Solána Imani Rowe (born November 8, 1989), known professionally by her stage name SZA (/ˈsɪzə/ SIZ-ə), is an American singer-songwriter. She first gained recognition through her self-released extended plays (EPs), See.SZA.Run (2012) and S (2013), which helped her become the first female artist to sign with Top Dawg Entertainment. Her third EP, Z (2014), was her first project to be released to digital retailers and reached the top-ten on the US Independent Albums chart.
After signing a joint recording contract with RCA Records, SZA released her debut studio album, Ctrl (2017). It was met with critical and commercial success, earning four Grammy Award nominations and becoming the second longest-charting R&B album by a female artist on the Billboard 200. The following year, SZA was nominated for the Golden Globe and Academy Awards for Best Original Song via her collaboration with Kendrick Lamar on the US and UK top-ten single "All the Stars". Her featured appearance on Doja Cat's "Kiss Me More" broke the record for the longest-running all-female collaboration within the US top-ten, and won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
SZA's second album, SOS (2022), spent ten non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 and broke the record for the largest streaming week for an R&B album in the US. Supported by six singles, including the top-ten songs "Good Days", "I Hate U", "Nobody Gets Me" and "Snooze", SZA earned her first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Kill Bill" in 2023. She later earned her second chart-topping single of the year with her guest appearance on Drake's "Slime You Out".
SZA has received multiple accolades throughout her career, including an American Music Award, a Guild of Music Supervisors Award, two Billboard Women in Music awards (including Woman of the Year), and a nomination for a Brit Award. As a songwriter, she co-wrote Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé's song "Feeling Myself".

I think the frank ocean and SZA parallels are so true, they both have released incredibly personal bodies of work while remaining guarded and protective over their personal lives.
Sza outsold frank riverswamp
Also both scorpios, so it makes sense that their so private
I always say this but Sza and Frank are the Adam and Eve of music
@@Peterrdeeur a weirdo especially considering sza is friends w frank
The only difference now is that SZA is much bigger
CTRL’s longevity is INSANE to me. Like I literally go back and listen to it all the time, and it still sounds so fresh.
TRUE
YESSS
Really ? I will listen 2
i know! it just never gets old??? and there’s a song for every feeling in there lol.
What I really love about SZA’s songs specially the ones from CTRL is like you feel like it’s a conversation like she’s talking to you, you are having a pleasant conversation with her. That feeds my soul idk why
SZA’s success and longevity is so impressive. The fact that she came back after 5 YEARS and dropped a long 20 song album, and became even bigger than before is wildddd. Most artists who do something like that would become massive flops.
Quality speaks for itself
I think Tik Tok has a lot to do with it
I didn't realize CTRL is already old.
@@jadagarcia7673well, ctrl was mind blowing and so good. many fans were anticipating it. Tik tok doesn’t have anything to do with it. Maybe for new people but millions new about ctrl

I think SZA’s resilience to fear enables her to keep developing her sound and write such honest lyrics - something I think more of us wish we had. Great video 👏
SZA and Frank are some of the best songwriters of our generation
Agreed❤
yess. they are both my favorites and to see both their albums on the screen like that was beautiful lol I found my people!

This was done so tastefully and thoughtfully. Including a black womans perspective was also helpful and validating for black women fans. Good job.
she has over 80 unreleased songs... Hope every song will come to us - her fans!!
Probably closer to over 500 tbh, but I agree with you 🙏
@@MilliardBeats could be, yes 💔💔💔💔

I literally just listened to the whole album before being suggested this video. SZA’s music is a way of life. Her music isn’t for everybody. It’s for those who have very deep emotions. An internal diary. They make everyone smile and feel warm but inside they are thinking so much. The popular loner. Her music breaks you down because of the words and it feels exactly how you do but it also heals you bc over time those same songs aren’t so hard to sing or listen to anymore.
I remember I cried so hard one day and had “Far” on loop BALLING my eyes out. It played probably 20 times. I had just gotten my heart shattered by a person and I decided that was the last time. SZA’s music is like seasons of life. CTRL held me over because that was my state of mind and those were my college years. Literally remember hotboxing with my roommates many days to that album and Jhene Aiko Trip album lmao. Listening to those albums with our house party speaker, watching the lights go to the music. Just a vibe in our small college town.
SOS is coming out of that stage of life, finally moving on from those people that broke me. Figuring out life day by day. It like i’m down but i’m not staying here. SOS starts strong, leads into the emotion and then end with Good days saying despite all I believe in good days. I gotta do this for me. Forgiveness is like the final F you. I’m moving on. I forgive you but we’re done and stay away from me because the last time was your last chance. SOS for me is being 25 and really seeing how things are with life in reality. I don’t feel like that sheltered kid that grew up with religion constantly shoved down their throat. Growing up in the suburbs where you aren’t white but the black kids dont always welcome you either because you’re a “white black girl” whatever that means.
SZA is like Sade. Idk if SZA could go as long without making music but as far as their last work still being played like it came out yesterday, says a lot. It’s like Sade is so timeless she doesn’t have to make anymore music but it would be nice. Same with SZA. SZA and I’s birthdays are 4 days apart so it feels like no wonder I relate to her so much. Idek if I could call myself just a SZA fan but not in an obsessive way.
The SOS tour date in nashville changed my life. It was like I was in another world. I cried so hard dining and she made it feel so personal truly making eye contact and holding it with us sitting by the stage. The engineering was PHENOMENAL!!! I felt so complete but was so depressed for like 3 weeks after bc of course my crush I went with broke my heart two days after so here I am a little over a month later and the album is healing me all over again ❤️🩹
❤❤❤
Well said Queen❤
beautiful
Wow , you explained that so beautiful 🥺🥺😭😭
this was beautiful omg🥺❤️
She's a very impressive young woman. I'm 41 and so I prefer a lot of older hip hop, rap, r&b (and music in general), but I absolutely dig Sza. She has an insane talent for combining genres (and does it successfully) Plus she derived her name from the Rza! Very freaking cool
SZA is close to your age lolol she is 34, but people think she is younger.
I'm 40 and listen to my Era but SZA is definitely one of my favorite artists. Ella's Mai, Jhene Aiko, Alicia Keys,Teyana Taylor, a lil Summer Walker, and a few others. I like real RandB and people who write their own music
@@nikkiserena1320 So much talent there. Alicia Keys is fascinating. She was like a child prodigy, I believe, playing piano masterfully at a young age.
I'm 46 and listen to all eras of music but constantly look for new music..my favorites now are Kendrick for hip hop and Sza for r&b..they both seem to speak right to my soul, mind and heart..seen them both in concert twice and love the energy in the crowds even thou most are way younger than me
2011 sza era had me shook. Her essence hasn't changed, but the production quality has.
Everyone loves a humble princess. That’s basically the energy she gives
what a loving portrait of her work, thank you!
I’ll never forget when cntrl came out. One of my favorite albums til this day. It’s very nostalgic for me. SZA is a young classic. She’s still putting out straight bangers.
I don't know what I would do without her music... it's so special and conforting for me
No fr
I agree it’s gotten me thru so much.
Same I just lay in my bed with a calming spirit when listening to her songs
As soon as I heard her at 15/16 I knew she would end up big. Now I’m 26 and it’s nice to see how far she’s come. I went to her concert at 19 and it was at a smaller venue but now she would need a big one and sells out fast.
Same! 😭 I started listening to her when I was 17 now I’m 27 and I’m so happy to see how far she’s come! I saw her at MSG when she did a show in NYC and it was outstanding. I’m so grateful I got to experience SOS in person, it made me fall in love with the album even more which I didn’t know was possible.
❤❤❤
I started listening to her when I was 16/17 but now I’m 23 years old.
I was listening to her when I was a teen too but I wasn’t aware she wasn’t mainstream because I didn’t follow her like that
Aw, let’s give the friend a round of applause cause who knows if SZA would’ve been where she is today or even proud of her music if it wasn’t for her friend pushing her to have her album listened to by others. We need more friends like that!! ♥️
Personally, Z and CTRL is the reason I fell in love with SZA's artistry. I'm not a fan of SOS at all outside of like 4 songs but.. I'm hoping her next era will reign supreme because what she gave us before she hit mainstream was really special.
Mainstream always changes things. Those darned contracts.
Can you tell which are those 4?
@@vismayavijoy4818 Seek & Destroy, Gone Girl and Blind really but... let's just add Good Days to make it four lol. Everything else just gets skipped over by me
pls pls PLS go back and listen to open arms, used, snooze, forgiveless
Z was the first album i heard and i was SHOOK
I see why Rihanna put her on Anti . Sza old music fits perfectly with Rihanna’s discography especially Rated R
She's an amazing artist, everytime she drop its an masterpiece. Always dropping classics too
Ice moon is literally one of my fav sza songs 🥺 such a gem.
Literally
❤❤❤
Her early music is the SZA I fell in loveee with. I wish she would go back to that every now and then because she does it so well
Man, I vividly remember listening to CTRL when she was fairly unknown, and she blew up a few years after. It's crazy. She deserves everything that comes her way!
Her early mixtapes are a must have. Still rock them to this day.
The Ctrl album helped me get through a breakup in 2017. Sza will always have a place in my heart. Her music has so much depth!
sza has opened up a little bit on who some of her songs are about . like on nobody gets me, she said that’s about her ex fiancé who cheated on her and blocked her . but how she still feels something for him even though how bad he wronged her .
I only discovered CTRL in 2020, and it shocked me it came out in 2016. It still sounds like it could have just dropped last week. Her staying power is CRAYYYYYZZYY.
It was 2017 if that was what you meant
Warm winds with Isaiah Rashad is the most beautiful and legendary song that will probably be the last one I play in my head 🌸
Yesssss
I love SZA so much. Since the very beginning 🥺
SZA's "Ctrl" definetly resonates with people growing up with its progressive R&B, masterfully crafted vocals and lyrics perfectly fit for growing adults and teenagers. This album definetly resonated with me because it took me on an emotional journey while literally TRASCENDING with the beats. It will definetly be a memorable album for a long time.
Sza creates timeless music no matter your age you can relate she created relatability so broad that every generation can relate she mixed so many genres and captured the most important eras of music all in one album ppl can tap into their emotions and connect and that's what makes her unique
Timeless
she is put into the R&B category, but she is truly a pop artist. I think it has to do with her race. Adele and Sam Smith were considered Pop when they did a primarily R&B sound. Not sure why SZA can’t be both to capitalize on the awards and recognition for both categories/genre. They really need to explain why she is R&B
I think she sings in an rnb type way. And Sam Smith and Adele, yes I would agree they are soul
@@Joejoyoyoyo is soul different from R and B!?? I still believe it is race based. If Adele sang the same songs as SZA in the same tone, it would be considered pop
@@dmoneytrees do you think Justin Bieber singing snooze is rnb or pop? 🤔
@@Joejoyoyoyo r and b
@@dmoneytrees well, yeah
When Ctrl was released it was a complete coincidence that I found it.. I randomly found SZA in a listicle of the best new albums, because I was trying to mix up my music taste. it could not have come at a better time for me!! In September 2017 I moved into my very first apartment, got my very first car, and was just stepping into the world after college graduation... I listened to this album non fucking stop for at least a month, singing every word and memorizing every little sound, full of joy and fear at all the life ahead of me... this album is unforgettable to me, I feel so attached to it that I feel a little sting of defensiveness whenever anyone says they like it too 😂 I love SZA, she is an incredible artist and I am so glad she decided to make music. ❤❤
I remember following her on Datpiff when she just had a minor Following. And fell in love with SEE SZA RUN. And how big she grew since then so incredibly proud.
Ew Datpiff? I bet your like 30 😂

This breakdown is magical thank you for capturing her beauty and humanness and honoring her legacy. Made me tear up
Her EPs were my favorite music she's made to date.
I truly think drew Barrymore might one of the most beautiful songs ever made by a human on this planet
And Barrymore plays a character in Donnie Darko who says "cellar door" is the most beautiful phrase in the English language. Just saying 😂
1000 percent. Soooooo ethreal 😢
Somebody get the tacos!
So good. My favorite sza song for sure
I'm an old hip hop head who doesn't listen to rnb except for maybe just one Jill Scott song, Lauryn Hill, Beyoncé and Erykah Badu. SZA is now my other exception, a few singles of hers got my attention in the 2010s but it was SOS that made me a fan. She's exceptional!
Still listening to Broken Clocks and its fresh every time.
when I listen to SZA i hear these influences Erykah Badu, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bjork, Aaliyah, Wu Tang, Nina Simone, etc.
she is the PERFECT boiling pot of Soul, Hip Hop, Art Pop, Alternative, & Singer-Singwriter...
Art pop? That’s a Gaga thing. Not a genre descriptor.
@@DeathtotheAshes you do knoe the te artpop existed before Gaga 😂
You and sza are both underrated
Wow, that was an amazing Video 💯💯💯
I've been enjoying SZA's music since I heard ctrl the 1st time, and your video made me realize that I was really just focusing on the music, story telling and the emotions without even knowing anything about her personal life. That's why she truly deserves to be on of the greatest RnB artist of our generation 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Yes!! her music reaches in your soul and gives you a hug. It feels so personal to each individual listener, even though of course it came from SZA's life alone. Just amazing
Also, Sza and Lauryn Hill went to same high school in Jersey
man you talk about how amazing some of these people are but have you ever been told how amazing it is to listen to your videos? the calm and crisp atmosphere with relaxing and chill music in the background while I sit down and hear you talk passionately about your own thoughts and feelings on particular things. i really enjoyed this video. thanks for sharing your breakdown and analysis' to the world. much love
sza is such an inspiration, love her lyrics, her and her music
Loooooooove SZA - Z is where I first heard her and been a fan every since. She’s unapologetically herself, vulnerable and talented. I appreciate her So SO much and hope she keeps up her creativity forever.
I love that you mentioned some of her deep cuts like “Ice Moon” & “Sweet November” !!! Very underrated 💎’s…
So grateful to have seen her live when she came to New Zealand months following the drop of CTRL and DAMN! Still one of the best concerts I’ve been too
It’s hard to put into words… but Z did so much to me on an emotional level. It’s insane to me that it wasn’t equally monumental to other people also. The same way the Internet is so timeless and channel orange is. It sits with you when you’re riding alone going through every day life shit and hits you right in the inter personal feels
I wish more people listened to Z for that reason
this talented woman was truly a gift given to us. i just recently got out of a breakup situation. i found her i hate u song. i was immediately hooked. i wanted to hear more so i went over to her SOS album and became obsessed. whats also crazy is i remember hearing songs by her on the radio over the years (ex: broken clocks) when i was younger but never actually knew it was her or what the songs were about or even who she was. i cant wait to see what her career in the next few years has for her :)
now im going back and exploring all of her old music because i just cannot get enough lmao.

thank you for making this. I’ve loved Sza for 10 years now, i started listening to her in highschool when Z came out (accidentally found her when i was into “witch house” lol). It’s been amazing seeing her growth and just falling in love with her music more and more over the years. Her music has made me laugh, cry, feel so many things. It’s something I can always go back to and get something new out of it
What a luvly tribute to her...you went over and above highlighting all her virtues...great great video..wow enjoyed this one!
Absolutely amazing video, the conclusion has me worked up emotionally. Fantastic work
I really love this video. Thanks for dropping this during ♏season. Sza and Frank are both 🦂 who know how to put their feelings out there without actually letting us in. I think part of why we love them so much is that we will never fully know who they are. They experience life and all its perils and after sifting through their experiences they share what they've learned. I almost cried when you said, "An ocean of feelings and sounds that exists in its own world..." and "rejection and loneliness can bring about new growth." You explained why I love her music and you also explained feelings I've had but dont always know how to word. Thank you for speaking almost solely on her music and sound. Most people have so much heat and negativity for her (i get people are allowed their opinions) As a black woman when she hit the tumblr scene way back when I was so enamored. I, too, was the chocolate chip in the cookie at school for a while growing up. I understand being in spaces where when people did finally look like me, they still weren't always like me. Her music and vibe was one that I rarely saw in artists that looked like me. I finally actually related. Over the years her music has been with me and grown while still being relatable enough to truly digest on a deeper level. I appreciate her music so much and wish she knew how much she impacts the women like me who really hear her, and understand.
I just saw her in person too and this video made me wanna cry over how much I love her
A musician’s musician is honestly a great description of exactly who she is. She’s a legend naturally. Plus your delivery of everything. *chefs kiss* I love her 😭💗 and I love this video and I’m subscribed

This was a really thoughtful and beautiful video. I’m not a huge SZA fan and I’m not sure how I came across this video, but it made me tear up for some reason. I hope she sees this somehow and feels proud of herself. New subscriber here!
Watching this kind of made me emotional. I’ve been a fan since 2014. I remember listening to SeeSZARun and S and of course Z. I remember anticipating CTRL when at the time it was originally gonna be called A. I haven’t heard SOS yet because like I said as a day one fan seeing all the changes she’s gone though with her sound and appearance I felt like I was losing her. I know that sounds weird but idk I took it really personal. Probably too personal. But I fell in love with how original her sound was back then. Thank you so much for making this.

Sza is just naturally blessed ❤.....
Period.
what a heartfelt review. by the end i felt i was listening to motivational speech. SZA's art is truly a musical journey and i now i understand why she gets the love/hate commentary she does, she's dynamic, fluid, human, supernatural, and doesn't fit "the box" as an artist and she OWNS that, that's was makes her timeless and iconic. She doesn't fit a standard, she is the standard and thats hard for some people to grapple with because she's so vast in her artistry people cant keep up with that.
This video has given something I needed working on my EP it’s a scary feeling
This video was beautifully put together! Your closing statement brought tears to my eyes & will probably stick with me forever. Truly grateful ❤
