    St Senan's Abbey?church
This early church was built in the Early Georgian period, with a tower being added in 1756. It was abandoned after the construction of St Senan's, and is now a ruin. It sits on the site of a 6th-century church founded by St Senan.

Amazing ruins with a 1717 plaque still intact! What an awesome find Sue. The big mausoleum at the back and the beautifully carved one with the round opening belong to the Colthurst Family. (I think they have 4 vaults in this graveyard) In the smaller one, Sir Nicholas (1789-1829) was interred in a lead coffin then sealed into 2 wooden coffins. You have to google what happened to this crypt in 1895 Sue.OMG! Really enjoyed your adventure today. Thank you. Deb of Oz.

The Colthurst family were extensive landowners in county Cork and Sir Nicholas’s father and grandfather had both represented Cork constituencies in the Irish parliament. He was returned for the city largely as a result of government support and was an independent supporter of administration throughout his parliamentary career. He had defeated a staunch pro-Catholic Member, Hely Hutchinson, and as the Catholic interest at Cork was so significant, their claims were always his major problem. He had privately assured ministers that he opposed Catholic relief

One of my favorite hobbies is walking through cemeteries and reading the stones, exploring the mausoleums, etc. I've been told it's creepy but to me it's almost like a history lesson in a way and isn't creepy at all. My mom and her mother also share this same hobby but my kids do as well. Once they were old enough, we'd find different cemeteries to go to and wander around reading and exploring for hours sometimes. I'm from the southern part of the US so there are some amazing places to go; We'd find cemeteries EVERYWHERE and many of them are absolutely incredible, especially way out in the country where their existence is mostly forgotten, so we were honestly paying respects and remembrance to the many forgotten people in those old secluded cemeteries. It's been awhile since I've roamed a cemetery and your videos make me feel like I'm right there with you so thanks for that!

I just checked why the lock mite be upside down. I think it's because they have had the doors made & the hinges are built on the wrong side for the doors opening inwards or outwards. So they turn the doors upside down & maybe back to front. So if you see a plane door with a key hole upside down . There is a good chance that there mite be a nice pattern on the inside. You will have to keep an eye open for the locks & then check if the hinges are on the inside or outside. Just a bit more stuff to look for on your adventures. I have seen this on church doors that's how I noticed it. I imagine it would have been to expensive to make new doors for little mistakes like the side the hinges are shown.

I’m just wondering re the so old and very new grave sites here.
Here in Australia there is still some cemeteries that are reserved for those who where born and died in the area only (usually small country towns)
We have a cemetery like that not far from us.
It wasn’t until around 10yrs ago that permission was given to those who have passed away to be buried there that hadn’t been born in the area.
Since this was allowed the cemetery has grown around 5 times the size it originally was.
All the original graves are at the front of the cemetery and all the newer ones at the back of these.
The only way you can be buried at the front of the cemetery is if you have direct links to those who were original settlers and are already buried there.

@@SerenitySueGraveyards my apologies for my slow reply. I am currently carrying for my mother who is fighting a losing battle with glioblastoma. Anyways, I actually explore abandoned buildings from time to time and the idea of someone getting inside that mausoleum is actually not that difficult in my head. All there would need to be was an opportunity where no one was around, or it to be late at night. All you need is someone to boost you up to the window or to bring a ladder, and once you're past the window you pretty much have free reign of the entire mausoleum. I find that quite sad however, as when I explore I explore abandoned buildings without human remains inside them. You are extremely respectful while visiting these individuals in their final resting place and I applaud you for that, I wish I could make videos like yours as I also like to visit graveyards as well as their residents. @@SerenitySueGraveyards I find exploring abandoned buildings is somewhat like you exploring these graveyards and cemeteries. While walking around I find myself doing research on the building and it's architecture as well as it's history. I have been in buildings as interesting as an insane asylum all the way down to the mundane and every day of an inhaler factory. I have also encountered individuals who have passed over in more of the high energy places. The most intriguing experience I have had was being in pitch Black tunnels in the basement of an insane asylum when suddenly about two floors above I heard the most blood curdling scream of an elderly woman, after which I asked my friend who is with me if she had heard that as well. She told me that she hadn't after which she quickly stated that she heard footsteps and asked if I had heard them as well to which I replied I had not. As you can imagine after taking a few photographs we quickly left the area and apologized to the spirits who are still presiding there. I have also encountered a quite chilling room before where it was set up like a laboratory for testing experiments on monkeys, however it was a hospital dedicated to special needs children. We later found out that that room had been used to feed children radioactive milk to test the effects it would have on the human body. Without any of their consent or their guardians consent. May I ask a question again?
Here in the United States, the
      larger cemeteries have ground
crews to care for the cemetery grounds, and provide security. The main offices are often located on the cemetery grounds, and at night
many of these cemeteries have night security personnel. The smaller, more secluded rural cemeteries often do not have this.

    • @SerenitySueGraveyards
      @SerenitySueGraveyards  Před 2 lety +1

Some are marble, granite, even slate on the older ones, I'm sure there are other kinds too wish I knew more

Here in the states they used sand stone for many many years. Not the best choice as sand stone deteriorates very quickly. Stones less then 100 years are unreadable.
