A visit to the 500 year old Spencer family chapel at the church of St Mary in Great Brington, just outside of Althorp, the final resting place for 17 generations of Spencers. It is an incredible piece of history that is rarely seen, but that is so important to understanding the story of the Spencer family and Althorp.

Much like describing Jimmy Carter as a "peanut farmer" (he had extensive naval and scientific, background including nuclear submarines). At 500 years, the Spencers do not rank as *ancient* nobility. (The earl is my 9th cousin, 2x removed). One of my great grandfathers was created the Earl of Arundel in 1138 - a title now held by the Duke of Norfolk. He is the Earl Marshal of England - being the senior earl in the kingdom. He will preside at the coronation of King Charles.

Very odd for 2 children to both have recessive traits especially if their mother has DNA from Africa on one side of their family. From my understanding, the Earl Spencer was protective of his sister and so hurt by the way she passed, This has to be where she was buried, I always thought how impractical it was to bury or entomb someone on a small island. I hated the idea of putting Diana in such an isolated place, especially since she hated being isolated in life. I would, as a Spencer would love a signed copy of Charle's book. I thought of buying on Amazon, but I am hoping maybe someday he will be near Boston and I can go get one and get it signed. William was just here, but I am recuperating from a second ankle reconstruction. I truly wanted to go to just say, I am so proud to be a Spencer and be a kin to you and your immediate family. According to me ancestry tree and dna, Charles is my 8th cousin, twice removed. His Daughter Kitty and my Daughter Kaili bear a striking resemblance. I could watch clips like this all day. @@mamakat114 It would be great if you could visit Althorp. It is well worth the trip even for those of us with no genealogical connection to the Spencer's. I'm in Massachusetts, too. I am going to go look thru my bookshelves & make sure it is the story of the family that he signed (I have a huge royal family collection going back to my grandparents). I'll be back in touch once I locate it because I am trying to downsize & am engaging in gifting items to people who'll appreciate what I have. Hopefully it will bring me good karma. Meanwhile, I bet if you contacted him & mentioned your family ties, he'd sign something for you.

@@hltvieira6354 I have other royal family connections as well as it sounds like you do. Wouldn't it be cool if we were so close and related. It's strange, my 16th Great Grand Father, Thomas Kitson is obviously my Daughter's 17th GGF. However, on her Father's side, he is her 14th GGF, and also a GGF of her StepMom. Kaili said, "ewe, that's weird, that's probably where my mutant green eyes came from." She doesn't have the "Spencer Blue Eyes" like I and my Son, Anthony, (different Dad) have. Her Father has dark brown eyes. It is all so fascinating. Being out of work from surgeries since April, all I could do for Christmas and what the kids wanted were ancestry dna kits. So I did mine first to be sure it lined up with the tree I worked on for all 3 of us, plus my Stepdaughter, which is how I found out her Mom has the same GGF. It is all so fascinating.

It would be a terrible idea to have actually placed her in a grave subject to the water table on an island; (like trying to bury someone below ground in New Orleans, Louisiana. The grave would not last & if there's flooding, the casket would not remain. Your secret is safe with me( I saw all the security cameras in the Spencer section).😉 r.i.p. Diana🕊Princess Of Wales😇

As a lover of history, the thing I respect the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish for is their extensive written history. The love of their history and their country is most admirable. I hope they never lose it, like we are here in the US.
I can only go back to my great grandparent, on both sides of my family. I wish I could go back further. I wish my ancestral homes were available to me with a knowledge of them, my family and their history.
In the UK, homes, that are hundres of years old and still standing, can be seen in sketches as they were and sometimes still are, in the Domesday Book. Their extensive history of the ownership of properties makes our title companies look like a joke!

I stumbled over your site, and found it a memorable read. I studied British Empire history in graduate school years ago. My mother’s father and ancestors hailed from Somerset in the latter 1800s. Grandfather George came from a farming area and had 12 siblings. They came to the US at the time of the 1890s world depression. The eldest came first, found jobs in industry or in the dairy farms of the Ohio Midwest. Then they sent for siblings, and one by one brought the entire family over from England. My mother’s side came from German nobility and served in the Courts of the Russian tzars, the females served as ladies in waiting to the tzars. I was very obvious by the 1880s that they needed to get out before the world exploded in their faces. They were well off. They sold everything off those final years in Odessa and came to North America. Some of the siblings came to Seattle, Washington. The others traveled on to Winnipeg, Canada, a large farming/ranching region with German speaking Russians that they knew. They were considered to be millionaires judging by the number of buildings on their land and livestock herds. I was fortunate to have a second cousin to my mother write a history of the family and produce enough books that she sold them to all the relatives. Although we sort of held nobility titles in the Russian Court or ancestors would not be ladies in waiting. I found it fascinating to learn that tzars picked their brides from certain German Duchy noble families. Catherine the Great was a German born rindless from one of these Duchies (late 1700s). My Great Grandmother Elizabeth Schmidt married and moved with her husband to the United States and settled in northern Ohio on a dairy farm. Several f her siblings followed suite. Some came farther south from Canada to the Dakota Territories because land was relatively cheaper and occasionally less severe winters. Whether wealthy, landed aristocracy from a noble family as yours, or one of simpler background but with similarities, I found it fascinating to see we all live in a similar microcosm where family, ancestors, and heritage matter, and how we honor them in death.

I recently found out through Ancestry that I’m a third cousin of Earl Spencer from a Spencer-Washington union, which the English Washingtons are also buried at Upper Brington so they were once neighbours to Althorp, which I’ve had the pleasure of seeing before I knew I had roots there. I really appreciate getting to see the Spencer crypt, as that is of course off-limits to visitors. I’m now having a great time getting acquainted with these people from a different perspective that they are now “family”.
