A video series playlist where you go through step by step process of making a batch of mead would go a long way to helping beginners get the hang of it. Starting with properly sanitizing, measuring the honey, water etc, all the way to bottling the batch.
Just bought the 3 pack glass starter kit! When it arrived it was only the single glass starter kit. I reached out to golden hive about the issue and within a day he responded and sent me the proper 3 pack. I was very pleased with how he handled the issue and I can’t wait to start our first few batches
I just received my three jug starter kit. I tried so hard to avoid this rabbit hole, but your videos reeled me in. I’m excited; thank you for simplifying the process.
This kit is so nice! Love what you are doing in showcasing mead like that. I wish there was a product as good as this when I started home brewing mead few years back!
The part that frightens me the most right now with my first try is correct sanitisation. I live in Germany and have recently got a basic starter kit of yours. I saw a bunch of other guides telling me to just steam boil all of the equipment. In the US you use Starsan mostly, as I have come to know from some other sources. Are there other sanitizers that I could use and you would recommend? Would you make a instruction video about how to correctly sanitize all my equipment? Love your channel and ideas. I've been waiting to try this out myself for so long! 😊
I had a kit for making a home brewed beer (in the end it resulted in about 22 litres of beer). Had been looking for making mead for a long time and your videos gave me the final push, to review my current equipment, buy what else I need to buy and start experimenting. So yeah - thanks!
Didn’t suck. I do kinda wish you would have gone into sanitizing the equipment before you start making things for fermentation, and what you would recommend for that process.
StarSan is a food safe, no rinse sanitizer. Spray it on the things and Bob's your uncle.... You can really use anything though, even bleach or isopropyl alcohol over 70%, as long as you make sure to rinse it well enough before using.
From my understanding, it would need to be specially sealed to make sure it *stays* sterile during storage and shipping, so if you don't need it to be absolutely sterile, you might as well just clean it yourself when you get as it won't stay sanitised during storage
Love the video, going to order the kit soon Its a shame that your videos are primarily shorts. I would love to see a step by step guide how to make a basic batch of mead and longer videos in general from you. Hope to see that soon
I was vaguely interested in the idea of mead (I don't drink, but the idea of a very light honey mead was tempting). I watched Tasting History Make Mead twice, and then CZcams recommended your videos. Just placed an order for your Beginner's kit! Truly, the shipping(and probably the customs fee) will be worth it. Because I could not find a kit like that one. The push-activated thing seems like such a great feature! I do not want to spill sweet liquid everywhere. The wide top(plus spout) and the all-inclusive first kit really sold it for me. I also don't want to confuse myself by watching too many creators; I'd instead experiment and learn. Very excited to try making the apple cinnamon mead for the holidays; the French toast one is also on my list. Then maybe a chocolate orange flavor. Once I get to harvest my three varieties of alpine strawberries, I'd also like to make mead out of it. Also, I am also growing the Great White Tomatoes. Which is described to be less acidic and more fruity and mellow. I may also ferment that if the flavor lives up to its reputation. I live in a very hot and sunny apartment where it feels like summer during the winter; it's essentially a greenhouse. Just recently got into growing produce, and Mead seems like a great way to preserve things I can't finish eating. I wish I could've also got the bottling kit, but shipping and customs fees in Canada are a B, but I would love to keep supporting you. I run a press-on-nails business but have stopped promoting it due to social media burnout. And resting doesn't make me feel better so I started planting things. I'm incredibly excited to try making Mead and look forward to seeing more of your content on my feed. Cheers!
Im not currently under circumstances that allow for me to make mead/wine/alcoholic beverages, However this seems so fun. The idea of making drinks for a friend or family members wedding, or watching the flavor evolve and receive the fruitage of your hard work. Overall, the process seems to be relatively easy once it is prepared and put into a jar. I love this channel and hope it continues to flourish due to how unique this channel is. Thank you for creating golden hive, it is so wonderful to watch the creation you make, from soda alcohol to meads filled with berries.
Im very interested and even if I dont win because thats kinda how these things work, Ill probably buy a kit as soon as I have my latest batch of school paid for. Thanks for making it easy to start!
grew up on a farm with many bee hives that produced the best tasting most addictive honey ive ever tried so ive been wanting to use it to make mead for... well over two decades. fine fuck it i finally got one of your starter kits to do just that today
Great video, gives great detail to what is included in the kit. As others mentioned, I'd like to see your sanitation process and what you use for it. A few videos of the full recipe would be good too, i know its included in your guide but it gives good example of how you write the recipes and to whay detail. Having never made mead or anything like it before, I'd want to know my money goihg towards the kit will be well spent.
@@goldenhivemead sorry should have been more specific, yes long term videos is what I meant. You have the short content, which is great but longer content here would be useful. Appreciate your videos (short and long content) and for sharing your experiments.
I wish I could afford your kit because I have never tasted nor made mead before and would just love to try it out. However, as a disabled US Air Force Veteran, I don’t have an income and I can’t work. The VA does give me my healthcare along with Medicaid in Idaho as well as food stamps, and section 8 housing for veterans called HUD VASH. But they only provide me around $320-ish per month, which mostly covers my electric and water bills. So with nothing leftover I just can’t afford anything like the kit. Sounds fun.
Hmm. I didn't get a notification. I'm so excited to get this kit soon. I have some "normal" ideas I want to try, like huckleberry (one of my favorite flavors), and less than standard like Barqs. 😆
Got to say you produce some really interesting and cool content sir.. I tried my hand at making wine years and years ago...your instructions makes me want to try making it again.. Props to your channel
with basic honey mead to have a base line, there are a few questions, 1.- proper fermentetion temperature range, what is too hot, and too cold? i want to prepare a room for this 2.- a timeline from zero to bottling, to have a good idea of how long i shoud wait on fermentation? 3.- the possible "emergency procedure" for when stuff goes wild, if any. likely this only applies to fruit based, but you have done it longer than me. 4.- what are indicators that the brew has failed mid process? when should i abort or salvage? this also applies for the bottling 5.- does impromptu transportation / agitation affect the fermentation? thank you for your time and all that you teach here
3 minute video.... "long form" hehe. Good quick description video for the product. Not sure how they started getting in there, but I've seen a handful of your shorts, kept thinking about looking into your kit, so I ended up watching this. 👍
Awesome video, looking forward to your longer videos. And maybe some history of mead videos. I just started home brewing and can’t wait to get a better kit, I want one of the starter kits you have rather than a moonshine jar lol
Have you thought about selling small kits with just the yeast, acid, etc. It might be a good idea since people will run out, especially people new to the hobby when they make mistakes, since they already know how to access your site and likely own your brewing kit
I am new to watching these types of videos and the truth is that I found them very interesting, fascinating and I am interested in finding out more about this world of wine and alcohol.
I love seeing your videos. Interesting kit. My very first comment on youtube. I would like to see you make candy cane mead or starburst or hazelnut or jolly rancher mead. I dont know if someone mentioned these ingredients but thats what i have in mind
What is the optimal temperature? Also, what is a good sanitizer to use? When I say I'm new. I mean I'm still waiting to buy my first kit on Friday. Just trying to make sure I have a good environment for my first batch. Also, about how long does a batch take to produce?
For this yeast, room temperature is ideal. 68-72 deg F is perfect. I use starsan which is an acid food-grade sanitizer… it’s what almost all homebrewers use. The time it takes to ferment is usually less than a month. After that, each batch varies, and depends on if you want to backsweeten, age, clarify, etc. (usually a batch can be completed start to finish in less than 6 months)
I thought you were incredibly expensive because of postage from the US. But then I discovered your guide in digital form at £21.00 ($26.37)!!! Over twenty quid for a self published digital guide? Absolute madness! So I'll just be picking up tips from your videos (Thanks for those...) but, sadly, I won't be a customer of your shop.
Just ordered this because I figured I'd save more money on booze and I get to satify my booze tooth while learning to wait PATIENTLY to reap the rewards rather than instant gratification
Really want to pick up a kit but I live in the UK so the shipping is £49.00 that's ~70% of the kit itself so I really can't justify it :( Would love if it was on Amazon as it makes it way more accessible to ship as comparable products on the US amazon can ship to the UK for ~£16 shipping which is a lot more reasonable.
Im so damn excited I just got one as a 30th birthday gift My question, and I know its probably been answered somewhere so forgive me; does temperature storage make a vast difference? Save fridge vs counter? Love what you’re doin dude!
I just got the glass kit today and the thermometer looks completely does it have to go on the same...? Also you should do more in depth on setting up and sanitizing properly

What is a good way to describe the alcohol taste? I wanna start but dont wanna waste it if i dont like the taste
Similar to wine. A traditional mead will be most similar to a dry white wine.

I wish I could buy your kit but the postage costs to UK are almost as much as the kit :(
i have heard that this process can also produce methanol which would be not good if you drink it.... du you have something to test if it was produced?
It will be produced, just like it is when you make any alcohol. The thing is, what negates it is.. alcohol. What you are thinking about is distilling, when you take brewed alcohol to make higher ABV. In that process you can risk concentrating the methanol too much in some runs, which is what is dangerous.
