Not enough is ever said about Steve Gaines. He was a huge loss to the music world. An incredible talent who never got the chance to become the monster guitar legend he was meant to be.
I heard somewhere that Ronnie was asked if he thought Steve Gaines would stay with Skynyrd, he was like no way, he's too good, he's gunna go places, not realizing he was as big as he was gunna get
Nothings said, cause he died. He was obviously gonna be there young hotshot guitar player. If history and the Lord woulda had it different
And sometimes, there aint much to say
He is incredibly talented. Best version of the Best Rock and Roll Band... EVER .
He was great. Wonder why he didn’t play that amazing second strat solo in Sweet Home Alabama here.
Hats off to the sound engineer.
I can hear each, individual instrument and Ronnie's voice clearly.
Very Good Job Pointing Out This Fact It's Nice People Notice Perfection!
Especially at Convention Hall, which has terrible acoustics. I grew up in Asbury Park.
L.S. is one of the few groups that actually sound as good and in some cases better live than in a recording studio. I believe it was the energy from the crowd and the steller talent this group had under the leadership of one of the best frontman to ever perform in front of a crowd. RIP FREEBIRDS!
same
A beauty job
Gary Rossington died tonight 05 March 2023 age 71. Thank you Gary for the great music and wonderful memories. My heart feels like it weighs a ton as I watch this . Havin' a drink of Jack in your memory.
Heart felt condolences to your family and to Skynyrd Nation around the world. Another empty saddle as we all head down the road. The Freebird has flown again. Safe trip home Gary !!!💔
His style and super cool stage presence was a HUGE part of this band. That's why Ronnie had the spotlight on him so much
AN and AMEN TO THAT BROTHER!!! WELL SAID from THE HEART & SPIRIT!!!
"If you believe in forever
Then life is just a one-night stand
If there's a rock n' roll heaven
Well you know they've got a hell of a band, band, band"
Skynyrd belongs to the ages
🙏 very well said, Rest in Peace Gary and join the others in keeping Heaven Rockin. You'll never be forgotten. 🎶☮️💫✝️
One of the most well rehearsed bands of all time. Every song sound just like the studio version when they play it live. Very tight band. Van Zant did not accept anything but perfection from his band.
So good
It is why RVZ always performed in bare feet. He wanted to 'feel' the music to be sure it was right!
Wish he wouldn't have insisted on getting aboard that plane.
@@snuffysmiff that was "The Hippie" in them.
For real man! I was typing the same thing. These performances sound like album cuts!
My Brother Frankie told my parents he and his wife were taking me shopping July 1975, they took me to see Skynyrd @ Rickwood Field in Birmingham Alabama. I was 14, huge lineup of bands. Skynyrd took the stage at 9:40 pm. 1.99 ticket price. I was 14 years old. The best concert ever! I'm now 60. Rock on brothers.
My brother's when to that one !! I was too young to go with them!! Sad

I wish you could have been there brother! Where did you live?
Right on! Nice
I know you will always cherish that experience forever 🔥

That concert changed my life!
I had been surrounded by music my whole life. My Mother sang on an early morning Country music show for many years.
I learned how to sing at Baptism services down at our swimming hole at the creek with the Black Churches. WOW!
If you have never experienced that you missed it!
Been playing guitar since then.
@@NativeSon60 that I have not ! Been Around music whole life. I think most have in our great country something that’s part of our society soul along with our freedom of. Choir/ few instruments, love guitar not to great hey after 40 years I can just almost hammer out gimme shelter! Roman Catholic it’s an North east Irish Italian nightmare lol. Not really into it. Although I do love music from anyone anywhere. Very nice experience you have be well my friend. Imma independent Truckin fool hopefully soon I’ll be living around gulf cost area ASAP.
It just don’t get any better. RIP Gary Rossington.
His subtle flair and incredible tone is legendary. Such a great player.
Steve Gaines killed it... He put all the other guitarists on notice... His lead took this band to another level..
I’ll have to say that you know great talent when you see it. 😎🤟
Steve and Ed are two amazing guitarists each brought something out of skynyrd! Sad we lost both amazing players
Thank You. @@KCBeck
And he could sing and write.
Yep
I never get tired of Skynyrd. Even 50 years later. I'm 69 years old. This a great video and the audience was great.
I'm 60 and still love Skynrd. We grew up during the best time of rock n' roll - Skynrd, Foreigner, Foghat, Seger, etc. etc. Music today is just sh*t!
I’m 68 now back in the day I work security at the Colosseum Jacksonville when the riots broke out wish I could’ve seen them live
More to that story maybe I’ll tell it someday her up with this guys on the west side
I'm 68 and I lived
in Jacksonville back then!.
I miss those days
Am 64 still enjoyed. Allen making his guitar cry. Pure talent all of them. Glory era.
That triple-assault-guitar-attack, of Gaines, Rossington, and Collins...is spectacular. What a band they were.
Wysh they had a quad-assault-gytyr-attack wyth Ed Kyng stycking around or returnyng for that epyc Mt Rushmore of Gytyrs.. Wouldnt that RULE? Ed Kyng was no puss-ass Nancy at the axe hymself, ya know? Some of my favoryte iconyc lycks are hys shyt!
I grew up around them so it was all that I knew and that was Skynyrd we use too just go and watch them practice like it was nothing at all,but this was before they really hit the big time and started hitting all their big show’s but the day we heard that their plane went down, that was the true day that the music died.!! Heart broken.!!!!!!!
Nothing like it anymore. People just don’t do it like this anymore. No matter what, this shit is timeless and forever will be 💯‼️❤️
Rip. Rissington 🥲
Not forgetting Ed King - he brought that extra special sound for those first three albums@@terrysweat4187
These days are gone. Nobody makes music like this anymore. Every song they ever sung is incredible, don't have to skip around the album to find something you like.
BlackBerry smoke, Black Crowes, Marcus King, Rival Sons still good music out there
I keep finding great music of the 70s on CZcams... There was only room for so many on a big label, but some amazing bands I never heard. CZcams usually recommends some great stuff.
Tedeschi Trucks band is carrying on the tradition.
That's not true... Check out grizzly mammoth
These days might be gone, however, they will live on as long as we remind the young generation of how to perform and play an instrument. All we can do is show them and hope for the damned 👌 best!
He just stands there and doesn’t have to move around… this band is one of a kind
Yeah, that was refreshing, he didn't jump up and down on stage like a fool, and act out, but just sang, and faded in the background when the his singing was over.
An energetic front man can really add entertainment to a show in the right setting. This isn't the setting.
What I love about them is, they go up there, they concentrate on their music, they do their job with no theatrics.
And Ronnie sings the plain and simple truth , keeping his composure. Amen !!!
There will never be a band like them again 🙂
Dam I miss the 3 Guitar Army... Who does that besides Lynyrd Skynyrd? Wow
Steve,Allen Gary,Ronnie,Bob,Artimus,Ed,Billy,Leon, The Honketts, and the Crew. R.I.P.
No auto tune, no in ear monitors, no tracks, just pure talent.
Amen to that.
GOD damn THRUE!!!
Yes man!
Pure Southern Talent definitely one of the best band's to ever take the stage!! R.I.P Mr.R.V.
!!
Skynard will always be remembered as the greatest southern rock band to ever grace us with their rock and roll. I've been listening to this band since the 70's and still do today!
I used to keep the live CD in my truck from their show at the fox in Atlanta, one more from the road until my CD player went kaput , I'm from the west side suburbs of Atlanta , was a kid the night that went off
Had by that album 4 5 times Was like 10 listening to mickesl j before I heard the live album,t for Texas kicks.pretty awesome they recorded some of the shows
Wow! Alan, Billy,Steve, Gary, Artemus and Ronnie were at they're absolute best. Totally professional and in their prime
In My Heart I Believe The Best Band That Ever Walked This Earth!
An I Believe This To This Day In 7-10-23 .... I'm Talkin The Original Band Before The Dreadful Day The Plane Crashed! That Was The Day The Music Died! As The Story Goes!! They Were All Artist Each One
God Bless Them All!!
don't forget Leon!!
So was Leon!
I love Ed King, but Steve Gaines just might be the best guitarist they ever had. He is fluid, quirky, makes great choices on hitting the perfect note for the solo he is playing and he is clean as can be. Gary is great here too, total pro., but I gotta tip my cap to Gaines.
How dare you forget Thumper!
Watching Steve and Ronnie share the vocal on "you got that right" kinda brings a tear to my eye.....what could have been😥
Yep
Truly. Three months later, gone
Even with Disco and MTV hairdo Rock right around the corner they would have stayed true to their Southern Blues Rock roots. I just couldn't see Ronnie with a afro perm or him allowing it from anyone else in the band.
Ronnie always checked his rhythm by staring at Gary’s guitar… I think he just loved how all his mules played, too!
I agree... Steve Gaines, what a talent....I have a still picture of him playing and in the picture you can't help but notice how long his fingers are,( very long)he reaches all over the fret board with ease.
Man how can anyone dislike this music, no matter how you're raised, what your beliefs are, what nationality you are, or even what you political views are, you can NOT deny that this music is rockin'!
I know at 51....dem guys and some other band keep me young....
@@tomc9790 I'm 66 years old and Skynyrd is one of my top 3 favorite bands. Number 1 in my book. I live near Fresno,Ca and had a chance to go see them when they came here. Don't remember why I didn't go but 3 months later they had their fatal plane crash. I was totally heartbroken. I have hated myself ever since for not having gone. RIP MY FRIENDS.
"Call Me the Breeze" has always been my favorite; damn powerful. Studio version is even tighter 🎸🎷
No orher band before or since have no less the top 2 possibly 3 most recognizable songs the world over...
I wouldndt bet against their songes beimg more u iversally known than anyone else.... Thr brothers, though i love and respect them dont hold a candle to LS acomplishments. What Ronnie, Allen Ed, Steve and till this day still Gary and Artimus, EVEN Ricky medlow... Not forgetting Billy whom is umatched till this day im rock n Roll.. And the hatter. Leon rip....
It is my belief Ronny is without any doubt the greatest american songwriter period.
.Ronnie dad played a song called just another pretty county song David Allen Coe
At his funeral, that was his boy.
Is it just me or is this the best band in history?
Definitely one of the best my friend...
Yes. They were and are the greatest band in history - bar none.
No.
JUST THE BEST BAND IN HISTORY! T😅
A great band yes. No need to ever call one band the best or greatest.
Rest in Peace, Gary Rossington! Great guitarist!
Gary and Allen were one of the best duos ever. Their twin leads were bad ass!
Never saw Skynyrd but I did see the Rossington/Collins band. Those two are definitely awesome.
After watching this multiple times and seeing them 3 times 75/76/77 I am positively sure this was the best band in the history of Rock n Roll!!!!!!!..1 year later..here I am again🎶🎸
You got it brother. I seen them in 76 with Jay Giles and Marshall Tucker in Nashville .They smoked it.!!!!
@@billgibson4134 Right on my brother! I saw them twice in Cincy and once in Dayton..and had tickets for November in Cincy 77..I still have 3 stubs and 2 full tickets sadly
so cool! i was born in the wrong time
Well stated!
No regional bias is influencing my opinion. But at 60 years, and I am a guitarist,48 years on, I saw everyone in those days from Clapton to Frampton many times. I only saw these fellas once. But that's all I took. No point in ramblin, its just that they had mainly superior original tunes with plain spoken everyday lyrics that didnt leave you trying to decide what the singer was talking about. And yes, they were all very fine players. Glad I grew up in such a time.
As an opera and classical music fan, this is so damn good. Not even my type of music but it’s just electric and full of energy
They put down law of the land: 'Saturday
Night special, ain't good for nothin'" '
Everyone likes Skynyrd... even people who don't like rock and fans of all genres still enjoy their music
@@Lowerclergy I like Opera. Impressed with the Beethoven's of Southern rock.
They also have some great earthey blues 😊
After seeing all the CZcams footage of their shows, and attending the July 18, 1977 show in Hyannis, there is absolutely no doubt the band was at their peak here. I'm a big Ed King fan, but have to say Gaines brought this band to an all time high with his phenomenal skill and energy. Such an incredible talent. Anyone who got to see this tour should cherish it with all their heart. There will never be anything like it again.
I've heard it said that Collins and Rossington were really burnt out and that Steve Gaines really re-energized and challenged them to up their playing game .
Skynyrd had no bad guitar players.
Agree,Ed King was awesome but Ronnie got physical with him and he said "bye" and left.RVS was a taskmaster but it paid off.
Just found my LS "Pronounced " album I got in 80 and realized it had never been outta the sleeve or played....one day I'll spin it on the TT.
Peace
The whole band was tight.
You Got That Right
@@feellucky271 Yeah I heard the same thing about Allen and Gary being burned out. Gaines really did rejuvenate the band, no doubt about it. All my Skynyrd stuff is going with me to my grave.
ed had alot to do with the original sound. a west coast yankee but damn good. rip,
Agree 100% man..Cherish summer 77 Anaheim under biggest full moon ever, stones throw from stage turning back to see stands MOVING..Surreal,and forever grateful!!
One thing I admire about Ronnie is that he wasn’t a stage hog who needed the limelight all for himself. He gave each band member their stage time to show their talents.
spot on buddy. when you're a Star, you ain't gotta tell people.
He was a humble and down to earth man. A legend.
I think Ronnie was the bands biggest fan the way he stands to the side and watches them play. Insane amount of talent in this band
They were a true Band. He wasn’t a crooner anyway, lol. He was more like a QB who is more of a game manager, like Stetson Bennett at Georgia, not an anomaly who carries his average team, like a Cam Newton did Auburn. All parts of this band were needed and they were magic.
I saw them open for a one hit wonder band called, The Stories, in early 73’ just before they exploded. They had three world class guitarist, but when Ronnie walked on the stage his presence transcended everything. Even before they made it, he owned the stage and you knew it was his band. “Bring all my mules out here and pick it one time.” His voice defined the genre.
REAL TALENT. Before auto tune. You can't fake this. Lynyrd Skynyrd changed music forever, in a very short time. These were childhood friends that came together by jamming in a Jacksonville, FL garage. Incredible. Legends.
Just watched a Netflix doc on them. The hardships they went through to make it were incredible. This is the only thing they wanted to do, and they NAILED it.
These guys make me proud to be a native Floridian.
See ù in HEAVÈN FREEBIRD J Herring
Amen
you are so right,...in a few years they went from wanting to learn how to play and be a band,...to being a powerhouse, writing songs that will never be outdone,....a monumental achievement !!!
All the mules have been called home… old times they are not forgotten
This footage needs to be remastered for the world to see. This is a legendary footage of the band that deservers to be archived. Somebody needs to to preserve this.
Do u mean like put it into colour and everything?
I agree
That Fuckin Ronnie Man...BEST
@@charleschoffe3846So was Steve Gaines. The truth. RIP.
Abso fuckin lute Lee. Use AI that's now available .
Even with 3 guitarists stealing the show, I've always liked what Billy Powell added to the band.
Absolutely! He brought the honkytonk - w/out Billy it's a whole diff sound.
Spent the night in Billy's house in 2000 in Orange Park, his health wasn't good then so I only said hi really fast but it was truly awesome. I was staying with his step daughter
It's safe to say billy was way more than a keyboard 🎹 player he was a great mystro a southern rock bach can you dig what iam saying just listen next time Skynyrd is on
The perfect keyboard player for a guitar band.
@@rcanoli99 it’s actually classical piano wrapped in chicken fried if there is such a thing.
Ronnie clearly loved Gary, and he obviously appreciated his style of playing more than anyone elses in the band. He always leaned into Gary and put the spotlight on him during the live shows. Great stuff.
After listening to this band for 20 years it’s pretty clear to me that Gary was the architect of the sound.
I feel bad for Allan Collins in this. He’s barely seen in this video.
@@cropcircle22man Allen collins was the sound of Skynyrd and wrote most of the music and song structure
@@kevenrowe2958 If you look at their discography, you'll see that Gary has as many writing credits as Allen does. Ed King did most of the arrangements during the time he was there. Gary was the sound of Skynyrd because of his unique tone and style. He largely held together the song structure on stage. I'd argue that Gary became the 2nd most important member of that band, behind Ronnie. His sound and style couldn't be replaced.
Like Gene said without Allen Collins you'd never have that Skynyrd sound and when Allen passed he took that real Skynyrd sound to the grave with him n Kathy now
In my teens I got to see these guys 3x in 1976 & 1977 tickets were $5.50 still have the stubs
Great memories.
Ronnie didn't need to move around the stage like a lunatic....his voice did the dancin'.....🎤
He has some Jim Dandy in him haha
Skynryd was a band built on guitars. Ronnie couldn`t sing for shit, but he was "the Boss" and he took no shit from ANYONE, and that includes the boys in the band!
@@gib59er56 really? Couldn't sing for shit?
@gib59er56 ur wrong
@@BlazeIsBOSS maybe I am. But that is what I have read. It ain`t important really at this time. They are gone, as well as R&R as we knew it. Now ya got drum machines and computers.
Billy Powells 🎹 is a perfect compliment & makes the overall sound much more dynamic !
Billy Powell Hmmm probably one of the best piano players in rock n roll
When it was just Allen and Gary on guitar Billy really added to the dynamic of the band. He was used alot more. Still one of the best ever.
Indeed. His work with the band is just pure legendary stuff. So underrated.
The thing that always stood out to me with this band is how unbelievably tight and well rehearsed they always were. All of them . The drummer is fantastic and of course any rock band is only as good as their drummer. I've always heard VanZant was a taskmaster and the way they all played together makes me believe it. 3 guitars , piano , rhythm section and vox - a lot of moving parts - always delivered studio perfect every night. I always liked their songs but as a musician myself I kinda became fascinated with the way they could do that without fail. It is not easy . I've played with lots of different bands and some good players and on some nights we couldn't get our shit together to save our lives
They were the hardest working band Honed their sound to perfection in rehearsals at their Hellhouse
they were the AntiZep of their era, i.e., Zep was studio perfect and shite live
Ronnie made the band practice practice practice practice practice practice and practice some more until they became a well oiled machine
What ever could I say that has not been said? Decades have passed and still gives me the chills. Rest in Peace...
I was at a charlie Daniels concert at the keil in St Louis when the plane crash crash happened i remember when charlie came out and told the people what happened wasn't sure what happened but asked everyone to say a prayer bow their head in silence and started the show playing freebird what a beautiful tribute to one of the best bands of all time
Wow what a memory, CDB was one of the best concerts I ever saw and growing up in Houston I saw a LOT of great concerts 😊. FANDANGO and Little Feat opened for them. What a great night. This was in the late 70s when we could smoke in the Colusiam (sp) and smoke we did 😂😂😂
This concert is pivotal for those who are just discovering this band or those of us that already know Lynyrd Skynyrd. I am 57 years old and these three guys are the reason I am the guitar player I am today!! Gary Rossington, Steve Gaines, Allen Collins. I discovered this band in the early 70"s and loved the music instantly! Ruined a lot of LP's, records, trying to figure out the solos from these guys, I eventually got it!! Because of these guys, I progressed to play Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Metallica, and anything I want to learn. This footage deserves to be persevered for all of of us , weather a fan, musician, or the remaining members of the band, they deserve this respect!
Everyone they opened up for they blew out the water! You’re right! So we’ll rehearsed! The shack! Mushroom tea!
Amen
I was a sold out Johnny Winter fan and with my wife I saw LS open for him at the Spectrum in Philadelphia early 77 and I had to admit they tore the place down and after Johnny had started his set people were still screaming for Skynard ! All of the multi guitar bands were great at that time, but by the grace of God we all were treated to the best of them all. Heart breaks for losing them when they were at their peak. Never to be forgotten and always revered for their limitless talent 😊
Steve Gaines was one of the best, most underrated guitarists in all of music, I can't imagine the music he would have created with Ronnie had they lived.
Scot Wells They must have fed off each other. When Steve plays a solo, you can see Ronnie start to get his music making freak on, in his head.
His success was short lived
Your damn right!!!
We all will stand in Steve Gaines Shadow one day- RVZ
Carl Smith i read where RVZ said that.Ronnie was Steves biggest fan and that says alot about Steve Gaines....
They said that Steve Gains was fast becoming the leader of the band. His contributions took them all by surprise. I don’t know what he would have achieved, but no doubt that he was a phenomenal talent, as were all the members!
This band was very tight. All those years of practicing and playing hard in what they called The Shack payed off. It's so sad that most are no longer with us. RIP Ronnie Van Sant, Allen Collins, Billy Powell, Steve And Cassie Gaines among others. I was 18 years old and a senior in Highschool in 1977 and I remember hearing the tragic news over the radio on the night when their plane crashed. That was one of the saddest days in music history.
Hell
House, is what they called it.
Artimus Pyle is the only guy from the 70's lineups that's still alive.
I remember that day too. Could hardly believe it.
The original band members have all passed away there is no almost all of them!

Artemis didn't come along till after Burns left in 1975, 76
Steve Gaines is undoubtedly one of the most underated guitar players of all time, especially with a slide. His intro at 41:00 on T is flawless!
Not so much he was underrated but that he only did one album in one tour and then he died in the crash. His voice adds a lot as well just guitar playing. Would’ve been great to see what he had done in the next couple of albums.
Bro you took the words right out of my mouth. Most underrated guitarist in history
Watch his earlier, original works before he joined LS. Amazing!!!
But the intro at 41.00 is gary
Shame they didn't videotape their live album, "One More For/From The Road"!, such a refined sounding live album, imho!
Ronnie ruled this amazing machine, aka. Skynyrd, with a Iron Fist. He would make this band practice over and over again till it was perfect. But they loved him, and he loved them back. I'm bummed I never got a chance to see them live before the plane crash. I was up in my room and my mother called to me and said come down here, I think one of your bands plane crashed. Omg I was devasted watching the news that night.
But years later I saw them on the reunion tour with of course his brother now singing. It was amazing how well done the whole show was. With Daddy Vanzant introducing the band, and explaining why they decided to go through with the process after the crash. To them finishing the show with Free Bird, and a spot light on the mike stand where Ronnie would normally be for the whole song. With a video playing on the big screen in back of the stage of old concert video. Amazing crazy emotional roller coaster night.
I thank the Lord above that I got to see them in July 1977 in Hyannis,MA. Almost didn't make it to the show but beg/borrowed/stole to make it happen. I thank the stars that I did.
Great song writing but it sounds like he was an asshole to his band mates
Miss these guys. When they were writing and practicing relentlessly up the road on Peters Creek in the old hell house filling these woods with good ole music of the south. Now i am an old man with just memories that didn’t know back then that was the sound of history being made
Monster talent on stage.
Don't get no better.
Best southern rock band of all time!!!! The only band that could pull off 3 guitars and a piano and make it badass!!
Thel best band ever the talent they have was unreal it is asham they did not get to play but it short time I love them the best band ever rip boys you all will always be remember
Watching Steve and Ronnie duet on You Got That Right, which is one of the best rock ‘n’ roll songs ever, it’s very hard to take. They would both be gone within a few months. That damn plane.
Yeah planes piss me off
The pilot dumped all the fuel [no fire] -- landing through pine trees that gave way but hit a brick wall, a large oak. That damn oak.
Hard to believe that in a couple of weeks it'll be 45 years since that plane crash. God, what a great band they were and are.
Ironically, I was driving thru Northern Florida that night on my way to Merritt Island when it was announced on the radio that their plane had crashed------
Yep I'm getting old 64 years old.
watching this and thinking what was coming so sad great band rip
Their catalog is so deep and storied. It’s honestly a shame that their big hits and southern aesthetic end up stopping people from exploring their story and depth.
And to think, that was nine months ago…
Besides "turn it up" the best line Ronnie ever came up with was
"bring all my mules out here." Those of us from the South know exactly what that means!!! The best Southern Rock band ever!!!
This live proformance songs sound just as good as they do on their albums.
I've always loved LS, never saw a full live performance until tonite, I am speechless. Damn. I've never seen 3 lead guitars shred like this with 3 deferring unique tones. What a performance, beautiful piano, kick ass drums, thumping bass. Then Ronnie's stage presence, and his no BS easy voice and story telling. A rock band for all time, I only wish I could have seen them live, I was a kid in 77. Rest in peace, you all are very missed.
@Tonya Harmon I have missed out! I guess I am big metal fan of the 80/90s, those were my days, but I always loved the guitars of LS, the songs, and bad ass Ronnie. I started watching film/stories about the plane crash because I am in commercial aviation and I wanted to know what happened. It spiraled to seeing old shows for hours, interviews, the families and band history, and then the beautiful memorial at the crash site. Thank you for the suggestion, haven't seen that one, I will check it out.
thank bill graham r.i.p. for this video.
You're absolutely right and they play just like they did on the studio albums they were so disciplined I was going on thirteen im 77 the music was a big part of life back then

Just saw the sad news about Gary. Had to come here and watch full concert as tribute. I was in the audience that night NJ as a wild 16 yr old, and sit here as a mellow 62 yr old with tears in my eyes. RIP Gary, you are truly a Free Bird!
He was just an astonishing player. He made that Les Paul sing and his stage presence and super cool style was just perfection.

I'm going to give a shout out to Leon. He's always overlooked but he could work that bass like anything. Amazing concert.
Leon was a real good bass player! The whole band was great here!
Leon was a really good close friend of mine and yes he was one helluva bass player.!! But a damn good friend and I miss him too.!!
And what about those harmonies he pulled off with Ronnie???? A huge part of WHY they were so great! Underrated
@@billgaudio5436 Very true Leon also did sing well!
The bass lines on that smell are epic!
Billy Powell is unbelievable! Listen to his playing on You Got That Right. His timing is superb and the little embelishments fit the songs so well. Just as good as Nicky Hopkins. Dude was a real pro, they all were.
Since I was a teenager, Billy has always been my favorite piano player. Over ALL of them!
Man Steve sure could sing and play that guitar 🎸
@Aisle of View Billy added so much to the music, and just to think he was a roadie to start.
His years and years of classical training sure didn't hurt. Great musician I agree.

Steve Gaines. Such a great talent.
I love all the guitar players of Skynard. Ed. Gary. Allen. Steve. I will not speculate who was better. They were all great. I will say that these old videos make me appreciate the level of musicianship these guys were playing at! Just stellar playing! And inventive playing back then!
Yes sir...
Will never be music like this again. The old folks new how to do it.
Excellent, could of never said it better...... hit the head on the nail for sure...😎
Not to forget Ed King. Skynyrd really knew how to play. So raw, beautiful, powerful and emotional. They had it all. They were the best ever. And always will be.
@@1200JML Also Ricky!
Singers like Bon Scott and Ronnie Van Zandt just seemed like regular dudes that just happened to be able to command a stage and write the best damned lyrics. Both died young, and took that with them. But their musical legacies will never die.
And Bon could play one heck of a bagpipe solo. Check out the live in Oakland video of Freebird about a month before the crash. It will blow you away!
Yeah, just as nice and genuine as there could be-no head trips. Ronnie 3e no just 29yo-Bon Scott was as grounded a man as they come,
Odd you make this comparison in a good way. Skynyrd was one of the first to welcome AC/DC to America. If I remember right Bon and Ronnie developed a bit of friendship.
@@redrock717 I think they recognized each other.
Would have loved to have seen Ronnie bring Bon on stage to play the bagpipes during Freebird. That would have been a classic for all times!
Steve Gaines was a huge talent
Best musician in the band.
I am speechless - this is being added to my favorites. Talk about playing a tight set with basic instruments and no "high tech" nonsense. They sweated out more talent in one song that any of their contemporaries ever could today. This also reminds me of a story and older friend of mine told me. He first saw Skynyrd when they opened for The Who - he said the whole crowd was blown away and even after The Who took the stage - the crowd was still screaming for Skynyrd to come back on stage.
Every song from LS teleports me back to my childhood! A childhood I can’t remember well without the help of music. We were poor and my parents verbally and physically fought like breathing but at least they had good musical taste haha.
Never have three guitarists played tighter.
Not sure about that, you ever watch a band called the Outlaws? I think they played TOGETHER a whole lot better. Their weaving leads in and out of each other is pretty good.
@@awboat yeah.. I know the Outlaws
@@awboat Love the Outlaws. Saw them in their hayday and going to see them next week.
Only support band to get more fans than the main act in Glasgow Apollo then sold out main act till that fateful day
They are all together again now. This music shaped my generation and they will never be forgotten. One of the greatest bands we were so fortunate to grow up with. The end of an error. God Bless them. The music lives on ❤️🎶💫 Thanks for the memories
Steve Gaines kills it here: a triple-threat songwriter, vocalist and guitar virtuoso…
"You Got That Right," son...!
I love Skynyrd! Was lucky enough to get to meet up a few of them. Ronnie and Alan were so nice and down-to-earth. Their concerts could take your breath away I know it did mine. Class of 76
SKYNYRD wrote and sung my life really before I started living it, NEVER FORGET
Same here. Got to see them live once and I was also a bi-centennial graduate. We had the music and the good times for sure!
Great year for music. Terrible year for politics. Thank God for LS🙏✝️
The solo licks by Steve Gaines on That Smell are wonderful. Precise and extraordinarily fierce . What a great player he was.
Best R&R ending is Freebird 1 more from the road. OMG I remember how I used to sneak pot in my 8-track cassette when visiting my grandparents in Fla, so crazy 😂
Dam... That Freebird... The most powerful song ever composed. Come to try to perform after Lynyrd Skynyrd. None band could beat that. Not a change.
My favorite 💜
Billy Powell was a roadie for the band when it was found out that he was a classically trained pianist.
I love how Ronnie says “we’re gonna play something brand new” and then they launch into a future classic like “That Smell” 🎶😀
The thing that really strikes me about this great band is how much fun they appear to be having playing together.
God….they don’t make ‘em like that anymore !….R.I.P to Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Billy, Allen, Leon and Ed….🙏🏻🎶🎸🌸🙏🏻

You know it's on when Ronnie says "Fetch my Okie!" Just incredible. Cheers P[>
Leslie Hawkins is still with us. Rickey Medlocke was a member for awhile in the early days.
And when the last two go on God is going to get one hell of a rock band

That smell was written for Gary ironically.
Who would have thought Ronnie would be gone 3 months after this concert. What a loss, glad we have this to remember these guys.
Watching this concert 46 years and a few days later at 3:14 a.m. CST all I can say is My God these guys were talented, each one bringing something unique and special to the band and giving the world a masterpiece the likes of which will never be seen again.Watching how they were having so much fun and knowing this was the absolute peak of their careers that they had worked so hard to get to,that all the endless hours of rehearsing and playing small gigs had finally paid off makes it even more heartbreaking knowing what unspeakable tragedy was ahead of them just 99 days after this performance that has gone down as one of the greatest in the annals of music history.Rest in Peace to all the guys who are no longer with us,the victims of the plane crash as well as the ones we lost since, with the loss of Gary Rossington on March 5th 2023 there are no founding members still alive, and only Artimus Pyle and Leslie Hawkins remain from this show. They are all performing on that big stage in the sky,and to borrow a quote from Allan Collins daughter from the 2006 Hall of Fame induction ceremony"The Heavens ARE ROCKING TONIGHT"!!!
I love That ROCKING IN HEAVEN TONITE LIKE IT SHOULD BE.Missthe REAL MUSIC & BANDS OF WAY BACK WHEN.I just turned 81 & still Love the GOOD STUFF.
Hartley Peavy gave them all the back line equipment. None of the Johnny Van Sant line up after it came back didn't use the Peavy amps. That's part of the awesome sound.
If you listen closely you can still hear them playing up in heaven. REST IN PEACE 🙏🏼. 😢❤
The worlds most perfect band. Ronnie, Gary, Allen, Steve. Artimus, Leon and Billy.
powerhouse
Let’s not forget the Honkettes. They added to the lyrics big time.
Yeah the Honkettes foXy
So nice to see "You Got That Right" - how much respect did Ronnie have to have for Steve, to let him share his spot light. Love this band. If I had to pick one band to listen to for the rest of my life, it would be pre-crash Skynyrd.
Three big hits from Street Survivors were written by Steve . Steve had his own band and those 3 were part of their set.
Gaines smoked, they were tight af
Kimberly O rightly said Kimberly honey bunny
How could he not Steve was a hidden gem.
THERE is NO Skynyrd after 10-20-77... RIP
listen to them for over 45 years never gets old rock on brothers
Talanted Skynyrd.I was 13 when I first herd em. The awsome sounds of yesterdays rock

Such a great live band, they manage to play loose yet be tight at the same time. The chemistry between them was off the charts..
Well rehearsed ass kicking band! These guys were the real deal.
Cast this one to the big screen and crank up the sound bar 🎵🎶
rick hall the famous muscle shoals producer said skynrd was the most Prepared band he'd ever seen....could play Free Bird the exact same way no matter where or when you saw'em play....
Imax, colorized or not! Chris Young an old Fiddler of Albuquerque NM!
@@jeanvaljeanist Had they lived Steve and Allen would have been in time the greatest pickers in the Southern world, if not already.
3 awesome guitarrists , not overlapping themselves, sharing great tunes together, sharing solo sections each one with his unique style and tone, what a great experience, i cannot think of other band doing the same.
never gets old with this music am 67years old and still listing rock on
This is 1 of the best footage of a concert I've ever seen ! The guitars, piano, & Ronnie Van Zants voice are as good as I've ever heard !
One of the GREATEST live bands EVER!!!
I've just discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd this year. I was two years old in 1977. It's never too late: skynyrd's music is eternal.
Welcome brother. Hang on for the ride of your life!
The Three Guitar Army !! Yes Indeed !! R.I.P Gary Rossington !!
Steve Gaines was such a underrated guitar player that was an understatement.
Someone on here said Ed King was better! Go back and listen to older videos of concerts without Steve. Not taking anything away from Ed King because he was really good too. But I really think I'd choose Steve over Ed on bringing it. I prefer him. I think it was better with Steve. Slightly. They were all good though.
Pay attention kiddies, this is real, real people, real stories, real inspiration, real fookin instruments being played by real people. It’s real lol. No computers were used to produce sounds. Real Music, food for the soul. Miss you Ronnie, Steve,
Amen to that!
For REAL, man!
Gregory Fortenberry Please don’t forget sweet Cassie I’m from Miami OK where Steve and Cassie are also and our families always were close they were wonderful people.
Yes Cassie was and will always be part of skynard sound, them honkettes was smoking
REAL MUSIC and REAL MUSICIANS.
I've seen a lot of great bands, the biggest names, and unheard of, but Skynyrd was THE greatest ever. On a good night, nobody could compare.
This footage is incredible 💙
I’m here to say Artimus Pyle is one of the underrated drummer in rock and roll history. This is some great drumming here folks. .
Ronnie brought Artimus Pyle into the band with confidential instructions to push the guys hard. And boy did he ever!
Yes a great drummer but too bad the band never allowed him to do drum solos.
I agree, Artimus Pyle was a great drummer. I too wish he would have done a drum solo. Nobody can compete with the Professor, that being said Artimus was killer on the drums
You can tell that Ronnie loved his band ,he sometimes looks amazed seeing and hearing the sounds that they choked out of those guitar necks, plain old freaking jamming. Artimas beating the shit out of the drums and Billy putting in all those piano riffs and runs. Wow awesome.
I like it. Funny though, Ed King says he could NOT play original drummers parts. They had to take the original dude with them to Europe. (Source is "If I Leave Here Tomorrow.")
I gather their are a lot of Bob Burns fans out there who say his style was better.
I like them both.
They don't make music like this anymore! Love it! RIP
Oh yeah they do, they're called Blackberry Smoke! Check 'em out.
Pat M not even close!!!!!!
@@patm4236 Not close to Skynyrd.

Even bands like that never seem to be able to compare to Skynyrd, MTB, ABB, Outlaws or Black Oak in their heyday. This is a higher echelon bro.
The late great southern guitar gunslinger - Gary Rossington - RIP FREE BIRD ..... end of a ERA ... check out Gary's firepower on T for Texas.....
Steve and Allen together in the Free Bird solo is music gold!
as a small town drummer - from my view - these guys would spend days and days straight, no breaks, practicing in the wood shed - it was a literal shack. they aimed for perfection , every note had to be in time and perfect on stage and in the studio. i think they found perfection. they partied hard and was known to get in fist fights , they loved what they did and it showed - They are now part of our History , we were lucky to have them the short time we did. bands i have played in all had to learn - Free Bird and Gimme 3 Steps -, if you didn't, you did not get booked for the clubs. Thanks jRamA94 for posting this , Good Real Music !!!!
FREE BIRD. YEAH!!!!!
God damn thrue!!!!!!
