nutrients from the air around them and they don’t need much light. If you don’t add a difficult plant in your terrarium it might even make caring for yours easier.
It doesn't need airflow?
What do spring tails eat?
Hello, is there another way to sterilise the sphagnum moss if I don’t have a microwave?
same here , is there alternative wat to sterilise the sphagnum moss?
Any chance you sell a little of each moss?
I have cushion moss growing on my property. Should i remove the soil that it is growing on before adding it to the tub?
The soil from outside can contain critters and maybe diseases. Washing the moss a few times in a bowl of water, maybe sterilized water, can never hurt. You can get sterilized water easily if you have a clothesdryer that doesn’t dispose of the water but stores it in one of those little container like drawers.
can i use this method to propagate fern moss? i coudnt search propagation method for fern moss both on youtube and google, pls help me T_T
Fern moss is an easy species to care for. This method is perfect for it.
Can I use coco peat instead of sphagnum moss?
Probably, it's worked fine for me
😮
Do you need to remove the lid occasionally to let in fresh air?
I personally do that to check if it smells alright or funky, every 3 or 4 days, I also check if moisture is around the box or if it needs a little more spray, it usually doesn't if the container has a tight enough lid.
@@Attilakrieger don't you think 3 to 4 days is too much? Twice a month should garantee a safe smell check, not?
@heather4805 You are probably right, I'm dealing with big boxes and still working out how different species react over time. But yes, if the lid is air-tight and not in direct sun, 15 in 15 days might be more than enough, sure.
@@Attilakrieger oh ok, that's so interesting! Good luck on your studies, do whatever works out for you :)
Made my own bonsai out of trees that are only native to my Southwest Missouri area. I put moss on top of the dirt and it looks really good.... I was hoping folks may wanna buy em ... Any interested?
Can I use dirt instead of spagnum moss?
Yea brotha
Hi!
would fern moss work too?
Absolutely
Can u use plastic bag?
My moss won't spread. It grows long and thin and straight up
Do you need to keep spraying daily
The lid prevents the water from escaping. I recommend spraying it down every time you check on it. Besides that the water won’t be lost, because the plant recycles the water by evaporation.
If you don’t have a microwave can you use boiling water?
Yes that works:)
how long u sterilised using boil water? and how u dry it after boiling ?
>how to grow moss
>first start with moss
hahaha
I just put mine on a screen so extra water can drain out, and spray it daily with water and plant food. dont need the other moss.
What are Springtails, please?
springtales are little insects that eat mold
Thanks so much@@black_c3t490
for 6 week no water just on the first day?
yes! If the lid is closed all the time.
Do a aquascaping video😶
the link "Currently unavailable.
We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."
I just did this and it’s been about a month.
I took moss from the crack in the sidewalk and it was very lush and green. I put it in a container of sphagnum exactly like yours and I even put a rock in it to see if some would adhere to the rock.
A month later and it’s all brown and no growth. It’s keep moist and dark. This is my second attempt and I can’t get it.
if im not wrong he said he placed it where it gets 12 hours of LED uv light a day. so maybe thats what ur missing
Yes, the problem is lack of light. Moss needs light in order to thrive.
Make sure to not over water your moss if it's in a sealed container, also like the reply before me said, try twelve hours of LED or indirect sunlight.
smegmamoss
Omg I alwayssssss overwater my moss
Where can i buy moss??
Alot of shops. You can also find it outside
Why would you buy moss 😭 ...
Just go outside .
@@Reaelbread Maybe there are people which are living in subtropical zones which is very dry? Yes of course you can get moss from outside.
How to find moss 😅?
So to grow moss you have to buy moss first ?
well... how were you planing to do it? Water raw dirt and expecting there to appear moss?
You don't have to buy it, moss is almost everywhere if you really look.
@@Obama_sin_Laden not really if you live in a urban equatorial area but i get your point
helloo😁
