- Attached to it is a church still in use and on the East end of the Church are the ruins of the former medieval Church. This part is in fact the original chancel where a great arched window once existed. In the 1600’s with the church now belonging to the Church of Ireland and with a waning of patrons the chancel was deroofed and the window moved to a new gable in the East side of the nave that divided the nave and chancel and created a smaller church. The current single cell church in use was built on the site of the medieval nave in 1775. The tower and chancel are all that remain of the medieval structure which was built in 1400 and was deemed a church of the royal manor of Newcastle. The tower served as a residence for the clergy but was also an important defence along the border of the pale as was its nearby neighbour Newcastle Lyons Castle. The tower now sporting two new wooden doors is still in use by the church. Th chancel ruins have an entrance door below the great arched aperture where the glass had once been positioned.
Within the graveyard which has been in use since medieval times there are a number of ancient grave markers and also a very interesting granite cross. This cross and an adjacent pillar stone are thought to have been erected in early medieval times or even before as they denote the existence of an early Christian monastery. The cross has a weather worn image on it of a cross within a circle

Hey Serenity Sue, that church and cemetery is gorgeous, seems very well maintained. My favorite part was the 1,000 year old stone cross, you do not see those everyday. God Bless You SS 🦆☘ 🇮🇪

There is such a tranquility about that graveyard 😎
It's beautiful, although there were a crowd of lads that were constantly watching me that made it less a beautiful experience
Hi Sue(and GV) This is beautiful. I love your explores❤
Thanks so much Belinda ❤️
Hey Sue. Once again. You outdid yourself. That is a nice church. Don't know when that was built it's a nice church. Love to learn a bit of Irish history. I already know about American history. Just not Irish history. Always on my bucket list to learn
Hi, there's some info under the video in the description box
What a nice graveyard.. church of Ireland always seem to keep there graveyards good. Mad to see those coffins just sitting there. And considering they're lead they are old. Very cool video Sue.

Glad you enjoyed it
A beautiful almost enchanting church. and graveyard. Amazing stones and dedigns😊 I watched a program on the TV last night called The Burden, the wild side of Ireland. Kingdom of Stone. It told of the history going back thousands of years and how the landscape became I think limestone? There were still walls standing, long stone walls but they filmed 1 graveyard...not very big but each grave was the exact same and they had very big tall Celtic crosses...the ones you and GV find 20+ feet tall and each one perfectly standing ....After thousands of years and you could hear the ocean crashing into the rock cliffs. It was WOW. Thanx for a beautiful afternoon walk❤😊❤😊
Ahh yes the wild Atlantic way has to be the most beautiful drive, I have done this a few times, although parts are a little scary because of the heights,it's stunning
Love your enthusiasm and passion.
Thank you so much 💓
There is nothing in the world as green as the grass of Ireland. And you, dear Sue, grow more beautiful every day.❤
Ahh thank you ❤️💕
Hi Sue. Very beautiful graveyard and grounds, and very nice to see there are still new burials being done in such an ancient place. Thank you for letting us ramble around with you.
Many thanks 🥰
Nice one.
Thanks! JOHN ❤️
Beautiful old church and cemetary, all so lovely. Thanx Sue❤😊❤😊
Thank you ❤️
About the 5 coffins in the vault:I think maybe the lids are on the coffins, but with them being very very old and sort of in the open, the lids have sunken in.What a beautiful place and the trees are so large and pretty!Thank you for the tour,I love hearing you speak, part of my family's history comes from Ireland.I hope to visit someday🍀💚🍀
Yes, they maybe have collapsed in, one looked open but that's probably what's happened here
Another lovely place ... tour and tour guide ... thanks Sue
Glad you enjoyed it
So nice to see, that the place is so well taken care of. Beautiful place, I'm sure the people buried there is quite at peace. I love the old Graves, there my favorite.

Beautiful church love the older headstone s take care
Me too
This is beautiful! It amazes me how far back some of these churches and graves go.
Me too, even though I see many, I'm still amazed
Hello Sue. That was a lovely graveyard tour. The church ruins are beautiful within the greenery of the rural countryside. I will be visiting my dear mothers grave today with my family. Also my distant relatives. I'm taking some roses from my garden for my dad to place on my mother's grave. Luckily we have no storms today. Thank you Sue for these amazing tours. Your work is outstanding! Take care and God bless. From Oklahoma U.S.
Ahh how beautiful, Roses for your Mum, thank you ❤️
Well done to the people maintaining this beautiful little church/graveyard..So quaint ❤
I loved it, 😍
Wow! Thank you Sue ❤
Welcome! 🥰
Beautiful cemetery.
Thanks Don
That's such a beautiful graveyard. That little tree lined path is lovely. I like how the new church was built connected to the old church. That 1000-year-old cross is amazing!
Me too, beautiful place
Beautiful green kept graveyard Sue. Very unique tombs and crypts. A quaint little place. I like how the new church is connected to the old church. What a lovely place for burials. Thank you for reading the headstones. Thinking of you Sue. Hope you are doing well. ♥️🙏♥️☘️☘️
Thank you Janet, going through a bit of a wobble at the moment, grief comes and goes but never far away...as you know it's so hard x x
What a beautiful looking Graveyard that is, well kept too. Gotta love that awe-inspiring scenery, I know I do. A big thank you Sue for yet another awesome video
Thanks very much ❤️
Beautiful Church yard and so well looked after. And of course loved the old headstones and the 1000 yr old one ..Really impressed.Thank you for taking us..Love and Light to you both 🥰
Thanks so much
Hello Sue! Thankyou for taking us to look round such a beautifully kept church yard! And those dates! My goodness! The last one in 1734? Very sadly for a 12 yr old boy. All by himself, no mention of parents or other family members with him😥.but his grave marker stone, such perfection in the stone masonry..nearly 300 yrs, and still so clearly legible! Amazing work when you think of and see todays stone work, that seem to be machine cut to no depth at all, and will be worn away in 100 yrs time, if not before which is sad.
But I love seeing the old work, where spelling mistakes had a line through and the right letter carved in next to it, and if names were going to be long, they didn’t do spaces. Make me smile. I wish we knew who these Masters of their craft were! But apart from your Mr Byrne who I’ve heard you mention, when some elaborate carving work has been done, his is the only name I know of, as sensibly he would cut his name into the bottom right corners.
That was a very special find in that mausoleum Sue!! Goodness me! But something always confuses me here, as I thought those were just the lead linings that went inside a wooden casket, the lead sealed once the body was inside. So…no wooden caskets to be seen….not even a piece of wood OR lead lids for the tops ! Am I right Sue in guessing these are the results of grave robbers?
Theo’s wooden caskets wouldn’t have rotted away to such an extent in this time! I mean the other mausoleum you peeked into, showed a wooden casket with a wreath still on top!! How very very sad, to lay your loved ones to rest in the families “safe” mausoleum, only to find, weeks, months later their coffins were opened, desecrated, and your loved one AND their relatives before them…have been snatched and probably sold to anatomical research students! 🙀….I can’t begin to imagine how they felt, but having lost my son more recently I know the shock would’ve made me I’ll, or killed me!. Do you know if much of that kind of thing went on around there from history books? We’re there teaching hospitals that would pay good money for a body? It’s such a scary
Thought, and looking through the bars of that resting space, it was awful seeing just the lead linings for 4/5 caskets /burials.
Well done Sue for phoning the number and ❤Getting us in there, when technically is was closed! 👏. Where there’s a will there’s a way! ( and where there’s a Will, there’s relatives!! Such is life!). You had a beautiful sunny day for it too! I’m sick of all the rain we are having here! You can’t trust the weather forecasts as they never seem to get it right these days, which I don’t understand with all the technology they have to hand. Many thanks again….sending love and light ! And love and hugs to you. Take care! Godbless you!
Love Helen 💐😘👩🦳🫶xxxxx
I hope you're keeping well, it's a beautiful place and happy I was let in. Hope the weather improves over there x x

Hello, all good here, thank you, hope you are too
Hi Sue ,beautifully well kept church and church grounds
You can see the gravestones are in good shape
I could see no vandalism
Thank you for your video Sue 👍
It sure is nice to see
SO TRUE SUE! I want to start following you 2 with a sign: "KEEP OUT OF DEM HOLES" ❤ &🙏@@SerenitySueGraveyards
Gorgeous!❤
Thank you! 😊
It is such a beautiful place
I agree
Thats too bad you couldn't get access into the Church but driving 2 hours to see this graveyard was well worth it.
It was and my heart sank when I seen the pad lock but glad the reverned let me in
Ah Sue you look lovely! Your eyes so pretty. Thank you for the visit to this pretty little graveyard. I always feel home when I watch your videos. xx
Thank you Fran, I've been told I have sad eyes, which they are sometimes always fighting to keep one foot in front of the other. 🥰
GORGEOUS church and a very well cap graveyard. Love it ❤❤
Me too, nice to see so much care given
Beautiful. Grounds are well looked after. Just stunning.
They are! Thank you ❤️
300 year old headstones! Wow! Lovely graveyard.
It's beautiful
Beautiful graveyard and well kept! Thanks Sue!
Glad you enjoyed it Liz x
Beautiful
Thank you
Lovely to see the church is in good nick
Oh, the tree-lined pathway is so lovely. Very serene. Well-trimmed lawn, glorious readable headstones & markers. That ancient cross! 😮
Thank you, Sue. Quite a timely video. 🌷💖🌷💖🌷
Isn't it so beautiful and very well maintained
Always peaceful at cemeteries with the birds chirping. I find ivy so invastive.
I love the look of Ivy but it certainly destroys everything eventually
Such a lovely little place to rest. Some people, when they go to dance in the woods in the 'buff' call it sky clad. I can't help myself but to think of these churches that are missing roofs as 'sky clad'. I prefer that term to 'topless'. ☺ Thank you Sue.
Haha I like that too 😄
Thank you for your posts. You go to the most amazing places. What a beautiful blue sky.
Thanks so much ❤️
Great video sue ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
You always find the most interesting spots in such a beautiful area. Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much!
Hello Sue 💚🕊
Good morning!
Kudos to those making an effort to look after this small graveyard, absolutely a great job,sad about the young lads may they R.I.P Safe travels to you both, god bless catch you next time,👋👋🙏🙏👏👏👍🇦🇺
Thanks Peter ❤️
Beautiful church ruins and graveyard, very well cared for, except for the ivy growing out of those tombs. Those open coffins ⚰️ are supercool! Did I see part of a hand sticking up out of one of those coffins? Great video, thank you very much Sue, and GV. Have a great day 😀
If you did I missed it, that's creepy
@SerenitySueGraveyards I may be mistaken, it could have been a part of the coffin, but it looked to me like a thumb and part of a hand, I thought. Thank you very much for getting back to me Sue, it is very much appreciated. One last question if I may ask? You said that granite does not hold up well as headstones? In your experience, what type of stone does hold up best over a very long period of time, as headstones 🪦 🤔
Wonderful old tombstones too,you certsinly take us to some beautiful places ❤
Glad you like them!
What a Very peaceful place 👍 Have a good one
Thank you! You too!
Thank you for sharing these. We would never get to see this and learn about it without you. US Graveyards are much younger, so to speak, than those in Europe.
Thanks so much 🙏
Hello Sue really enjoyed your video 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thanks Tina ❤️
Hi sue Steve from England Just viewed your video. Sorry a bit late, heavy weekend. Another awesome video sue . Lovely place, both nature and human looking after the place. Intriguing about the Coffins. Thank you Sue.
Thanks Stephen, I hope all is OK
@@SerenitySueGraveyards yes thank you.
06:17 I think that is so beautiful. A perfect cross made out of gaps in the stonework. So simple yet so perfect.
Yes, I didn't notice it straight away, how perfectly beautiful
Beautiful peaceful place sue 🌻
Sure is Tina 🥰
If you search for St Finian’s Dublin you can find pictures of the graves and info on who’s buried in each.
Yes but dint make the mistake I made and go through all the names and find it's the wrong churchyard lol
Thank you Sue for a wonderful tour around the history stone peaceful with beautiful weather. The second crypt we looked at with three of the coffins opened they have been humanly? I liked to what there to this poor family!
Hard to say for sure, vandalism, grave robbers or just tie, possibly time I think, the coffins have sank into themselves
Such a lovely tidy cemetry the entrance is gorgeous
I love the line of trees
❤️💙
Thank you ❤️
Great video Miss Sue 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful place, peaceful and elegant in a way.
It really is!
What a beautiful Church
So nicely kept
Love the video it so nice place
Thank you Kylie ❤️
Great video as always, Sue! So was the church just closed for that day or permanently? So lovely and well kept!
It opens only for mass, they have a lock on the gate with the Reverends phone number, he gave me the numbers to put into lock, how sweet of him
Thank you for the video. Do you think maybe the wood of the coffins warp over time and open? The cremation area is beautiful and a wonderful place to rest. Watching from USA
Yes, lead coffins are always wrapped in wood, I didn't see any wood but that may have been cleared
Weird is interesting and fascinating..... I'm weird....
Me too, who doesn't love weird lol
I’m glad someone let you in. That’s a stunning little graveyard. That mausoleum was quite a find. Is there any reason the coffins were open that you can think of Sue?
It's very strange, they don't really look like they were vandalised yet they are open, maybe age and they collapsed into themselves
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Yeah, I didn’t catch the death dates but they looked very old. I guess they just are rotting away.
Yes, over 100 years old
Brautiful place.
Thanks ❤️
Good morning from Australia 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘 Sue
Hi Kylie
Great Video those coofins dont look like they where broken in to what Ithink if the wood has rotten off and with lead they hasrunken down to the weight of them they would be pried up if they were broken it to them I dont see that their
Yes, that's more than likely the cause, thanks Jamie
Stunning area
It really is!
Beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊
awesome find.
Thanks!
Looked like there was room for at least 4 more coffins😊 Wonder why that 1,000 year old cross was there? Just an amazing place❤
Very strange and some looked open
Just fyi: A crypt is below ground (small space) and a mausoleum is above ground. ❤❤
Yes, I know, it's slightly misleading at times as this one is so different with its bars for gate
Hello Northern Ireland family
Hello from Ireland 🇮🇪
Some nice old stones there. I can hear a Spideóg (Robin) a-pipin' away in the background there - I'm not sure if it is, but I think I'm pretty sure.🐦☘ 🪦
Love the little Robin
Sue, how did you find out that cross is 1000 years old? I’m absolutely captivated by it ❤️
I've seen so many like this on my travels, they are easy to find but this was online stating the age
@@SerenitySueGraveyards These are so fascinating, thanks Sue.
Thank you ❤️
Amazing those ancient graveyards. We don't have them here in the Netherlands.
I feel blessed to be Irish 🥰
@@SerenitySueGraveyards , you should be!
